TRINITY SPOTLIGHT

Hello and welcome to this festive issue of the Spotlight. It’s hard to believe that we are almost at the end of another year. And yet another strange year it has been for us all. At least this year we can catch up with family and friends without restrictions, go for a day or evening out, go to the pantomime again and in many ways live life as we want. But we seem to have a ‘new norm’ that has developed. Working from home is routine for lots of people now and probably will be for a good while to come. We wear face masks in supermarkets, on trains and when we move about bars and restaurants without thinking twice about it. Recently though I discovered we have ‘new rules’ developing. I was at a drinks reception recently with my husband for the launch of Christmas At The Botanics - the lights around this years trail were amazing and the gardens looked stunning all lit up. We arrived wearing face masks, as you do, and after getting rid of our coats we moved into the reception area where we said hi to a few people - some wearing masks, some not. Mmm we think, what’s the position with face masks as everyone is standing rather than sitting at tables. Then we were offered a glass of wine and a mince pie - and all became clear. Once you had a drink or food in your hand the ‘new rule’ was it is okay to take off your face mask. Which of course makes total sense because you can’t eat or drink wearing a mask. Put down your drink to, say, go to the toilet and the mask has to go on again. A bit bizarre in some ways but I am sure there are lots of examples of adapting how things run in the ‘new norm’ as life definitely has to go on - even though not always quite as it was before. As I am writing this - at nearly the end of November - Christmas decorations are already appearing in homes around us. A tad early for me but I think we deserve to enjoy our Christmas celebrations this year and make the most of the festive season. I hope that you have a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year and a great start to 2022.

An Update From Councillor Jim Campbell It has been another challenging year for the city, with the worldwide pandemic continuing to impact on many aspects of all our lives. Thankfully, through a huge joint effort, we are no longer seeing the extraordinary levels of mortality that Coronavirus visited on us as it first swept through our care homes, hospitals and households. But infection rates remain high, and individuals who are not fully vaccinated, are at a significant risk. There is no doubt that UK science has provided a great service to the whole world; Oxford AstraZeneca has protected more folk worldwide than any other vaccination, provided on a non-profit basis or after sharing its Intellectual Property for free. A remarkable example of the public and private sectors working together in Britain. AstraZeneca’s move to a £1Bn Discovery Centre in Cambridge (a facility for 2,200 research scientists) serves as an illustration of what our own BioQuarter at Little France might be. The extreme strain the pandemic has placed on our services remains a huge daily challenge for all those involved. I know finding sufficient staff for the Council’s own Health and Social care functions has been difficult. It remains to be seen how good different Government’s long term workforce planning is; something just as important as any increase in health spending. Or, embarking on a huge centralisation of Social Care about which the Scottish Government is currently consulting. Poor workforce planning is something the Council’s auditors have commented on. Of more concern than an individual audit finding, however, is the ongoing difficulty the Council has had in addressing audit findings within the agreed timescales. Public sector audit standards are, quite rightly, higher than those of the private sector; on the other hand, its hard to believe that failure to achieve agreed audit actions would be tolerated year after year in the private sector. In terms of the Council budget, things have worked out somewhat better than feared a year ago (accepting some residents might not agree, looking at their Council Tax bills or Garden Waste charges). This improvement is due to the Council receiving a larger share than anticipated of the money given to the Scottish Government by the UK Government to compensate Councils for income lost due to the pandemic. It is a short term reprieve. Our auditors point out we can not afford our capital plans without finding significant savings in our day to day spending. One local project that is dependant on resolving this is the rebuild of Trinity Academy. Phase 1, the new sports facility at Bangholm, is due to be finished mid 2022. This will give us a great new facility for learning, teaching and the community. Technical work on the subsequent phases for the rest of the Academy is ongoing. It is likely to be a complicated, lengthy and expensive project - also long overdue and absolutely key for our area. Next year should see the opening of the new Victoria Primary school too, after some pandemic related delay. All local schools have seen significant investment to catch up on overdue building maintenance. Readers might remember the Council had allowed a backlog of some £180M of work to build up over many years of inaction. Of course, this should never have happened – something I’m sure our auditors will keep an eye on. But learning and teaching is not just about having buildings that are fit for purpose. It needs great teachers and support teams. Never has this been more important than now, when we try to keep our schools open despite the pandemic while trying to figure out how to catch up on earlier lost education. Just like our health service, our schools are under unprecedented pressure. They all deserve our respect and support, as we adjust together to a brave new endemic world. My best wishes to all as we move into a New Year. City Chambers access is limited so please contact me on 0131 529 4235, or better still, by email: jim.campbell@edinburgh.gov.uk. 14

ADVENT CALENDAR for December 2021

By Gillian Dalgliesh

“Tis the season to eat, drink & be merry!” Sounds great but often there can be a day of reckoning around 1st January where we wish we hadn’t been quite so over-indulgent! So over the 31 days of December, I’m going to be offering daily Mood Boosters, Plate Power Tips & Booze Busters for happiness, peace & self empowerment.

Here are some tips: MOOD BOOSTER – Think about yourself – come up with 31 positive words to describe yourself (I know this can be hard as we’re generally not conditioned to “blowing our own trumpets”, but do it anyway!) If you like, you can also ask those close to you how they would describe you. For example - caring, loving, genuine, generous, charismatic, daring, clever, intelligent, helpful, strong etc. Once you have 31, write each word separately on a piece of paper, fold it and pop all 31 in a bowl. Each day, from 1st December, choose one of the folded pieces of paper at random and read the word it contains. That is your personal Mantra for that day. Own it! Repeat it often! Celebrate it! P.S. You could actually do this for someone else and make it a pre-Christmas gift.  MOOD BOOSTER - Wind it forward – Before you indulge in that extra mince pie, glass of wine or whatever … remember how rubbish you felt the next day when you did that previously - your feelings of regret, low mood, self-castigation, guilt – it just wasn’t worth it! And it just inclined you to do more self-sabotage. Get your mind wrapped around how good you’ll feel by resisting the temptation! PLATE POWER – Eat more slowly by using the opposite hand to the one you’d normally use. This will slow down your eating and give you the awareness when your brain & your belly simultaneously send you a signal to let you know when you are comfortably full, replete, satisfied and you can then just stop eating, even if you haven’t cleared your plate. BOOZE BUSTER – PLAN!!!!!!!! This is essential. Make an advance plan of how much you intend to drink. Set a limit on how you’re going to drink – perhaps you could intersperse alcohol with an alcohol free drink or water. Consider low alcohol options. Set a budget of how much you’re going to spend on alcohol and take cash. Be selective about what events you want to attend. Set a going home time. More information on my website, FaceBook page or subscribe to my YouTube channel Gillian Dalgliesh Therapies for Daily Videos. Feeling challenged or overwhelmed? I offer a free confidential Discovery Call – I can hear more about your concerns, give you information about how I work and answer any questions you may have about hypnotherapy can help you. Anxiety & Weight Management are particular areas I can help with. Make 2022 your Year of Self Empowerment!!!! 20

Relaxing Reading Recommendations

By Tracy Griffen

Long dark evenings are an excellent time to indulge in some relaxed reading. Over the last two years I’ve enjoyed learning more about how slowing down can improve both physical and mental health. Here are my favourite picks: A Monk’s Guide to Happiness - Gelong Thubten This is a wonderful book that I keep beside the bed. I’m currently reading a chapter a day for the fourth time. It’s humorous, full of straightforward mindfulness exercises and is an excellent introduction to meditation. The Places That Scare You - Pema Chodrin Pema, an American Buddhist nun, dives deeper into how you can use meditation to help heal trauma and address emotional issues in your life. Ten To Zen: Ten Minutes a Day to a Calmer, Happier You - Owen O’Kane Owen O’Kane has dual medical and psychotherapy training and is a former clinical lead for an NHS mental health service. This book is divided into ten sections, and does what it says on the cover. He’s also the author of the enlightening Ten to Happiness, with ten easy-toimplement ideas of how you can be happier. Think Like a Monk - Jay Shetty Self-proclaimed social media superstar distils the timeless wisdom he learned as a monk into an easy-to-digest introduction to what mindfulness and meditation is all about. A good read for a younger audience. The Wim Hof Method: Activate Your Full Human Potential – Wim Hof Mr Hof is also known as ‘the Iceman’ for his feats of cold exposure (he’s often photographed sitting in the snow wearing only shorts!), and his eccentric method involves harnessing your breathing, cold showers and training your brain. If you’ve ever wondered what the attraction of cold water swimming is, you’ll find it explained in this book. Fascinating and slightly kooky, Wim Hof’s methods are being increasingly backed up by science. Positively Primal: Finding Health and Happiness in a Hectic World - Emma Woolf Many people have found comfort in nature over the last two years. This book helps you live more naturally and embrace your wild side. Of course, I need to mention my own book, published during lockdown last year, ‘Get Fit and Enjoy It: Learn Effective Exercise without a Gym’ by Tracy Griffen teaches you how to get fit and home, with minimal equipment. Perfect for kickstarting new year resolutions! Enjoy. 34

Community Spotlight FRIENDS OF STARBANK PARK 2022 CALENDAR AND CARDS Due to the pandemic and in order to raise funds calendars and cards were initiated last year very successfully - more than 500 calendars and countless cards flew off the table. We are offering both again this year. Included in this year’s calendar is the Royal Visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on May 27 this year. This photograph, courtesy of Fields in Trust, shows the very informal nature of this historic occasion. Calendars and cards will be available at Starbank Park every Wednesday and Saturday between 10.00 - 12.00 p.m. They are also available at Elliott Clark Flowers in Montagu Terrace and Newhaven Connections Cafe in Craighall Road. They calendars cost £6 each. Luxury Wreath-Making Kits will also be continued again this year. These Kits will be distributed in early December, however please make sure you pre-order. Please do pop along to Starbank Park and grab a calendar or cards before they all disappear - and remember you can also send the calendar to friends and/or relatives.
