Welcome To The August/September Trinity Spotlight Life as we know it is still not back to what is used to be but we are, mostly, heading in the right direction. There are still quite a few businesses out there though that fall into Phase 4 of lockdown reversal and who are facing uncertainty about when/how they can reopen. I hope that if you fall into this category that things get sorted out for you very soon.

Still no community pages again this issue and it looks like it might be some time before community groups get back to where they were before. As I mentioned previously, if you are a community group, a charity or a not for profit organisation, for adults or children, and you are planning things for the forthcomng weeks or months please get in touch with your information. The community pages are free for these groups and are a great way of letting our readers know what is going on that they might be interested in.

I know nobody really wants to talk about the ‘C’ word yet but if you are a business that wants to advertise for Christmas please get in touch and book space while it is still available. The October issue goes through doors on the 1st/2nd/5th of October, the November issue going on the 4th/5th/6th November and the December issue on the 4th/7th/8th December. Maybe by the time I am putting the next issue together a few more of our advertisers will be able to feature on the Spotlight pages again. .

What is a Habit?

A habit is a routine behaviour that is repeated regularly and tends to occur subconsciously. Habits are reflexes – positive or negative – that create the parameters for us to live our lives comfortably or uncomfortably.

Many people have habits that they would rather not have, however sadly, most people never truly break their habits. Year after year, they slip into the same patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Sometimes, it is just one pattern that is behind what they see as several unrelated incidents, and they never realise that they have been repeating the same script since childhood.

We all have habitual patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving that we have been practising for a long time and they have become so integrated into our lives that we are no longer conscious of them. Actually, much of our life is lived unconsciously through a patterned set of habits – some dating from before we were even able to speak – in times of stress, adults will often make sucking motions/noises with their mouths, as they likely would have made as suckling babies seeking comfort from their mothers.

Modern times have become so complex and are lived at such a fast pace that we give up massive chunks of our waking life to our unconscious – from wakening up, heading to our workspace, eating, even how we relate to others.

Habits allow us to function on automatic pilot, saving us from mindfully having to think about how we are actually responding to life so that we can move through our life attending to what we perceive to be ‘more important matters’.

For sure, some of our habits serve us well.

Others, however, serve only to reinforce the difficult patterns in our lives.

An Update From Councillor Jim Campbell Re-opening Council buildings following the Coronavirus Pandemic is turning out to be a slow process. By the time you read this, our young people should have successfully returned to full time education. A lot of hard work has gone in to minimise any risks associated with reopening schools. I think it is right to give this such a high priority, not least having heard how inconsistent the experience of lock-down learning was (and, for some older students, how difficult the SQA results have been) Many other public buildings such as Libraries, Community Centres, some public toilets and swimming pools remain closed without a clear opening date. This is being justified in terms of the severe financial pressure facing the Council (reopenings carry additional costs), and that our Facilities Management team are fully committed re-opening schools. In some case we have had to bring in agency staff to support openings, as Council staff have been unable to return to work just yet.

Interestingly, at the onset of the pandemic, it was our Public Private Partnership schools that were able to respond most speedily to the changing hygiene demands and provide hub learning environments for the children of key workers and their teachers.

Unlike our Parliamentarians, Councillors have still to return to meeting in the City Chambers, or the resumption of long standing Committee structures where we are jointly responsible to the citizens of Edinburgh for decision making, question and hold services to account for performance. Tellingly, only a minority of opposition Councillors think this is important.

It is with some relief then, I can report that the Planning Committee is meeting to consider the next stage of City Plan 2030. Although I am not member of this committee, I would far rather such an important discussion took place in this Committee, with advantage of the experience of its members.

Planning is essentially a rules based system. When Councillors determine planning applications they act more like a court of law (they are, in the jargon, quasijudicial) though still often contentious. I receive a lot of communication from Trinity residents concerned about developments, supporting green spaces, or asking that obstructing trees be cut back. In fact, most planning applications in Trinity are locals seeking to improve their own residence.

Provided their application is within the planning rules and guidelines, they should get permission. Looking at the area over my lifetime, I would say the built environment is more interesting and in better condition than ever but with a greater density of development and an increase in the number of people that can call Trinity home.

City Plan 2030 is important, because it is a key moment to set planning rules for the next 10 years. There have been around 1,800 responses to the ‘Choices’ we face – which is a good response for a Council consultation. There is widespread agreement that houses must have a lower carbon footprint, that we should encourage active travel (walking & cycling) and protect green spaces – though, of course, the devil is in the detail.

The two big questions need answered.

Can Edinburgh’s housing needs to 2030 be supported using only brownfield sites?

How many new developments need to be built, so that people can find homes they want and can afford? And that is the tension the City faces. A blended option with brownfield and limited greenfield land releases would seem a pragmatic option.

Its a real dilemma! One made all the more difficult due to the uncertainty the pandemic brings to foreseeing the future of Edinburgh, and the delayed arrival of the City Transport Appraisal.

The Power of Napping Smart people nap. Super-fit athletes nap.

Old people nap, and young children nap too. Some of us nap, and some of us don’t. As a Personal Trainer, my afternoon nap is non-negotiable. It’s how I can do early morning fitness, and also evening fitness with energy. Napping is a chance to recharge the batteries during the day.

For me, lying down is also a blessed relief upon varicose veins.

According to the Sleep Foundation (https://www.sleepfoundation.org/articles/ napping), there are three types of napping; planned, habitual and emergency. The main difference is whether it is your body entering shutdown mode (emergency) or whether it’s scheduled (planned). Habitual napping can also be planned, in that when

someone naps at the same time everyday (children do this), they may work it into their daily routine. Naps should be short, around 20 – 30 minutes, and fully clothed.

It’s up to you whether you lie down in bed, or power nap seated on the sofa. You should wake up energised, not groggy.

If you are groggy after a nap, perhaps you’re over-tired in general.

Benefits of napping include better cognitive function, improved mood and energy levels. It’s an oasis of calm in a busy day. Nowadays many people meditate, and it can be argued that meditation has a similar effect. It’s up to you to work out what works best for you.

I personally nap around 3pm, when I’ve done most of my exercise and activity for

the day and I need a final boost. Too early in the day and you might not be sleepy, too late and it might interfere with evening sleep patterns. I always set an alarm, in fact have a bedside clock with a ‘snooze’ function. Setting an alarm means you can really switch off and relax for half an hour.

Switch off your mobile phone too.

Many high tech offices are now realising the power of napping, and Google even has ‘nap pods’ for their employees. If it’s good enough for Google, it’s good enough for me.
