Welcome To The October Stockbridge Spotlight The leaves are starting to turn brown, the evenings are drawing in and it feels like Autumn is almost here. Its sad to see the summer months go but I look forward to cosy nights in with the curtains closed, a cosy blanket over my knees and my candles burning.

International Stockbridge By Deidre Brock MP International energy companies using cutting-edge technology to help change the world for the better – where do you think you would find them headquartered?

Stockbridge.

Offices in Rennes and in Dijon and in Bristol but headquarters in Silvermills, Locogen is only a decade old but it is going from strength to strength. It works in Fife but also in west Africa and it has won a string of awards for its efforts.

What does it do? Sorcery – it magics electricity from the wind and the sun and the scraps off your plate. They like to call it renewable energy – windmills and solar photovoltaics and anaerobic digestion.

They also do hydro power and a couple of other things to help make that electricity go a little further.

It’s clear why increased emphasis on renewables is important – those arguments have been aired aplenty – but what’s not noted often enough is that Scotland is a world leader in developing and implementing the technologies that we’ll need. I can even point to another internationally-recognised company that has its headquarters just a few hundred yards from my office (Nova Innovation – worth looking up if you’re interested in renewables).

Locogen, though, has another couple of bonus points to talk about. It invests in its staff – a quarter of its workforce to date has come directly from education and trained on the job. It also helps communities to develop and run their own projects like the Dundonald Community Wind Turbine whose profits get split between the Ore Valley Housing Association and the local community.

It has also saved community projects like the Ben Mor hydro project; originally owned by the Coigach Community Group and Scottish Wildlife Trust, Locogen bought it over when the risks became too great but 14

the original owners still benefit from a retained interest.

So why am I wittering on about this company? Well, I’m a fan of renewable energy and always have been – it seems more than sensible to me. I’m a fan of clean industry and I’m a fan of industry investing back into the communities it serves.

More than that, though, I think that we spend far too much time praising the actions and the achievements of people, companies and industries based elsewhere and not enough time praising oor ain folk. We’ll quite happily point to people anywhere else in the world doing wonderful things and only point to our own after they’re dead or gone to work elsewhere or suchlike.

In the vein of John Logie Baird, Alexander Graham Bell or James Chalmers, Scots innovators are still making the waves. We should make sure we take a bit of time to acknowledge that there are still Scots crafting the future and they’re working here – they walk among us!

In the future when you flick a switch it may be that the power that lights your bulb, heats your toaster (invented, of course, by Alan MacMasters as a by-product of his work on the lighting for the Glasgow Underground) or charges your phone comes thanks to innovations from a company not too far away.

So whenever someone tells you about the great advances being made in far-off places you might be able to tell them that it’s here as much as there where the action is.

Praise our own future-builders, they’re just as good as anyone else.

The Extraordinary Benefits of Meditation …

The ‘meditation-and-the-brain’ research has been growing in interest & popularity for a number of years now, with new studies coming out just about every week to illustrate some new benefit of meditation. Or, rather, some ancient benefit that is just now being confirmed!

Below are some of the most interesting studies to come out in the last few years and show that meditation really does produce measurable changes in our most important organ – the brain!

There’s good evidence from these studies that meditation helps relieve our subjective levels of anxiety and depression, and improve attention, concentration, and overall psychological well-being.

Meditation Helps Preserve the Aging Brain A recent study from the University of California (UCLA) found that long-term meditators had better-preserved brains than non-meditators as they aged. Participants who’d been meditating for an average of 20 years had more grey matter volume throughout the brain. And it’s NEVER too late to start!

Its Effects Rival Antidepressants for Depression & Anxiety A study Johns Hopkins University last year looked at the relationship between mindfulness meditation and its ability to reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and pain. When practised regularly, its effectiveness was comparable with the effects of taking medication. Meditation isn’t a magic bullet for depression, as no treatment is, but it is one of the tools that can help manage symptoms naturally!

Meditation May Lead to Volume Changes in Key Areas of the Brain In 2011, a Harvard study concluded that mindfulness meditation can actually change the structure of the brain: Eight weeks of Mindfulness Meditation was found to increase cortical thickness in the hippocampus, which governs learning and 20

memory. There were also decreases in brain cell volume in the amygdala, which is responsible for fear, anxiety, and stress – and these changes matched the participants’ self-reports of their stress levels, indicating that meditation not only changes the neuroplasticity of the brain, but it changes our psychological wellbeing, enabling us to cope better with life.

Just a Few Days of Training Improves Concentration and Attention Interestingly but not surprisingly, one of the central benefits of meditation is that it improves attention and concentration: One recent study found that just a couple of weeks of meditation training helped people’s focus and memory during tests & exams.

Since the strong focus of attention (on an object, idea, or activity) is one of the central aims of meditation, it’s not so surprising that meditation should help people’s cognitive skills on the job, too!

Meditation Reduces Anxiety — and Social Anxiety Research has also shown that mindfulness meditation, in contrast to attending to the breath only, can reduce anxiety Meditation Can Help with Addiction A growing number of studies has shown that, given its effects on the self-control regions of the brain, meditation can be very effective in helping people recover from various types of addiction.

Worth a Try? Meditation is not a panacea, but there’s certainly a lot of evidence that it may make profound positive changes for those who practice it regularly. Also, its benefits seem to be felt after a relatively short amount of practice.

POPPY SCOTLAND ROLLS OUT NEW WELFARE SUPPORT SERVICE IN EDINBURGH, FIFE AND THE LOTHIANS

Poppyscotland has launched an exciting new service that will transform the support available for the Armed Forces community in Scotland. A team of six will deliver the new, enhanced offering, including in Edinburgh, Fife and the Lothians, which will significantly enhance Poppyscotland’s already comprehensive range of support.

The Welfare Support Service will be available to the Armed Forces community across the whole of Scotland, but, crucially, it will have a strong local focus and will be tailored to the needs of each individual. The Welfare Support Service team will be made up of four Welfare Support Officers and two Independent Living Advisers, each working within a designated geographical area.

The Welfare Support Officer will provide support to vulnerable veterans and to those identified as having complex needs. These could range from mental or physical health to problems with money and housing. As well as acting as the personal point of contact for Poppyscotland’s clients, members of the new team will work alongside a wide network of agencies, professionals and volunteers to ensure veterans in Edinburgh, Fife and the Lothians who require support get the help needed.

Working alongside the Welfare Support Officer will be a locally-based Independent Living Advisor, who will provide support to help give those with a long term health issues the ability to maintain their independence and live in their own homes for longer. Many veterans are disabled and require continuing care, but often struggle to access the services they need.

Looking after Edinburgh, Fife and the Lothians alongside the Welfare Support Officer is Independent Living Adviser Sue McKay. Sue, who covers Edinburgh & Lothians, Fife, Dundee & Angus, Perth & Kinross, Aberdeen and the Highlands & Islands, said: “Having always been immersed in military life and the parent of a serving soldier, I am very excited to be part of this new service within Poppyscotland.I hope that my knowledge and expertise will help beneficiaries in leading as independent a life as possible. The service is beneficiary-focused, and I look forward to working in partnership with both statutory bodies and other charities to get the best outcome for the individual.”

Gary Gray, the Head of Welfare Services at Poppyscotland, said: “Poppyscotland is at the forefront of delivery of support to our Armed Forces community across Scotland.

We reach out to those who have served, those still serving, and their families at times of crisis and need by offering vital, practical advice, assistance and funding.This is a hugely significant development for veterans across the country. The implementation of the Welfare Support Service enables us to deliver greatly enhanced support in local communities across Scotland; providing one-to-one and face-to-face support to individuals who are particularly vulnerable and have complex needs.”

One such veteran that has received help from Poppyscotland is Chris Fisher, who served in the Royal Navy from 1970 to 1977 and now lives in Helensburgh with his wife Julie. Chris suffers from a progressive and degenerative disability, in which his body has been trying to form a foetal position. He only has the use of his left hand and his hips and knees have fused, meaning getting anywhere was impossible until Poppyscotland provided a grant for a specially adapted van which allows Chris to get out and about.

On the help he has received, Chris says: “I approached Poppyscotland and within two weeks I had a new van sitting in the driveway.

It’s emotional because without the van, I wouldn’t have a life, I wouldn’t be able to go outside and to do what other people take

for granted. I cannot thank Poppyscotland enough for all that they have done for me. It’s heartening to hear of the new Welfare Support Service that will help other veterans like me to access the right support in the right location.

I feel lucky to have got the support so quickly, but there are so many other veterans out there who have similarly complex needs and struggle to seek out help. However, the new Poppyscotland service will ensure that they have the right package of support put in place within their own community and that will make a huge difference.”

Be Strong for a Better Quality of Life

By Tracy Griffen In early September new physical activity guidelines were issued by UK Chief Medical Officers and published by the Government.

The guidelines emphasise the importance of building strength and balance for adults, and include recommendations for pregnant women, new mothers and disabled people.

According to the UK Government website (go to www.gov.uk and search ‘new physical activity guidelines): “Falls are the main reason older people are taken to A&E, and could be avoided through daily activities such as brisk walking, carrying heavy shopping, climbing stairs, swimming and gardening.”

The new guidelines are an update to those released in 2011, but the overall message remains the same: any activity is better than none, and more is better still.

“Under the new guidelines, adults are advised to undertake strength-based exercise at least 2 days a week. This can help delay the natural decline in muscle mass and bone density that starts from around age 50. It is believed that this is a major reason why older people lose their ability to carry out daily tasks.”

At Griffen Fitness I specialise in helping clients improve strength and balance with a variety of simple exercises that can be done in the home. Doing strength-based exercise at least 2 days a week may seem like a big ask, but if you know a basic 10 minute workout, it is very easy to fit into your everyday routine. Simple one-legged exercises can improve your balance and help prevent falls. 10 minutes a day can really improve your quality of life.

My older clients (some of them in their eighties) report that regular strength and balance exercise helps them feel more confident with the challenges of everyday life, including walking on uneven surfaces, baby-sitting boisterous grandchildren and lifting and carrying heavy loads. You’re never too old to learn how to exercise safely and effectively. A wee strength workout can give you more energy, zest for life and zippity doo dah!

The new guidelines also encourage increased measured (and suitable) exercise for new Mums and mothers-to-be to keep both Mum and baby fit and healthy...

Community Spotlight THE SINGING GROUPS @ INVERLEITH & NW EDINBURGH FOR PEOPLE WITH DEMENTIA & THEIR CARER(S) The Inverleith Group has been running since June 2010 meeting at 2.00 pm on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month. We currently meet at Inverleith St Serf’s Church Hall on Clark Road, Edinburgh. The NW Edinburgh Group started in May 2018 and meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month at Drylaw Parish Church.

The group is for people with dementia, and their carers, who still live at home in the community. Research has indicated that people with dementia leave singing groups ‘on a high’ and this positive mood can last for some time after each session. This is also good for the well being of the carer.

The group come together to sing with emphasis on enjoyment and fun. Volunteers are on hand but those with dementia should be accompanied. There is no charge for attending the Singing Sessions, but a donation for refreshments is appreciated.

The group meet for coffee and conversation at first, giving people a chance to socialise.

Support is also available from volunteers and other families. When singing begins, we sit in a circle ensuring that everyone is equal and not identified by their illness. We then sing along together for around 45 minutes, led by ‘music volunteers’.

The group was started by a small number of individuals who understood the importance of music and singing with people with Dementia. All our Volunteers undergo Dementia Awareness Training. Quails’ Eggs by Christine McArthur Christine McArthur’s delightful watercolour of quails’ eggs is just one of a large number of paintings on sale in October to help raise money for Christian Aid. From Thursday 24 to Saturday 26 October the whole of St Andrew and St George’s West church in George Street (opposite The Dome) will be full of works of art. For each of the three days the paintings will be for sale between 10am and 3pm.

This is the perfect opportunity to find that special Christmas present – and at a really competitive price. Not only that, but every penny raised helps the poorest right across the world.
