SURIGAO CITY – Authorities here have launched a search and rescue operation for five fishermen from this city who went missing after Tropical Depression “Queenie” made landfall Wednesday. According to Geoffrey Gervo, station commander of Philippine Coast GuardSurigao, four minor fishermen from the island village of Danawan have been reported missing while a certain Poldo Gede, a fisherman from Barangay Mabua, still could not be found. The fishermen reportedly went fishing early morn-

took advantage of the busy activity of the soldiers in disaster preparedness for the typhoon Queenie that made landfall on Wednesday afternoon. Bureau of Customs becomes trade facilitator If the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act is finally passed, the Bureau of Customs’ orientation would change from a collector of revenue to trade facilitator. The Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA) has been approved by the House committee on Ways and Means on November 17. The passage of the bill may be welcome development, but it is still a long way to go before its enactment into law. The CMTA, or the Customs Modernization Act of 2013, will replace the outdated Tariff and Customs C ode of the Philippines (TCCP), last amended in 1978. There have been unsuccessful congressional initiatives to modernize the Code for the last 19 years. Custgoms Modernizastion Act of 2013 heralds a paradigm shift. It

WQith, the CMTA, Customs procedures will be simplified for the disposition, forfeiture and seizure of contraband

goods, but it will still enforce steeper penalties for illegal shipping practices. It would raise the “unreasonable de minimis value of P10 today to P5,000” so that incoming goods with a value of P5,000 and less will be exempt from duties. By re d ef i n i ng t h e roles of customs brokers, CMTA will democratize transactions. It must be noted that the Customs Bureau’s exclusive task to handle importation and exportation cases has already been abolished under the Revised Kyoto Convention (RKC). The CMTA will be fully compliant with RKC, to which the Philippines is a signatory. There are those who are not with the CMTA, however. Customs brokers are contesting the CMTA provision which allows importers and

exporters or their representatives to lodge transactions on their own, since this will do away with the need for the services of customs brokers. In othere words, under the CMTA, there will be no more business for customs brokers. Although it is not the sole solution to solve smuggling problems, iIt is hoped that the CMTA can minimize opportunities for human transactions and minimize discretion as it increases penalties for offenses. T h e g o o d n e ws i s there is much clamor for the passage of the CMTA, specially various business organizations which have assailed the outdated and conflicting customs and trade measures which hinder the free flow of goods. With CMTA, business would be easier for exporters and importers.

The ‘Bangsamoro’ Dream The struggle of the Moro people in Mindanao, particularly in the Northwestern and the Southwestern part of the island, has continued until today. There is no question that when the majority part of the islands in the Philippines vis a vis Luzon and the Visayas, prior to the conquest of the Spaniards, most areas in Mindanao have already a government system. The birth of Islam in Mindanao has precipitated the establishment of the sultanate, a feudal system where a Sultan rules over a vast territory with the people who are living within the territory as subjects of the sultanate. Karim Makdum, a merchant from the Persian Gulf, planted the ”Crescent Moon” in Sulu in the later part of 1380, almost 200 years prior to the birth of the Spanish instigated Christianity in the island province of Cebu. Islam has guided the birth of civilization of Mindanao to be at far with the development of other Islam countries in Southeast Asia. Ever since, the Islam converts in Mindanao have put up a strong resistance against all forms of foreign aggressors, no-

tably against Spanish and American colonization of the island. In fact, in fact, the Spaniards described the native of Mindanao as “Moros,” a description of “wild,” “barbaric,” and “untamed” people whose etymology has reference to the “Moors.” The Moors were African Arabic Muslims who attacked and ruled most of southern Europe during the Middle Ages. Spain had been an object of perennial attacks by the Moors until in the mid 1400. Perhaps, the Spaniards have the memory of the Moors recalled in the ferocity of the Molems in Mindanao who always fought tooth and nail against the Spanish colonizers some 300 years ago. It is the same aspiration of self-determination and identity that the Moslems of Mindanao today have been craving for. It is the obsession of the Moslems, though a minority group, to have their own form of government and justice system in Mindanao. However, while dreaming to be an independent community, the Moslem people still want to be part of the Philippines. It is this dream that gave birth to the

creation of the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) in the mid-80s’ – now the Moslems want ARMM to be replaced with the “Bangsamoro Homeland (Entity).” While the government has thrown its full support to the creation of the “Bangsamoro” through the approval of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL), there are still a lot of things to be ironed out. For instance, the issue of identity among the Moslem communities in Mindanao remains unresolved. Some Moslems are not comfortable with the “Bangsamoro” description. The Tausugs, the Maguindanaoans, the Maranaos and the other native Moslems prefer some other name than the word “Bangsamoro.” By the way, there are

about 11 million Moslems in the country today, the largest is in the ARMM with more than 3,000,000 followed by Region 12 – 2,000,000, Region 9 – over 1,000,000 and in Northern Mindanao – about 692,000. There are some proposed provisions in the BBL that have to be clarified – not simply clarified but should be convincingly clarified – so that the people in Mindanao, including the Christians, would embrace and accept the BBL in its entirety. One instance is the provision on “contiguous” provinces, towns, and cities which the proposed BBL wants to be part of the “Bangsamoro.” Some provinces like the Zamboanga Peninsula and the Sulu group of islands and Basilan are not inclined to be part of the “Bangsamoro Entity.” Indeed, there are small things that appeared negligible in the proposed BBL that should be seriously addressed before the “Bangsamoro Dream” would become a reality. Otherwise, the expectation of a grand and ideal “Bangsamoro Dream” of the future would turn out into a nightmare of broken dreams.

Catoto SURIGAO CIT Y – Although Tropical Depression “Queenie” is now out of Mindanao, a total of 750 sea vessel passengers bound for Cebu, Leyte, Siargao and Dinagat Islands are now stranded in the city’s two sea ports because of cancelled trips since Wednesday. As of noon today, the Philippine Coast Guard and the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) reported that 350 passengers are stranded at the Bilang-bilang Port while 400 more are stranded at the Lipata Port. Geoffrey Gervo, Coast Guard station commander in Surigao City, said that trips to Liloan and in San Ricardo, Southern Leyte; Dinagat Islands; Siargao Island; Cebu; and the islands of Surigao City remain suspended as of yesterday. The number of stranded passengers are expected to increase as vehicles from

ZAMB OANGA City Police on Tuesday said a World War II howitzer projectile was discovered by construction workers while digging on a village in Zamboanga City. It said the 155mm projectile was unearthed inside a school compound in the village of Taluksangay on November 24. The workers informed village councilman Barlec Jailani about the find who immediately called the police to retrieve the unexploded ordnance. Police said the projectile was turned over to the local bomb squad unit. Zamboanga was invaded by the Japanese Imperial Army during the war almost seven decades ago. Demand for housing units in Davao urban areas rise

AVAO City - The National Housing Authority (NHA) here vowed to build more houses in the region as the demand for housing in urban areas continues to rise the past years. NHA officer-in-charge for Region XI, Engr. Carolina Angel, said the rise in demand could be attributed to the increasing population in urban areas and influx of in-migration. She said that occurrence of calamities or disasters prompted people to leave their places of origin and relocate to the city. This is true, she said, when Typhoon Pablo hit some areas in Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental provinces.

“If they go to the urban centers most likely there are no available dwelling places for them, thus contributed to the increasing number of informal settlers in danger zones like near the river banks,” Angel said. She said the NHA’s role was to look at areas where informal settlers resided on unsafe grounds. When feasible, she said, NHA builds resettlement areas for this sector. “This is an ongoing task and we had been continuously building resettlement areas here in the Davao Region,” she said. While funds are not enough to address housing needs, Angle said NHA partnered with the local government units or the private sector developers

by providing funds for the development of a site at Php 12 million per project. The initial funds could go higher if the LGU has other projects of up to maximum amount of P36 million. She said that NHA is working on the housing projects in Kiblawan, Sanrangani Island and Sta. Cruz, all in Davao del Sur. Angel also said NHA assisted the Davao City government for the building of 150 housing units for those affected by the 2011 flood at the city’s relocation site in Los Amigos. Of the 150, she said, 50 units were completed while the remaining 100 remained under construction. In Davao del Norte

province, She said three projects were being built in the municipalities of Carmen, Braulio Dujali and Kapalong; while, in Compostela Valley Province site development is ongoing in the towns of Pantukan, Nabunturan and Maragusan.

NHA has also identified resettlement sites in Mati City and Banaybanay town with the LGU having the option of either develop the land or construct the housing units. Angel also said the housing projects for the personnel of the Armed Forces

of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police were in the pipeline. The project is for the construction of 750 housing units in Tagum City and another 750 units in Manambulan, Tugbok, Davao City. She said each unit is valued at Php 250,000. (PNA)

This ceremony recognizes the outstanding performance and doable efforts of our Local Government Units to address our plight in hunger and malnutrition. The challenge in malnutrition is one that we all share, I am amazed to find committed leaders and Barangay Nutrition Scholars with exemplary performance and dedication for nutrition improvement. I acclaim the nutrition stakeholders at various levels for the unwavering efforts in sustaining the implementation of nutrition programs for nutrition advancement of your constituents. The significant reduction of the prevalence of malnutrition in the region due to good governance as well as the empowerment of the communities on nutrition through constant nutrition advocacies, one on one nutrition counseling, promotion of community participation in nutrition planning and implementation makes us all winners and champions in nutrition. However, let us not sit on our laurels. We still need to strengthen our nutrition strategies such as promotion of good nutrition, conduct of OPT, periodic monitoring and evaluation to sustain better nutritional status of our children who will become our future leaders. As Chairperson of the Interagency Regional Nutrition Committee and Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator of the National Nutrition Council, I would like to thank you all for the selfless commitment and support to further improve our nutrition program in the region. Let us continue to invest for the betterment of nutritional status of our citizenry in order to have a more economically stable and healthy community. Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar Soledad Garcia is serving as the Barangay Nutrition Scholar for twelve years now at Barangay Baan, Km. 3, Butuan City. ROBNS Garcia initiated various innovative nutrition projects that are sustainably and successfully implemented in the barangay where she is serving as the BNS. One of the notable innovations she introduced is the project on “Food Bank” wherein extra produced from the community are generated, associated for and stored in a room in the BNS office and will be allotted for the food supplementation program for malnourished children. She also initiated the implementation of “Food Cents” project, a campaign to generate funds for supplemental feeding. The tin cans are installed in health center, barangay hall and strategic location where activities are conducted in the barangay. Similarly, BNS Garcia introduced other nutrition projects with the BNC which includes Plant to plate program, Pagkaon ko..Pagkaon mo. ROBNS Garcia ensures that family income will be augmented through income generating activities. She initiated the implementation of “Tabo Ngani sa Barangay” an annual festival conducted during Nutrition Month celebration, people from different puroks bring their produced to sell to the Barangay folks. The annual festival is also a venue to recognize the best crops harvested by each puroks. ROBNS Garcia also promoted urban gardening through utilization of recycled materials like plastics, tires and empty cans planted with tomatoes, pepper, onions, eggplant, okra and pechay. Some are placed and arranged in rows on slabs about 3 feet from the ground in front of the houses. These container gardens serve as ornamentals too. Other income generating projects for nutrition also includes floorwax making, tocino food processing and water lily slippers, among others. Concerned in the prevention of the micronutrient malnutrition in the form of vitamin A deficiency, iron deficiency anemia and iodine deficiency disorder that may affect the vulnerable group like the preschool children, school children, pregnant women and lactating mothers, ROBNS Garcia conducted a massive campaign on food fortification through the promotion and distribution of Sangkap Pinoy Seal Products and iodized salt with the assistance and support of the Punong Barangay led by Barangay Captain Gemma P. Tabada and members of the Barangay Nutrition Committee. ROBNS Garcia ensures that families with malnourished children are targeted and prioritized in nutrition programs and projects to improve their nutrition condition. Among the projects implemented are the “Gulay sa Bukid” a joint project of the Barangay Nutrition Committee, purok residents, Barangay Health Workers and families with malnourished children. ROBNS Garcia also actively participants in sectoral programs in the barangay which includes the Clean and Green and Beautification Projects of the Barangay. Environmental sanitation is promoted in the barangay through maintenance of cleanliness and waste management. Furthermore, ROBNS Garcia is also a recognized and respected leader in the community. She had been a recipient of various trainings and continuing education activities. These enable her to serve effectively as volunteer in the community. She also maintains good records keeping and documentation reports of activities and projects on nutrition with action photos. Her being systematic and organized as records keeper enable her to be recognized with outstanding performance. There are 2 major aspects that ROBNS Garcia could be proud of, one is her achievement in contributing to the improvement of the nutritional status of the severely underweight malnourished preschool children in Barangay Baan. Her hardwork, industriousness coupled with moral support of her spouse and the trust and confidence of the members of the Barangay Nutrition Committee members and Barangay Council spearheaded by Barangay Captain Gemma B. Tabada motivates her to strive for excellence and remain committed in her duties as the Barangay Nutrition Scholar. Secondly, the minimal honorarium and incentives she received as volunteer BNS did not limit her to give her best. She is grateful for these blessings which sustain their daily living. As of CY 2013, the prevalence rate of malnutrition among preschool children in Barangay Baan is .98% while the current prevalence rate in CY 2014 is .58% ROBNS Garcia with the Barangay Nutrition Committee chaired by Barangay Captain Gemma Tabada aim for a total eradication of malnutrition in the barangay through collaborative efforts and implementation of sustainable nutrition interventions cost-effectively.

AGUSAN DEL SUR PROVINCE Regional Green Banner Awardee-2nd Maintenance (Provincial Level Category) HON. ADOLPH EDWARD G. PLAZA Governor Province of Agusan del Sur The Province of Agusan del Sur is this year’s outstanding province in the region in the implementation of nutrition program and also the recipient of the Regional Green Banner Award (2nd Maintenance) for provincial level category. This is based on the result of the Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI) for the evaluation period CY 2013 conducted by regional inter-agency monitoring team and the National Nutrition Council. Agusan del Sur being the biggest province in CARAGA continued its growth and development. Along with its development, is the advancement of nutrition program that caters to all population group including the indigenous groups in the province where Manobo, Higaonon, Aeta, Mamanwa and Bagobo inhabited. The indigenous group is also one of the priority target groups in the province for nutrition intervention. The impartiality in the delivery of nutrition and health services as far as geographically isolated disadvantage areas enable the province to deliver its services to the most needy population group. The strong leadership of Governor Adolph Edward G. Plaza being the chairperson of the Provincial Nutrition Committee exerted efforts and full support to achieve the reduction of malnutrition in the province while sustaining the nutrition program management through participatory planning, sectoral program implementation, periodic monitoring and evaluation, allocation of resources for nutrition and strengthening the Barangay Nutrition Scholar Program through provision of logistics and travelling allowance. The deployment of 364 Barangay Nutrition Scholars provincewide facilitated the delivery of basic health and nutrition services to identified households with vulnerable groups. The BNSs are instrumental in the effective and efficient implementation of the Health and Nutrition programs at the grassroots level. The province maintains its good performance in the delivery of comprehensive basic services thus contributed to the improvement of health and nutrition condition of the populace. The implementation of the Micronutrient Supplementation Program through distribution of vitamin A, iron, and multivitamins to all underweight and severely underweight pre-school children and low birth weight infants, pregnant women and lactating mothers reduces the incidence of anemia, infections, diarrhea, and malnutrition among children and mothers. The establishment of backyard garden provided food security to households. The province’s agriculture and related programs are nutrition sensitive. Livelihood programs were also implemented which includes banana chips production, daing tahay food processing, amakan weaving. These livelihood projects benefited the low income population group in identified areas. Aside from that, the province also promoted healthy lifestyle through its biggest loser campaign, a weight lost health gain contest among province of agusan del sur employees, there is also promotion on smoking cessation, and advocacies on Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos in all barangays. These advocacy efforts contribute to the reduction of the incidence of degenerative diseases among adults. The province is also supporting programs and activities on nutrition related emergency preparedness, mitigation and rehabilitation in order to respond immediately during emergencies and disasters. Other notable accomplishments of the province include the sustainability of nutri-village to rehabilitate identified malnourished children. There is also an implementation of infant and young child feeding program and the organization of community support group for breastfeeding in identified barangays. This is to strengthen the campaign on exclusive breastfeeding from 0 to six months and timely introduction of complementary feeding while continuing breastfeeding from six months onward to ensure that optimum nutrition and health is given to a growing infant. Capability development among Nutrition Committee members at various levels on nutrition program management, food production, livelihood skills development, micronutrient supplementation, healthy lifestyle, BNS training, CGS training strengthened the nutrition program. There is also an integrated package of nutrition services in the school system through water and sanitation, supplemental feeding for wasted school children and integration of nutrition in school curriculum. With these interventions well in place, anchored on a strengthened nutrition structure and human resource, the province achieved a reduction in the prevalence of underweight preschool children from 7.31% in CY 2013 to 6.17% in CY 2014. Through good governance and strong leadership of Governor Adolph Edward G. Plaza the quality of life of the people in Agusan del Sur will improve.

The Municipality of Socorro, Surigao del Norte is one of the tourist destinations in Caraga region. Its natural attractions are captivating and mystical. The famous Sohoton Lagoons where maze of interconnected clear water pools clasped by karst hills of almost uniform shape has some cultural importance. Tourism is one of the major activities in Municipality of Socorro where rock island formations are situated and natural waterfalls. It has also white beaches where forest is still intact and some borders are deep bays. The island is blessed with numerous Mangrove which gives protection from soil erosion and shelter to species. Environmental preservation is practiced in this productive island. The Local Government Unit of Socorro spearheaded by honorable Mayor Denia T. Florano whose flagship program directed to human development and sustainable environmental protection while maintaining agricultural production. Mayor Florano chaired the Municipal Nutrition Committee (MNC) composed of different stakeholders from government and private sector. The MNC ensures that nutrition programs identified and implemented will contribute to the improvement of the nutrition condition particularly of the vulnerable groups primarily the preschool children, school children, pregnant women and lactating mothers. Food production is one of the banner programs of the current administration through the Bio-intensive Gardening. Households backyard gardening was promoted and established to provide additional food to the family and augment family income through selling of extra home grown vegetables other than fishing. To ensure wide coverage of food production, the Municipal Agriculture’s Office distributed assorted vegetable seeds and seedlings prioritizing families with malnourished children. Reward system is adopted by the LGU to sustain the backyard gardening in every household. The maternal and infant health and nutrition are also prioritized to ensure good nutrition for both mother and infant. The preventive measures established for attaining good health and nutrition is through periodic supplementation of micronutrients specifically vitamin A and iron with folate for pregnant women. This is integrated with nutrition education among mothers with young children, pregnant and lactating women through Pabasa sa Nutrisyon an interactive approach for nutrition education, Infant and Young Child Feeding counseling session and the conduct of symposia highlighting topics that promotes healthy lifestyle and good nutrition. The distribution and delivery of services is made possible through the assistance of the front line workers in every barangays, namely, the Barangay Nutrition Scholars and Barangay Health Workers. Livelihood projects and income generating activities is implemented like animal dispersal, financial assistance in the form of soft loans and money lending through eligible cooperatives and association in the barangays. This activity is closely monitored by the concerned sector for sustainability and replication to other barangays. A capability development is also conducted among health and nutrition workers at the municipal level and barangay level to equip them with pertinent knowledge on health and nutrition for effective delivery of services and implementation of programs. On the other hand, periodic monitoring of growth among the preschool children is regularly conducted particularly among underweight preschool children to monitor their nutritional status. The concerted efforts of the Municipal Nutrition Committee led to the rehabilitation of underweight preschool children which accounts to only 4.43% prevalence rate for CY 2013. The improvement of nutrition condition among the malnourished children through collaborative efforts of the Municipal Nutrition Committee and allied sectors enable the municipality to achieve the Regional Green Banner Award for the evaluation period CY 2013. For the municipality of Socorro, Surigao del Norte the challenge of overcoming malnutrition can be overwhelming but with team work and community participation, dedication and commitment among the Municipal Nutrition Committee through the leadership of Mayor Florano there is no barrier that will keep them from achieving their goal of a healthy and well nourished populace.

Keys and certificates were then distributed to the families to officially identify them as beneficiaries of the program. “These houses send the message that indeed, there is light at the end of the tunnel,” said Mayor Celestino Martinez. “These homes provide a start for these families- a new beginning.” He also thanked the Sy family, the Fernan family who donated the land, and “all those who worked hard to make this dream come true for the beneficiaries of the project.” Governor Davide thanked the SM Group for partnering with the local government unit in giving not just houses, but a village to the community. “Now I can say that Bogo City has risen. Life goes on and we are determined to bring the northern part of Cebu to full recovery.” Secretary Panfilo Lacson, on the other hand, was happy to note that, “SM followed the standards with the structure of these houses, and we are classifying these housing units as permanent shelters because they followed the 250 km per hour wind resistance. Each of the 20 x 23 square meter houses is designed to exceed the requirements of the Building Code and mandated standards, each house can withstand the winds and strength of a Category 5 super typhoon without any major material damages. The village has utilities, basic amenities like streetlights, community center and basketball court. In addition to its disaster resiliency features, the houses will also have heat resistant painted roofing to help lower interior temperature and increase energy efficiency. The turnover ceremonies brought a lot of joy to the beneficiaries. Ernesto Orque, who works in a fishpond, luckily saved all his ten children but lost his wife during

the typhoon. They lost their home, too and for a year lived with friends and neighbors. Ernesto thanked SM for “providing my family a new shelter and a new hope to pick up the missing pieces of our lives. Eufrecina Tepait and her family lived in a shanty and lost hope after the typhoon badly damaged their house. After we learned that we are one of the beneficiaries of the housing project, our hearts leaped with joy,” said Eufrecina. After the program, donors were able to meet with the different beneficiaries who were all survivors of the super typhoon. Families thanked the donors for the early Christmas gift they received. Among the very generous donors present were Ramon Aboitiz Foundation President Robert Aboitiz, Rotary International Past District Governor Ed Chiongbian, and Bernie and Alice Liu of Golden ABC. Also present were FCB Manila’s Nikki Diyco, Jun Young Bang and Tony Park of Tony and Jackey Beauty Salon; as well as executives from the SM Store, Watsons, SM Appliance Center. Also present were USEC Presidential Assistant for Rehabilitation and Recovery Danny Antonio and SM Supermalls President Annie Garcia. The village’s streets are named after the major donors –Fernan Street, Acre Aircon Street, All Around Street, Asya Design Street, SM Appliance Street, Watsons Street, Boysen Street, Rotary International Street, and Paul Harris Street. British model David Gandy, also a donor, had the street named after his grandmother Doreen. The SM Cares Housing project is fully privately-funded by SM, its business partners, stakeholders and by the communities it serves. The SM Cares Housing Project is on top of the P100 million SM has already committed to rehabilitate areas hard hit by super typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda in the Visayas.

CIC honors its graduates T

he Culinary Institute of Cagayan de Oro (CIC) as the First Culinary School in Northern Mindanao, maintains a curriculum at par with international standards and offers numerous class schedules to suit a student’s time preference. With a commitment to help its students complete a Diploma in Culinary Arts with Holistic Nutrition and/ or a Diploma of Applied Science in Baking and Pastry Arts, successful CIC graduates have been recognized to easily secure job positions in their chosen field or set up business. At best, CIC holds Graduation Ceremonies twice a year and this year was its 6th Graduation Ceremony. Culinary and Baking students would be able to graduate and receive their Diplomas when they comply with the requirements. Students must attend and pass all of their classes, join seminars, successfully complete On the Job Training at service establishments within the country or abroad, and pass the most anticipated finale to

qualify for a Diploma upon Graduation. Yes, the journey might be long and rigorous but the students’ hard work becomes worth the effort when they stand on stage and present their Diploma to the world. The 6th Graduation Ceremony of CIC was held on November 8, 2014 at the Mallberry Suites Business Hotel. Families, friends, Chef Instructors, Administration, Faculty, Staff and a Guest Speaker were all present that afternoon. Prior to the Ceremony was the Baccalaureate Mass handled by Rev. Fr. Christmas is one of the most anticipated times of the year. A time for celebration; reunions, time for giving, and sharing. Most Pinoys look forward to and even start to celebrate the Christmas season even before the month of December (September or October). If you’re working, it is expected that you will receive the mandated 13th month pay aside from your Christmas bonus— depending on how generous your company is. The one that will set your financial status in the future is dependent on what you do with the extra income you’ll receive. The sad part for some is that, instead of using the bonus to make their life easier, it just made their life harder and even more complicated. Some even have loaned money in advance because they can’t wait for their bonuses. This is one of the worst financial practices that anyone can have. In other words, they’ve already spent the money that they haven’t received yet. It’s like counting the chicken before they hatched. “But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first getting estimates and then checking to see if there is enough money to pay the bills?”

SAVE As the old saying goes, “It is not how much money you make, but how much you save.” If you make P100, 000 a month but your lifestyle costs to P120, 000 a month, then you will be living in debt and in lack. On the contrary, if you make P15,000 a month and living within your income, then you will be debt free and will also have savings. What do you think is the best option to take? Option A or B? I assume your answer is the same as mine, Option B. But how come some people would prefer to take option A? You make more and you have the power to buy more. As your income increases, your expenses increase too! As your salary gets bigger, your standard of living gets higher also. You make less and you have less opportunity to buy more. wenty-one-year old Nikka Florence Javonillo has quite an impressive resume in the entertainment arena. She was third runner-up in Miss Teen Kagay-an 2011. She used to emcee in various Rotaract and Sangguniang Kabataan events. She used to host her own weekly magazine at Magnum Radio 99.9. She used to sing and compose songs and even released an original music video. But now, Nikka is in a different arena – the kickboxing arena. This red-haired Civil Engineering dudette from Xavier University initially

started as a swimmer during her Sacred Heart of Jesus Montessori School (SHJMS) days but shifted to kickboxing in sometime in 2012. Initially, it was a form of de-stresser, a hobby and a sweaty exercise combined. “At that time and even until now, sikat man gud ang UFC. Ug mao pud nag ako na-tripan so here I am,” Nikka quips. But Nikka and her chums from the Xavier University Mixed Martial Arts Association (XUMMA) decided to up the ante and form their own gym. Gladiator MMA was born and it is now a drop

zone for MMA enthusiasts from Xavier University as well as Nikka’s buddies from the Rotaract Club of West Cagayan de Oro. So how does Nikka spends her daily routine now beyond her engineering studies? First, she does an hour of warm-ups such as sit-ups, crunches, leg raises, planks, cardios and plyometrics. And then the real deal starts – two hours of kickboxing with trainers Victor “Gladiator” Torre (for which the gym was named) and Perkins “Predator” Calixto (an import from Iloilo pirated by Gladiator MMA). So what did Nikka

earn from kickboxing? “A firm body but most of all, the values that I have gained – discipline, pride and boosting self-esteem. Unsaay kaya sa lalaki, kaya pud namo mga girls,” she says. Is Nikka ready to be the next Gina Carano of CDO? “Layo pa na, that needs a lot of intensive training. For now, I am happy where I am,” she adds. That includes inviting more young MMA enthusiasts

from Cagayan de Oro to check out her gym located at Chaves-Capistrano. Indeed this lady will go places. In 2011 during the Miss Teen Kagay-an pageant, she said, "I am joining this contest because I want to represent our Barangay as their youth role model.
