‘Salisi’ gang member arrested

DIPOLOG City––Police arrested six people who allegedly took a hand bag of shopper in Dipolog City in the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga del Norte, officials said.

Officials said the suspects, believed to be part of a robbery gang, were arrested after a security camera recorded

HAVE you ever gone to the island-province of Camiguin? If you have not yet been there, try to visit the place one of these days!

It was a weekend when my family went to Camiguin upon the prodding of my eldest daughter, Hannah Lou, who was the one arranging the trip.

Initially, some members of the family were not too eager to go considering the long trip from Dipolog City in Zamboanga del Norte to Camiguin, passing through the provinces of Misamis Occidental, Lanao del Norte and Misamis Oriental. But the planned family trip did happen on a weekend very recently.

Package tour A very reasonable package tour of P1,100 per person for a group of four has enabled the family to set foot on the island-province.

It covers one night accommodation with one breakfast and a tour to seven tourist spots within the island.

Inviting waters The cold, soda and hot springs are all crystal clear water oozing up from the ground. Running spring waters are contained in big swimming pools beckoning both the young and old to take a dip and soothe out their weary soul.

Excited to see the 70-meter Katibawasan Falls and the Hot Spring in Mambajao, the group just stayed for a few minutes at the cold spring, soda spring, church ruins and sunken cemetery. Upon reaching

the Katibawasan falls whose waters sloshing down from a run-off river, the urge to take a dip seemed irresistible. And when we got down there, we could not help but take a swim in the cold, clear water.

After getting out of the cold waters at Katibawan Falls, we proceeded to Ardent Hot Spring, which is six kilometers southwest of Mambajao. It was around 6:00 p.m. when we reached there, but the place was fully occupied. People from all ages were there to frolic in the hot spring.

The water there is indeed soothing and relaxing to the body because its penetrating heat seems to massage your weary muscles.

White Island Early morning on the following day, a pump boat operator woke us up to bring us to the White Is-

land, a white sandbar with Mt. Hibok-Hibok and Old Volcan as a backdrop. It is just a 10-minute ride from Yumbing, Mambajao.

Top tourist destination Camiguin has a number of beautiful natural spots.

It has two other waterfalls called Tuasan and Binangawan, another hot spring called Tangub, a four-hectare Mantigue Island, seven volcanoes and diving spots.

In fact, the Department of Tourism (DOT) has identified this island-province as one of the top 25 tourist destinations in the country, and number seven diving spot in the world.

This pear-shaped volcanic island, which is 10 kilometers off the coast of the province of Misamis Occidental, has a total land area of 238 square-kilometers.

It is also known for its sweet Lanzones fruit which is ubiquitous in all of its five municipalities of Catarman, Guinsiliban, Mahinog, Mambajao and Sagay.

Its unique landscape and pristine natural environment are an enticement difficult to resist for any nature lover. Wanna go there?

YANGON -- Tourism ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are committed to implementing tourism standards for the region and a common regional visa to ease travel barriers and boost tourism sector growth by up to 20 percent, according to the ongoing World Economic Forum earlier.

“We are trying to promote ASEAN as a destination by including two to three stops in one package,” a news release quoted Mari Elka Pangestu, minister of Tourism and Creative Economy of Indonesia, as saying.

The travel and tourism sector offers Myanmar an important opportunity to create jobs and boost employability, the release said.

Myanmar is also committed to boosting intra-regional trade with a common visa for ASEAN nationals to be made available in 2014, it said, adding that in the midst of an economic metamorphosis, the tourist sector is playing an important role in boosting

Myanmar’s urban and rural economies.

“Last year Myanmar received 1.06 million visitors. This year, we have been receiving visitors with a growth of 40 percent, but we want to get more,” noted U Htay Aung, Myanmar Minister of Hotels and Tourism, according to the statement.

Anthony F. Fernandes, group chief executive officer of AirAsia Malaysia and also a co-chair of the WEF on East Asia, said that Myanmar must consider how it wants to market its unique destinations, pointing out that with the availability of low-cost travel, young people are the drivers of growth in ASEAN’s tourist sector.

The 22nd World Economic Forum on East Asia, hosted by Myanmar for the first time, was formally opened at Myanmar International Convention Center in the country’s new capital of Nay Pyi Thursday.

At the forum, Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia and the Philippines

agreed to work on ASEAN Common Smart Visa and signed the Statement of Intent on SMART Visa.

The four countries expressed their intention to collaborate with relevant government agencies and other stakeholders to facilitate travel in the region by developing a common smart visa system.

The forum was inaugurated by Chairman of the World Economic Forum Klaus Schwab, Myanmar President U Thein Sein, Vietnamese PrimeMinister Nguyen Tan Dung and Lao Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong.

The three-day forum includes several separate sessions covering agenda of acceleration of ASEAN integration and dialogue with Myanmarbusinesses and energy development.

The forum, under the theme “Courageous Transformation for Inclusion and Integration,” brings together over 900 participants including over 500 business leaders from 55 countries and the host country.

The elusive peace PEACE is theologically understood as not just the absence of war or armed conflict but a situation in life that is devoid of any form of fear because most, if not all, enjoy fullness and abundance of life.

From the theological understanding of peace, hopelessness as a result of poverty regardless of the degree of its intensity surely does not bring about peace. Poverty, especially if it is so pervasive, just ensures un-peace in every aspect of human life in the level of the individual, families and society as a whole. The current un-peace in the country is undeniably spawned by poverty. In fact, the poorer the locality or province, the more intense the un-peace is.

In localities or provinces classified by the government no less as belonging to the poorest, the un-peace there has been brought to the level of armed confrontation between the hopeless poor against the very government that has sworn before God and man to serve them. Unless the government looks at the current un-peace as the result of hopelessness triggered by abject poverty, it’ll continue to hang on to the notion that this un-peace can be licked through the use of force.

The government should understand that by employing legalized violence to supposedly address the problem of un-peace will just beget more violence. This is the reason why our country is currently hosting the longest running rebellion all over the world because the government has always viewed the prevailing un-peace wrongly or from an erroneous perspective. The communist ideology that serves as the guiding star of the people who took it upon themselves to overturn the un-peace they are experiencing because of poverty is just incidental.

This rebellion will continue even beyond the lifetime of the present generation unless the government humbly accepts its error that employing the military option in solving this un-peace is not the best solution that should not even be considered as solution. The government view of licking criminality especially those that are committed against persons and property by simply installing closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) in practically every nook and cranny of all localities is stupendously the same with its solution to solve the un-peace as a result of poverty.

Guns and bullets no matter how legalized they may be can never improve the life situation of the poor. It is only by ensuring that the farmers in the countryside are always productive as farmers that poverty in the rural areas can be effectively addressed and thus eradicated.

How to ensure that the farmers are productive year round? It is by seeing to it that farmers own the sizable farmland they are to be tilling.

Farmers productivity all throughout the year can likewise be ensured if government allocates a huge amount of public funds to subsidize the acquisition by every farmer of mechanized farm implements, acquisition of high-grade seeds and organic fertilizer, farm support such as farm to market roads and irrigation system See peace, page 8

Exclusionary growth worsens Talent under Aquino administration we allow to go to waste!

THE country’s problem of exclusionary growth has been worsening in the last three years of the Aquino administration with increasingly rapid growth accompanied by dramatically slowing job creation, research group IBON reported. This is affirmed by the recently released labor force data which shows a 21,000 decrease in employed Filipinos to 37.819 million in April 2013 from 37.840 in the same period last year.

The economy has been registering higher year-onyear first quarter growth rates in the last three years: 4.6% (2011), 6.5% (2012) and 7.8% (2013). However, the rate of job creation as measured by the April quarterly round has been going in the opposite direction and markedly slowing: 4.0% (2011), 2.8% (2012) and negative 0.1% (2013).

This trend corresponds to decreasing net employment creation: 1.407 million (2011), 1.020 million (2012) and 21,000-contraction (2013).

According to IBON,

this general trend does not change even if it is argued that the reported 21,000 figure for jobs losses is relatively small and that it is still statistically possible that there have been some job creation.

The number of unemployed and underemployed Filipinos has increased by over a million since the Aquino administration came to power. There were 11.884 million unemployed and underemployed Filipinos in April 2013 compared to 10.877 million in April 2010, or a 1.008 million increase in the last three years of increasingly rapid growth.

IBON estimates that the real unemployment rate in April is 10.9%, the highest in the last three years, on top of an underemployment rate of 19.2% which remains markedly higher than the 15.6% reported in the same period a decade ago in 2003.

IBON’s estimates of real unemployment (i.e. 4.580 million unemployed in April 2010 and 4.632 mil-

lion in April 2013) seek to correct the change in the government’s employment methodology. The data on underemployment (i.e. 6.297 million in April 2010 and 7.252 million in April 2013) are official figures.

Comparing April job creation with first quarter growth rates reveals deep structural problems in the economy. A “rebound” was reported in agriculture in the first quarter (3.3%) from the same period last year (1.1%) but the sector shed 624,000 jobs. Manufacturing likewise grew faster, by 9.7% from 6.0% last year, but there was only a 1.1% or 35,100 increase in jobs in the sector. Farmers, fisherfolk, laborers and workers were worst hit with a cumulative 822,000 going out of work.

These outcomes are consistent with a concentration of economic benefits to rural elite and of foreigndominated firms in low value-added manufacturing. They also challenge the government to radically overhaul rather than insist on evidently failed neoliberal policies, the group said.

One got, at least, into a fatal hit; while 5 others landed nowhere but metalto-metal.

Investigators perceived one clear job-related motive; while the other belonging to passion is yet to be seen.

Lumondot is now treated in an intensive care unit at Capitol University Hospital.

It is amazing that when we meet people with great potential and who are left to Harry Tambuatco waste; does it not become our fault should we not be instrumental in propelling them to greatness assuming of course that you hold with you the opportunity to do so?

Clapping to show appreciation should never be enough.

The passive approach called appreciation is simply unacceptable and to leave it be has to be foul. Then again we do have this very particular trait of keeping others down just so we prop ourselves up. This is what we call the “crab mentality.”

Most managers suffer from this decease especially in this country. There are a number of good writers out there who never see publication in major broadsheets simply because they don’t have the means or politics for inclusion.

Our editors to begin with have all remained the same and their points of views dictating what we know to be public opinion.

Thank God for the internet and social sites that now allows a platform for talent to prosper. The same goes for TV where we are subjected to the same old faces that are required to be young but of no real talents other than to smile, act stupid and to clown around.

Editorials and TV hosts for the more serious are downgraded to look animated as if a freak, if you get my drift.

Workers blame Aquino’s policies for rise in unemployment

P resident B e n i g n o “Noynoy” Aquino III’s boast about the country’s supposed economic growth under his governance received a shock this week, as the rise in joblessness (7.5%) seems to match the “stunning” GDP growth (7.8%).

The latest data from the National Statistics Office (NSO) showed that the country’s unemployment rate rose to 7.5% this April, the highest under Aquino’s administration. National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Assistant Director General Rosemarie Edillon cited the extreme weather conditions as the main cause of the rise in unemployment. NEDA officer-in-charge (OIC) and deputy director general Emmanuel Esguerra cited the seasonality of agricultural employment and the adverse effects of natural disasters.

Excuses citing the weather and not Aquino’s economic policies unleashed bitter jokes in social networking sites.

Workers led by Kilusang Mayo Uno said the Aquino government “ran out of excuses.” The youth, who suffer the highest unemployment incidence compared to other age groups (almost half of unemployed are 1524 years old, almost a third are 25-34 years old), called on the Aquino administration to “stop making excuses.” Both workers and youth, led by Anakbayan, blame the rise in the number of unemployed Filipinos in April on the government’s economic policies.

Indeed, the jobs data reveal the pernicious effects of landlessness and lack of industrialization. Workers in the services sector remained the largest group of workers, making up more than half (52.6 percent) of the total employed. Workers in agriculture sector comprised the second largest group, accounting for 31.3 percent of the total employed. Workers in the industry sector made up 16.1 percent.

But while in industrialized countries, the bigger services sector is touted as a sign of being an advanced economy, in the Philippines, it suggests more the extent in which Filipinos would embrace odd-jobs just to have a livelihood.

Among the NSO surveyed as employed workers in the services sector, more than a third is made up by

those engaged in wholesale and retail trade or in the repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles.

Among the various occupation groups, laborers and unskilled workers comprised the biggest group making up one-third (32.6 percent) of the total employed persons in April 2013, the NSO also reported. But even they could not sustain their “employment.” NSO said the “employed” laborers and unskilled workers dropped by approximately 384,000.

The other bigger drop in number of employed came mostly from farmers, forestry workers and fishermen whose number decreased to approximately 4.960 million in April 2013 from 5.398 million in April 2012, or a decrease of about 438,000 workers.

Wage workers and fulltime workers reportedly increased in the same period, but it failed to make up for the drop in the other previously “employed.”

and labor export, scored “The root of the problem is that the current and previous administrations made our economy ‘export-oriented.’ Instead of modernizing our agricultural sector to achieve ‘food independence’ and provide a base for developing our local industries, it has been reduced to a mere provider of food products for foreign supermarkets and tables,” said Vencer Crisostomo, Anakbayan national chairman.

Previous reports showed persistent land struggles as cases of landgrabbing for export-oriented plantations occur side by side with farmers struggling in other small-scale farms or as tenants to make ends meet in between harvests.

Agriculture used to employ the biggest number of Filipinos, but as the youth leader said, for decades, the agricultural sector has been chronically stunted.

Just last week, peasants demonstrated in Manila to press for genuine land reform. They criticized as sham the current extended implementation of Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program begun under the administration of Noynoy’s mother.

In large plantations, meanwhile, farm workers and contract farmers share tales of low wages and low income, amid various health and safety problems at work posed by pesticides and other chemicals, long hours of work, dangerous equipment and unsafe working conditions.

Given the generally backward state of Philippine agriculture, “any effects caused by adverse weather conditions merely worsen the situation,” Crisostomo said. He concluded that “it is wrong to blame the poor state of agriculture on weather alone.”

The youth leader noted also that under Aquino, the interrelated fields of ‘labor export’ and ‘business process outsourcing’ are aggressively being pushed while programs for agricultural modernization, genuine agrarian reform, ending of cheap agricultural imports, and sufficient funding for support services such as irrigation, have been ignored.

What fathers do

LAST, Sunday, is Father’s Day. I solicited fond memories from friends and acquaintances about their wonderful days spent with their dads.

I am pleased to receive the following from them.

Story 1 : Twelve years ago, I flew from my home in Manila to spend Father’s Day with my father in this City.

This wasn’t a typical Father’s Day visit, but to say goodbye to my father, as his cancer rapidly advanced.

We hadn’t had much of a relationship up to that day and never did much talking. He wasn’t verbal or demonstrative nor was I. I knew he loved me simply because fathers love their children. He never told me he loved me and I never told him. That’s the way we did things in our house.

In a brief discussion during the visit, he reminisced as he told me a bit about his career growth from a poor boy to a very successful businessman.

He had accomplished a great deal through his hard work. He had reason to be proud of what he had done and I had the benefit of his success.

“Maybe I didn’t do things right, I never really knew you or your brothers. I did what I thought was right.”

This visit didn’t change our behaviors, we shook hands and said goodbye, as I left. Our relationship ended as we lived it.

As a father for more than 14 years I look back and understand why I am staying home full-time with my children.

By his actions, my father taught me to do what I think is right. I tell my children I love them every day, I hug them and I talk with them and let them know how important they are to me.

However, as much as we would like to believe that we are all ideal fathers we are not.

We all make mistakes and hopefully we learn from them, just as I learned from my father.

Story 2 : My father taught me strong moral values.

He taught me personal responsibility.

He taught me honesty and trust, he taught me to be compassionate and to respect all life.

He taught me the value of education, he taught me how to play and enjoy sports, he taught me how to make good decisions in life.

He taught me to have fun and to laugh, he taught me the meaning of work, and he taught me the meaning of love.

He did this by being a nurturing father, a basketball player, a firm disciplinarian, a hard and dedicated worker, and a loving parent. He was one who was there to share with me in times of joy and in times of hardship.

Generously, he gave me his personal time, his hardfought efforts, and his true self so that I may grow up to face this challenging world with courage, hope, and faith.

Story 3 : My father was not perfect and he did have his faults, his struggles, and his weaknesses.

He taught me, however, how to face these problems and challenges with a positive attitude and a strong will.

These examples and the great memories I have shared with my father are everlasting and have positively influenced my life like no one else could have.

The older I get, the better I understand my father because I find more and more of him in me.

He didn’t teach me to throw a ball (was it really all that important?). He did teach me to care about people, to keep learning, to have beliefs and to live by them. It took me awhile to realize what he gave me and I will always be grateful that he lived long enough for me to tell him so.

Thanks to its Public Information Officer’s cordial accomodation. She lent us her time to feel at home.

However, I couldn’t believe there was something behind the office secretary’s crisp and frisk-like smiles. She must be jittery but charming. She just mistook us of being interviewees, somehow!

A courtesy call is never a long ritual, at all.

Time passed us by, though. But the laid back from a staff to another that took us far too long made me anxious what was taking place in a seclusion by the end of the hall.

In Butuan, for example, the city government there is spent so much of their scarce resources in purchasing CCTV cameras, improving their natural park into a cemented one, buying a lot of radio airtime to paint a rosy picture of their thorny programs and projects, to name just a few.

The labor leader invited the public to join “tens of thousands of workers” who would protest on President Aquino’s third State of the Nation Address next month. Aussie missile frigate rescues 3 Pinoys sailors injured in tanker fire

PAGADIAN City––An Australian frigate rescued three Filipino sailors who were wounded during a fire on their oil tanker in the Somali Basin, according to a recent report by the Herald Sun. It said the sailors were injured from the machinery fire on the Liberian-registered merchant tanker Perl The guided-missile frigate Newcastle of the Royal Australian Navy was called in to help the sailors. The report quoted Newcastle Commander Paul O’Grady as saying that the fire had left the oil tanker powerless, adrift and vulnerable to pirate attack.

The Newcastle was in the area conducting maritime security operations in the region as part of collaboration between the French and Spanish navies.

“After steaming 100 nautical miles at best speed to reach the Perla, the sea state prevented us from rendering immediate assistance,” O’Grady said. “Being in a known pirate area, we took up a security position for Perla.”

The report said while the frigate kept guard until conditions improved, Filipino-born Able Seaman John Baguio, a member of the ship’s medical team, reassured the injured sailors over radio.

“I was humbled that I could help merchant seamen from my old country, as a member of my new country’s Navy. Before leaving the Philippines, I had trained to be a merchant seaman myself, so this whole situation was surreal,” the Australian newspaper quoted Baguio as saying.

It said Navy medics were able to winch aboard the Perla and recover two men with second and third degree burns to their face, head, shoulders and hands. They also treated a third man who had a second degree burn to his arm.

The pair is now recovering in a Seychelles hospital after being transferred to Spanish Naval Ship SPS Numancia following a night aboard the Newcastle.

We should not just give alms or dole outs; we should equip them with necessary skills and know-how so they can fend for themselves,” said Villar.
