TRINITY SPOTLIGHT

Hello and welcome to this first issue of the Spotlight for the New Year. It seems a bit late now to be saying it - but Happy New Year! Although lots of things have returned to 'semi normal' Covid continues to have a major impact on our lives and what we can and cannot do. One place I can clearly see this effect is on community activities across all age groups. I have one page of community news again this issue whereas in the past I would usually have had three. These type of activities stopped completely in the early days of Covid, though some were able to continue through electronic communication such as Zoom. Face to face get togethers were eventually allowed again only to be further halted as the new variant took its effect. Of course this affects all ages but in particular the elderly. My mum is 89, lives on her own and has now been diagnosed with Alzheimers. I have seen the effect that isolation has had on her and how much more she has thrived when various groups she was involved in have restarted. I have also experienced first hand the difficulty of finding things that might help her brighten up her days and give her some company. It's not until you are unable to do certain things that you realise how important they are to our health and wellbeing. The community pages of the Spotlight are a way of letting residents who receive the publication know about acitvities that are happening - whether it be local or a bit further afield in the city. The pages are free to community groups, charities and not-for-profit organisations. So if you have a group looking for new members, are holding a social activity you want to promote or maybe are running a one off event you want to tell people about please do get it touch. It can be anything - walking, singing, bridge, sports activities, knitting, gardening, beach or park tidying, activities for kids - the list is endless. Please do get in touch and use the Spotlight to let our readers know what is happening around them.

The Benefits of Personal Routines

By Gillian Dalgliesh

As kids, most of us will have grown up with a sense of routine in our lives – getting up at a certain time, breakfast, the timetables at school, homework, mealtimes, bedtimes – it provided structure & discipline in our lives. However outside working hours, many adults don’t have a daily routine – they have things that they do, or would like to do in the week such as exercise, personal growth time or other things, but they don’t make a structured plan to incorporate them into their regular life patterns. As a result, people may not honour their intentions and this can lead to feelings of under-achievement, frustration & anxiety as they fall short of their goals and true potential. The solution lies in thoughtfully creating a regular routine that includes space for all the things you want to do. Personally, I create a timetable – such as I had at school – it shows the hours from the time I get up in the morning until I go to bed. I mark out blocks of time in my days for specific things – meditation, exercise, work, study, house work, friends & family time, food shop & prep, time windows for breakfast, lunch, evening meal, etc. You may think that this sounds a bit predictable, restrictive & boring but I have learned that creating & sticking to a personal daily routine is a path of success, wellbeing, productivity & happiness. It’s a very easy & pleasant way of becoming the best one can be! I keep my timetable where I can see it regularly, it’s an A4 sheet and it’s colour coded for each area – work, exercise, social etc. I look at it regularly throughout the day so my conscious & subconscious mind have the imprint of the logic & flow of each day. I change it from time to time as needed. I also have an appointments diary for the precise details of my days, but the Timetable highlights my routines & habits. It helps with my sense of purpose and I find it very soothing.

Are you struggling to deal with issues in your life? Weight Loss? Anxiety? Stress? Smoking? Phobias? Alcohol? Confidence? If so, then hypnotherapy may be the solution. Find out more about my holistic approach to resolving client’s issues on my website www.gilliandalgliesh.com or call me on 07593 082 349 for a free consultation 16

There are a surprising amount of benefits from having a committed personal routine, they include: The Sense of Purpose that I mentioned, also Self Accountability, Increased Focus, Stress Reduction, Reduced Procrastination; Motivation; Increased Self Confidence, Raises our Mood, Better Sleep, Better Nutrition … and much more. You can find the full article with the details of all the benefits personal routines on my website ww.gilliandalgliesh.com. An Update From Councillor Jim Campbell Thinking about the forthcoming local elections on May 5th, I have been reflecting on what has exercised this Council over the last four plus years. Some of the big decisions were taken, I think, at the start: extending the tram to Newhaven and committing resources to catch up on long overdue school building maintenance work. The latter was a vital correction of previously reckless omissions. It might be a couple of decades before we know the wisdom of the former. We already see the pandemic has significantly changed the movements of people round the city with a hugely detrimental impact on bus & tram passenger revenue. Even if the extension to Newhaven is completed on budget, servicing the debit will place a heavy burden on the City and will likely require Lothian Buses to trim its network. Spaces for People will be remembered: the use of controversial emergency powers to introduce significant changes on our roads, often in the face of strong local opposition. The proposed extensions to residents parking, including Trinity and South Newhaven, might fall into the same category. It would certainly seem that the Council is not supportive of the private car owner. Nor, would it seem inclined to listen to residents who may not agree with the Council's 'know best' pre-determined position. It's sadly reflected in too many Council or Committee meetings where only one narrow doctrinaire position is right, and no dissent from any quarter is worthy even of debate. Net carbon zero by 2030 is bold. But, is it achievable? Or, like the commitment to build 10,000 affordable houses by this year, is it just the “plan” that needs completed? (Only 5,500 or so homes have been built, but a plan has been written for the rest, so job done.) We don't have an implementation plan for net zero, however, despite the pressing deadline. The costs, for example, to convert Edinburgh buildings to net zero is initially estimated at 6 to 10 billion pounds. We have no idea if residents can afford this, or if the necessary skills and technologies will be available to deliver it in just eight years. We do know, however, the target from Council Officers to make Council Housing net zero now stretches out to 2038. All totemic of this Council. The culture of Council and the business cultures of the whole organisation has been a running theme. Councillors have repeatedly expressed disquiet about some elements of Council and Committee organisation; they also received two significant reports from Susanne Tanner QC on perceived weaknesses in the wider culture. This followed the apparent suicide of a Council Officer while under investigation by Police Scotland, and other earlier well publicised cases of wrong doing. It all suggested a problem with proper management oversight and intervention to control risks. Ms Tanner has made 50 recommendations for improvement. Some of these built on Audit Scotland's earlier report: 2020 Best Value Assurance Report: The City of Edinburgh Council. Key is the need to develop good policies & procedures, and consistently following them. Something the Council's long running inability to address problems identified by our auditors illustrates neatly. The new Council will need to follow this up diligently. It won't be easy, nor can it be taken for granted. A focus on getting the basics in order is overdue. I do regret that many current Councillors have announced they will not seek re-election. You only have to read their statements to gain an impression of the shortcomings they feel towards this Council. Or, you can spend a few moments listening to a Council or Committee discussion, all available on the Council website, and judge for yourself how well your local representatives are doing. Please do get in touch on this or any other local matter. Given the limited access to our City Chambers, I'm best contacted on 0131 529 4235, or better still, by email: jim.campbell@edinburgh.gov.uk 24

Podcasting, Storytelling Of The Future By Tracy Griffen If you like a good story, it’s likely you’ll enjoy listening to podcasts. A good podcast will take the listener on a journey - educating, entertaining and enabling a wee bit of escapism of the everyday. You can find podcasts on the internet, either by searching for them, or through a streaming service (i.e. Spotify, Google Podcast, Amazon Music or Apple). They’re shows presented by experts, organisations or individuals who have a message they want to broadcast. The more podcasts I listen to, the more interesting content I realise is out there. If you subscribe to the podcast you’ll be alerted when new episodes are online. Here’s a selection of podcasts I like to listen to, when you find one you ‘like’ you’ll notice other podcasts may be suggested by your streaming service. Just One Thing with Michael Mosley: If time is tight, what’s the one thing that you could be doing to improve your health and wellbeing? Feel Better, Live More with Dr Rangan Chatterjee: “Health has become overcomplicated. I aim to simplify it.” In this podcast we hear stories from health experts and personalities who offer easy health life-hacks, expert advice and debunk common health myths. Headspace: One of the most established meditation podcasts, Headspace also offers an app and two series on Netflix, to teach you the basics of mindfulness. The Organic Gardening Podcast: Inspiration to help you garden the organic way, with advice, tips and interviews from Garden Organic. Gardening with the RHS: Seasonal advice, inspiration and practical solutions to gardening problems. The latest news from the Royal Horticultural Society is currently weekly. Edinburgh International Book Festival: our annual literary celebration has a podcast featuring authors who appear at the festival. Quite an extensive back catalogue of over 50 author interviews and readings. Healthy Living in Leith: my new podcast, part of the Leith Festival network. Each episode is 15 minutes long: 5 minutes of fitness information, a 5 minute mini-workout you can do as you listen, and finally a 5 minute interview with local walk highlighted. Listen in by searching for ‘Leith Festival Podcast Network’ into your internet search engine, or look for us on Spotify, Amazon Music, Google Podcast or on the Podbean website. Follow the podcast to keep up-todate with the all of the latest episodes. Personal Trainer Tracy Griffen runs a fitness studio in Leith, and is the author of two fitness books. Totally new to podcasting, in 2022 she’s been enjoying presenting workouts that you can do as you listen. For more information visit www.griffenfitness.com. 34
