Sustainable Urban Landscape For the second semester of the Sustainable Urban Design master’s program a diverse group of students at Lund University’s School of Architecture continued their educational journey in the advanced course ‘Sustainable Urban Landscape’ (ASBN16) and its complementary theory course ‘Urban Landscape - Theory and Methods’ (ASBN11).

The course of Sustainable Urban Landscape deals with urban design through a greater perspective – the urban landscape. The spring design project begins with the students understanding of cities as a part of the larger landscapes. They are no longer approached as isolated urbanities, but are analyzed and approached from a regional perspective and put into a greater contextual setting.

The course focuses on design adhering to the cultural landscape contexts. The aim is to create a balance between the human and ecological systems. How can cities develop in relation to their setting in the landscape? Can that landscape become a driver for sustainability strategies, and generate new ideas for living in synergy with the natural environment?

The design studio resulted in 30 unique projects in which students challenged conventional notions of sustainability and proposed new structures preparing for and supporting the process of urban transformation in Ängelholm municipality at the two different sites.

During the site visit a broader study of the city outskirts and bordering villages was needed in order to develop the students’ perspective of the region and the influence of local landscape elements, architecture and ecology. The students met and involved into discussion with two distinct entrepreneurs - Vejby Vingård and Engelholmglass. Learning about the manufacturing processes, collaboration with local farmers and significance of the productive landscape for everyday life were necessary for the students’ future proposals.

Ängelholm, Sweden The design studio Sustainable Urban Landscape focused on two possible design sites located in the small city of Ängelholm: Kronoskogen and Barkåkra. In the light of the Öresund NW growth, Ängelholm municipality has started to reconsider the current city layout and has recognized the urging need for guiding framework plans. In response to that need, our students have been asked to come up with new strategies and propose visions for how to think when planning the expansion and densification of both fabric and everyday life in Ängelholm.

Kronoskogen To the west of the city centre, in the 1700’s these sand fields and dunes were planted with trees as a precaution against flying sands that used to reach the city center. Today the fully grown forest has become a natural asset but also suffers from inaccessibility, bad drainage and lack of program. Could sensitive planning transform Kronoskogen from a production forest into a showcase for sustainable urban design , in balance and synergy with the man-

The site borders the Valhall Business Park containing many entrepreneurial companies and is located just next to the Ă„ngelholm-Helsinborg airport. Thus, the area is expected to undertake urban development in near future. The specific setting of the landscape - between stone beach and agricultural plains - ought to be a vital part of the urban strategy in order to preserve the authenticity and biodiversity of the area. This raises questions of how economical, sociocultural and ecological factors can be intertwined with urbanism in a conscious way?

The initial design task this year was to develop a strategy for how and where Öresund NW region will grow. The work started with a study trip to the area in order to get an understanding of the landscape and its history. After working in groups to form strategies for the region’s future development, the students zoomed in to the municipality of Ängelholm, which is expected to grow in the future around the train stations.

Critical questions asked were: Where and how can the Öresund NW region grow? How can a region better manage its resources through site specific urban development? How can a local place and its landscape characteristics play a critical role in sustainable regional development?

The aim of the final Individual phase of the Design Project is to tell a holistic story and design a sensitive, detailed plan for development of the chosen design site of either Kronoskogen or Barkåkra.

The constraints and potentials that were identified in the previous stages of analysis and strategy are now to be turned into physical spaces, bound by real dimensions and sitespecific performances. Thus, the students’ visions for Ängelholm’s urban transformation naturally came to be concrete proposals as a result of the extensive research base from which they could be pulled up.

The reader of this booklet is invited to enduldge into the following pages in order to witness a brief collection of the final projects. It is our hope that all of the students tireless efforts

In my proposal, I tried to present a balanced approach to design in harmony with nature. In the analyze I focused mostly on housing types of residences in Ängelholm, and how they commute daily. The fundings were really surprising because I discovered that most of the people live in villas and they travel by car.

Looking on that the strategy of my proposal is about breaking with the habit of commuting mostly by car and give residents the opportunity to travel more, by using public transport.

The second pillar of the strategy is, to provide more housing apartments in blocks. It unites people more and creates social communities.

The other strategies are: shaping social life and densifying, wich both assumes to supplement other parts of the proposal. The vision of the project focuses on satisfying the needs of city residents, which I found, are currently

the missing elements. The proposal assumes, first of all, increasing the number of population and density in the design area, focusing primarily on creating various options for apartment blocks.

In addition, the project also focuses on expanding public transport lines, by adding more connections and bus stops. Moreover the project strategy assumes to make new job spaces with the possibility of close residence, which promotes a sustainable living lifestyle and more car-free zone. Besides that my proposal promotes the vibrant lifestyle by creating new, social tissues, bringing up new urban flows of the private, semiprivate, and public zones of the site.

Ängelholm is a well-connected town with a lot of potentials, both coming from its geographical position and its landscape characteristics. A sense of identity for the area could be found in a lifestyle in connection with nature.

The model proposed is based on coliving as a sustainable and flexible solution: sharing space and resources can reduce the impact on site, as well as improving social sustainability through interaction. The development can also bridge the gap between the city and the seaside and create a sense of direction while framing the forest.

The dwellings can range between different kinds to adapt to the lifestyle and economic possibilities while providing for different needs for privacy.

The same concept applies to outdoor spaces, varying from private areas that can be appropriated by residents to the open and public landscape. The typologies can be organized in nuclei

that share local facilities and then combine in bigger clusters.

The development starts in the station area, with an improvement of connections and the introduction of a commercial and business hub to attract people on site. It then proceeds with further phases, characterized by a decreasing density and stronger interaction with the landscape.

Through these interventions, Ängelholm could strengthen its identity as a well-connected city immersed in a beautiful natural landscape and become attractive for a wide range of people, both to visit and move to.

The vision of Barkåkra - The Contributing Lifestyle is focusing on the existing natural uniqueness and characteristics of Barkåkra, teaching the power and importance of the nature, and what it brings into an everyday human life.

What makes Ängelholm’s identity is its unique sequence of very different landscapes across the city but also across the region. Several challenges such as connecting the city to the forest, creating a diverse and inclusive urban community and offer recreational and productive facilities have to be solved. This project aims at drawing a spine that connects the regional paths and promotes soft mobility. Since Ängelholm likes to be called the city by the sea, this spine guides its inhabitants from the city to the sea by meeting other landscapes such as the stream, the railway, the forest and the dunes with a wooden pathway with recreational sheds along it.

Vision The edible landscapes of Barkåkra, is a transformation project, focusing on developing the existing qualities of the site with a collaborative, sustainable mindset for the local community.

Main aim The aim of the project is to contribute using public participation processes towards a sustainable urban landscape.

A variety of building typologies and inclusive meeting places will be developed. Better mobility will connect Barkåkra and facilitate for pedestriansand cyclists.

By developing the existing infrastructure and the connections between, the different key points and recreational areas will be more accessible for pedestrians- and cyclist.

This can have a positive impact on the public health of the local community and people that want to visit

Collaboration between different stakeholders and public participation can develop the local industry in Barkåkra in a more circular and sustainable way. By sharing more of the farmland and collaborating with farmers and different businesses in Valhall Park and the upcoming Valhall Collaborative, the local businesses can help each other to improve agricultural self-suffiency where the result of the food you planted, harvested & ate, can end up as organic waste and then fertilized soil that can be used over again.

Developing the existing green structures with public participation processes can benefit the feeling of belonging to Barkåkra and make the local community feel ownership and responsible of their surroundings and each other.

When the coronavirus pandemic hit Europe, I got thinking about how vulnerable our society is. External threats like conflicts and disease are dangers in themselves, but there is also a risk that they destroy the complex supply chains we’re all dependent on. In Sweden, around half the food consumption is imported. Important resources for the industrial agricultural business, like fertilizer and chemicals are also produced outside of the country. At the same time, most of us lead a high carbon life, further increasing dependency on working foreign trade.

In Food for the Future, Ängelholm is turned into a pilot resilient community, designed to work well even when supplies from the outside run dry. At the same time, the development should give opportunities for a good lifestyle. To be truly resilient to outside threats, the community needs to be self-sufficient in food. In the semi-rural settings around Ängelholm, Sweden’s prime potato

country, this is achievable. The municipality has capacity to feed somewhere around twice its current population.

This project constitutes of two main parts. The key typology is the Permaculture community. This is a small village, made up of permaculture farms. There is enough land around to support the families and provide a small surplus.

The farms are individual, but resources and some buildings are shared between these households.

The Village Centre is the second main part. This is where people meet, trade, go to work and take the train. Refineries for the produce are located here: a mill, a slaughterhouse, a dairy. There are spots for smaller businesses as well, bakeries, offices and small manufacturing workshops. The village dwellers have some gardening space nearby or on their back yard, but these households depend on parts of their food coming from the rest of the municipality.

EARLY MIDDLE-AGES: SOLSKIFTET

Ängelholm’s built landscape today is a palimpsest of historical settlement patterns. Strong former agricultural villages can be credited to high quality soils, which today remain one of the region’s biggest assets. This makes development at the urban periphery complex and precarious.

Tätskiftet is a long-term solution for sustainable development in Ängelholm Municipality. It is a ground-up and incremental approach that utilizes the open land on existing development sites, responding to historical and contemporary forms of settlement. The implementation of “gentle density” through infill is conscientious of the slow, pastoral lifestyle appreciated by residents and visitors, while providing much needed housing, services, and job space in the neighbourhoods that people already know and love without undue impact on precious remaining greenfield land.

Taking inspiration from early solskift homesteads, the proposal seeks a more equitable relationship to the land.

Resources — particularly land — are shared, and developments are highly integrated, with a focus-shift toward common spaces, rather than private assets. Tätskiftet, like Ängelholm’s preindustrial settlements, is permacultural by design.

Tätskiftet is never finished. It should be regularly revisited and re-evaluated over time and is nimble when responding to new trends and demands, creating a layered pattern of development that will mark its own moments in the historical record.

The world is facing unprecent challenges that affect the sustainability of our food and agriculture systems. We need to increase the pace of innovation to overcome the challenges of the 21st century - with Agriculture Innovation.

This means, let the people learn more about agriculture and a self-sufficient urban lifestyle.

The strategy is to produce food that can be re-used along the year without any sort of importation for other countries as well as reducing the global CO2 emission with strategically placing housing neighborhoods around the landscape. Statistics show 70 per cent of food is imported in Sweden, so the goal is to decrease the numbers for the country be self-sustainable.

The houses are replaced by social clusters integrated in the surrounding natural landscape. The majority of the land is shared among the residents allowing the food production fully

integrated between the building. By integrating residential and mix used development, decentralized energy production and local organic food production, the concept strive to offer the ability to learn about selfsustainable way of living for the future.

The different typologies used in the project garantee the maxinum value for the landscape and the farmlands.

Creating an environment that enables innovation in agriculture. Accelerating and scaling up innovation in agriculture can trigger the transformation needed to respond to feeding a growing and increasingly urbanized population, climate change impacts and to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals!

Angelholm is a city with major opportunities to create many ways of innovate living environments, for the future, with always understand and learn what is living with the landscape by integrating landscape elements inside our homes.

The purpose of the project is to increase the attractiveness of this beach and forest to people in different seasons.

Different types of people can find things of interest here.

The two main issues I solved were: -First, the land near the train station is not well utilized and vacant; -Second, most areas in the forest are not developed and there are no diverse facilities to meet people’s needs, and people cannot use it more in different seasons.

Forests must be the driving force for attracting and promoting the development of this region. Therefore, a variety of views are added here and the original building is updated.

Places that add cultural and educational functions near train stations, such as green house and urban agriculture areas.

Create an ecological community and set up some open spaces, semi-open spaces and private spaces also provide different ways for people to communicate. For example, set up barbecue open spaces that can provide meals for multiple people, wooden pavilions for people to rest, and green gallery.

The forest will also have wetland park, platform and exercise pathways. This provides more opportunities for people to stay close to feel nature. Such as picking mushrooms, observing birds, etc. High view platform provides opportunities for people to appreciate nature from a height.

What’s more, there will be more wooden platforms and some dune fences in beach. People can use the platform to rest, communicate or take a walk.

What makes Ängelholm special is the city’s unique landscape features: the long coast, the serene forest Kronoskogen and the meandering stream Rönne. Out of these landscape features it is only the stream that’s an integrated part of the built environment. Neither the coast nor the forest is connected to the city fabric in the same way, much due to the railway cutting the city in two parts.

Sustainable Urban Landscape

The aim of the project is to connect the city with Kronoskogen and the coast with landscape as the stepping stone.

The gardens are the core of the project and it’s here where the residents can cultivate, relax and hang out. The ecological driving force of the gardensis to use as multifunctional solutions as possible. From the permeable ground cover and vegetation beds surrounding the buildings to green roofs and floodable swales every arrangement aims to have multiple functions; handling storm water, creating habitats and contributing to a

larger understanding and appreciation of the local environment. The gardens and community greenhouses enable a sustainable small-scale food production that reconnects the people with their food sources and introduces an activity with the ability to connect people.

At the end of the day you will not only discover a place that strives to be attractive for people, plants and animals but also a place with a rurban character that works as a link between the best of Ängelholm’s urban qualities and unique landscape features.

By analysing the landscape of the region, one realizes the strong occupation of agricultural activity by the phenomenal amount of fields, which will completely structure the landscape. With the predominance of fields, we will see several scenes appear across the landscape like lakes, forest areas that encourage outdoor activity.

Our reflection therefore, focused on the ability to connect these spaces with each other without destroying the existing landscape. We dug the landscape to extract its skeleton. That’s when we looked at the boundaries of those fields and the watershed.

In our regional strategy we come to use the existing borders of the fields to respect the character of the landscape and thus allow numerous connections between different activities.

During my site study my reflection is more focused on the relationship between rural and urban.

As in the majority of cities and villages, a disparity in them can be analysed, whether for accessibility to the city centre, social exchange or accessibility to local products. A small number of large companies located in this city take up local activities. In my project I would like to amplify this relationship but at the level of the population because for the majority, the fields and farms is only a plant without interest.

By helping me with several activities and natural areas already on the site, like a market garden, a sports center, a transport infrastructure as well as a bio hotspot. If we allow the person living in the city to be captivated by their countryside and their territory this will generate in time more and more exchange between these two places.

So the creation of new traffic like bike lanes, new line and bus station more consequent. Maybe see also changing diet mentality.

The site Barkara sits in a public transport node that nowadays showing increasingly transportation flow, which offers a great opportunity in local industry.However, it lacks of sort of “inner-connection” that link the community due to the missing of pedestrian walkways and the connection between the landscape and the settlement, there is a need to retreat a new district that promote the connection both between the local community and between the local and the tourists. In this term, “connecting” is extremely important, it is the key to bring the pieces together efficiently and sustainably.

The station is surrounded with large agricultural land which offer a great landscape value. The liveability and sustainability of cities rely on diversity, heritage and local assets. The goal for the planing should be fining a solution to provide the residence with the community lifestyle as well as

provide the travellers a qualified service while recreating a density that can justified the development and make it more sustainable. The main idea behind the proposal is to create “connection”, connecting local residence community, connecting local business outside the city, connecting travellers with the tourism industry.

Then here, the new tourism-based commercial village along the railway line emerge, the proposal is a pedestrian priority district including the community services that benefit for the local resident, the tourism services that promote the tourism industry, the new areas for local merchandise to further develop their business. Relying on those local assets, diversity program, sufficient connection, the liveability and sustainability of the cities could be achieved.

Now that Kronoskogen has been given back to the people of Ängelholm, what once was a production forest can now be transformed from a monoculture into a natural, ecologically rich forest.

When the new connection is made over the railway, the city takes a leap into the forest and Bäckskogen forms around the new biodiverse forest system, creating a new urban landscape.

Much of the waterways in Kronoskogen have been damaged by forest machines during the years of production.

By restoring these waterways, the biodiversity can be strengthened. It is in the edges between water and nature, that the biodiversity is richest.

The buildings are organized as open blocks where most of the land is shared among the residents allowing for interactions with neighbours as well as with the nature. The development has a hard edge towards the road and the railway, and a soft edge towards the nature. The scale of the buildings is higher closer to the railway and lower towards the sea. There is also a decrease in scale and density on the soft edge.

In doing this, the monotone character of the production forest is broken up and given more qualities alike the varying landscape that is characteristic for the surrounding landscape of the region. By starting the development with nature, the ideal environmental conditions are created for flora and fauna to thrive.

The second part of the project is to integrate the natural habitats with a new living environment for humans.

In between the blocks there are green wedges open to the forest. The core of Bäckskogen is the waterways and wetlands that are connected by a boardwalk leading you through the ecologically rich forest, from the city to the sea.

The county of Skåne has some of the highest classified arable land in Sweden and the site of Barkåkra in Ängelholm is part of this agricultural landscape. The value of this agricultural land and the need for a more sustainable local food production became the main issue of the project.

The main driver for the urban development is striking a balance between new housing development and preservation of agricultural land.

Placement of the new development is informed by the connection between the train station and the commercial area of Valhall Park. Early on the project focus is densification along the main road of Skepparkroksvägen in order to create a pedestrian and bike friendly street. The goal is to encourage sustainable transportation usage for both inhabitants and commuters.

New housing is centered around green and blue spaces drawing inspiration

from the historical organisation of villages (rad- and rundby). Forest garden practices allows for multi-functional recreational spaces integrating the productive landscape into the urban fabric, providing economical, biological and recreational values.

Surrounding mono-cultural land provides an ample opportunity to explore new sustainable agricultural practices such as alley cropping and silvopastures building a new identity for the municipality around sustainable agriculture.

This proposal seeks to create a unique village structure which preserves the agrarian history and promotes community participation and stewardship through urban farming.

Since it’s beginning, agriculture and sea have been two main elements that make up the backdrop of Barkakra’s daily life.

My concept seeks deepen the elemental awareness of Barkakra’s natural surrounds through the creation of a new urban structure centred around the urban farming which link the adjoining residential clusters while preserving views of both sea and productive agriculture landscape.

During my analysis and study of regional train settlements, I identified basic programmatic elements and features such as proportion of public realm, communitiy ammentiies and their spatial relationship to the transportation hub. This analysis led me create a framework to understand the regional relationship of a ‘railway village’ and how settlements have traditionally been laid out along in relation the adjoining train settlements, Barkakra stood out as it did not follow a similar profile in spatial relationship or historic development. In contrast to these train villages, Barkakra’s profile consisted of a rich historical past with close ties to agriculture and small scale fishing activities. The preservation of both of these elements have been a main driver of this proposal which preserves the small village character of coastal agriculture village which is unique to the region.

Skåne country has a walking trail which is called Skåneleden and stretches through Skåne, including Ängelholm.

Kattegattleden is a biking trail reaching from Helsingborg, through Ängelholm and up to Göteborg. Ängelholm Forest loop aims to strengthen Ängelholms qualities by using the regional trail network. In Kronoskogen there are new trails added and connected to the regional trail network. Those new trails are linking to key places, creating a closed circle which connects the forest, Ängelholm city and the Öresund region. The design shall include all the inhabitants and attract people in the region to visit and move to Ängelholm.

Identified challenges in Ängelholm are the railway which creates a barrier between the city and the forest, there are few under passes and the existing two are located hidden from the railway station. All year around activities and

public services are located in the city and during summer the activities are located in the Kronoskogen area along the beach.

The proposed key places are strategical located where two or more trails are converging. Arriving on Skåneleden south of Kronoskogen the first key place will be the observation tower. Here it is possible to look out to the other key places and be able to track the distance and decide where to go next. Choosing the trail along the beach one will reach the pier with a sauna and restaurant.

Continuing on the loop trail you will reach the Naturrum. The loop trail continues through the development area, here you can choose to take the train back or continue walking the Ängelholm Forest Loop to reach back to the starting point or continuing up north on the regional trail network.

Barkåkra is a peaceful farmland north of Ängelholm. It lies on the border of different typologies, connecting the shore to farmland and woodland.

Traditionally, the land around Barkåkra station has been farmed which has created a valuable meadow typology.

However, certain islands in the landscape were left alone and now provide necessary shelter for a number of small animals living in the meadows.

In order not to destroy these, they have been mapped, and connected with natural paths.

Green Streets of Barkåkra is intending to help these paths remain strong, even with the urbanization of the train station, and integrate them into the urban landscape. The end result is a green suburb that promotes the health of both local wildlife and people.

The proposal introduces five green bridges crossing the railway, a green sculpture trail towards Valhall Park, a large station square, three green avenues, a new artificial stream, and space for future growth. Barkåkra, with it’s excellent connections, will be the perfect ecological home for first time renters or families who want to leave the city.

Kronoskogen is close to the city center but feels a little bit isolated in Ängelholm. The site has abundant landscape resources including forests, dunes, beaches and sea. Currently, the dunes, beaches and sea have a strong visual impact. However, the experience in the forest is good but monotonous and inconvenient to stay for a long time.

The main challenge of the site is how to connect to the city center and improve its experience by using the advantage of landscape resources. Therefore, my design vision is to create an experiential landscape.

First, one “forest” square will replace one parking lot on the way from the train station to the site to improve the sense of arrival and connection. Besides the two current connections from the city center, one bridge will be built to connect the city center with the site. According to two main street connections, a new street design with bio-swale is purposed on Rabockavagen

to gather people walk in the middle of the street to enhance the encounter while one mix-use area will be purpose between the train line and Banskolevagen.

The apartments, houses, ground-floor commercial and nature museum will be built in this area.

Also, the productive landscape for food and education will be applied on the ground and the rooftop in this area for a new kind of experience while water collectors will be applied on several rooftops to support the productive landscape. As for forest, one bird watching tower, two different walking level paths and several treehouses are purposed to enrich the forest experience. Last, the bio-swale will be applied in the newly developed area as well as the parking lots close to the sea to mitigate the flooding.

Ängelholm provides different regions with distinguishing qualities and values. The agricultural region and aspect of Ängelholm (Barkakra region), could be one of the city´s main special qualities which allows it to be supportive of its surrounding cities and strong, and independent on its own. Another special and unique site in Ängelholm is the Kronoskogen region, which is exceptional with its biodiversity and characteristics.

Across from Ängelholm’s train station, exploring the city edge and the nature edge, a new urban fabric that enables residents, commuters, visitors… to experience a settlement embedded in the landscape, and to take part in experiencing, sharing and producing the landscape.

This proposal builds on the location of Kronoskogen forest and its surroundings and the potential to establish stronger connections with the city, as the site can play the role of an interface. It is characterized by different landscape components and edges where we transition from the city to the sea.

The proposal is implemented in five phases. 1 : Crossing the bridge ; Building a pedestrian bridge that connects the train stations to a new node, and establishing a mixed-use development that builds on the proximity to the city. 2 : Activating the edges ; Creating

a development comprised of different amenities, housing typologies and a public realm that weaves into the fabric and connects the amenities, the houses, communal gardens and local squares.

3 : The attractive node ; A new public development that offers indoor and outdoor spaces, across from the new development. 4 : The village ; A small development that favors a lower density and shared permaculture gardens on the edge of the forest. 5 : Expanding the city interface ; Back to the starting point, the mixed-use development is incrementally densified to adapt to new needs and future demand.

The main design principles guiding the process consist of building a fabric with different typologies and amenities, and exploring various edge conditions.

It focuses also on activating the public realm: community center, learning facility, locals services, greenhouses and permaculture facilities, upcycling and re-use workshops.

Definition of a community hub A community hub is a public space that gathers groups together to offer a range of activities, programs and services. The variety of services reflect local needs and may be delivered by local people.

What?

The interaction between people and landscape is promoted by the community hubs. These hubs connect different people and activities and link together the existing settlements.

Vision The creation of community hubs is a concept of a district that integrates landscape and society into public and private space. Common areas and a selfsufficient opportunities are shared with neighbours within these hubs.

How? Each community is related to the landscape (agriculture, forest or beach) as main asset to work with and have different characteristics that complement each other. The walking path together with the landscape concentrates the activities to encourage social interaction and connecting every hub. The clusters of buildings are placed around the landscape and along the pedestrian paths, with shared backyards that create a community core.

Ängelholm has many different and unique landscapes including beaches, sand dunes, planted and natural forests, streams, urban cores, rivers, farmlands, and lakes.

The economy of the municipality is focused on its productive farmlands and its growing tourism industry, both of which the city hopes can be more diverse and inclusive in the future.

The design site is based in the coastal village Barkåkra in the north of Ängelholm.

The good soil quality is the reason why half of the site is given to agricultural land and it is the starting point of the project. The plan for the site includes community gardens and greenhouses maintained by the residents to grow food for the local community. These shared areas will enhance their proximity to nature and strengthen social interactions.

The main objective seeks to preserve the farmlands, the coastline, and the forests on-site.

The second strategy avoids urban sprawl by densifying near the attractive place: the train station.

And the third strategy is to connect the urban structures with continuous pedestrian pathways. These new connections will create multi-use pedestrian trails.

Finally, this new urban structure integrates solar energy and biodiverse food production cycles to be selfsustainable.

Kronoskogen is rich in natural resources and well-known as a hiking and beach destination. It is a coniferous and deciduous forest with some wet ditches that create habitat for different kind of animals, especially birds. With the natural resources as a strength of the site, it has an opportunity to become a natural learning for the community.

However, the area still lacks of accessibility and dynamic of activities which leads to decrease the number of visitors in the future.

The vision aims to create a district that represent the relationship of Angelholm’s character, farming, together with Kronoskogen’s strength, natural resources. At the same time, adding more dynamic to minimize the weakness of the site.

Barkåkra Common Gardens is a project that aims to achieve a status quo between nature and culture. In order to do that the in between space, the space between public and private, is programmed in a way that both gives space for gardening and corridors for bio-diversity. It is not about density of land use, but intensity.

I suggest a new type of garden – the common garden – which is a garden shared with your neighbors. The more space we use together, the more space is left for nature and habitats for other species, both animals and plants.

While at it, I suggest a garden villa with a smaller footprint than a conventional villa, with more verticality but with no private garden. The garden villa does not have any parking or garage, instead the habitants share cars or bike at the car pool located at the mobility center

by Barkåkra station.

The villas are accessible by narrow roads with a rural vibe. No reluctant surfaces and more space for species other than human. In between the gardens and the villas is a wild grown flowery field with fruit trees and plenty of space for pollinators. In garden you can harvest

The landscape is a central identifier for Barkåkra and a strong magnet for inhabitants, businesses and visitors.

Newly added railway station also offers new accommodation possibilities for growing population and adds excellent regional mobility opportunities. Though a connected area with the context, Barkåkra is also an isolated suburb of fragmented scenarios disconnected from the city’s urban fabric. A narrow but long beach with no constructed landscape or entertainment facilities for the tourists and has lows accessibility for people with different abilities.

Valhall Park is the densest part of the area that caters to different businesses, factories, hotels and most importantly the airport. It has road connected but that does not have a good bus network, less speed control of private cars and no separate lane for bikers.

Linked together in a choreographed sequence, the design proposes a series of “ living environments”, each

with a distinct character and role to play. Five themes were investigated during design: sustainable community, diversity, accessible and cohesive green structure, public place as meeting space and possibilities of economic acceleration along main connecting road as continuation of Valhal Park.

The planning is fragmented and laid out organically along existing slopes of the land. Echoing the undulating slopes the structures step diagonally or frontally and merge with the terrain creating minimal intervention with the land. The design progresses in three phases, first phase is developing water edge experiences, second phase emphasizes expanding the industrial and social scale to accelerate the socio economic relationship and third phase strengthens and supports more to that quality. The main road hold a prominent position in the plan, like a thread, that weaves social and commercial uses of land and tight urban fabric of the surrounding areas.

The Guiding Forest will use Kronoskogen to connect to regional paths and areas with recreational, ecological, productive and mobility values. The proposal aims to incorporate agroforestry, nature rooms and green corridors in its development of housing and mixed-use functions, to create an environment that guides its inhabitants around and into a sustainable future, in a region with high mobility and working opportunities.

Core of the project is to develop around the station area with diverse mix-used development to encourage use of the regional mobility by train network as well as contribute with diverse housing and working opportunities.

Thus, creating a node that connects the city with the forest. Existing roads in and around the forest to the beach is developed and activated with agroforestry, nature rooms, and outdoor classrooms strengthening and adding recreational values.

New functions can be used for shelter during rougher weather making the forest more accessible during the whole year. Common courtyards involve greenhouses that can be used for both farming and recreational uses. Agroforestry and structures with greenery is used to create biodiversity corridors for pollinators and other species, guiding them around the green areas of Ă„ngelholm.

“Streams meander through the forest as urban life grows from the terraced wetlands.”

Embedded in the North West Öresund Region of Sweden is an extended water landscape from lakes, rivers, streams and Ängelholm, the city by the sea. Yet the built environments depict a vastly different image and system of water.

With its unique landscape features and significance, the project proposes the urban forest of Kronoskogen, being the catalyst to reimagine a water vision in shaping its regional future, “Experience.

Live. Water.”

“Experience” rediscovers the magic from Skälderviken, Kronoskogen to Rönne Ä to create deeper connections and value with water. “Live” imagines living in integrated water systems from using, treating and capturing water within the forest. “Water” nurtures sustainable development and captures minds that are looking for a future in Ängelholm.

Watercourses, ridge contours, city lines, paths and infrastructure form the experimental Kronoskogen. Combining the existing and new, water drainage paths, streams and constructed wetlands support the growth of amenity rest areas, discovery centre, multi-purpose hall and multi-storey apartments.

Using water as the key design driver, one can begin to question and address issues, such as water security and resilience. In envisioning sustainable futures, the project strives to sustain life by viewing the built environment as a connected extension of the landscape.

My vision of Kronoskogen is meet in the green. Kronoskogen has a rich resource of the forest. People can jump into the sea, the forest or have another choice to meet each other around the communities outside. So I also design a green corridor which makes people connect with the green landscape. The green corridor is not only a pathway for walking and cycling, but also is a recreational area for social or stay alone.

Social strategy: In every community, I design a public landscape which combines the urban farming(people can grow vegetables) ,the green house(people can grow some flowers, fruits and also vegetables) and the glass house(people can have a fika here).

In the green corridor, it contains the playground, outdoor café, etc to gather people.

Environmental strategy: Some buildings have green roof. I design the energy house, use solar panel to

collect sunshine, which can heat the outdoor pool, it is a good way to solve the problem that the sea in the winter is not suitable for swimming. And I add the drainage ditches in the green corridor to collect the rainwater.

Economical strategy: Design green house and urban farming to let people grow vegetables and fruits, which is sustainable and sociable. And in the green corridor has some food trunks, where people can sell and buy.
