A lawmaker is urging Congress to approve a bill creating a research body to make mining activities in the country become more responsible and ultimately more acceptable to the people. Rep. Erlpe John “Ping” M. Amante (2nd District, Agusan del Norte) said House Bill 5293 establishes the National Research Center for Sustainable Mineral Industry (NRCSMI), which shall lead in the research and development of sustain-
able practices and technologies in the mineral industry. Amante said the Philippines is blessed with very large quantities of mineral resources valued at over $1 trillion making it the 5th most mineralized country in the world. GO out to the needy, Pope Francis urged in his fourth tweet on his official Twitter account, @Pontifex on Sunday just moments before he lead his last mass in the country at the Quirino Grandstand.
The Pope had once again tweeted in Filipino, making this the fourth tweet translated in the vernacular since he arrived the country for his five-day Apostolic visit from Jan 15 to 19. “Bilang Kristiyano, miyembro ng pamilya ng Diyos, tinatawag tayo upang
hanapin at paglingkuran ang lahat ng mga nangangailangan,” the Pope said. He earlier posted the same tweet in English: “We who are Christians, members of God’s family, are called to go out to the needy and to serve them.” In his past Filipino-cen-

DAVAO CITY - The Panabo City Social Welfare and Development Office PCSWD) recorded some 550 cases of violence against women in 2014 indicating an average of 1 to almost 2 women victims per day. However, social welfare officials downplay the figure, saying, “It is not alarming but rather a positive indicator that the women in the city are being empowered after years of implementation of Republic Act No. 9262 or the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act of 2004.” Panabo City Officerin-Charge (OIC) CSWD officer Jeannette Lamoste said the higher number of VAW cases compared five years ago indicated that the women are coming out from their closets.

DAVAO CITY – The seventh most wanted person in Laak municipality of Compostela Valley province was apprehended by the authorities in a shoot-out Thursday night in Tagum City. The suspect was identified as Mario Tanodtanod, Jr. aka Jomar or Jojo. He has a warrant of arrest for violation of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 issued by Judge Hilarion Clapis, Jr. executive judge of Regional Trial Court Branch 3 in Nabunturan, Compostela Valley. DAVAO DEL NORTE -The continuing registration of voters will be suspended in February to give way for the Sangguniang Kabataan elections on February 21. Davao del Norte election officer, Atty Gay Enurables this morning revealed that the COMELEC now gets into preparation mode for SK Elections and that election officers are into information drive for the election. Enurables said her office takes focus on preparing for SK election “because there has been no advise for its suspension.
There had been series of efforts to suspend the SK Elections in the past but COMELEC still prepared for the eventual holding of the youth elections by promulgating COMELEC Resolution No. 9905 on October 21, 2014. Based on the resolution, the continuing registration, validation and updating of voters’ records will be suspended from Feb. 1 to Feb. 28 while the SK election day is slated on Feb. 21. COMELEC Resolution 9905 also sets the filing of candidacy on Feb. 7, Feb. 9 and Feb. 10 and
the campaign period from Feb. 11 to Feb. 19. Atty. Enurables said the filing of candidacy will be done at the COMELEC offices in the municipal and city levels but the casting of votes goes down at the barangay level. Meanwhile, COMELEC has set prohibited acts during the SK election period that will run from Jan. 22 to March 2 and even during campaign period, on the eve of the election and on election day. Northern Mindanao bids Pope Francis goodbye NORTHERN Mindanao–– The “People’s Welcome Committee” in Northern Mindanao is bidding Pope Francis goodbye, as he leaves the country today at 10 a.m. after a five-day visit to the millions of Catholic faithfuls in the Philippines. Catholic Filipinos here in Northern Mindanao join the several millions others in rejoicing the visit of Pope Francis, even as they described him as the “People’s Pope.” The “People’s Welcome Committee” opened here Thursday during the arrival of the Pope Francis and had a “peoples’ vigil” and daily programs until today, January 19, at the Freedom Kiosks, at Plaza Divisoria, Rev. Father June Mark Yañez, one of the conveners, said last Friday. He said that the people in the region appreciate the Pope’s sympathy of and solidarity with the Filipino people which truly radiates hope and inspiration to all, especially the poor, Yañez said. He said that Pope Francis has been a steady symbol of unity, reconciliation and dialogue with and respect for other faiths and religions around the world. It is no wonder that the people continue to embrace Pope Francis as the “People’s
Pope” and “Pope for the Poor,” given his pro-people and peace advocacy, Yañez said. He said that Pope Francis even declared the year 2015 as “Year of the Poor,” paving the way for the church to engage in open dialogue with and advocating for the peasantry, workers and all marginalized sectors. Yañez said that the Filipino people should, therefore, embrace the rare presence of the Pope and make it as opportunity of seeking his intercession so that the hopes and cries of our people will be heard, and more importantly addressed by the leaders of our nation. Support and protect small farmers and agricultural producers Lawmakers are proposing to provide farmers and agricultural producers with social support and protection to help uplift their condition, minimize their vulnerabilities, and empower them to maximize their contribution to the economy and society. It is high time. These heroes of our economy should be provided with essential support services in recognition of their vital role in the attainment of food security as well as their contribution to economic development. One of the greatest ironies of our times is that the country’s food producers are also the ones that are highly vulnerable to hunger because of poverty. Visit the poor rural areas and you will realize why. The absence of adequate social support and services for small farmers and agricultural producers exacerbate poverty conditions in the agriculture
sector. It also undermines the productivity and economic viability of the country’s food producers. The lack of adequate educational support, especially in the rural areas, limits the development of human resources and its potential positive effect on innovation and productivity in the sector. It cannot be denied than in our country, poverty is prevalent in the rural areas, especially among small farmers and agricultural producers. A 2006 report conducted by the National Statistical Coordination Board, which stated that among the basic sectors, fishermen and farmers are the poorest, with poverty incidences of 49.9 and 44 percent, respectively. This indicates that close to half of the population in these basic sectors is considered poor, the lawmakers argued. Now it is high time for the government to do something

The absence of social services, particularly pension support for aging farmers, heightens vulnerability of stakeholders in the sector and serves as disincentives to continued agricultural production. After decades of farming, millions of our poor farmers do not have anything to fall back on in their twilight years. It is no wonder then that many of their children are no longer interested to continue farming and producing food and other agricultural products for the country. “Every farmer must have access to agricultural scholarship for at least two of his or her children, provided that the courses undertaken by the latter are included in the list of courses and trainings identified
by the Department of Agriculture (DA) as related or relevant to agriculture and agricultural production,” the measure states. The scholarship should cover the cost of tuition fees and books plus a minimum subsistence allowance. Under the bill, children of farmers could avail of the scholarship provided they meet the regular entrance requirements for students as provided by state universities and colleges. The bill also provides a monthly pension of P1, 500 for farmers aged 65 years old and above. The value of the monthly pension should be adjusted for inflation every three years. The bill mandates the DSWD, DA, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to develop the guidelines for implementation of the scholarship and pension program. A private jet that ditched last Saturday afternoon at the Tacloban airport, while attempting to take off, was carrying cabinet members. It turns out that the government rented the VIP aircraft to accommodate the cabinet members simply to become part of Pope Francis’s party. How much was the rent of the private jet is not a question. But, why the cabinet members are there to follow the Pope is a question. Perhaps, the cabinet members were there to make sure that the Pope is safe. We were thankful ‘though that the cabinet members, led by Executive Secretary Pacquito Ochoa were safe. Many believed that it was

Release of 3 Surigao cops held by NPA faces further delay
BUTUAN CITY – It looks like the release of three policemen from Surigao del Norte who are being held captive by the New People’s Army will be delayed further after the Caraga Regional Peace and Order Council refused to give in to the demand of the rebels for a troop pullout in the province. Butuan City Mayor and RPOC chair Ferdinand Amante said the council will wait for instructions from President Benigno S. Aquino III regarding the demand by the NPA as a precondition to the release of the captives. “We also have to consult the military and police on this matter,” Amante told reporters after the RPOC meeting held at the 402nd Infantry Brigade in Bancasi, Butuan City on Tuesday, Jan. 16. The National Democratic Front said last week they are putting on hold the release of PO1 Democrito Bondoc Polvorosa and PO1 Marichel Unclara Contemplo of the Alegria Police Station, and PO1 Junrie Amper of the Malimono Police Station. NDF Mindanao spokesperson Jorge “Ka Oris” Madlos said the military and the Surigao del Norte provincial crisis committee failed to reciprocate their unilateral ceasefire that would have set the release of the captive policemen. Madlos alleged that military operations continued in Surigao del Norte despite the government’s declaration of suspension of military and police operations from Dec. 19 to Jan. 19, the last day of Pope Francis’ visit in the country. Maj. Gen. Oscar Lactao, commanding general of the 4th Infantry Division, denied
Madlos’ allegations saying they are following strictly the instructions that no military operations would be conducted for a month in Surigao del Norte. Lactao said he was surprised by the latest statement of the NDF since the release of two Army soldiers in Bukidnon last Dec. 26 did not require a pullout of their troops. “Why don’t they just release the policemen? They can leave them anywhere to be picked up by the Surigao del Norte crisis committee,” he said. Last Jan. 7, Surigao del Norte Gov. Sol Matugas wrote to 402nd Infantry Brigade chief Brig. Gen. Kidnap-for-ransom-group leader falls in Zamboanga Sibugay

AMBOANGA CITY -- The police arrested a suspected sub-leader of a kidnap-for-ransom-group (KFRG) implicated in the kidnappings of two foreigners and three Filipinos here in the region, an official announced Saturday. Senior Supt. Roberto Roy Bahian, Zamboanga Sibugay police director, identified the arrested suspect as Ayub Enriques, the alleged sub-leader of the dreaded Barahama Alih KFRG based in the
province. Bahian said that Enriques was arrested around 9:20 a.m. Friday at his residence in Barangay Tenan, Ipil, the capital town of Zamboanga Sibugay province.

Poverty pushes ‘willing victims’ to illegal recruitment DOLE-9 chief
Zamboanga City - - “Many Filipinos still fall victims to illegal recruitment,” said Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Regional Director Sisinio Cano in a press conference held here recently. “Hirap pa rin ang ating bansa (our country is still poor),” he said explaining that poverty drives people to easily be potential victims. In spite of several government-led advocacy drives against illegal recruitment and human trafficking warning people of the repercussions, many are still victimized. “There are willing victims,” Cano pointed out, adding that their optimism to earn possibly more than they can locally is what drives them to take the risk. Only this month here in the city the authorities have rescued four people allegedly illegally recruited from Cagayan de Oro City to work as bar girls. However, the suspects are now being
held by the local police. Thousands have already fallen victims to illegal recruitment and human trafficking, and the city has been used as a jump-off point by many recruiters. Reports say that the victims come from other provinces, cities and municipalities not only in Mindanao but in Luzon and Visayas as well. Stories from the victims themselves - including women and minors - reveal the inhumane treatment they receive from the “employers.” Many of the victims were brought to Malaysia and from there to other countries as far as the Middle East. Many women have reportedly been made as sex slaves. The Philippines has retained its Tier 2 status for the last four years in the Global Trafficking in Persons (GTIP) Report issued by the United States Department of State in 2014. It is true that education is a very essential matter that holds the kind of future for Filipino children. Unfortunately, not all are given the benefit to finish higher educational level or even the chance to attend school. Department of Education is continuing in its advocacy in promoting education, wherein all Filipinos can have the chance to avail of successful life through education. Greater Opportunities! Education is another program created to bring advocacies on education reform closer to Filipino people. It is one strategy designed by education department in order to provide “education for all.” In realizing this, Department of Education sought supports from Philippines Business for Education (PBEd), Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and United States Agency for International Development (USAID), believing that collaboration among them would result in improving access and quality basic education.
This advocacy has long been started. It further aims to address the need to inform and engage the general public and its internal stakeholders in its mission in providing Education for All in the Philippines. There are three prime components focused in the program. These are curriculum enhancements through K to 12 Basic Education program, provision of sufficient resources to eliminate basic education input gaps and improvements to quality of teachers and teaching. Promotions has been made to further campaign GO! Education and gain public involvement. There are mall exhibits being done, media exposures and as well online campaigns through social media. Education is not just something that a child should have. It is already entwined with meanings like hope, ambition and better life. Every poor family is hoping for a better life and their only hope could be their ambition. Further, education is one right of a Filipino child and thus, he deserved to be educated for education is the best possible key in opening greater opportunities.

WCCS-SPEd PLAYGROUND…. A DREAM COME TRUE!.... By Cynthia V. Yanez
CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS (CSNs) will finally take their fleet to better education and trainings through the use of a newly constructed facility – “School playground”. This facility will really bring them joy and develop their skills to keep moving onwards to holistic development. Thanks to the few individuals who have visited the school and made all these things possible for the school children with special needs. It was, indeed, our first time in the WCCS – SPED program to receive such huge project supported by the private stakeholders. They’ve worked hard to provide what our SPED children deserved. The said project was proposed and initiated by Ms. Joanna Ruby R. Lago, SPED Grade-leader of the said school on January, 2014 because we felt the needs and demands of the special children and we believed that “schooling is fun” and children learn well through play. Eventually, after few meetings with the significant persons involved the project proposal was approved and supported by the parents, teachers and the School Principal Ms. Cynthia V. Yañez. We thanked God that our private partners took the challenge and
made things possible. To generate funds, the Inner Wheel Club, CDO, our major contributor, iniated the “Fun Run/Walk with the Children with Special Needs” last June, 2014 which was also supported by the Rotary Club of West, CDO. The guests during the big event were the West City Central School Special Education pupils, parents, teachers, administrators and some teachers from the school regular education. Other participants of the Funrun were members officers and members of Inner wheel and Rotary clubs, their relatives and friends and other generous and active stakeholders of the school. There were approximately 200 adults and kids participants who run for 1K & 3K distance around the Morning Mist in SM. Finally on October, 2014 the playground was finished and turned over to the school for pupil’s use. The school administrators & teachers are very thankful to the ff. benefactors and donors: Brgy Capt. Gigi Go, Pres. Farrah Dongallo of Inner wheel club, CDO, Pres. Ramil Esguerra of Rotary Club of West CDO, Engr. This is what I have learned. As stipulated in RA 9155, the school head shall be both instructional leader and administrative manager. He has to create a team, a workforce to collectively do tasks the best service to our clienteles. He has to inculcate deeply into his minds and hearts the three important words that will guide him to the right path of leading- authority, accountability and responsibility. These three guiding words will help him to carry on his duties
as a goal setter to the mission, vision, goals and objectives of the schools. He creates an environment that is conducive to teaching and learning. He is an active implementer, monitor and evaluator of the school curriculum and accountable for highs learning outcomes. He develops the education progress and school improvement plan and offers educational programs, projects and services which provide equitable opportunities for all learners in the community. As an instructional leader, he has to introduce new and innovative mode of instruction to achieve higher learning outcomes. He has administrative functions, managing all personnel, physical and fiscal resources of
the school. He recommends the staffing complement of the school based on its needs. Encourages and establishes staff development. He has to establish school community networks and encourages the active participation of teacher organizations, non – academic personnel of public schools and parents – teachers and community associations. He will initiate programs and projects in accordance with existing laws and policies of the Department of Education for the purpose of upgrading teachers learning facilitators’ competencies improving and expanding school facilities and providing instructional materials and equipment. He also does related works functions as assigned by his superiors. This is a yoke upon my shoulders-if I will become o school head. I cater and cope with these
demanding tasks of a principal and family woman. This calls for a sacrifice. I believe that the passion in me will keep me burning more than the talent and knowledge can give. Maturity and wise decision are weapons to combat adversities in the workplace and organizations itself. A good relationship with my key players to educational services is of big help to influence them to work at their best. My self –discipline will create followership. As it is said, the best battle a man has won is himself. For being judgmental will create chaos and distrust. I should “assist” and short not “assess”. Assessment should be healthy not the assessment of failures. My professional and personal competence be my guiding light in leading.

In a purpose to elevate the country’s educational system, the current administration has approved the K to 12 program. This program has added additional years to the system schools had used to implement for so many years. K to 12 program consist of one year for preschool education, six years for elementary and another six for high school. In high school, there would be four years for junior high and two for senior high. To review, it could be remembered that kindergarten education became mandatory as part of the initial implemen-
tation of K to 12. The education department then began to revise the curriculum beginning with Grade 1 and 7 (formerly first year high school). Further, the revised curriculum for Grade 2 and 8 was implemented on school year 2012-2013, while those for Grade 3 and 9 and for Grade 4 and 10 were due this year and 2015, respectively. Originally, the curriculum for Grade 11 along with Grade 4 was supposed to come out in 2016 while those for Grade 12 and Grade 5 were due in 2017. However, under K to 12 flagship, President Benigno Aquino III decided to implement
the senior high school (Grade 11 to 12) a year earlier than scheduled as he wish to see the K to 12 reform through during his term. According to Department of Education’s (DepEd) Assistant Secretary for Planning Jesus Mateo in an interview with a national newspaper during onset of 2013, the original plan for Grade 11 nationwide is to commence by June 2016, but the President wanted half of the Grade 11 students to already start by June 2015. In the same interview, he said that 2014’s budget includes allocation for classrooms because for the use of first batch of Grade 11 students for 2015. There are so many feedbacks for this plan. There are many who approved and there
are also who made thumbs down. But one thing is clear: the Philippines is looking ahead. Thinking about the growing population and a budding economy, the demand for quality education is high, and making it high is the administration’s initiative. The earlier implementation for senior high school maybe “too early” to some. It is a fact that it would be another challenge for Philippine Education and education department, as well. But similar K to 12’s beginnings, it is not without challenges. Innumerable mazes may come before its implementation, yet Filipinos could just expect that, again, its purpose is to elevate the Philippine Educational System.

Education aims at developing the the totality of an individual. It does not only mold a person into future citizen who has good work and career but it also nurtures the development of the intellectual, spiritual, moral, emotional, physical, psychological and social dimensions of a person. Hence, an individual who is developed holistically through education would surely be an asset to the society and a significant element in building a strong nation. In this sense, education is considered a tool for empowerment, transforma-
tion, and progress. Thus, it is just proper that even the processes involving the delivery, access, organization or similar matters pertaining to education should be in order to push efficiency and effectiveness. The rationalization program of Department of Education is created for the same purpose - to push result-oriented and efficient services. The executive order for the rationalization plan served as guide in offering high kind of service delivery.The plan directs a thorough and strategic review on the operations and organizations of the executive branch. DepEd Rationalization Program is identified as a process-
oriented idea by providing specific functions to each office, division and staff which would prevent duplication and overlapping of roles. Under this program, bureaucratic and institutional reforms are being adopted through deactivating irrelevant functions, consolidating or merging duplicated functions and reinforcing vital functions. Hence, the program escalates agency performance through rationalization of service delivery, support systems, and organization of structure. There are perhaps negative views on the implementation of Rationalization Program, not to mention the delayed incentives of those who opted to retire, the

A country with a Tier 2 status receives millions of dollars’ worth of non-humanitarian and non-military aid to address human trafficking. “The national and the local government units are doing their best to address illegal recruitment,” Cano shared, citing several strategies including advocacies and information made available to the public. Agencies such as the Philippine National Police (PNP), Department of Justice (DOJ), Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and many others have teamed up to address illegal recruitment and human trafficking. Meanwhile, to avoid being victims, Cano urged the job-seeking public to verify if the recruiters are licensed and registered at the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency (POEA). “The POEA has a website, and people can immediately verify and see if a certain recruiter is listed there,” he said, pointing out that “if the recruiter is not in the list, then his status is questionable.” Interested jobseekers may log on to www.poea. gov.ph for more information. He said that the construction of the seven public school buildings varies according to the needs of each of the school as recommended by the DepEd.. Some schools also need additional classrooms and school buildings. The Indahag Elementary School needs an additional twostorey building with six classrooms, Rodriguez said. In Barangay Tablon, public elementary school there will have a new three-storey school building with nine classrooms, he said. Rodriguez said that the school building projects got its funding from the General Appropriation of the national government. According to Rodriguez, more public elementary school buildings would be constructed in other barangays in the city this year. He said that the second congressional district targets a total of 156 school buildings and classrooms worth P 189 million in 2015. Several members of local Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry and some members of the business community joined with mayor Moreno on the said foreign trip. The travel of mayor Moreno and party came after Harbin city mayor Song Xibin sent formal invitation to the city government in order to deepen the sistercity relationship between the two cities. Mayor Xibin likewise wanted mayor Moreno and the rest of the city delegation to witness the 31st China Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival, which cannot be seen in Cagayan de Oro. On the other hand, mayor Moreno is thankful and hopeful that the relationship ties between Cagayan de Oro and Harbin will grow stronger and deeper, especially on areas along business and trade, tourism, education and technological sharing on environmental protection and preservation. Exporters: BOC stuffing policy burden to MSMEs
T
HE Philippine Exporters Confederation, Inc. (PHILEXPORT) is asking the Bureau of Customs (BOC) to put on hold the imposition of its stuffing policy, expressing "serious misgivings" it could lead to graft and corruption. In a letter to Customs Commissioner John Phillip P. Sevilla, PHILEXPORT president Sergio R. Ortiz-Luis Jr. said exporters see several problems arising from the implementation of the rule, especially for micro, small, and medium-scale enterprises (MSMEs) that will "again be the victims." The BOC is implementing the stuffing policy, as mandated in
Section 16 of Customs Memorandum Order 22-2010, or the Revised Customs Operations Manual that was signed five years back. The order provides that Customs personnel be present when export containers are being stuffed with cargo. "While the BOC is merely reviving an existing policy that has not been implemented, we have serious misgivings about it, as it presents another opportunity for graft and corruption," said Ortiz-Luis. "Inspection may be random, but will still require signatories that pose situations for 'table certification' due to the administrative and technical costs and difficulties of implementing
this policy." Noting that inspection and monitoring of stuffing of containers needs tremendous resources "if the BOC is to do this well and corruption-free," the trade official pointed out that the bureau itself has already acknowledged it lacks these resources. The Customs Container Control Division which handles this task reportedly has only about 15 permanent staff and another 15 on call, said Ortiz-Luis. "This will be no match to the thousands of containers that are shipped daily," he continued. "Because the Bureau itself admitted to insufficient manpower and communications facilities for this
role, pushing this can only mean imposing another non-tariff barrier that will hurt our job- and dollar-generating capacity." In addition, the policy could bring about further shipment delays and rising costs, on top of what exporters are already experiencing because of the port congestion, the letter said. Moreover, exporters question if there are concrete guidelines governing availability of personnel for night-time, holiday, and weekend stuffing, or if a system has been set up to facilitate deployment of BOC personnel especially in the regions. They also ask whether a shipper will be compensated if a
shipment deadline is missed "due to a failure on the BOC's part." "Many shipments carry daily or weekly penalties in the contracts, as high as 10% on the first day of unauthorized delay. This would put many companies in the red, especially those producing lowcost products. This may result in many businesses that will close, leading to loss of jobs and livelihood," warned Ortiz-Luis. Considering all these challenges and difficulties, he reiterated: "In this light and until the economic benefits can be clearly identified, may we respectfully recommend the status quo prior to the January 5 implementation of such policy." IF you look closely at the east concourse of Limketkai Mall last December, you’d come across an art exhibit of a new artist – an artist who doesn’t belong to any known art group here in Cagayan de Oro. Curious myself, I decided to come close and glanced at the exhibit – it was an abstract art exhibit from a Cagayanon named Ryan Marc Arces. After some research, I knew that Ryan is an exseminarian. No wonder that most of his abstract acrylic on canvases deal with comprehending what life is all about. One painting struck me the most though. It is The Three Towers. According to Ryan, The Three Towers represent those who died, those who love and those who take the move to love during Yolanda. (He made The Three Towers in Christmas 2013 or a month after Yolanda.) “In memory of those who passed away, it will always be a matter of faith on where they are now. For those who survive, this painting will always be a reminder of hope – hope that there will always be a brighter side of life. And for those who take the move to show love,
this painting will always be a proof that we always have a choice. And we can always choose to show love and care especially to the needy,” Ryan wrote. Elsewhere, Ryan reminded the audience that they might not understand the meaning of the paintings at first glance. “But the thing is, you don’t need to understand their meaning. Just allow your creative nature to
connect with the colors and shapes that attracted you. These paintings had already served their purposes on the part of the artist during the painting process which is self expression. Moreover these paintings can serve as mirrors for the viewers – what they see and how they give meaning to what they see.” Ryan learned to paint by self-discovery and from an
online observation of John Beckley’s works. Emerging from the seminary, he is currently a Values Education teacher at Corpus Christi School. Marawi group aims for Guinness in paper boat racing MARAWI CITY -- Lanao dwellers gathered as early as 7:00 a.m. last Saturday, in barangay Raya Madaya, this city, to participate in a race to conserve one of the ancient lakes in the world--the Lake Lanao. The Paper Boat Race dubbed RANOW was organized by the city’s youngest barangay chair, Asmenah Manabilang Barambangan, to uphold and raise public awareness for the preservation and protection of Lake Lanao. “This is one of our ways to extend our message to the public to protect Lake Lanao by not dumping wastes on it, among others,” she said. The cause was supported by the young environmentalists and other environmental advocates, as well as local governments including the city, provincial, and Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm)
