Welcome To The June/July Stockbridge Spotlight.

Its hard to believe that as this issue drops through your door the summer holiday season will almost be upon us. How fast has this year gone!!

And of course, in Edinburgh, with the summer comes the Edinburgh Fringe. We have a few shows advertising in this issue, some of them right on your doorstep in Stockbridge Church. Plus we have a competition to win Fringe Show tickets and an opportunity to get a discount on some tickets as well. Check out pages 12 to 15 for more details.

Also right on your doorstep, the Botanic Gardens are having a summer exhibition to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the garden’s glasshouses. Nothing beats a visit to the Botanics on a sunny summers day and I am sure the exhibition will be well worth dropping in to see.

As usual I will be taking a break over the summer so the next issue will not come through your doors until the 23rd of August, the week after the schools go back. Much as I love running the Spotlight I am looking forward to some well earned time off to recharge my batteries and enjoy a family holiday in the sun. But I will be back, refreshed and ready for the August/September issue and - dare I mention it - the run up to the busy Christmas period.

I hope that you have a fantastic summer and that the Scottish weather is kind to us all.

History As wedding season begins, have you ever stopped to wonder where many of our modern-day marriage traditions started?

Wedding rings are traditionally worn on the fourth finger of the left hand because the Romans believed this finger had a vein, the vena amoris, which was directly connected to the heart. The ring represented the groom’s wealth and formed part of the wedding contract to provide for and own his spouse.

The diamond engagement ring took off in the late 19th century at the height of diamond mining in South Africa when the De Beers Diamond Company launched a successful advertising campaign. Today 80% of engagement rings are still diamond ones.

Queen Victoria started the trend for wearing a white wedding gown in 1840. The veil symbolised a bride’s virginity and humility before God, as well as saving her beauty for her husband (who would lift the veil when she arrived at the altar). However, in the days when arranged marriages were common, it wasn’t unusual for the groom to have never laid eyes on his bride before.

The veil was an effective way of ensuring he didn’t cut and run before she got to the altar!

Bridal bouquets were carried as a symbol of fertility and to hide unpleasant smells (the norm in ages when there was little sanitation). The custom of the bride throwing it to the crowd replaced one where guests would rip pieces off the hem of her gown for good luck.

It was once even customary for the bridal party to follow the couple to their bedroom and watch the act of consummation. The tossing of the bride’s garter is symbolic of this (thankfully) long dead practice.

The notion that the bride should wear ‘something old, new, borrowed and blue’ comes from an old English saying that ends ‘and a sixpence in your shoe’. It is based around superstition meant to bring the couple good luck and a happy marriage.

Wedding Customs

By Catherine Rose During the ceremony, the groom stands on the righthand side of the bride so that he can have his sword arm free to fight off other potential suitors.

Historically, bridesmaids and groomsmen would dress identically to the bride and groom respectively to both ‘fool evil spirits’ and to confuse would-be kidnappers of the bride (yes, in the days of rival tribes and warring families, bridal kidnap wasn’t uncommon).

In many cultures, including High Church of England, the couple’s hands are either wrapped or bound together during the ceremony leading to the phrase ‘tying the knot’.

One of the most famous traditions, the wedding cake, also began in ancient Rome.

A sweet bread was broken over the bride’s head as a fertility charm. Wedding guests would be served handfuls of the nuts and dried fruits used to make it; known as confetto, it was thrown over the couple for good luck.

The custom of a ‘tiered’ cake at weddings started in medieval times when they would be stacked to form a high tower. The bride and groom had to kiss over the top without toppling it over; if they succeeded, a life of prosperity was assured.

Finally, the honeymoon or ‘hony moone’ dates from the 14th century and has nothing to do with honey. It was simply coined to describe the brief sweetness of that first month of marriage.

Should You Pay Off Debts With Your Pension?

hen you get back from a hard day’s work, or when you simply find the time to escape into the garden after a stressful day, then it is essential that you are met by a soothing environment. It is all very well creating a garden with lots of straight lines and wacky bits of metalwork, but if you want to really let your garden take the strain, then concentrate on a truly relaxing feel that will help you to unwind as you enjoy soft shades and textures of foliage, delicate flower colours and fabulous perfumes.

Plants have an amazing ability to calm and soothe even the most wound up, stressed out mood, but what should you grow if you really want to create that perfect place to relax?

Start by considering a fairly gentle perfume, like that produced by many roses. One of my favourites is ‘Felicia’. For something slightly richer try ‘Tuscany Superb’.

If you have an arch, arbour, pergola or even a spare bit of fence then train a honeysuckle over it. The combination of its delicately coloured flowers and fabulous perfume will cheer you up and you can even enjoy it in the early evening as you sit back and relax with a cup or glass of your favourite tipple!

A sowing of night-scented stock will produce plants that, although not flamboyant, have the most heavenly rich perfume – also perfect for early evening relaxation as this is when the flowers open and produce wafts of really sweet scent.

If you have space for a good-sized container plant, then grow your own Datura or Brugmansia. Commonly known as the angel’s trumpet and although potentially very poisonous, these plants produce large elegant trumpet-shaped flowers with a wonderful perfume.

Think too of plants with a relaxing feel to them, such as the grass Chasmanthium latifolium. This grows to a height of about 45 cm and carries its flattened seed heads in vast numbers above the leaves. They move about delicately in the breeze and are almost impossible not to stroke.

Grow some Artemisia abrotanum - its soft, wonderfully grey-green leaves will make you want to touch it, and when you do so you will find it also releases a lovely aroma.

The perfume of lavender is often used in aromatherapy because of its calming, soothing properties, so what could be better to grow in a sunny spot with free-draining soil than some lavender? You can even use it to edge a border providing conditions are right, and it not only has lovely, slightly furry or felt-like foliage but also produces that heavenly smell.

Take a look at some of the grasses and bamboos that are available; the rustling sound of bamboo foliage as the stems sway gently in a breeze, or as you brush your hand against them, is one of the most relaxing sounds I know, and for smaller spaces many of the grasses form

wonderfully rounded and quite irresistible clumps of foliage.

When it comes to choosing favourite flowers, don’t forget that although some bright colour is a good way to cheer you up, if you want to relax then concentrate on cream, white and, of course, the pastel shades. There are a host of these available for annuals, perennials, shrubs and climbers. Don’t forget that green is known to be a relaxing colour too, so ensure that you include plenty of plants with good foliage and, in shady areas, you may find that a miniature grotto-like patch planted up with ferns is just what you need.

Speak A New Language In A Week!

This summer, following rave reviews last year, Speak Out Languages is helping Edinburghers speak a new language in a week! Speak in a Week gets learners speaking practical French, German, Italian or Spanish in 10 hours, over the space of a week in July.

Ruth Allan, Founder of Speak Out Languages, said ‘We were receiving phone calls from people who had booked a last minute trip, and wanted to get the basics so they could communicate comfortably while away. So we condensed our traditional 10 week Speak Out courses into a week, with fantastic results!’

Speak Out courses are different from traditional language courses. They focus on building confidence to speak, rather than on writing or grammar exercises. And as part of each course, there is the option of a trip to Europe to put everything into practice. Ruth said ‘traditional language courses are fine for exams, but if you want to travel and meet locals, it’s all a question of being confident enough to give it a go.’

The show at Inverleith House and in the Lower Temperate House will present new and existing works by contemporary artists alongside archival material, botanical and historical paintings.

We welcome our new councillors for our ward – returning Cllr Gavin Barrie and Cllr Iain Whyte and our new Cllr Hal Osler and Cllr Max Mitchell.

Those of you affected by the 42 bus route will be pleased to note that the Council has provided funding to enable the full extent of the 42 Bus route to be reinstated for a period of six months; after this period, the viability of the route will be reconsidered.

The Water of Leith clean-up on May 14th attracted an encouragingly high level of local participation – thanks everyone who turned up to help clean up the river.

The Council consultation on the revision of ‘town centre’ planning guidance for Stockbridge has led to us setting up a working group to offer proposals to the Council about our town centre – if anyone has any thoughts on this or would like to get involved please get in touch.

The official opening of Number 7 Raeburn Place will be on May 27th 2017 this is a community space set up by Stockbridge Parish church - Pop in to support them and see what they do.

Last year we organised a Community Consultation and the outcome was to identify three areas of priority concern for the local community which are being taken further Health & Social Care, Mental Health, and Young People.

Stockfest 2017 will be happening again this year September 4th – 10th, 2017 – watch out for more information nearer the time.

Our next meetings are June 21st and August 16th 2017. Meetings are held at Stockbridge Parish Church Saxe Coburg St. at 7pm. The June meeting will start with the AGM. We have recently lost two members of the Community Council so we are looking for new members. Please get in touch if you are interested.

Heatstroke Symptoms can include headache, dizziness, confusion, appetite loss, feeling sick, excessive sweating, pale clammy skin, cramps, fast breathing or pulse, a temperature of 37C or above and intense thirst.

If someone is suffering from heatstroke, lie them down in the shade, raise their feet, offer cold drinks and remove unnecessary clothing.

Call 999 if they’re no better after 30 minutes or if symptoms worsen.

To avoid heatstroke, stay hydrated, keep your head covered and rest in the shade when the sun is hottest.

Our Stockbridge 100 Years Of Stories, History, Friendship And Community Did you know that Stockbridge once had a beetroot factory? At local occasions you could always tell who had been working hard in the factory as no matter how clean their clothes, their purple stained hands were a giveaway.

Children’s days were filled with playing peevers, skipping, tig, hide and seek, ding dong dash and rounders in near-empty streets. Only the laundry van trundled along threatening to disrupt playtime.

As many didn’t have baths in their homes, Glenogle Baths was the place to get a wash for a shilling or 1/6d. If you paid a shilling that meant the man on duty controlled how much water you had!

If you did go for a swim, there was always a Shivery Bite to munch on afterwards. Cod liver oil and orange juice were dolled out on a regular basis and sweets from the local shop were a highly rationed treat.

At school, slate boards and pencils took the place that iPads and laptops do now, and if you scored under 8/10 on an arithmetic test you’d be in for a (sometimes painful) punishment.

Everyone went home from school for lunch and during the war Flora Stevenson’s even became an ARP station.

On Henderson Row women would bring prams piled with washing and washboards to the wash house. A dapple grey rocking horse stood nearby to entertain the kids while the week’s washing was done. Life was very different from the hightech, fast paced decade we’re currently in.

Stockbridge has changed significantly over the years, and yet the sense of community and village-like feel has stayed the same. These stories are from ‘Our Stockbridge’, an intergenerational project run by LifeCare to tell the stories of those who grew up in Stockbridge between 1920 and 1960 through a film made by local 10-13 year olds.

Funded by Big Lottery and Inverleith Neighbourhood Partnership, LifeCare worked with local creatives Media Education to interview local residents about their childhood memories from the area, and worked with Stockbridge Primary School and local children to develop a film about growing up in Stockbridge through the ages.

LifeCare, who run the community centre on Cheyne Street, support over 60s and those living with dementia across Edinburgh and wanted to find a fresh way to share stories across the generations.

This month, on Friday 23rd June from 2pm – 3.30pm ‘Our Stockbridge’ will be having a free film screening and exhibition at the LifeCare centre on Cheyne Street to showcase the stories from the project.

We would be delighted if as many local people as possible could come along, all ages are welcome. There will be tea and coffee and a special Stockbridge themed cake kindly donated by Edinburgh Cake Parlour.

BOARDROOM BONUS FOR STOCKBRIDGE A new business set up in Stockbridge is throwing open its doors to the local community.

Well known Edinburgh property expert Mark Cullerton, founding partner of McEwan Fraser Legal, is the man behind Cullerton’s Estate Agents and Property Consultants, which is based in the premises formerly occupied by the Flaubert Art Gallery in St Stephen Street.

Centrepiece of the new office is an impressive boardroom which can comfortably accommodate at least 10 people around a 3.5m x 1.2m oval walnut table. With a 50” plasma TV, the room is also ideal for presentations or corporate events. There are also tea and coffeemaking facilities in an adjoining kitchen.

“Opening up the boardroom to the public was something I didn’t have to think twice about,” said Mark.“My intention is to give something back to the community. I didn’t realise what a great community spirit there is in Stockbridge until I set up the office here. It really is a fabulous area to be in.

The boardroom is a good space and I’d like to see it utilised by the local community, whoever that may be. There are a number of local associations here and I will be happy to welcome anyone should they feel they would benefit from having access to the boardroom for meetings, presentations, etc.

It isn’t my intention to rent the boardroom out and it is available free of charge to those who think they could make good use of it.

My door is always open and I’d be delighted to chat to anyone looking to take advantage of it.”

The Great Beyond Tech tools to help you wherever you may roam

Whether you’re hiking up mountains or just trying to get around Glastonbury, travelling can be made much easier with a few wellchosen gadgets - and some of the available options might surprise you. Fancy a hairgrip that doubles as a saw? Such things exist: the Monkey Business Multi-Tool Hairgrip (around £8.50) comes in stainless steel and is shaped to include a little wrench, screwdriver, cutter and ruler as well as being a hair grip. You can also use it in shopping trolleys instead of coins, although that only applies to pre-2017 ones: the new twelvesided pound coin has sadly made most trolley coins redundant.

Fancy something a bit sturdier? Since the wonderful Leatherman became a global hit, there’s been no shortage of multi-tools that attempt to provide everything you could possibly need in a single gadget. If you have Leatherman ambitions but not the accompanying budget, you’ll find cheaper options from the likes of supermarket favourite Rolson, whose 36019 multi-tool offers 12 stainless steel tools for £13.41.

Just don’t take it anywhere you’re not allowed blades, such as airports.

If you’d rather have something a little more high tech, the world of wearables continues to grow: for example TomTom’s Runner watches combine activity tracking with GPS for around £59, and there are even GPS-enabled trackers for kids such as the Witmoving Wrist Watch, which is available for around £19. The benefit of such kids’ watches is that they enable a lost child to 34

press the SOS button to call a parent or guardian, and the companion app can tell you exactly where the child is if they wander off. Be aware that anything using a phone SIM, such as the Witmoving watch, will need a data contract: a pay as you go deal from the likes of budget operator Giffgaff, which uses O2’s network, offers reliable coverage for a low price. You can spend much more on a fully-featured smartwatch that does pretty much everything, but for now if it’s pure activity tracking you’re looking for, a running watch such as the TomTom is a better, cheaper option.

Chances are wherever you’re going, you’ll want to keep your phone charged - and if you’re far from a plug socket that isn’t always easy. The most effective portable chargers, such as the Anker PowerCore 13000 (around £24), are designed to be charged at home then used when your phone battery runs out of puff. They boast a range of features to charge quickly and turn off the power when the battery’s full. They’re a little bulky compared to emergency phone chargers, which tend to give you just enough power to make a few calls, but they’re good for multiple full charges.

Solar chargers are more environmentally friendly - at least, after they’ve been manufactured - and they can be quite cheap: Amazon currently lists a number of decent 10000mAh solar chargers for around £15, some of which can charge multiple devices simultaneously and double as LED flashlights. Be aware that such chargers only use solar energy as a backup: like other portable chargers they’ve got a great big battery inside them that you’re expected to charge before you go out and about. The panel is there for peace of mind should your adventure last longer than expected, but in the British summer don’t expect a full charge to happen very quickly.

Fabulous Flapjacks Personal Trainer Tracy Griffen’s Secret Healthy Snacking Weapon.

Make a tray of fabulous flapjacks at the beginning of the week and you’ll have snacks for the rest of the week. They’re also excellent for energy on the go instead of those awful energy gels. I usually wrap them up once cooled and hide them so I don’t eat them all at once...

I like to think these are healthier than shop bought snacks, as despite having sugar (brown) and fat (butter) in, they are all natural. And it’s EASY!

Ingredients • • • • • • • • •

50g butter, melted 100g soft brown sugar, I prefer less 1 free range organic egg (as happy hens lay better eggs) 1 teaspoon mixed spice 1 teaspoon baking powder 150g porridge oats 50g plain flour 100g raisins / dried cranberries / sunflower / pumpkin seeds / mixed nuts 1 dessertspoon of golden syrup (optional)

1. In a bowl, mix the butter and soft brown sugar. Add the egg and mix.

2.Weigh the plain flour straight into the bowl, add baking powder and mixed spice and mix.

3. Now add porridge oats and seeds / dried fruit, (I like sunflower seeds and dried cranberries). Mix well together. If you have any golden syrup, a dessertspoon here will ensure they stay soft and chewy, but it’s not vital.

4. They are now ready to cook. You can use 12 paper cupcake cases, or spoon directly into a lightly greased muffin tray. Alternatively, you can use a baking tray, but wait until the flapjacks are completely cold before cutting them up.

5. Bake at 150 degrees for around 15 minutes. They are nicer underdone rather than too crunchy.

6. Cool and wrap individually.

Community Spotlight THE SINGING GROUP @ INVERLEITH FOR PEOPLE WITH DEMENTIA & THEIR CARER(S) Our group has been running since June 2010 meeting at 2.00 pm on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month. We currently meet at Inverleith St Serf’s Church Hall on Clark Road, Edinburgh The group is for people with dementia, and their carers, who still live at home in the community. Research has indicated that people with dementia leave singing groups ‘on a high’ and this positive mood can last for some time after each session. This is also good for the well being of the carer.

The group come together to sing with emphasis on enjoyment and fun. Volunteers are on hand but those with dementia should be accompanied. There is no charge for attending the Singing Sessions, but a donation for refreshments is appreciated.

The group meet for coffee and conversation first, giving people a chance to socialise.

Support is also available from volunteers and other families. When singing begins, we sit in a circle ensuring that everyone is equal and not identified by their illness. We then sing along together for around 45 minutes, led by ‘music volunteers’.

The group was started by a small number of individuals in June 2010 who understood the importance of music and singing with people with Dementia. All our Volunteers undergo Dementia Awareness Training.

Chicken wings are a great budget buy and perfect for a TV dinner or speedy supper. Serve with a home-made coleslaw or rice salad for a more substantial meal.

Preheat the oven to 200C, 180 fan, gas 6. Place the wings on a metal rack set over a roasting tin and roast in the preheated oven for 15 minutes.

1 kg chicken wings 8tbsp tomato ketchup 2tbsp Worcestershire sauce 3tbsp smooth mango chutney 2tsp Dijon mustard 1tbsp sunflower oil

FOR THE DIP

Meanwhile, make the sticky glaze by mixing together the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, mango chutney, mustard and oil in a small bowl. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

• 150ml soured cream • 2 spring onions, trimmed and finely chopped • 1tbsp fresh snipped chives

Remove the roasting tin from the oven and liberally brush the glaze all over the chicken wings.

TIP

You can cook the wings on a hot barbecue for an al fresco supper. It’s best to cook them in the oven for the first 15 minutes then glaze and just place them on the barbecue for the last 15-20 minutes of cooking time.

Return the roasting tin to the oven and roast the wings for a further 1520 minutes until the wings are golden brown and slightly charred in places.

Mix together the dip ingredients in a small bowl. Serve with the chicken wings.
