THESE BOOTS WERE MADE FOR WINTERING
Words Mia McCarthy
WE CAN DENY it no longer - winter is here. For the lucky residents of the balmy Dolphin Coast, that means breaking out the down-padded jackets as soon as the weather threatens to dip below twenty degrees. For those of us who are at the cold mercy of the Benguela current, our efforts to shield our bodies and our homes against the onslaught of icy rain and howling wind require a little more strain.
No matter which coast you’re welcoming winter to, one thing is essential: a good pair of boots. And, if you read our article on South African millinery in the last issue of Life & Style, every inch of you will be stylishly clothed for winter from head to toe.
These local designers and shoemakers offer some insight into the astounding sartorial talent that South Africa has to offer. Whether your feet are likely to be traipsing through urban landscapes, hiking the frosty Midlands, or stomping the runway at New York Fashion Week, you’re bound to find a match fit to make Cinderella jealous in our winter guide to shoes.
Sindiso Khumalo X Vans
In March of 2022, South African fashion designer Sindiso Khumalo was one of four talented creatives hand-picked by curator Sarah Andelman to present a collection of limited edition footwear and apparel for Vault by Vans. Khumalo’s modern designs are inspired by her Zulu and Ndebele heritage, a cultural endowment that she also brings to her Vans collaboration. Sneakerheads might struggle to find the

Groundcover
Anyone who has ever embarked on a lazy Midlands Meander may have been lucky enough to stumble on the quaint Groundcover workshop in Curry’s Post. Groundcover Leather Company is a family business founded in 1990 by Justin and Amanda McCarthy as an expression of “a lifelong passion for leatherwork and a search for a meaningful livelihood”. These boots were made for working, and that’s exactly what they’ll do.
The shoemakers may have had humble beginnings, but Groundcover has since grown into a significant enterprise with multiple stores across the country, including Ballito, Hillcrest, and Clarens. Here, they sell a wide range of original and finely-crafted leather goods handmade by skilled artisans whose depth of skill you’d be hardpressed to match.
To buy a pair of Groundcover boots is to buy a pair of well-made shoes that will last you a lifetime. Whether you’re in the market for a classic pair of vellies to trudge the wintery Midlands in or some stylish combat boots to beat the frosty pavements of the inner city, Groundcover is the local one-stop-shop you didn’t know you were looking for.
Sindiso Khumalo x Vans collaboration still on the shelves, but it’s worth keeping up with Khumalo as a formidable talent in the fashion world. Not only was she a joint winner of the LVMH prize in 2020, but she presented her SS21 range at Milan Fashion Week. Khumalo has also spoken on sustainability at the United Nations and the European Development Forum.
Khumalo is interested in exploring black African experiences and representations of black women throughout history through the medium of textiles. By literally weaving history into modern, sustainably-crafted clothes, she is inviting a new gaze on African storiesand we can’t look away.
Palladium Boots
From runways to…runways? The iconic Palladium boot has its unexpected origins in the field of aviation, though you’re much more likely to see Palladium on the ground than in the air these days. Back when Palladium was established in 1920, the company was producing aircraft tyres during World War II. But, when demand for tyres fell after the end of the war, the company leveraged its industry experience and manufacturing techniques to make footwear instead. Thus, in 1947, the Pampa boot was born. Palladium’s first boot was designed specifically for the French Foreign Legion, which was serving in the hot and arid northern African desert. The soldiers needed footwear that would provide ample support while allowing their feet to breathe - so, Palladium made a canvas boot with rubber soles.
Thebe Magugu
World-renowned luxury fashion brand Thebe Magugu has released a limited edition Sunday Best boot. Although it’s only available for a limited time, we couldn’t resist including the breathtaking shoe in our roundup of winter footwear.
The Sunday Best boot (available as an ankle boot and a knee boot) resembles a loafer with a severely pointed toe, taking inspiration from the elongated shoes typically worn by pastors in downtown Johannesburg. The pointed toe also references the Cracow shoe, which enjoyed peak popularity in 15th century Europe.

Magugu is yet another young South African designer to watch. Like Khumalo, Magugu draws on Africa’s “storied past, complex present and exciting imagined futures” to inform exquisite capsule collections, the likes of which are regularly seen adorned by celebrated artists. Some of the artists that have been clothed in Magugu’s designs include Nigerian singer Burna Boy, Bridgerton’s Golda Rosheuvel, Thor: Love and Thunder’s Tessa Thompson, and Kate Walsh of Grey’s Anatomy fame.
The materials and the silhouette of the early Pampa boot have stood the test of time, as they are still in demand today. The rich history of the brand certainly adds to the allure. It’s clear that the Palladium boot is up for anything, so we recommend pairing the more modern stonewashed canvas and lightweight rubber-soled model with a pair of sweatpants or jeans for an urban adventure.

Whether you’re looking to step out in style or equip your toes for rugged terrain, Life & Style’s fashion insights are here to fit you out with the perfect shoe - and some fascinating background to boot.
