Hello And Welcome To The December Issue Of The Stockbridge Spotlight Welcome to this festive issue of the Spotlight. I can’t believe it is that time of year again!! I love Christmas but have to admit it is not quite the same now my boys are grown up. Definitely means less present wrapping though!!

As usual I will be taking a break in January but will be back with the next issue early February 2019. I wish everyone who receives the Spotlight a very Merry Christmas when it comes and a happy and prosperous New Year. A Calmer Christmas The season of goodwill can sometimes feel more like the season of discontent.

If you’re hoping to avoid the tantrums, sugar crashes and slamming doors this year (or some of them at least), keep reading…

FAMILY TIME It can be incredibly difficult to fit everything in around Christmas. Kids often seem to demand the most of you when you have the least to give. If you’re time-poor, think quality over quantity. Half an hour spent on a family activity now might well avoid a lengthy melt-down later on.

They Got Together For Nick

Following a presentation of harmonious excellence showcasing the combined talents of The Forth Valley Chorus, The Rolling Hills Chorus and The Gilmerton Singers, a cheque for £3.300 was presented to St Columba’s Hospice. The fundraiser took place on 20 Oct at the Central Hall, Edinburgh. The three groups came together for the first time to express their gratitude for the excellence of care provided by the Hospice for Nick Hayes who had been closely involved with each of the three choruses. They also wished to honour Nick for the many years he has supported and contributed to the development of all three organisations.

Sadly, Nick died just two weeks after the event. However, he was able to attend the concert and it obviously gave him enormous pleasure to hear the choruses perform many of his own musical arrangements, including his own composition “My Homeland” set to the tune of Highland Cathedral.

St Columba’s Hospice provides specialist care and support to patients with terminal conditions and to their families, across Edinburgh and the Lothians. Their aim is to give everyone within the communities access to free care, whoever they are, wherever they are, and whenever they need it. Nick was full of admiration for the work of the Hospice and the care he had received. He recently said “My stay in St Columba’s Hospice has been exceptional and hugely beneficial, both physically and mentally. New Year Resolutions – Weight? Smoking?

Hypnotherapy is really just giving you the tools to be how you want to be - whether it’s to lose weight, stop smoking, manage stress, break habits, lose phobias or a myriad of other problems …

Let’s have a look at weight loss: Research and clinical studies have shown that hypnosis works significantly well – both in the short term and long term – in enabling people to reduce their weight and keep it off!

The studies have found that people who used hypnosis lost more than twice as much weight as those who dieted without the therapy. Also a recent study found people who used hypno-behavioural techniques lost weight, improved their eating habits, improved their body image and, very importantly, their self-talk.

Emotional and unconscious eaters are prime candidates for hypnotherapy. Often by the time a client comes to me, they’ve usually tried every weight loss plan on the planet. They have often had a measured degree of success – perhaps being enrolled in one of the multi-billion £ clubs that promote weight loss via weekly meetings with weigh-ins, products, literature etc – however many people can get so far then fail. Sometimes people have even been able to reach their goals, but then they put the weight back on again, and more. It’s just and endless depressing yo-yo cycle of weight loss and weight gain.

So what’s the secret missing ingredient? (please pardon the pun) It is the MINDSET. If someone has experienced repeated failures and is in the yo-yo diet mode, then they may have subconsciously set themselves up for failure.

Successful, sustainable, safe and healthy weight management is about effectively re-programming the “self-sabotage” button in the weight loss mindset. Hypnotherapy & positive mindset techniques are a potent winning combination!

What foods should you avoid feeding your dog this Christmas?

As tempting as it is to share your favourite festive treats with your dog, there are certain foods they shouldn’t eat – and some are potentially deadly.

So which ones should you avoid giving to your dog this Christmas?

Turkey Turkey is a rich meat that can disturb a dog’s digestive system, potentially to the point of serious illness. Some dogs may be fine with a tiny amount

of white boneless turkey meat, but the skin is very fatty and the bones are a choking hazard.

Chocolate Chocolate is one Christmas treat that needs to be avoided at all costs, unless you buy doggy chocs for your pet. Chocolate contains a compound that’s poisonous to dogs – in fact, chocolate poisoning is so serious that if they eat too much they’ll need to have their stomach pumped.

Mince pies, Christmas pudding, and Christmas cake Raisins are severely toxic to dogs, with grape and raisin poisoning being a common problem often requiring veterinary intervention to prevent further serious health issues – one of these being

kidney failure.

Nuts Nuts can cause severe gastrointestinal problems for your dog, with obstruction of the bowel being a particular issue.

Some varieties of nut, including pecans and walnuts, can bring on seizures and should be avoided at all costs.

Clearly there’s a case for watching your dog very carefully over Christmas. Ageing Well Think you’re too old to exercise? Think again! As an experienced Personal Trainer I’m seeing more and more seniors who would like to stay mobile as they age.

your age, that you do some simple strength exercises to keep your muscles in shape and to enjoy a better quality of life. Simple things, like being able to push yourself up from the floor if you fall, become more important as we age. And increasingly we are living to an older age, where there may not always be 24 hour care for us.

So, it is possible to train your balance and help slow some of the signs of ageing. Add to this, regular measured exercise can help improve energy levels and also maintain

your range of movement. It’s important that the exercises are safe, but effective.

Certain exercises that young folk might enjoy (i.e. high intensity jumping around) are not appropriate if you are struggling to stay upright! Indeed, it is possible to have an effective strength workout from a seated position. You can workout as you watch the tv!

If you’re unsure of where to start, it’s a good idea to ask a fitness professional.

Find a trainer who has experience with your age demographic (my details are below!) and it’s a good idea to let them know of any pre-existing medical conditions.

Short Story Christmas Carol

Chris and Sophie had become engaged after what Chris’s parents, Kevin and Jenny, considered a bit of a whirlwind romance, so inviting Sophie’s mum over for Christmas dinner had seemed like a good way for the two families to get to know each other.

Carol had arrived earlier than expected, accompanied by a vibrant purple perm, flashing reindeer antlers and a crate of stout.

“I’ll just park myself here.” She wedged herself at the kitchen table. “Pass me a bottle will you?”

“I’m surprised our Chris didn’t offer you a lift,” Jenny said, taking a glass off the shelf.

“It’s not how we brought him up, is it Kevin?”

Carol knocked the cap off her stout on the edge of the table. “Men! My third husband treated his python better then he treated me.”

“Have you been married three times, Carol?” Jenny stirred the bread sauce nervously. This was news.

“I wish I’d stopped at three.” Carol shook her head. “Mind you,” she added with a belch, “I’m currently young, free and single.”

She fluttered her eyelashes menacingly at Kevin, who affected a sudden fascination with the contents of the cutlery drawer.

“Let’s hope divorce doesn’t run in the family,” Jenny laughed nervously, “for all our sakes.”

“Nah, my daughter’s got her head screwed on right.” Carol waved her almost empty glass. “Of course, she was engaged to that chap from the fish market. Nice lad.” She took a final slurp. “Hold your horses I said to her, do you really want your curtains smelling of crab sticks?”

“When was this?” Jenny asked casually, turning down the gas under the pan of sprouts.

“It was after she’d called off the wedding to that other chap, who worked on the bins.”

She adjusted her drooping antlers. “I wasn’t keen on him. He had really long arms.”

“Is that right?” Jenny nudged Kevin.

“And then there was that fella from Hartlepool.” Carol reached for another bottle. “I’d say, on average, she gets engaged every six months. I’ve stopped bothering the hat shop now.”

Jenny looked at Kevin in alarm.

“I wonder what’s holding the love birds up?”

Jenny folded up a tea-towel decisively.

“Kevin, could give me a hand with something in the hall?”

“Certainly love.” Kevin followed her, relieved to be out of the kitchen.

“Well that’s Christmas ruined,” Jenny whispered to him at the foot of the stairs.

“Why’s that?” Kevin said.

“Haven’t you been listening?” She wrung her hands on her apron. “Sophie’s going to break our poor boy’s heart.”

“Here they are now,” he said, as the front door opened.

“Sorry we’re late.” Chris, his arms laden with gifts, leaned over to kiss Jenny’s cheek.

“Merry Christmas.”

“What held you up?” Jenny said. “And where’s Sophie?”

“We got talking to the Chadburns over the road.” He pushed the door shut with his foot. “Their nutty aunt hasn’t turned up and they’re panicking. Sophie and Rose are helping them call the police.”

“Who’s Rose?” Kevin asked, relieving Chris of his load.

“Sophie’s mum,” Chris said, taking off his coat.

“Then who’s Carol?” Jenny asked.

“Carol? That’s what the missing aunt’s called.” Chris sounded surprised.

“Apparently she’s a bit of a handful.”

Potted Smoked Salmon Serves 6

Ready in 30 minutes, plus chilling time

This is the perfect starter for the lunch on the big day – you can make it the night before and the recipe will easily double up if you are feeding a crowd at Christmas!

Reserve about 25g of the salmon flakes for garnish (cover and chill in the fridge until required).

• 275g honey roast salmon

flakes

Place the rest of the salmon flakes in a food processor with the smoked salmon, butter, soft cheese, horseradish and lemon juice. Process until smooth and creamy. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper and process for a further few seconds.

• 250g smoked salmon

slices, chopped • 100g unsalted butter,

softened • 125g full-fat soft cheese • 2 tsp creamed horseradish

Divide the mixture between 6 small ramekin dishes and level the surface.

Cover and chill in the fridge until required. Garnish with the rest of the salmon flakes, dill sprigs and green peppercorns. Serve with toasted brown or granary bread.

TIP

Most supermarkets sell packs of ready-flaked honey roast salmon but if unavailable just buy ready-cooked smoked salmon fillets and roughly flake the fish, discarding any skin and fine bones.
