Hello And Welcome To The August/September Issue Of The Trinity Spotlight Back again after the summer break - and what a summer it was. I can’t remember the last time we had so much sun and hot weather. Having a garden that the sun moves around in during the day, my best buy was a small bistro table and two chairs. So easy to pick up and move as the sun moved!! And brilliant for breakfast in the garden.

But the schools are back, the holiday period is over and its back to the work routines again. I did have a very extended break from the office over the summer, firstly with my own holidays and then when family visited from abroad - batteries are well recharged! Hopefully though I have managed to catch up with everyone who called and emailed me during this period. Apologies if I have missed anyone but do get in touch again now that I am back in full swing.

Loads going on in this issue as always so have a flick through the pages and see what catches your attention. For many it will seem way too early to mention the ‘C’ word but if you have a business you will probably be starting to think and plan for christmas already. The History of Suffrage

This year marks the centenary of the first Representation of the People Act. We all know something about Emmeline Pankhurst and her suffragettes but how did a movement that changed the course of history begin?

A breakaway group from the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies, originally founded by Milicent Fawcett to encourage peaceful protest, the WSPU’s motto was ‘Deeds not Words’, which reflected their decision to turn to direct physical confrontation, even if that broke the law, to get their message across. Emmeline encouraged suffragettes to learn jiu jitsu to defend themselves in the inevitable skirmishes that occurred with the police and public.

Local A’cappella Chorus Wow Harrogate

Following their highly successful Fringe 2018 show “From Monks to Boy Bands” the Rolling Hills Chorus are thrilled to have improved on their 2016 success at the British Association of Barbershop Singers Convention at Harrogate. They wowed the audience with their romantic interpretation of the 50’s ballad “London By Night”and the energetic swing tune “Just In Time” The a’cappella group, based in Clermiston, came 14th against fierce competition from 35 of the best barbershopgroups from all over the UK. Musical Director Rosalind Johnson said “I am absolutely thrilled with our success at the convention and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for the chorus. The guys work so hard and have so much fun in the process that our improvement is real vindication for the work we have put in to become the best singers we can be over the past 18 months, and this result is a great indicator of that.”

The chorus has various engagements closer to home over the next few months including their annual “Learn to Sing” course for budding harmony singers in January 2019. They will also be polishing up their popular Christmas repertoire for this year’s carol concerts in December as well as preparing for their 2019 Fringe production...Watch this space!

University Support Backs Locals’ Vision For A Better Edinburgh Communities across the Edinburgh region are to benefit from a £70,000 project to support groups tackling vital social issues. The University of Edinburgh’s Community Grants Scheme will help to provide support for children with disabilities, tackle the causes of poverty and aid vulnerable women.

Among the first 16 projects to be awarded funding of up to £5000 is a programme of workshops to help reduce youth offending and anti-social behaviour in Mayfield, one of Scotland’s most deprived communities.

Comas, a charity that supports marginalised and vulnerable people in communities, will support women suffering from domestic abuse, poverty and poor mental health by offering them a programme of outdoor activities to improve their wellbeing.

The Community Grants Scheme is part of Edinburgh Local, the University’s strategy for continuing to make a positive contribution to the city. The Scheme, funded by the University’s Corporate Services Group, will support further collaborations and partnerships. A broad area across the Edinburgh region is benefiting from the grants, including Midlothian’s Mayfield and Easthouses district and the Northfield and Willowbrae area of the city.

Fiona Morrison, chief executive officer of Comas, said: “We’re delighted that The University of Edinburgh has awarded us a grant which will help our organisation deliver even more important programmes for local people.”

Hugh Edmiston, Director of Corporate Services Group at the University of Edinburgh said: “We hope we can contribute to communities and support some of the fantastic local organisations who are doing great work in the Edinburgh region.”

SIMPLE MINDFUL STRATEGIES

Follow these easy guidelines to help increase your sense of awareness in the everyday

Meditate – even if it’s just for a few

minutes. It can be as simple as just focusing your attention on the breath and on how the body moves with each inhalation and exhalation. Notice the movement of your body as you breathe.

Observe your chest, shoulders, rib cage and belly. Simply focus your attention on your breath without controlling its pace or intensity. If your mind wanders, return your focus back to your breath.

The ultimate benefit of meditation is liberation of the mind from attachment to things it cannot control, such as external circumstances or strong internal emotions.

Contemporary studies show that consistent meditation practice yields long term benefits on the brain and on the immune system.

Slow down and take 10 seconds to tune

into each of your body senses: Hearing – what can you hear in the far distance, middle distance and your immediate surroundings?

Smell – what aromas, scents and smells can you become aware of?

Taste – what tastes can you become aware of in your mouth?

Touch - become aware of the sensations of your clothes on your skin, the soles of your feet in your shoes, if you are seated then become aware of the support and comfort of your chair.

Pay attention to people, especially your loved ones Start learning how to tune into your

intuition and body talk:

First of all, in a relaxed state, scan your body.

In this way you can start to become familiar with your ‘neutral’ state. Practise this.

When positive things occur in your life, pause … and notice how it feels. When you think of the good thing that has happened, where do you feel it in your body? You will feel different to your neutral state.

When negative things occur in your life,

pause … and notice how it feels. When you think of the unpleasant thing that has happened, where do you feel it in your body?

You will feel different to your neutral state.

With practise, you will find that your body can act as your own “barometer”. When you have decisions to make and a choice of possible solutions or actions to take, you can tune in to your body and get a feel for which one would be best.

In times of stress, breathe in through your nose to the count of 2, pause, breathe out through your mouth to the count of 5, pause, repeat. You will feel instantly less stressed. Continue till you feel more in control and ease.

An Update From Local Councillor Jim Campbell We have been enjoying the most fantastic climate in Edinburgh for a number of years.

Not only has the sun been shinning, but our City has experienced a rate of growth not seen outside London and the South East of England. Looking south from Trinity, cranes fill the skyline, representing very significant levels of investments in our Capital.

Growth is not without challenge. Most challenges should, however, be easier to manage when the economy is creating wealth, jobs and tax receipts. That’s not to say that new wealth is perfectly spread, or that all those seeking employment have the skills and opportunity to find work, or that the increased taxes benefit the Council. In the last case, due to the vagaries of Local Government finance in Scotland, they certainly do not. But most of us, I am sure, would rather live in a successful City than in one that was contracting.

All this places quite a strain on our infrastructure and creates a pressing need to build more homes. Unlike the rest of Scotland, the population of Edinburgh and surrounds is growing rapidly. Audit Scotland have forecast the City of Edinburgh’s population will grow by more than 20% between 2014 and 2039. This implies we will need something like 60,000 more homes over the next 20 years - a rate of building we are not accustomed to.

New districts are being proposed near the airport. We have seen an increase in density across the City. Closer to home, developments have picked up in the Western Harbour and the marina scheme at Granton Harbour seems to be gathering momentum again.

One of the mysteries I faced after my election last May, was the cause of stalled development in the “Waterfront” area to the west of Granton. An ex-industrial quarter overlooking the Forth, including historic 24

gems like the Granton Castle walled garden and Madelvic House. The walled garden dates from the 17th century, and until quite recently operated as a market garden, supplying cut flowers to local florists. It is now looked after by a community friends group, and hosts regular open days. Madelvic House is the first known production site for electric vehicles in the world. An impressive accolade, as once again the whirl of electric cars can (just about) be heard in the streets of Trinity.

But here too there has been some progress.

The Council recently bought the old British Gas site, giving it a majority ownership of the area, and a belief it can now unlock the full potential of our Waterfront, just a few miles for the City Centre. It may take many years. Consultation with local communities is starting, through the cross party Waterfront Working Group, including all the neighbouring Community Councils, including Trinity.

There will be challenges ahead. It remains to be seen if the Council will be able to negotiate the capital investments require to support the demand for new infrastructure.

It’s not unknown for regulation and red tape to be a bigger break on development that lack of money. Here too the Council will have to work hard to attract and keep investment flowing in. And then there is the shear scale of development that our Planners and other Officers will need to gear up for. A huge challenge indeed!

I am told the outlook for October is good.

Forecasts can be wrong, but who wouldn’t rather prepare for sun than rain?

Edinburgh Voluntary Organisations’ Council Launch Memory Box In Community Museum Edinburgh Voluntary Organisations’ Council (EVOC) has launched its ‘Memory Box’ project at the Living Memory Association as part of celebrations to mark 150 years of civic action in Edinburgh. People will be able to write down and submit their memories of campaigning, volunteering and protesting and post them into a physical box. The Memory Box and collaboration with the Living Memory Association is part the EVOC 150 programme, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Lucy Ridley, Programme Manager for EVOC 150 siad “The EVOC 150 project is a celebration of civic action in Edinburgh through the delivery of all sorts of different interactive activities. As part of this, we are working in partnership with the Living Memory Association and they have already begun looking at archive material from our heritage and making these accessible. The next phase of their work is to investigate who the people in the photos are and what the story is. From there, they will help us create a rich oral history of EVOC for future generations. We would welcome people to submit a memory, a short story or poem about their memories of voluntary and civic action in Edinburgh. Our job will then be to interpret them and communicate them with the wider community.”

The Living Memory Association, located at Ocean Terminal, provides a range of services aimed at giving people the opportunity to reflect and reminisce on the past.

Miles Tubb, Project Worker at the Living Memory Association, said: “We are a reminiscence oral history project, we’ve been going for 32 years and we work largely with older people using reminiscence to get people more socially active. I think the EVOC 150 Memory Box is a great idea because people in here like to share memories. They are not just picking things up but they are also giving information.

The fact that we can put a box out there specifically about protest and campaigning is great, people like to contribute and that’s what we are about. I think to reminisce is a basic human instinct and it’s nothing to do with age, young children reminisce and it’s surprising how it brings people together.”

Cork walls are warm and soft to the touch, eco-friendly, insulating and soundproofing, and come in a range of colours, patterns and textures. You could even consider polished plaster, which has a beautiful depth of colour, or sheet metal for an unusual, industrial look.

IDEAS FOR FEATURE WALLS • Transform your wall with peel-off stickers.

They come in all sorts of divine designs from simple shapes to complex illustrations.

• Wallpaper with an oversized pattern and vivid colours may well be too much for a whole room, but makes a great focal point on just one wall.

• Think paint effects are passé? Not when you try modern, graphic ideas such as bold horizontal stripes or an ombré/dip dye look.

• Large maps (old or new) are attractive and educational. Simply paste straight on to the wall. Try sheet music and wrapping paper, too.

• Take any digital image and have it enlarged to cover an entire wall. Eye-poppingly gorgeous.

• Use a variety of vintage wallpaper samples as a colourful collage. Combine with paint, too, if you wish.

Try Urban Rush

By Tracy Griffin Running events have become hugely popular in Edinburgh, suitable for a variety of fitness levels - and a great way to raise money for charity whilst getting fit. For instance, the Race for Life is an ‘entry level’ event at 5km and raises money for Cancer Research UK. Once you’ve got a 5km race under your belt, often runners aim for the next distance, 10km, then perhaps even a half marathon, even a marathon.

Most charity events tend to be a standard distance. So when I first noticed the odd distance of the Urban Rush event, 15 miles (24km), just over a half marathon, it piqued my interest.

Not only is it a unique distance, but it’s also a unique route. Urban Rush will be held on Sunday 2 September and is a very

picturesque event. Starting at South Queensferry, running along the coast through Cramond and then along the bike paths into town. Traversing the New Town to the Old Town and down Cannongate is a highlight, finishing in Holyrood Park. I personally entered the event as it looks like such a fab route, but upon communication with the organisers found myself promoted to role of official ‘Frontrunner’ helping to motivate runners as they go along. I’ll probably run near the back of the pack, to encourage less experienced runners on their way. I’ll also be leading the aerobic warm-up on the day, what fun!

Urban Rush raises money for Shelter

Scotland, a (sadly) necessary charity who help tackle homelessness. The mission statement for Shelter is to “strive every day to give people the help they need, and campaign relentlessly to achieve our vision of a safe, secure, affordable home for everyone.”

Shelter is needed now more than ever, so what a great excuse to get out for a run.

Dolphin Watching
