Cops collar suspects behind student’s slay

VALENCIA City--Police authorities arrested the alleged mastermind and his cohorts responsible behind the death of a second year criminology student few days after the Valentines Day. Police Insp. Lito Limbago Tizon managed to arrest 31-year-old Joseph Clareto during a separate manhunt operation on February 17.

Tizon seized from Clareto a .38-revolver loaded with three live bullets bearing serial number S.226164.

Clareto allegedly masterminded the death of 18-yearold Romeo Buluag Jr., a second year criminology student, a resident of purok 2, Barangay Batangan, Valencia City.

Two of Clareto’s alleged cohorts were also arrested––in a separate operations––by a team of policemen led by police Insp. Gregorio Adrigado. Arrested were 25-year-old Jomar Asingua and 18-year-old Eric Calledo, all residents of purok 9, Barangay Bagonta-as in Valencia City.

According to the police, Clareto ordered Calledo to strike the head of Buluag with a hard object while he is pointing his gun to the victim.

Police investigators said Asingua dragged the victim’s body to the grassy area where he was found dead.

The police said the suspects took the victim’s cash worth P300, back pack, T-shirts, short pants, and underwear.

The suspects are now detained at the Valencia jail while waiting for the trial of the criminal charges filed against them.

CAGAYAN de Oro City––A bill to provide the public with adequate education on the effects of exposure to mercury was re-filed in Congress after the Senate failed to act on it during the 15th Congress.

Rep. Rufus Rodriguez, 2nd District of Cagayan de Oro City, said that the bill was originally introduced as House Bill No. 3285 was approved by the Committee on Health and substituted

approved on 2nd reading, approved on 3rd reading during the 15th Congress and was transmitted to the Senate where it was not acted upon.

He said that the bill was re-filed under House Bill 1617 in the 16th Congress by requiring the posting of appropriate advisories at all businesses that sell fresh, frozen, and canned fish and seafoods where the potential for mercury exposure exists.

According to the Rodriguez bill, the mercury discharges into the atmo-

sphere and surface oceans have increased two-to-five fold since the beginning of the industrialized period due to human activities.

It said that there is now substantial evidence that the exposure to methylmercury has become widespread in the general public and occurring at higher than health-based levels of concern according to the World Health Organization.

Fish and seafood caught or sold in the Philippines are contaminated with methyl-mercury, a toxic element that may cause neurological damage and other health related problems as a result of fish or seafood consumption, the bill said.

gued that the evidences linking an increased risk of coronary heart disease of mercury exposure, as presented in at least 2 peer reviewed studies, have been increasing.

Rodriguez said that he filed the bill because the health advisory information on mercury-contaminated fish, which is necessary to protect public health, is not widely known to the government.

This lack of awareness potentially threatens tens of millions of Filipinos who may unknowingly ingest harmful amounts of mercury because they are not aware of exposure risks from consumption of freshwater fish and seafood, he said.

My Surprise Proposal at Primavera Residences

here comes a point in a man’s life when he can either man up and decide to spend his lifetime with the woman he wants to marry or just continue being single and free.

I chose the former, and so now I will talk about how I pulled off a nailbiting and nerve-racking marriage proposal.

Most men I know don’t bother about staging a full-blown surprise proposal since it entails careful preparation and creativity.

Others would choose to be practical and pour all of that effort in the wedding itself.

But being a selfconfessed true blue romantic that I am, I decided to give it my best shot and show the woman I love how truly blessed I am to have her in my life.

To those who wish to do the same, here are some tips that just might help you.

DOH partners with private sector in pneumonia battle

BUTUAN City––The Department of Health Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) in Caraga met with members of the Community Pediatric Society of the Philippines (CPSP)Caraga Chapter in cooperation with the Agusan del Norte Medical Society to discuss the Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV) for children six weeks to one year old.

Launched in 2013, the Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine is now part of the regular vaccines for infants below one year of age. Caraga Region and Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao are the first regions to have received the PCVs, to complement the Rotavirus Vaccine which was introduced in 2010. CHD-Caraga said the Pneumococcal Vaccine will address the need for better

incidents of pneumonia in the region. In 2012, records show that Pneumonia topped as the leading cause

of under-five mortality in Caraga Region. We deem not to simply reduce it, but to control it as well.”

The World Health Organization reports that more than 1.5 million children die from pneumonia each year.

There are 4,300 young lives lost every day worldwide because of pneumonia, 37 of which are Filipinos – meaning, one child dies from pneumonia every 20 seconds worldwide.

Pneumonia is an inflammatory condition of the lung which primarily affects the microscopic air sacs known as alveoli. The typical symptoms of pneumonia include a cough, chest pain, fever, and difficulty in breathing.

Although antibiotics are available for pneumonia treatment, good nutrition, breastfeeding, and good hygiene are also helpful preventive measures. However, these are not real guarantees – especially for the young.

Vaccination is the best way to protect children from pneumonia and its lifethreatening complications.

High school graduates in Misamis Occidental to get cash rewards CLARIN, Misamis Occidental – The second congressional district of Misamis Occidental will be giving out cash rewards to all graduating high school students in this municipality, this School Year 2013-2014.

Congressman Henry S . O am i n a l m a d e t he announcement dur ing the 93rd Araw ng Clarin, last Feb. 21, which would benefit all the high school graduates of Clarin National High School, and the Holy Child High School, a public and private school in Clarin, respectively.

He said first honor graduates will receive P3,000, each, 2nd Honor to 5th Honor graduates, P2,000, each, the rest of the top 20 graduating students, P1,000, each, and all the rest, despite their low marks in school, as long as they are able to graduate, P500, each.

He also encouraged those who would like to enter college to avail of

the Educational Assistance Program sponsored by the district to all interested high school graduates, with no discrimination, “as long as they have no failing grades.”

About 100 of these scholars will be receiving P4,000 per semester as financial assistance but those who are poor but deserving students will get full scholarship following some guidelines, he said.

Meanwhile, he said those who would like to avail of vocational training can avail of scholarship grants to be funded by the P3.5 million that the District has deposited with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) in the province.

TUBOD, Lanao del Norte – To allow the local species of fish to increase its population, the Provincial Government of Lanao del Norte (PGLDN) together with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 10 is actively working with coastal LGUs for the rehabilitation of fish sanctuaries in this province.

One of the priority projects is the rebuilding and rehabilitation of fish sanctuaries in coastal communities.

To achieve this, PGLDN and BFAR distributed fish sanctuary materials last February 18, 2014 at the Macapagal Training Center, Provincial Capitol Grounds, in the capital town Tubod.

Among the materials distributed to municipal agriculturists and caretakers of fish sanctuaries were buoys, monofilaments, and life jackets.

“We’re really thankful to the provincial government especially Governor Khalid Dimaporo and to BFAR for this assistance to our fish sanctuary. As an officer of Bantay Dagat, this will be a

big help to us in helping preserve our marine resources,” expressed Lala Agriculturist Edmon Laroco.

Among the 10 coastal towns that received the marine implements were Linamon, Kauswagan, Bacolod, Maigo, Kolambugan, Tubod, Baroy, Lala, Kapatagan and Sultan Naga Dimaporo.

Accepting the fish sanctuary materials were Eden Vosotros (Linamon), Adelino Rico (Kauswagan), Laloy Paseje (Bacolod), Edwin Garcia (Maigo), Nestor Denore (Kolambugan), Romeo Alajas (Tubod), Edmund Lumacad (Baroy), Edmon Laroco (Lala), Francisco Bihod (Kapagatan), and Romeo Umandang (Sultan Naga Dimaporo).

All coastal municipalities have identified fish sanctuaries to ensure that local fishes are able to replenish their population. 20 meters from every fish sanctuaries are buffers zone. Fishing is strictly prohibited in both the sanctuary and buffer zone with corresponding penalty for violators.

Similarly, Aquino pressed for the Cybercrime Law as his administration entered into more PublicPrivate Partnerships, consented to massive land grabbing, paved the way for more US military intervention and pushed for other policies detrimental to people’s interests.

It is but the newest addition to the government’s already-stacked arsenal for political repression that includes extrajudicial killings, disappearances, political persecution, and other measures under its counter-insurgency program, Oplan Bayanihan.

The alternative press is one with all freedom-loving Filipinos who have no recourse but fight these measures and uphold our right to criticize government iniquity.

Together, we must challenge the Cybercrime Law in all available spaces, from filing a Motion for Reconsideration before the Supreme Court, to taking our campaign to the Internet, and even to the streets.

Let this be the clarion call of our times: Resist Aquino’s eMartial Law.

MALAYBALAY City––My childhood was nothing but fun and adventures. I lived in an utterly blissful place where anything was possible because I knew my parents were always there for me.

My father was one of those people who value discipline and courage like it’s the most important thing in life. My mother, on the other hand, was calm and gentle and did not reinforce ‘discipline’ if we just behaved ourselves.

My childhood years were molded by these two great people on my side and because of them I began to see everything in life hued with sunlight and rainbows.

There were occasional rains and storms in our life but they stood firm and cocooned us with the love they selflessly gave and in return, we loved them with all our hearts.

Then one day, everything changed.

I can still remember it clearly like it was yesterday.

It was 3:00 PM of June 19, 2006. I rode a tricycle on my way back home and was surprised that no one was still there. A moment later, a friend of my parents came and told me that my mother and father met an accident on their way back home. Many people would be shocked from this kind of news, but for me who had seen my father and mother in the hospital due to motorcycle accidents, this kind of things wasn’t new to me.

After a minute or so while waiting for my elder siblings another friend of my parents stopped by and told me something that sucked out all the colors in the world, and left me deaf and mute for a few seconds.

The only thing I could hear was the hard platter of rain on our roof.

My parents are dead and what’s more worse, they were killed by the hands of another human being.

Nothing is forever in this world. I knew this fact a long time ago while watching all my toys get broken but still, the loss of their lives is something unbearable for a child who believed that Santa Claus exists and in every end of the rainbow, lays a pot of gold. The thing about pain, it demands to be felt and that deep piercing pain that’s making its way to my heart. And when I saw the motorcycle, which still had the smear of blood and gunshots all over it, the pain became worse until it’s screaming for vengeance against those people who have done this.

Then the memorial service came and we all took turns to see the face of my most beloved parents resting on their own coffins, and I realized what death really means. Before, death was just a word. But now, death is a void, snuffing out the fire of life of one and leaving the others, desperately wondering, where the light and warmth has gone.

My parents, both martyrs and catalysts of truth, didn’t deserve to die like this. But

funny how life works, it shows you how beautiful it is for a moment and the next second, it decides to show you the worst side of it and because of this sudden change, you begin to adapt to it. That’s what I’ve experienced as the days began to pass. Gone is the kid who thought life is all about positive stuff. That was just a dream, this is reality.

As their graves were being lowered into the ground, everybody began to cry, some with sorrow, anger, and misery, while I just stared, wondering why would this happen to my family. Without my parents, who would stuff candies on our socks during Christmas?

To whom can we confide our deepest dreams and fears? Who will cook us those crazy-experimented dishes that we learned to love? Who can we turn to when we face problems which we can barely handle?

All of these swam into my mind, trying to lure me to that sense of hopelessness.

But I did not glue in. My family is the only thing I have with me and I must be strong like my elder brother and sister.

Together, we can face anything, even the grief that has already gripped us.

Two years after the funeral, my younger siblings and I moved here in Bukidnon to live together with my Aunt’s family. We adjusted well with the people around me but I never forget about the change that was inflicted upon me. That change made

me realize that we have only one life to thread so we have to make it into a beautiful pattern that will make us stand out for as long as we live.

There’s a quote that says, “Do not let the death of one be the death of yourself,” and he got it right, but the reality is the death of the one close to your heart will change you into something you are not expecting to be. For me, it really has changed me, I don’t know if it’s for better or for worse. The death of the light and the columns of my life gave me the skill to see in darkest times and gave me strength to carry the burden imposed by life itself.

But don’t get me wrong, I’m not that classic emo who blames God and the world for everything that has happened. I’m just one of those persons who have begun to understand how life works and even with all kinds of struggles and hardships, still know how to enjoy and be thankful for it.

You can only live once in your life and that’s what makes life so precious. So smile for it, laugh for it, cry for it, fight for it, and most important of all, learn from it. Prophesied flesh-eating disease erupts in Pangasinan LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… The Lord will afflict you in your knees and on your legs with painful, incurable boils---from the soles of your feet to the top of your head…” (Deuteronomy 28:35, the Bible).

-oooPROPHESIED FLESH AND BONE EATING DISEASE ERUPTS IN PANGASINAN: Bandila, the ABS CBN daily late night-early morning news program, came up with a story, complete with video footages, which tend to confirm prophecies made by an Indian Christian Pastor in April 2013 that a flesh and boneeating disease will afflict many people in Pangasinan, then will spread to Cebu and to the whole world, in the aftermath of the devastation brought about by Typhoon Yolanda last year.

I wish to congratulate Ms. Jasmine Romero, the reporter who is bravely pursuing the story despite the obvious risk to her own health, Julius Babao, the news anchor, and the ABS CBN management for allowing the story to air, and the video footages of at least two victims---a young girl and a young man---from the towns of Sta. Barbara and Villasis in Pangasinan, showing the fearful extent of the diseases that seem to be eating them alive, from the soles of their feet to their heads.

Julius asked the deadly question at the end of Ms. Romero’s story: is there a connection between what the Indian Christian pastor, now known internationally as Prophet Sadhu, prophesied in April 2013, and the disease that is now spreading in Pangasinan? Indeed, is there such a connection?

-oooDISEASE ARISES FROM LACK OF SPIRITUALITY: I believe there is, not only because Sadhu said so, but more because this was prophesied in the Bible. My firm conviction is that Biblical prophesies, in that they were made under the inspiration of God (see 2 Timothy 3:16), will come to pass and will happen, whether humans like it or not.

Many may ask: where, specifically, did the Bible say that this kind of an illness will happen in the Philippines?

My answer is that the Philippines may not have been specifically mentioned in the Bible, but the conditions which the Bible said will give rise to this kind of a deadly disease are undeniably happening in this country right now, so that there is no doubt at all that the devastating prophecies apply inevitably to Filipinos, too.

Let us start off with the prophecy in Deuteronomy 28:15. This Biblical verse is quite categorical in its warning: if a nation no longer listens to God (meaning that, its people no longer read the Bible) and no longer obeys His commands, God will send curses to them that are intended to destroy them.

-oooDISEASES NOT EVEN WRITTEN IN THE BIBLE TO AFFLICT NON-BELIEVERS: One of these curses, found in Deuteronomy 28:58-61, reads like this: “If you refuse to obey all the words of this law, the things written in this scroll, and refuse to fear this glorious and awesome name, the Lord your God, then the Lord will increase your punishments and those of your descendants---great and long-lasting afflictions and severe, enduring illness.

“He will infect you with all the diseases of Egypt that you dreaded, and they will persistently afflict you.

Moreover, the Lord will bring upon you every kind of sickness and plague not mentioned in this scroll of commandments, until you have perished…”

Indeed, the disease now ravaging Pangasinan is a sickness and plague not mentioned in the Bible. Then, no one can question that, despite all pretense to the contrary, many Filipinos no longer listen to God, as many of them no longer read the Bible, and no longer obey God’s commands. Many Filipinos now sport a faith “only in their lips, no longer in their hearts”, and many of them are satisfied with mere traditions and practices which are not even Biblical.

3 killed in Basilan ambush B ASILAN – Three people were killed in ambush in the troubled province of Basilan in the Muslim autonomous region in southern Philippines, an army spokesman said.

Capt. Jefferson Mamauag, of the 1st Infantry Division, said the jeep was travelling in the village of Bohe Baca in Tipo-Tipo town when gunmen attacked the vehicle with automatic weapons.

He said one passenger was also wounded in the ambush believed to be connected to a clan war. Those killed in the attack have been identified as Amir Saribin, 21; Halim Randa, 18 ; and Hadji Alih Ibrahim,

38; and the wounded passenger as Haber Cuevas, 25.

Mamauag, quoting a report from Lt. Col. Cristobal Julian Paolo Perez, commander of the 18th Infantry Battalion, said the jeep – owned by Hakim Tahil – was heading to Lamitan City when the attackers opened fire on the passengers.

“Rido is likely motive of the attack,” Perez said.

Rido is the local term

for clan war or family feud, which is not uncommon in Basilan, just several nautical miles south of Zamboanga City.

Perez said troops retrieved the corpses in the area after they cleared the village and handed them over to their respective families. Authorities are investigating the attack to determine who were behind the ambush. (Mindanao Examiner)

Suspects in oil firm employee’s slay charged ZAMBOANGA CITY – Police filed on Monday a murder charge before the City Prosecutor’s Office against three suspects in the killing of an oil firm employee in this city.

Supt. Diomarie Albarico, commander of Police Station 11, said the case was filed after the suspects and the alleged mastermind were arrested in a follow-up operation over the weekend.

Albarico identified the suspects as Guillermo Sasabo, the alleged triggerman, Joebert Delos Reyes, the motorcycle driver, and Ruben Clemente, the alleged mastermind and an employee of the Petron depot here.

Albarico said they were tagged as behind the killing of Joey Malaki, 30, a warehouse clerk of the Petron depot, last February 17 in Suterville, Barangay Lower Calarian, this city.

Malaki was driving his bicycle on the way to work when fatally shot by one of two men aboard a motorcycle.

Albarico said Robert Clavecilla, also an employee of the Petron depot, told them he knows who killed Malaki when they interviewed the victim’s co-employees.

The police official said Clavecilla alleged that sometime in January, Clemente told him to look for guns-for-hire.

Clemente allegedly gave Clavecilla an envelope containing P10,000 as down payment, a caliber .45 pistol and the victim’s picture which he gave to the two alleged killers, Albarico said.

The motive of the incident was work-related because sometimes the victim served as an inspector aside from being a warehouse clerk, he added. (MindaNews)

ISABELA CITY, Basilan -- Basilan Bishop Martin Jumoad led the memorial ceremony for the victims of violence in the province at the Memorial for Peace shrine at the Querexeta Formation Center here last Feb. 14.

At least thirty workers and guests gathered at a liturgical ceremony to commemorate the countless victims of violence in Basilan, remembering mostly Catholic Christians who fall victims to atrocities especially at the height of the dreaded Abu Sayyafs.

On Feb. 14, 1999, Abu Sayyaf opened fire on a jeep full of Christian catechists from Tumahubong, Basilan who were on their way to an Alay Kapwa seminar in Isabela town. Some of the victims were hacked with bolos. Six were killed in the ambush.

Bishop Jumoad reminded the faithful “not to allow darkness to conquer Basilan” and that through peoples’

good acts, they become the witness of the Catholic faith in Basilan.

“The beautiful liturgy today reminds us that we are called to be witnesses of our faith. Be the light of the world. Be the light of Basilan. And never allow darkness to conquer you,” the Bishop said.

Recognizing that Basilan has been through a lot of pain and that many, both Muslims and Christians, have already sacrificed so much. The Bishop said that violence persists because many have refused also to do one’s share to stop the violence and killings.

“I think this is really the time to come out and do something in order that Basilan will really be a beautiful place, a paradise, and that peace will truly reign here in Basilan,” the Bishop said as he lamented that fear continue to hinder many witnesses of crimes to come out.

DAVAO CITY - A congressional representative from Davao Oriental's first district appreciated President Benigno Simeon Aquino’s concern over the lack of electricity in most of the barangays among the towns of Baganga, Cateel and Boston, hardest hit by typhoon Pablo in 2012.

Speaking to reporters following the visit of the president in Cateel, Davao Oriental in line with the 28th People Power Revolution Anniversary, Representative Nelson Dayanghirang said it is good that the President also sees the problem.

He said electricity has been restored only on the town centers and the barangays along the national highway but not in the interior areas.

Dayanghirang said the local government units of the affected towns have already complied with the necessary documentation for a P51-Million fund for the overall restoration of electricity, but agencies like the Department of Energy and the Department of Budget and Management have not responded yet to their plea.

“We are happy to the assurance of the President that he will approve the release of the said amount with the instruction to the Department of Energy for immediate implementation,” he said.

Dayanghirang said that in Cateel alone, 27 barangays remain in the dark given that its main electrical line is only single-phase.

He said that with the single-phase electrical line, commercial firms cannot operate efficiently because of the lack of power.

Dayanghirang said the amount being requested is enough to restore and normalize the flow of electricity to all the affected barangays and towns.

Cateel was the president’s first stop of his

sortie on calamity- affected communities in the country in line with the commemoration of the 28th Edsa People Power Revolution.

He then proceeded to Bohol, Cebu and Tacloban City.

In his speech, President Aquino bared he called Energy Secretary Petilla, Budget and Management Secretary Florencio Abad and the administrator of the National Electrification Administration after he learned that electricity has not been fully restored in the typhoon-affected areas in Davao Oriental.

He recalled that the government also responded by providing 508,234 food packs to the affected communities and the creation of the Task Force Pablo, to fast track and to coordinate the rehabilitation of the affected areas consequently providing P10.5-Billion.

Davao cops arrest 2 women over P67-M sweepstakes scam

AVAO CITY – Police authorities here arrested Tuesday two women after they were caught swindling a 72-year-old retired teacher.

Police Superintendent Joel Consulta, chief of San Pedro Police Precinct, revealed that suspects Maria Padrones of Cotabato City and Fatima Sinsuat of Sultan Kudarat were arrested in an entrapment operation Tuesday morning.

Consulta said the modus operandi of the suspects is to go directly to the house of their targets, pretending

to be personnel from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO).

The suspects would then tell their targets that they had won a multi-million price from sweepstakes and would demand a certain amount as processing fees to facilitate the release of their prize.

Police records showed that the two women went to

the residence of Sarah Ampara, 72, a retired teacher living in Bajada, Davao City.

Ampara told the police that both women had been able to convince her that she had won a P67-million sweepstakes prize.

The victim added the suspects demanded for P310,000 to process the release of the amount.

Initially, Ampara said she gave P102,000 to the suspects on February 17, and they agreed to do another transaction to complete the amount on February 25.

But the victim realized that she had been swindled, prompting her to seek police assistance.

Consulta said they then designed an entrapment operation which resulted in the arrest of two women inside the Philippine National Bank (PNB) along C.M. Recto Street, this city.

Swindling and estafa charges are being prepared against the two women.

Consulta also warned the public about the scam which had also been proliferating through text messages. (PNA)

At around 5:45 a.m. of Feb. 14, 1999, the vehicle of San Vicente Ferrer, Tumajubong Parish was ambushed at Sitio Guiong, a few kilometers from Tumajubong proper. On board were six parish workers (including the driver) who were on their way to the capital town of Isabela to attend the Alay Kapwa Recollection Seminar. Five were killed, namely, Emiliano Eugenio, Abundio Salburo, Teodoro Escabarte, Alma Rabaca, and Forunata Abasto. Only one had survived.

The bishop has encouraged the people to continue reflecting on what each one has done for Basilan. He told the faithful that 2014 was declared by the Church as the year of the laity, a reminder that the laity must be at the forefront in order that the church may become active and alive always.

The PCV is designed to protect the children from invasive pneumococcal diseases, such as meningitis and sepsis, pneumonia, and acute otitis media, therefore reducing the incidence of morbidity and mortality among Filipino children.

The Department of Health is now spearheading an initiative targeted in Mindanao to curb the high incidence of this deadly disease among children. A vaccination program against pneumonia will start this year called, “DOHbol Time Laban sa Pulmonya.” It aims to get all children aged six weeks living in Caraga and ARMM regions protected against the disease through vaccination.

Caraga, being one of the many regions with the highest number of pneumonia cases was chosen by DOH and GlaxoSmith Kline for the initiative. DOH-Caraga 2012 data reveal pneumonia as the number one cause of mortality among infants and under-five children and number two cause of morbidity of the same age group. A reduction in these cases would be a milestone achievement of the DOH. The initiative is in line with DOH’s strategy in achieving Millenium Development Goal 4 which is the reduction of childhoos mortality by 2015.

GSK’s Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine is the chosen vaccine that will be administered to the children as part of the DOH’s Expanded Program on Immunization. The vaccine has shown to be highly effective and demonstrated 93 percent to 100 percent effective in preventing the disease, DOH said.

GSK Medical Director Philip Cruz said, “With the help of the DOH and the local government units, we are committed to the reduction of pneumonia cases nationwide by supplying the vaccines. This silent killer accounts for an alarming 37 mortalities per day in the Philippines.

Gov. Emano pushes organic farming in Misamis Oriental MISAMIS Oriental––Governor Yevgeny Vincente B. Emano of Misamis Oriental on Tuesday encouraged farmers to adopt organic farming as a major thrust of the province’s agricultural program.

Emano made the call during the three-day training of trainers in wholesome and acceptable agriculture practices in a seaside hotel here.

Some 32 farmers from various municipal towns in Misamis Oriental participated the training, part of a region wide program of

the Agricultural Trainng Institute of the Department of Agriculture in Northern Mindanao.

Linda P. Tecson, a senior agriculture official in Misamis Oriental, said that the training covered technology in good agricultural practices in vegetable propagation.

She said that the training was a good avenue to understand further the guidelines on organic certification for vegetable growers.

Tecson said that the training was timely as “people nowadays are shifting into a healthy lifestyle,

some may prefer organic produce.”

Aside from assuring the consuming public about healthy diet, the farmers will also get extra income in organic farming, Tecson added.

Emano said that aside from having a favorable climate, the province of Misamis Oriental is endowed with rich and fertile soil that are suitable for organic farming and allows the growing of all kinds of agricultural crops.

SK allots P10m for tree plantation GENERAL Santos City––The provincial government of Sultan Kudarat has allocated some P10 million for the development starting this year of a 200-hectare tree plantation in Lutayan town.

Datu Tungko Saikol, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 12 director, said Tuesday the local government recently started the initial preparations for the project, which it adopted as among its priority reforestation initiatives.

He said the agency will be assisting the

project’s implementation through the government’s flagship National Greening Program (NGP).

“The project will mainly focus on the planting of high-value trees like rubber and other indigenous tree species,” the official said in a statement.

Saikol said the local government has designated a farmer’s group based in the project area in Barangay Tanansang in Lutayan as the project’s main implementer.

He said the group, which is called Barangay Tanansang Farmers’ Association, is composed of B’laan tribal residents.

Sultan Kudarat Gov. Suharto Mangudadatu has

already approved the release of the initial funding for the project, which was also endorsed by its provincial board.

Rep. Raden Sakaluran of the province’s first district committed additional funding support for the project, which is the first NGP initiative in Lutayan town.

Saikol said they pushed for the implementation of the reforestation project, which is among the biggest in the region this year, as part of their climate change adaptation initiatives.

He said the agenc y has been encouraging the launching massive tree planting activities in the

region to help build up the area’s “carbon sink.”

“These will eventually take in and process the excess carbon dioxide that we excrete, preventing the potential damages that they might create to our environment,” he explained.

Carbon dioxide is one of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming, which is considered “a “man-made calamity,” Saikol said.

Renewable energy developer plans $100-M solar projects SOLARUS Partners, Inc. plans to spend $100 million to develop solar power projects with a total capacity of 50 megawatts (MW) this year, a top official of the renewable energy resource developer told reporters on Friday.

“About half of our pro-

jects are moving forward.

We are looking at a total of 50-MW solar projects.

These would cost would cost a total of $100 million and will start this year,” Tetchi C. Capellan, Solarus managing director, said via text.

Ms. Capellan said these projects involve two 12-MW

facilities in South Cotabato and in Cabacan, Davao City.

The remaining 26-MW capacity will involve facilities in other parts of Mindanao and the Visayas.

Ms. Capellan said that the company is currently working on the environmental compliance certificate and

local government permits for the first two projects.

“Installation of the solar panels will take around six to eight weeks. That’s fast, actually. It’s the permitting that takes time,” Ms. Capellan said.

In August last year, Ms. Capellan said Solarus was

in talks with four electric cooperatives to buy electricity from the planned solar projects.

Solarus is a local firm that engages in the development of solar power projects. The company had partnered with the Bank of the Philippine Islands for

a 2.5-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system in one of the bank’s branches in Makati City.

The company is also conducting a study on the possible installation of similar solar systems in the bank’s branches in Boracay and El Nido.

The Group said it successfully concluded a tender offer for publicly-held 39,976,233 shares in PCKH. No tendered shares were

rejected.

It also bought the casual dining chain operator’s 193,183,967 private shares from its former principal shareholders.

In aggregate, the Max’s Group acquired a total of 223,160,200 PCKH shares representing about 89.95 percent of outstanding PCKH shares.

“The Max’s Group is extremely excited about having completed another historic milestone in the Philippine restaurant industry,” said Robert Trota, PCKH’s new chairman.

“Together, we look

forward to growing our business in the Philippines and globally,” he said.

The purchase of the public and private shares at P15 apiece was transacted Monday through trades on the facilities of the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE).

BPI Capital Corp. acted as the exclusive financial adviser to the Max’s Group for this transaction.
