At the end of the workshop, each group reported its decisions about the options provided. Not surprisingly, each group arrived at a different set of recommendations for the federal budget.

In making their choices, all the groups used both tax increases and decreases, and program expansion and reduction to achieve their final budgets, each of which resulted in a significant decrease in the federal deficit over the next 10 years. It should be noted that none of the groups felt that, as legislators, they would be re-electable based upon their budget decisions.

This may suggest that getting politics out of the equation does make budget-making a much more efficient and reasonable activity.

While the groups were randomly assembled, it was clear, even among these small groups, that budget decisions and the discussions around them can depend upon not only politi-

cal orientation, but other variables, such as age.

For example, one group was composed of four “elders” and one young person. In that group, the elders tended to focus on protecting social security and healthcare, while the young participant kept reminding the group to consider the wishes or perceptions of a majority of their constituents regardless of their personal views in order to be re-elected.

In general, the exercise revealed the importance of citizens being better informed about the budget and of electing persons who have the willingness to educate themselves sufficiently well on the crucial issues underlying each option under consideration. While the evening’s exercises led to increased understanding and sympathy for members of Congress faced with putting together our federal budget, participants also wondered: “If we can do it, why can’t Congress?”

Southwire has joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ENERGY STAR® Program. ENERGY STAR is a voluntary program managed by the U.S. EPA, supported by U.S. Department of Education (DOE) and Natural Resources Canada, that is focused on improving energy efficiency in buildings, plants and homes.

“We’re excited to partner with ENERGY STAR,” said Norman Adkins, Southwire’s Chief Operating Officer (COO). “As a part of this partnership, we plan to improve energy efficiency at a faster pace throughout our company operations.”

In support of the company’s Growing Green initiative, Southwire aims to reduce its environmental footprint and maintains a deep commitment to responsible growth and actively integrating environmental priorities into its core operations. In July 2020, Southwire announced its Carbon Zero goal to eliminate or offset all of the company’s Scope 1 - associated with fuel combustion - and Scope 2 - associated with electricity consumption - greenhouse gas emissions by 2025.

Partners Advancing Student Success (PASS) states 94% passing rate Partners Advancing Student Success had a nearly 94% graduation rate among served students. The local non-profit focused on student success released its end of year report for the 2022-23 school year at a celebration breakfast last week. Stakeholders including donors, board members, and volunteers heard from student speakers, advocates, Executive Director Brooke Mobley and Board Chair Amy Brown.

PASS aims to increase student success and high school graduation rates by providing services and support to at-risk high school students.

PASS advocates in each local high school work to remove barriers, improve student performance and keep students on track for graduation.

The 2022-23 school year was a time of transition for PASS as longtime Executive Director Cynthia Langley retired and a number of other staff changes occurred, Mobley said.

During the 2022-23 school year, PASS had a total duplicated reach of 34,691 contacts with students. That’s up from 18,469 the previous year. Total reach includes every contact PASS has with students throughout the year, Mobley said, and represents whole school services like career days, adulting days and interview days.

PASS advocates also conduct smaller grouplevel meetings and events which totalled 1,759 student contacts in 2022-23. Each PASS advo-

cate has an assigned list of students who have been recommended for personal, one-on-one support. Last school year, saw 308 of these case-load students served individually by PASS advocates. That number is from 283 the prior year. Of these individual students who were high school seniors, 93.9% graduated, up from 93.3% the prior year.

The work of PASS is made possible by grants and the support of community partners.

Since 2019, PASS has hosted Ladies Night Out as its signature event to raise awareness and funds for the organization and to provide a night of fashion and fun for the west Georgia area. The event typically features a fashion show from local boutiques, auction items, shopping, red carpet photos and much more.

The 2023 event was held in July and raised a record $94,000 in support of the organization’s efforts.

“One thing I want our community to understand is that PASS is doing crucial work to help struggling students succeed,” board chair Amy Brown said. “It takes the support of our community to generate the funds necessary, and we are so thankful for those partners, sponsors and donors who recognize the need and show up – some to volunteer, some with supplies, some with money. It takes us all.”

WGTC opens Regional Workforce Training Center Industry and community partners joined West Georgia Technical College (WGTC) President Dr. Julie Post and Vice President of Economic Development Steve Cromer as they officially cut the ribbon on the College’s Regional Workforce Training Center (RWTC).

The Regional Workforce Training Center is a regional hub that offers customized training to the community. It was created to help employers quickly and efficiently close the skills gap that many employers are currently facing.

“Our job is workforce development,” WGTC President Dr. Julie Post said. “The Regional Workforce Training Center stands as a testament to our dedication to fostering economic growth and meeting the demands of a rapidly changing job market. This state-of-theart facility is equipped with resources and technology that will ensure our customers receive top-tier training in alignment with industry standards.”

The RWTC offers a subscription model that allows business and industry partners to schedule training for their employees well in advance so that production schedules are less impacted. The training can be scheduled at the RWTC throughout the calendar year and when possible, the training can be scheduled at employer facilities for maximum convenience.

Last January, WGTC was selected to receive a $400,000 grant from the Strada Education Network to launch the RWTC. Strada created this grant-making initiative as the first step in a strategy to partner with community colleges to support stronger regional economies and communities. Delta Airlines’ Ground Support Equipment (Delta GSE) division was the first to utilize the RWTC. Kia, Duracell, Hyundai Transys, Hyundai Mobis, Kason Industries, Bonnell Aluminum, Nestle Purina, Yamaha, Kimberly-Clark, Douglas Chamber, Newnan-Coweta Chamber, and the LaGrange-Troup Chamber of Commerce have also taken advantage of training at the RWTC. The purpose of the stateof-the-art facility will be to recondition used vehicles to be sold to customers at CarMax stores in the Atlanta region, with the ability to ship nationwide.

CarMax aims to hire up to 100 automotive professionals by the location’s opening in February 2024, and an additional 100 automotive professionals by early 2025. Open positions at the center will include technicians, detailers, painters, supply associates, and more.

Centering on the business side of agriculture, Stephanie Stuckey gave a heartwarming presentation of her efforts to revive her grandfather’s brand which could only start with bringing the production of its sweet treats, including the famous pecan log roll, back to Georgia. An old household name dating back to 1937, Stuckey’s had humble beginnings as a roadside pecan stand in Eastman, GA, but quickly rose to prominence as the place to stop on a road trip through the early 70s, in part because of the interstate highway system but mostly because of the leadership of W.S. Stuckey, Sr. However, when he passed away, the company steadily declined until Stephanie came into leadership.

“When I bought Stuckey’s in 2019, it was six figures in the red,” said Stephanie. “The candy plant and distribution center my grandfather had were both long gone, and all the candy was being outsourced.

“My very first day of buying the company, I got us in the Georgia Grown program,” she continued. “I got a government loan to buy a manufacturing facility in Georgia and started buying 100% from Georgia farmers. I said we’re going to sell products again that we’re making ourselves. We’re going to quit outsourcing, and we’re going to provide jobs and build a community.” Four years later, Stephanie has completely turned the company around. With more than a thousand retailers selling Stuckey’s products along with owning and operating a distribution center and a pecanprocessing and candy-making plant, her grandfather’s legacy lives on because she adopted his adaptability and concern for community.

Tanner’s President and CEO Loy Howard among Georgia’s 500 most Influential Leaders for second year For the second straight year, Tanner Health System President and CEO Loy Howard’s leadership in health care as earned him a place among Georgia’s top leaders, according to business and industry publication Georgia Trend. Howard is featured in Georgia Trend magazine’s “Georgia 500” for 2023 including 500 of Howard the state’s most influential leaders. The issue - now in its second year published this month. Georgia Trend also noted that Howard has served as CEO of the nonprofit, community-based local health system for almost 30 years, growing it into the fivehospital health system that it is today serving northwest Georgia and east Alabama.

Georgia Trend publisher Ben Young said the periodical intentionally omitted elected officials, instead focusing on leaders contributing to the state’s economic and industrial development, directly creating opportunities for Georgia residents. LLC was requesting nine (9) variances from various sections of the zoning ordinance for their property located within the I-20 Gateway Activity Center, Commercial Activity Center, and Suburban Village Character Areas. The site is located within the Carroll County portion of the city and does not border any unincorporated areas. It does not feature any streams or natural water features.

Jeff Matthews has owned some of this property since 1985, and acquired seven (7) more pieces over the years. He said he has passed on offers from several entities, saving it for a commercial site business. This property has been studied by a Professional Site Evaluation service and was chosen because it has the population with enough income to support many different types of commercial businesses that are looking to make money on their investments.

Matthews said he has spoken with Longhorn, Outback, Texas Roadhouse, Whata-Burger, a grocery store, and many other businesses that are interested in Villa Rica because the city has turned the corner population-wise to support them locating here.

Because the city does not have a zoning code for shopping centers, due to the fact they have never needed it before, the property currently has three different zoning codes and nine variances were identified as being needed to move forward with the development. The Mayor and Council went over each of the nine variance requests with Matthews as well as his Engineer John Bass, and ultimately approved seven (7) of them, with one being withdrawn by the applicant and one changed regarding the minimum feet in width of planting area between parking areas adjacent to other developed parcels.

VA-12-23, application for a variance by Charles Bishop for the Snow Cone at 133 West Bankhead Highway was tabled for the second month in a row due to the applicant’s failure to appear.

VA-11-23, application for three variances from architectural standards, was requested by JCC Villa Rica, LLC, for the development at 1305 W. Bankhead Highway, all three of which were approved by council subject to fire department approval for single gated ingress/ egress.

VA-14-23, application for two variances from the zoning ordinance was requested by Flournoy Development Group, in regard to development at Villa Rica Parkway/Mirror Lake Blvd., for half of the 56 townhome units to have a one-car garage and half a two-car garage, as well as shorten driveway length to 23 feet. Driveways length ariance was tabled due to some council members’ concerns about the 23-foot driveways and whether the developer could make the community gated and avoid spending police time on people parking on the streets. Applicant said he is willing to try and come up with a different plan and come back before council next month.

The REAL Theatre - “Raw, Elemental, Artistic, Live” - is the brainstorm and passion project of co-founder and Artistic Director Patrick Yuran. “The REAL Theatre is the first professional, and only regional, theatre company here. We are ready to both entertain and educate! I am very excited about helping bring up and bring out the next generation of actors, writers, and producers - tapping into and guiding the real talent that is right here in West Georgia!”

Co-Artistic Director Doug Chanelle-Hary and Production/Technical Director Ed Thrower round out the three-man team of The REAL Theatre. All three are, and have been, long time professionals in the threatre industry, with impressive credentials and amazing connections that heighten the excitement and anticipation of what’s to come. Yuran described REAL’s mission speaking with great elan, “We will be working to connect our audiences to the performance experience - the real, the intimate! We want audience members to be able to sit in that space we create and feel close to what is happening - an immersive experience. This is really about a connection with this experience.” REAL’s mission states: “to provide exceptional performing arts experiences that, enrich, enpower, and engage the community through” what are called the four branches (note the tree symbol in the REAL logo top left): professional guest artist engagements, adult educational programming, theatrical performances, and writer’s workshops.

“This is all about connection and discovery,” Yuran explained. “The workshops give you a whole new relationship to what you are watching and experiencing.”

The first performances will feature Doug Chanselle-Hary with well-known local thespians Jay Gill, Meredith Warner, Bill Hearnberg, Bunny Goddard, Joe Garrett, Terri Ducker, and Michelle Morgan in the production of “Love Letters” at The Depot on Bradley in Carrollton on March 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. (As dates get closer, ticket information will become available.)

In April, “The Broadway Bradshaws” starring Jared Bradshaw and Lindsay Northern Bradshaw will excite audiences with four shows: “Popular Broadway Hits”, April 12th and 14th; “Disney on Broadway”, April 13th; and “The Golden Age of Hollywood”, April 14th. Jared Bradshaw is best known for his eight-year run in the Tony Award winning Broadway production Doug Chanselle-Hary of Jersey Boys. Lindsay appeared on Broadway in Wicked as Glinda for thirteen years, as well as Co-Artistic Director many television appearances, including New Amsterdam, The Americans, and CSI Miami.

Broadway veteran Cicily Daniels will be one of the guest artists participating in “Conversations with. . .” She has performed in numerous Broadway and National Tours including Rent, All Shook Up, Porgy & Bess, as well as the role of Ursula in The Little Mermaid. It’s no secret that the shepherds in the Christmas story were poor. They weren’t seen or celebrated. They were isolated and often overlooked. Yet, they were the first ones invited. They were the poor, or the ones who punched the clock.

They were the elderly, the forgotten, and the marginalized. They were not the elite, not the shot callers or star players.

They were not the kings, but instead they were the single mothers, getting no support for the kids, and working two shifts. That’s who the Father chose to invite first!

A good friend of Ms. Judy’s, (my adoptive mother) would come by my office often and ask the question, “What’s that mean?”. To me, more specifically, I will ask what’s the meaning of the season? To some, the end of year is winter. To some, the end of the year is time to put up a tree and go shopping for gifts, expensive gifts for those that they love. To others, the end of the year is a time for family, whether extended or nuclear or even a group of friends that formed a bond. To others, it is a much-needed break from school or from work. To me, when I think of that question, I think of something different.

To me, the whole reason for the season is summed up in the opening verse of the classic Christmas Carol “Joy to the World the Lord has come, Let Earth receive Her King”.

Although history has proven that Christ was not born on December 25th, nor was it during wintertime when the angels greeted the shepherds in the meadow. (Read Luke 2:8-20.)

We certainly were not troubled about the cost to our parents, our aunts, and uncles and whomever else helped buy our presents. We were just overjoyed that we had something to receive for ourselves.

What can we really do to pay it forward?

As we examine the birth of Christ and His entry into the world, notice He was inclusive of those who society did not value highly. He had angels appear to dirty shepherds. His dedication on the eighth day was in the presence of the elderly, including a widowed woman. He came through the humblest of means to ensure that all would have hope at HIS presence. He was not a respecter of persons. He was not politically aligned. He was not benefiting himself. He came to serve and to seek and save the lost.

State Senator Dugan issues strong statement against proposed new District 30 map

“This new map significantly cuts Carroll County, to the point that geographically nearly half of the county is now in another District”, said Senator Dugan

from press release District 30 State Senator Mike Dugan (R–Carrollton) released the following statement regarding the December 1st Senate vote on the proposed State Senate district maps in the form of Senate Bill 1EX: “In late October of this year U.S. District Court Judge Steve Jones determined that Georgia’s District maps drawn after the 2020 Census, which include Congressional, State Senate, and State House seats, violated the Federal Voting Rights Act of 1965. He informed the state of Georgia that these maps needed to be modified to include more majority Black districts and set a mandatory completion date of Dec. 8, 2023 to have these new maps completed. As a Senate body, we believe the original maps complied with the Act and the State have appealed his ruling. However, until the appeal process is completed, we are incumbent to comply with the ruling. To meet Judge Jones’ deadline, Governor Kemp called for a Special Session of the Georgia General Assembly to respond to the court’s demand.

Chamber of Commerce holds Annual Legislative Breakfast in Carroll EMC’s Tisinger Room The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce held their Annual Legislative Breakfast Tuesday morning, November 14, 2023 in the Carroll EMC Tisinger meeting room, Carrollton. Participating area legislators speaking to a crowd of around 85 were (above left to right) District 30 State Senator Mike Dugan, District 71 State Representative J Collins, District 72 State Representative David Huddleston, and District 18 State Representative Tyler Paul Smith.

Chamber member John Jackson moderated the hour long preview of topics the legislators believed would be addressed in the coming 2024 Legislative Session scheduled to begin January 8th. Smith, a personal injury lawyer, said that preservation of farmland would be addressed as well as tort reform remarking that “Moses gave us tort law”. Dugan said, “If we don’t do some form of tort reform, we’re going to be in a mess”. Also that “school vouchers are going to come up”. Collins said that healthcare is “a real issue on south Georgia” and that “we need to remove governmental barriers so people can get what they need” (quicker ambulance time). Collins pointed out that he voted against school vouchers last session adding, “We need to fix the schools that are broken. A school is a reflection of that community.” Collins also said, “I am a fiscal conservative. . . Georgia is the number one place to do business and we need to continue to focus on that.” Huddleston said he was one of 53 freshman representatives last session and thanked Collins for being his “mentor. . .We’re working together supporting each other.” Collins added to that sentiment saying, “We are united for our community.” Huddleston spoke on tax credits that the film industry receives for doing business here, and that it is “time to take the training wells off” - stop the tax credits.

J.P. Jones, CFO, Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame (established 11 years ago) said on November 4th, in Columbus, Georgia, they had their annual induction ceremony where they inducted 15 veterans from the State of Georgia.

Community Development Director, Ben Skipper, introduced the new Public Planner, Kim Dutton, a Central High School graduate with 20 years experience in public planning.

Skipper presented zoning request Z-23-2001 from applicant Dexter Cos LLC to rezone parcel number 131-0197 at 4 Maple Hill Road, 29.27 acres, from AG to Industrial in order to bring the headquarters of SAF, a company that provides aluminum and other metal architec-

tural products. The proposed 92,000 sq.ft. building will be used as an office and warehouse. Staff approved the request with one stipulation: if approved, the applicant must adhere to the current proposed use as an office, product fabrication, and warehouse facility as set forth in the application. Any other use in the future will have to go back before the board for approval. The representative for the applicant, in answer to questions from Commissioners, said there are 60 employees and the truck traffic will be low, going north toward I-20, and not using local roads. He said they have no plans for being annexed into Carrollton, and they will bring jobs to Carroll County because he is sure all 60 of their current employees will not be relocating.

District 4 Commissioner Steve Fuller mentioned the stream that flows to Lake Carroll where the county gets its water, and was assured their business does not put any water at all into the county sewage other than normal usage by the employees. The other side of the creek will not be disturbed in any way, and will remain as green space. Terry Jones advised the board that the Temple High School visitor side bleachers have a value greater than $10,000, and he needs board’s permission to take them out due to the new water main that has to be installed there.

He said new bleachers will be raised up higher than the old ones were, and that the old ones would cost about as much to disassemble, remove and reassemble as new ones. He asked this item to be put on the consent agenda.

Jones reviewed a new Transportation Communication System Request to replace the CB radio-type system. He said that AT&T’s First Net Service will provide service at greater distances than the current system at a first-year cost of $109,827 for hardware and cell service installation; $32,400 the second year; and third, fourth and fifth year $55,411 each; with a one year opt out at any time. This item was added to the consent agenda.

Financial Report given showing Year-toDate Revenues of $28,669,765, or 16% of Budget; Expenditures of $39,573,529, or 22% of Budge; resulting in a new Fund Balance of $18,896,563 with $4,627,334 in encumbrances.

Under Business Items, Superintendent Scott Cowart explained more about the Bay Springs Middle School project that had to be tabled due to the projected cost exceeding the expectation by almost $1,000,000 due to a water main all the way to the back of the school, along with a completely new fire alarm system. Cowart said that,even though the fire alarm system is a must, the new four-classroom addition might not be needed due to reduced to enrollment projections and the transfer of students to other schools. This would also reduce the length of the water main since the new classroom buildon was at the back of the school.

Current bid by J&R Construction is $2,466,096, with total cost $2,652,670 by add-

ing the alarm system and a shorter water main.

Item was approved unanimously by the board.

Cowart also talked about the four-classroom addition and cafeteria renovations planned for Central High School. He said the budget was $3.9 million, but the bid by J&R Construction was $4.2 million, due to the increased cost of materials. This classroom addition will be to accommodate students from Burwell, and will also free up four classrooms for Central students. The project was approved by the Board unanimously.

After executive session, board unanimously approved personnel recommendations made by the superintendent. Meeting was adjourned.

Public Works Director Danny Yates presented a proposal to award the RFP bid for the Safe Streets for All action plan to Pond & Company for the cost of $399,001.36. County was awarded a government grant for this project.

Appointment was made to Carroll County

Library Board to fill unexpired term of Nancy Mims, who has passed. Board appointed Cindy Inman to fill this position to the term of June 30, 2025.

Board then went into Executive Session, and when they returned, regular meeting was adjourned.

City of Carrollton has an existing sewer line that runs adjacent to the proposed development site.

Council member Bob Uglum asked if the city has sewer capacity for the project, since this site is not within city limits. Brooks advised that there is sewer capacity for this project. Item was approved unanimously.

City Engineer Tommy Holland detailed the UWG Aycock Drive Sanitary Sewer Improvements Phase 1 Project, advising that the project consists of replacing approximately 350 linear feet of sanitary sewer on Aycock Drive from its intersection with University Drive to Aycock Hall and Richards College of Business on the campus of the University of West Georgia.

Council voted unanimously to award the bid for this project to Compass Environmental Group at the cost of $367,124.

Holland detailed current capital projects, including the Water Treatment Plant Settling Pond, stating that project is slated to be completed next summer, and is ahead of schedule. He added that Lakeshore Park Project is almost complete with only a few items remaining to be done.

Holland also told council that the Canterbury Drive Storm Project is very close to being completed, and that the Dixie Street and Ambulance Drive portion of the 2023 Asphalt Milling and Resurfacing Project is currently underway. He said the concrete pad of the Alabama Street Trailhead Restroom Project was poured this past week.

Community Development Director Erica Studdard went over two Rezoning Requests that will be presented for a vote at the

December regular meeting.

City Manager Brooks stated that five (5) Letters of Interest for the Downtown MixedUse Development were received by the required deadline of October 25th and that final proposals are due by January 10, 2024.

Hayley Beaver reported that the city would like to apply for the GDOT Roadside Enhancement & Beautification Landscape Grant for landscaping on the western side of the Alabama Street/Hwy. 27 intersection.

Beaver added that the grant application requires an executed Resolution stating that the City of Carrollton will take over maintenance of the right-of-way should the grant be awarded.

Item was approved unanimously.

Brooks said that there are two positions on the recreation commission that expired October 1st, and said that city staff have recommended reappointment of Chasty Smith, and the new appointment of Ken Nesbitt. All terms would expire October 1, 2026.

Brooks also advised that there are five positions on the Downtown Carrollton (Main Street) Advisory Board that have terms expiring November 30th. He stated that the Board has recommended reappointment of Kelly Houck and Kelsie Burge to new terms, and has also recommended appointments of Tony Tritt of Tritt Realty, Mallory Evans with Brown Dog Eatery, and Carla Cosper of Atlanta West Jewelry. All terms would expire November 30, 2025.

Brooks presented a tentative schedule for all Mayor and Council work sessions and regular meetings for the 2024 calendar year, and said after it is voted on, this calendar will be distributed to the press, posted on site at City Hall and to the City’s website.

Brooks also detailed last month’s operations report.

2024: The Year of Loving Thy Neighbor?

Merry Christmas! I do hope it is a rewarding and fulfilling one for you, despite any troubles that you may have had to endure this year. We all know the one proven cure for sorrow, depression, or sadness: get up, get out, and help someone who is also experiencing EDITOR/ sorrow, depression, or sadness.

PUBLISHER Jesus the Christ challenged us to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. He instructed us to do this knowing just how hard that really is - to love another as much as we love ourselves, to the same degree, as fully as we love ourselves, with the same compassion, the same forgiveness, and with the same wishes for good things to happen.

He did not say to only love those neighbors who live like you, look like you, sound like you, or believe like you. He offered no qualifiers or intensifiers on “neighbor”. Our neighbors are all the others. Nearby AND not nearby. Over there AND out there.

All are sinners. Not all of our neighbors are believers. Love your neighbor. Have compassion for the sinner. Humility for the believer. Can we make 2024 the “Year for Loving Thy Neighbor’?

We can fix our broken politics

HAMILTON PROFESSOR Indiana University Center on Representative Government Americans are fed up with politics. That’s the obvious conclusion of a recent survey by the Pew Research Center, which found many of us have “unrelentingly negative” views of politics and elected officials.

It’s understandable that people are discouraged. There are plenty of reasons to feel that way. I’m not especially alarmed at the findings of the survey, however. The key thing is that we maintain an interest in improving our broken politics. That’s critically important.

If the American people were to get so turned off by politics that they refuse to participate, that would be a real problem for our democracy. Fortunately, there’s evidence that we haven’t reached that point.

Dissatisfaction with politics crosses political, social and demographic lines, according to the Pew survey. It is shared by White, Black, Asian and Hispanic adults. It affects old people as well as young people.

Nearly nine out of 10 Americans say politicians are more focused on fighting each other than on solving problems. Some 28% distrust both major parties, the highest figure in nearly 30 years. It’s common to hear people say that neither party cares about ordinary people.

Americans distrust the executive and legislative branches of government, and a majority have a dim view of the Supreme Court.

Americans are rightly suspicious of the growing role that money plays in politics.

About 85% said that the cost of election campaigns keeps good candidates from running and that special interests have too much influence on politicians. Only about a quarter of the people rate the quality of political candidates as very or somewhat good, down 20 percentage points in the past five years.

You might expect this distrust and discouragement would cause Americans to

disengage from politics. Fortunately, that doesn’t seem to be happening.

The elections of 2018, 2020 and 2022 featured some of the highest voter turnout rates in decades. About two-thirds of eligible adults voted in 2020, the highest rate for a national election since 1900. Those are very encouraging signs.

And the public has ideas for improving our politics. In the Pew survey, majorities favored limits on campaign contributions and spending.

The survey found broad support for term limits on members of Congress and for age limits on elected and appointed officials, including Supreme Court justices. Elections this month in Kentucky, Ohio and Virginia drew strong interest and participation. In another hopeful sign, more young people have been running for office – and often winning.

We Americans have always been an optimistic and forward-looking people, confident in our ability to solve problems and make progress. We’re right to be unhappy with the condition of our politics, but we have the power and the ability to make our politics better.

The practice it takes to do that right allows them to get to know each other.

Seeing the eagles now recalls a run-in I had with a young Bald Eagle, Christmas week 6 years ago. I was sitting at my desk, just as now, when I became aware of a thrashing on the porch. Assuming it was a squirrel making a racket as squirrels will do, I suddenly realized that what I thought was a bobbing tail was actually the tips of dappled feathers.

Going out to investigate, imagine my astonishment to find a large white-and-brown raptor clinging to the inside of the chicken wire that

wraps around the edge of the deck from one end to the other. Glyn laid that wire between the railing and floor in the 1970s, hoping to prevent children from falling off the porch into the floodplain below. Ten years ago, I secured the bottom of the wire to the floor with rope after my puppy Shine slid under it and fell 20 feet. Fortunately he landed like a cat: on his feet.

Now this poor bird’s talons were caught in the wire. She struggled and broke loose, only to get captured by the confounding barrier again. I use the female pronoun here as the eaglet was so big I suspected she was female; female raptors are generally larger than the males. But more importantly, how on earth did she get on my porch?

Despite her impressive size and ferocious beak and talons, I guessed from her mottled feathers that she was a juvenile, finding herself like any teenager might, in a predicament for which there was no precedent. That morning I had put out on the deck clothesline a silver hood with faux fur trim from a new winter coat. Had this inexperienced predator mistaken

my fashion statement for her lunch?

The chicken wire had to be a confusing barrier. What in her life would have prepared her for it? Was it possible her eyes weren’t even outfitted to perceive the thin hexagonal wire?

Yet it was there anyway, invisible to her perhaps, but real enough to tangle up her feet and keep her from flying off the porch.

How could I help her? I thought maybe if she had more room behind her, she could make a running leap and fly over the railing. I wanted to ask why didn’t she just hop up on the rail and sail away? Was I giving her too much credit for problem-solving? I felt as desperate as her, terrified she might die in front of me from the stress of being trapped.

Aware that this was a wild animal capable of tearing my flesh, I came back out armed with a broom, pushing the furniture away to give her more space for liftoff. My effort was futile. She flew again into the wire, then attacked it with her talons and got stuck upside down, her wings hanging useless.

for us to revisit an old story. One which you have surely heard of before. In fact, I would dare say you have heard it a hundred times or more. Yes, I want to talk about the Christmas story. But my hope is that you hear the story in a little different light this time. Today, I want to show you how the story of Christmas is openly, and unapologetically a pro-life miracle. So, without further ado, go with me and let’s travel back in time, some 2000+ years!

The year is 1 B.C…. Gabriel, an angel of the Lord, is sent from the very presence of God to a small, rural town called Nazareth. There, he finds a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name is Mary. Luke 1: 28-32 KJV: “And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed are thou among women And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favour with God And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy

womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS He shalt be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David And he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there shall be no end” Here we have the scene…. Mary is a young, unmarried, marginalized girl who is ill-prepared to be a mother. I can’t imagine the thoughts now going through her young mind: What would her parents think? Would they understand? Would they be supportive? And what about her fiancé? Would he believe her, or would he think she was unfaithful? Would he even stay with her?

She is scared. And let’s be honest, we would be asking the same questions and our minds….

And we do today…when the troubles and “headwinds of life” slap us right in the face, we have internal dialog with ourselves with the “what ifs” on how to handle the situations we are now faced with!

There is a good chance the stigma of being

pregnant out of wedlock would follow Mary her entire life. And in the ancient Middle East, that is no small stigma! If Mary chooses to have this baby, there is a very real chance she will lose her family, her friends, her community, and the man she loves. Kissing her child will mean kissing the future she has dreamed of goodbye. And what kind of future could that child have anyway? Surely not an easy one.

She could not afford to give him a good life.

And no doubt the scandal of all this would plague him through adulthood.

What decision will Mary choose to do?

Luke 1: 38: “And Mary said, behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her” And miraculously, in what can only be described as the most unplanned pregnancy in history, Mary chooses life for her baby, our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus.

It is hard to miss the overtly pro-life message here. While some of the details are certainly unique, Mary’s situation is not unfamiliar. Every day in America and across the world, See DUANE HACK page 28

Americans have long had a healthy skepticism about political power and those who wield it, but the Pew survey suggests distrust has reached new heights. Some 65% of those questioned said thinking about politics left them exhausted. More than half said it made them angry. Only a few said it made them hopeful or excited.

Asked to describe U.S. politics in one word, many came up with “divisive,” “corrupt” or “chaotic.” Asked to identify the strong points of our politics, more than half couldn’t come up with anything.

It’s obvious that our politics are going through a difficult time. Congress seems dysfunctional, struggling to pass spending bills to keep the government operating. A single senator has blocked promotions for hundreds of military officers. Election campaigns are filled with personal attacks. Divisions threaten our support for allies, including Ukraine, a rejection of the adage that politics stops at the water’s edge.

Why should I forgive?

I used to think that if I did not forgive a person that I was hurting them. I have since learned that when I hold unforgiveness in my heart, that I am hurting myself both spiritually and physically.

I would try to pray about things, but I received no results. This was because I was holding unforgiveness or “aught” in my heart.

Only after I repented to my Heavenly Father first, and then to the person that I was angry with, did I see my prayers prevail. And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him and let it drop (leave it, let it go), in order that your Father who is in heaven may also forgive you your [own] failings and shortcomings and let them drop

(Mark 11:25).

Everyone has experienced some sort of hurt or pain, and it takes God to show you how to release those hurts unto Him. And though He knows everything about us, He still wants us to tell Him of everything that causes us pain, shame, and despair. After we tell Him, He then shows us how to let things go forever; just as He does. God says, “For I will be merciful and gracious toward their sins and I will remember their deeds of unrighteousness no more” (Hebrews 8: 12). Did you know that holding a grudge can harm you physically? You can develop headaches, high blood pressure, and other diseases if you don’t let bygones be bygones. “The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?” (Proverbs 18:14) A recent nationwide survey revealed that 97% of doctors believe that emotions can

affect the body’s ability to fight disease. Heart rates and blood pressures were 2 1/2 times lower when participants forgave than when they held grudges. Holding a grudge also made them sweat, a sign that their nervous systems were on high alert. Forgiveness left them feeling calm and in control. “Participants felt significantly more negative, angry, and sad during the unforgiving condition than during the forgiving condition,’’ said Charlotte Vanoyen Witvliet, PhD, assistant professor of psychology at the college (Psychological Science, Mar 2001). The wonderful news is that you don’t have to remain in a state of unforgiveness. God sent his son Jesus Christ to the earth to take our sins for us and to show us how to walk in forgiveness. He is such a loving God because He not See TRACEY PITTS page 28

future generations. Unfortunately, many alumni do not remain connected to our independent schools upon graduation. We tend to drift apart as the students move out of state for university studies, follow their desired career paths, and establish families of their own.

Upon reconnection, usually years later, emails and phone calls are made, and a financial request occurs. “We only hear from you when you need money...” It’s a sentiment often heard from alumni who feel disconnected from their alma mater. While financial contributions are a part of why schools commit resources to engaging alumni, it is certainly not the only reason.

Having an engaged alumni base is critical for the long-term success of a school. Why?

Because successful alumni who are wellconnected within the school community often serve as mentors for students, act as ambassadors in the greater community, and provide current students with educational opportunities through their well-established career pathway. They become big brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, grandparents and cousins to our current students - forever bonded through their fraternal connection to our mission and vision. They share their finetuned talents and gifts acquired through their years in our schools with the community, while simultaneously serving as an ambassador for their alma mater. Alumni become the “go to” individuals for career days, job fairs, college recommendation letters, and internship mentors.

My cousin Harriet - and her father Gus’ not so wonderful life the baby half-blind. Holding the broom as a shield, I pushed up the wire and made an opening. Time was growing short. Raptors’ eyes are inscrutable, but in hers I could read bafflement, fear, and most concerning, weariness.

I’d seen that when I put the ladder against the railing, it nudged her further down the porch away from it. So, I went back below the deck and pushed the ladder across the rail in the direction of the new hole. The bird wrangled her talons out of the wire and hopped along the edge of the porch until I could no longer see her.

Whoosh! With a tremendously satisfying rush, the eaglet found the opening and flew out. Settling on a branch about ten feet from the cabin, she sat, feathers askew as if she was asking herself what the heck just happened? After a while she took off blithely over the Chattahoochee, a free bird once more.

“Merry Christmas,” I quavered after her. I wanted to say, “What, no good-bye? No grateful look back or dropped feather?”

But, isn’t that the true nature of giving? To offer with no thought of reward. The reward, I decided, was that both of us had survived.

The eaglet recovered far faster than I did.

Drenched in adrenaline, I trembled for the rest of the day.

Since then, I’ve read that raptors begin to mate at about 4 years old. And so 6 years later, when I heard that eagle singing sweetly to her partner, I couldn’t help wonder if perhaps I’d played a long-forgotten part in their wild pairing.

And, there was other baggage that had followed Uncle Gus. Our parents, particularly the males, would refer to him by that word, but only when he was not present. And, we children understood to never call him that, even when he wasn’t around. It would seem that only those who shared their childhood with him had that privilege! I don’t know why he was nicknamed that, but surely it became his “baggage”. And, just maybe... it, too, had become the baggage of those childhood friends, the ones who used the nickname!

Here’s what I mean: There is no doubt that what happened at Harriet’s birth and the desperation that followed, all during a the worst Depression, had its effects on uncle Gus’ relatives and friends. But why did those friends and relatives use that derogatory name whenever that tragic story was brought up? “Can you blame the Pest? He had a newborn baby on his hands and no one could help!...” “...he left the dinner table, drunk, and went up on the roof of our apartment building, and then the Pest started screaming and cried to God, and all the world could hear him. ‘Why? Why me?’ “... no one could help the Pest. That’s how it was.”

After a lifetime of hearing these stories, I’ve begun to wonder about the use of such a negative reference. Here was a childhood friend, a relative, and a year after he married a terrible thing happened to his life - and you still refer to him as “the Pest”? It’s one thing for a bunch of kids to nickname one of their own. But later, in midlife, to use that nickname in order for your sense-of-self to be comfortable in an impossible situation, to squeeze past your own inabilities...all that, just to hide behind one’s own crippled sense of compassion? ...Well, it’s only my opinion, but that’s how I interpret those details. In all fairness to my “uncles” who used that word, there was definitely a nostalgic “tone” whenever they used it while referring to the tragedy, as if to say, “...we miss our old Pest”.

On the occasion of Harriet’s death, I’m looking at it all differently. I now see the possibility of unforeseen results for the very perpetrators of a negative nickname. This seems to take the old saying that starts with “Sticks and stones may break my bones...” and adds “ ...BUT names can also harm YOU.” And finally, there is a memory that sister Aphro shared with me, just last week.

One night, just a couple of days after Harriet had been born, my family were on their way home, driving from Manhattan to Brooklyn. Soon after they had got on the Manhattan Bridge, a lone figure appeared, beyond the pedestrian walkway, with the East River 100 ft. below. It was mama’s cousin Gus. Papa stopped, got out and made his way to Gus and convinced him to come home with them, where they gave him enough drink for him to sleep.

Of course, Mary had some idea that her baby was special. But she was not the only one.

Shepherds, prompted by a host of angels, visited Jesus the very night of his birth. And wise men, astrologers from the East guided by a star, traveled hundreds of miles to pay him homage. Though he was just an infant born to a poor couple from a backwater town, seemingly insignificant in every obvious way, they all recognized in him extraordinary value and worth. That, in essence, is the anthem of the pro-life movement: We recognize that every person, no matter how seemingly insignificant, is of value and worth, from conception to natural death.

This is the new battle cry for the Pro-Life Movement I have been writing about for over a year now: Proclaiming Personhood for the unborn and the aged.

That is a principle not shared by every member of this story. There is one character who does not recognize the value and worth of this newborn king. To him, this child poses a risk to his way of life. You are not only the bigger person if you forgive, but you will also be the better person (health wise), too.

If he chooses to support Mary and her baby, everything will be different. Many men today face this same dilemma. And sadly, many take the route of Herod. When faced with the opportunity to take responsibility, they instead pressure the mother into forfeiting the life of their child.

Herod uses soldiers; they use doctors. But, not Joseph. Even though the baby is not his biologically, he takes responsibility for him.

Even though the culture says he has every right to walk away, he stands by Mary. Not joining in with the selfish ambition of Herod, Joseph

gives us an image of manhood worth striving towards. Joseph is a reminder that real men honor women and defend children.

So, regardless of who you identify with most in this Christmas narrative, remember that this season is not just about colorful lights, warm cocoa on a cold night, burning wood in the fireplace, presents around a tree or times or

fellowship with family and friends. Nor is it about yule logs, Christmas carols, or mistletoe.

If your children are grown and your mortgage is paid off, do you still need to carry life insurance? It depends on your situation, but for many people, a cash-value life insurance policy, such as whole life or universal life, can be a valuable, tax-efficient source of retirement income.

And by drawing on the cash value of your policy, you might be able to temporarily reduce the amount you take out from your retirement accounts, such as your IRA and 401(k). This ability could be especially important when the financial markets are down — you’d probably like to avoid

liquidating your assets when their prices have dropped. Basically, you can use the cash in your policy in these ways: Withdrawals – You can typically withdraw part of the cash value of your life insurance without losing coverage. You generally won’t incur income taxes on these withdrawals, up to the amount you’ve put into the policy — that is, the premiums you’ve paid. Once your withdrawals exceed this amount, you would generally owe taxes. Also, keep in mind that any withdrawals will reduce your policy’s death benefit and the available cash surrender value.

Policy loans – Rather than taking a withdrawal from your policy, you could take out a loan. You won’t have to go through an approval process or income verification, and policy loans typically have lower interest rates than bank loans and don’t assess closing costs. Plus, because your insurer will be

lending you the money and using the cash in your policy as collateral, your policy’s cash value can remain intact and still potentially grow. However, policy loans do carry some issues of which you should be aware. For one thing, while a loan usually isn’t taxable, you could end up owing taxes on any unpaid loan balance, including interest. And if this balance exceeds the policy’s cash value, it could cause your policy to lapse. Also, outstanding loans can reduce your death benefit.

Cashing out – If you cash out, or “surrender,” your policy, you can receive the entire cash value, plus any accrued interest.

You will have to subtract any money needed to pay policy loans, along with unpaid premiums and surrender fees, which can be significant. Also, any amount you receive over the policy’s cash basis — the total of premiums you’ve paid — will be taxed as regular income.

A background check is still required in order to purchase weapon - and the applicant must pass the background check - but a permit to carry is now longer required.

Historically during this process, existing District lines are often adjusted. Typically, these adjustments are minimal, although this was not the case with the 30th State Senate District.

Upon this realization, I made the decision vote ‘no’ on the passage of Senate Bill 1EX, which would have adjusted the composition of my district far more than I believe it should have been.

“I have been honored to serve the good people of the 30th since 2013. From 2013 until 2021 my district included Carroll, parts of Douglas, and parts of Paulding Counties. As a result of the last redistricting process, I was also proud to include Haralson County in that list.

This new map significantly cuts Carroll County, to the point that geographically nearly half of the county is now in another District.

People I have known all of my life and have served for a decade are no longer in my area.
