This year is a special anniversary for one of Edinburgh’s landmarks which is right on your doorstep. The Royal Botanic Gardens celebrate their 350th anniversary which is a mammoth achievement. A number of events are planned throughout the year to mark this historic occassion, some at the gardens themselves and others at venues around the city. You will find some details on page 10 and I will feature other events taking place in future issues. They are even planning a big birthday party event at the gardens on the 16th of June so put the date in your diary. If you are a local group or a charity running events during the year please get in touch and let me know what is taking place. The community pages are free to publicise events like these and with the Spotlight being distributed directly to 5500 homes and businesses in and around the area it is a great way to get word of your events out and about. The Botanics Celebrates Its 350th Birthday In 1763, under the leadership of John Hope, with an endowment from the Crown and Royal status, the Garden moved from the Old Town to Leith Walk. It remained there until 1820, when the Garden began the move to its current site in Inverleith. Today, the Botanics is one of the world’s leading botanic gardens. It has many faces: a beautifully landscaped Garden growing rare and exotic species, an internationally renowned scientific Employees at the Botanics celebrate the 350th institution, a popular visitor attraction for The Botanics is celebrating its 350th Edinburgh residents and tourists, and a centre anniversary this year and is marking the for historically important archive materials. occasion by undertaking a year-long The Botanics works in partnership with programme of events and activities to more than 35 countries on research and highlight its historic collections, its national horticulture projects and its scientists and international achievements and the discover and describe an average of one growing need to protect the world’s plants. plant species new to science every week. The story began in 1670 when two intrepid doctors, Andrew Balfour and Robert Sibbald, established a physic garden near the Palace of Holyroodhouse to study and supply plants for medicinal purposes. The Garden prospered and, in 1675, moved to a larger site at Trinity Hospital, where Waverley Station now stands.

What is the Superconscious Mind? There are 3 aspects of our minds: The conscious, subconscious and, less wellknown, the superconscious. Each has its own unique identity in creating the lives we live. Below I will explain a little more about each one. The Conscious Mind – this is the mind of your 5 senses enabling you to consciously experience the physical world. The conscious mind is what we operate with during our daily activities and waking hours. It represents only a small portion of our consciousness and awareness. The Subconscious Mind, lies below the level of conscious awareness. It is located in the lower brain and the spine. It records everything we do: every activity we engage in, our thoughts about those activities, our likes and dislikes about what we encounter each day. Although nothing is forgotten by the subconscious mind, most of the time this part of our consciousness remains hidden from our everyday awareness. However, the subconscious has a tremendous influence on how we think and act when in the conscious state. Hypnosis and relaxation help us to tap into this subconscious part of our mind, to break bad habits, access out-dated or negative beliefs and safely reprogramme them with an up-to-date functionality that is relevant and healthy for our present day needs and requirements. So what is the Superconscious Mind? Quantum physics tells us that nothing in this Universe is solid. If that is the case, then no matter how tiny each & every atom, molecule or particle is, there must be space between everything. And if so, then life is more of an energy flow than a collection of solid things. The superconscious mind encompasses a level of awareness that sees beyond material reality and taps into the energy and consciousness behind that reality. Some refer to this as the “ether” – the essence of the universe - a flow of electromagnetic waves that permeate all matter and space. I refer to it as “the space between our thoughts”. The superconscious is where true creativity is found. Expressions of this kind of creativity are distinctive from those that come from the subconscious. The superconscious is where ideas for truly great works of art, music,

prose, poetry, great scientific discoveries, and deep spiritual experiences are found. Profound healing of ailments can also take place in this state. So how do we access our superconscious? If we have a really good meditation and feel “fully calm”, then we are beginning to experience a level of superconsciousness. As we go deeper in meditation and experience a deepening peace, calmness, divine love, and even bliss, then we are experiencing deeper levels of the superconscious. Einstein described this as the “mystic emotion” – the finest emotion of which we are capable. Myself, I call it joy! If you would like more information on what I have written, please get in touch. Date for your Diary: STEP INTO SPRING! Clear the dark winter energies & shine your light to the future! An Update From Councillor Jim Campbell Last month, the Scottish Government updated the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD). This splits Scotland into around 7,000 data zones (or small areas), and for each area captures data on: income, employment (two most heavily weighted measures); and on education, health, access to services, crime & housing. The SIMD helps direct Government policy and spending towards helping the areas of greatest deprivation.

of pounds and pence. The UK Budget is due on 11 March. The Scottish Government budget should be announced on 6 February, including an innovative three year settlement for Local Government. The Council will set its budget on 20 February, the last practical date to set Council Tax, a statutory requirement. Due to the timings, and a three year settlement, some adjustments to the Council budget may be required as we go.

The 2020 data represents good news for Edinburgh as a whole. Compared with 2016, we have fewer areas that fell within the most deprived 20%, and more areas in the least deprived quintile. In the north of the City, several areas have risen out of the most deprived category, though some remain. The Forth Ward is still, probably, the most diverse in the city, with areas both at the bottom and top of the SIMD. None the less, on this broad range of measures, Edinburgh has achieved better outcomes for her citizens, an while the City has grown strongly.

Broadly speaking, the Council has around £1bn of direct and indirect tax income, and £0.5bn of income from charges. Money is still very tight: we expect to have to make around £10M of savings that were missed this year, and another £25M or so of new savings. The biggest area of spending is on Education, where considerable pressures exist due to an increase in the number of students. Spending on social care is another area under very significant pressure, as we support a growing elderly population. Both areas are, of course, key to our wellbeing.

The SIMD is an amalgamation of lots of different data - the authors caution against direct comparisons. It’s a valiant attempt to look at how well we are doing within Scotland, using broader measures than wealth alone. Scottish Trends has compiled other data in an attempted to answer how we compare with other parts of the UK and Europe in similar “wellbeing” terms. Here, sadly, we have slipped backwards (five places, to match Slovenia), in part due to traditional measures of GDP disappointing, but also some relatively poor outcomes in Education and Health. As a Council, we definitely still have work to do to improve the sense, and measurement, of our total wellbeing. This month, though, thoughts turn very much to the traditional budget challenges 26

Another huge challenge is the growing need to invest in all the infrastructure we rely on, and need, as our City expands. This Capital bill is probably another £1bn. With luck, Council will agree to fund the next wave of new school building, including Trinity Academy. As important to our area, is then need to fund new infrastructure to support the thousands of planned houses around Leith and Granton Waterfront, so existing communities feel some benefit from these developments, not just increased traffic and competition for scarce services. I hope as a City we can join to make the argument for tackling deprivation, promoting growth and rewarding success. Fairly funded Councils are key to achieving these aims. As ever, I can be contacted at the City Chambers on 0131 529 4235, or better still, by email: jim.campbell@edinburgh.gov.uk

A Nice Cuppa You may be sipping on a cup of tea or coffee as you read this. In fact, as I type I’m drinking a nice cup of coffee. We are not alone, as caffeine is the most commonly ingested drug on the planet. Caffeine occurs naturally in some plants, including coffee and cocoa plants, and has a long history of human usage. Caffeine is a mild psychoactive drug that can help reduce drowsiness and fatigue, generally improving motor coordination and reaction time. It is exactly for these side effects that is it so popular. Many athletes find that caffeine improves their sporting performance, and in fact it is one of the only legal performanceenhancing drugs available. There is a reason why Chris Hoy took his own coffee machine to the Beijing Olympics! As a Personal Trainer I know many other fitness professionals who are

connoisseurs of the humble cocoa bean. How much is in my cup? Cup of filter coffee (200ml) 90mg An espresso (60ml) 80mg Standard can of ‘energy drink’ (250ml) 80mg Cup of black tea (220ml) 50mg Standard can of cola 40mg Small bar of plain chocolate (50g) 25mg Caffeine needs to be treated with respect. It has a diuretic effect, so you need to ensure you are well hydrated. There is a reason why Italian cafes serve espresso with a glass of water... Also, too much caffeine may leave you jittery and on edge. Not ideal. Some folk just don’t react well, some love it. It’s hugely individual, so work out what

works best for you. I personally find caffeine drops my blood sugar levels, so I like to have a low GI (slow burning snack, not biscuits!) with or just after a cuppa. Caffeine consumption can push your blood pressure up, and cutting out coffee is one of the easiest ways to reduce BP. If you drink too much, it can lose its effect and indeed make you feel sluggish. Being ‘caffeine naive’ will see the most significant effects. And due to the stimulating effects of coffee, just after enjoying a cuppa is the ideal time to go for a walk / run or do a workout. Harness the power! Personal Trainer Tracy Griffen was a barista, before they had fancy names. She buys coffee beans by the kilo at Real Foods (Edinburgh Tea and Coffee, Honduras blend) and uses a stovetop moka pot to make her ‘rocket fuel’. See adjacent advert
