Comelec prepared for SK polls on Feb. 21

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Cagayan de Oro City is now prepared for the February 21, 2015 Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) special elections.

City Comelec Officer Palmer Palamine said the Comelec will suspend starting February 1 the registration of new voters for the 2016 local and national elections to give way for the month-long SK elections.

Palamine said the local Comelec has already tapped the services of the Department of Education (DepEd), the local government of Cagayan de Oro, and the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo).

During the SK elections, reshuffling of Comelec officials is prohibited.

Candidates can submit their respective Certificate of Candidacy (COC) starting February 7 and will end on February 10.

The campaign periods are scheduled from February 11 to February 19.

On the eve of election on February 20, the liquor ban will be in place and implemented by Cocpo.

ZAMBOANGA City––It was supposed to be a drug buy-bust operation, but aside from confiscating suspected shabu or methamphetamine hydrochloride police also said they seized bomb-making components and guns.

Common barriers to successful classroom communication

Learning depends on how one absorbs the information and how it was delivered to him. It is much the same on a theory on communication where sharing of message would be successful after the receiver received and understood the message.

In a classroom situation, learning is highly dependent on how intently the student listens to his professor and how the professor delivers the lesson, as well.

According to a website of Skills You Need, an online portal that discussed on developing human skills, there are various barriers of effective communication. These are commonly observed to listeners which include school settings.

Using of jargons can be problem for successful communication between students and teacher. Jargons are technical terms that are rarely used in everyday conversation. Listeners may find these unfamiliar or vague, preventing them to understand sentences or statements mentioned in the discussion. Thus, it is very important for a teacher to define particular terms before proceeding to her lesson proper.

Emotional barriers and taboos are also barriers. In this kind, a student find it difficult to express his emotions and personal opinions in front of everyone in the class. These barriers can be observed mostly during recitals. The main reason is due to tense and stage fright filling the person.

Taboos can also cause the same worry. In here, a student felt that he is avoided to speak about a

topic because there are limitations.

The lack of attention can also be a barrier to successful listening. In this kind of barrier, a student may lost his interest for the lesson, or he may find the speaker to be irrelevant.

Another is the differences in perception and viewpoint. In the classroom setting, a misunderstanding may arise between the teacher and student because of differences or clash of opinions. In another words, what a teacher believes as right may not be favorable to the student or vice versa.

Physical disabilities such as hearing problems or speech difficulties would also be a problem in a conversation. The teacher, in this situation, would not be successful in delivering his lesson because the student cannot hear it properly or perhaps, the student cannot understand him due to his speech difficulties.

Physical barriers including misunderstanding of non-verbal communication are another common barrier to an effective communication in the classroom.

These will appear when the student failed to see the non-verbal cues such as gestures, posture and general body language which make lesson delivery less effective.

Learning is not just sharing the lessons but also on how the teacher presented and shared, and as well on how critically students have absorbed these lessons. Afterall, successful learning, in order to be realized, sender and receiver should be participative. In addition, detecting common problems and giving careful measures are helpful ways in improving teacher-student interaction.

City Council approved the 2015 annual budget with the “interest of its constituents, especially the poor, in mind.”

“It’s not a zero budget for Philhealth,” said Acenas saying the City Council alloted P42 million for Philhealth’s Point of Care program, higher than the P16 million being requested by the executive department.

The amount will be able to benefit 17,500 poor families who will be hospitalized, The Power reported.

Contrary to the black propaganda going around that the City Council provided zero budget for Philhealth, Vice Mayor Acenas said the POC is a new

program of Philhealth for the automatic enrollment of indigent patients upon admission to a government hospital.

“I believe Philhealth launched this system to better serve the poor and to ensure that every poor Filipino is given the health care they need when they need it,” he stressed.Under the system, qualified indigent patients are automatically enrolled on the spot in the Philhealth upon admission to a government hospital.

The patients and their qualified dependents will also have Philhealth coverage under the POC, said the vice mayor.

“When they need it, it will be there. Philhealth came up with this system and we are fully supporting it,” he added.

Under Philhealth Circular No. 0032, 2013, all DOH-retained hospitals are required to mandatorily implement the program, said the vice mayor.The patient will be covered by Philhealth for the whole year at an enrolment cost of P2,400, like other regular members, he added.

He said the City Council noted that not all of those enrolled in the Indigency Program Insurance of the city government were able to avail of the program in

WAR AGAINST INNOCENTS We are still living in a world of awe-inspiring development, but nonsensically of terrible evils. We are still living in a world held captive, deceived into living its captivity.

For thousands of years, we lived and we are still living with crime and discontent, fighting and terrible wars. Every day, killings in every part of the world are increasing. Warriors go and fight, prepared to kill and be killed with no fear.

In the forests, in the streets, in the mountains and in the valleys, every where, a lot of them are found dead. Bodies - even mutilated. In the rivers and the oceans, a lot of them are found floating, if not eaten by hungry sharks. We are living to see kidnappings, bizarre battles for so-called religious or other freedoms.

Sad to say, but there will be wars and killings because

the superpowers are in a race to put as many weapons as possible into their allies’ hands. The arm producers are urged and encouraged to produce more weapons and explosives.

As the Great powers never stop intervening in these small countries’ affairs, there will be more casualties. Isn’t it much better for them to help Third World countries economically

than supplying them with weapons, teaching them how to use these and kill each other?

How many more lives that are innocent shall we still find in our surroundings? How many more should ask questions like, “Where is my husband?

Where is my son? Where is my father?” Killed in action in incredible patriotism?

We have to understand that the victim is the whole world, and this world cannot realize what actually happened to it. Innumerable government heads, political leaders, and advocates or spiritual dignitaries go on with their peace talks and peace conferences.

Kudos to them. Am I too much blue-eyed or naive again? No, I don’t think so.

That is it, because without these efforts and strains our globe would finally go up in flames. It seems again,

that we are just before that.

When will stability prevail in this world? During every mass or service, we do pray for peace and we greet each other for peace.

Are these prayers and greetings only lip services or do we really practice making peace by starting in our own homes with domestic harmony?

It seems that our Mother earth is in a real physical and chaotic confusion, but don’t lose hope. “Ayaw ug pakawala ug paglaum!” Every religious person should pray and act for peace - no matter what kind of religious belief he or she is into!

Pope Francis and the Pinoys

The four-day visit of the People’s Pope, Francis, to the country brought to fore mostly the good and slightly the bad in the Filipinos.

Prominently displayed during the Pope’s State and Apostolic visit was the Filipino people’s indisputable piety that brings out in them an inexplicable goodness to obey every directive to ensure a hassle-free events with the head of the 1.2 billion strong Roman Catholic Church.

When the Papal visit organizers ordained that no umbrellas be used during the rain-soaked Tacloban and Luneta masses, everyone followed. All directives laid down by the organizers during every activity graced by the Pope were followed to the letter.

This behavior actually made many wonder why this was only displayed during the Pope’s four-day visit. If Filipinos can behave this way in four days’ time, why can’t they behave the way the way they did during those four days all throughout their life?

Just compare the traslacion during the feast of the Black Nazarene on Jan 9 where an estimated five million devotees trooped to Luneta to join the procession to bring the wooden statue of the Nazarene back to Quiapo church where hundreds got injured and two others died.

day afternoon had a bigger crowd but no untoward incident was reported simply because the people behaved accordingly. Why can’t the Filipinos have the same behavior in all events be it the Black Nazarene procession or a mass celebrated by the Pope?

If Filipinos could maintain such disciplined behavior in every event or occasion big or small, for sure we would have already moved to heights greater than expected.

What was displayed during the Pope’s visit was all goodness perhaps to reciprocate the Pope’s goodness. But the Pope is considered by the Roman Catholic Church only as Christ’s vicar. Why ca’t we not display the same goodness before Christ our Lord Himself even if He is with us only in Spirit?

Should we have a better behavior before Christ’s vicar but have a different set of behavior before Christ Himself? Is this not an irony?

Watching on television how the people displayed their piety during the open air mass at the Tacloban airport while the place was battered by typhoon Amang with Signal No. 2 winds was truly amazing if we compare it with the anarchy that happened there after Yolanda.

After the Pope’s visit, the overarching hope is that the Filipinos would be able to continually radiate the goodness they were able to radiate during the Pope’s visit. That their behavior during the four-day Papal visit becomes the prevailing behavior from hereon.

It would be a great disservice to the Pontiff who in his desire to give hope and inspiration even risked his life by flying to Tacloban while storm Signal No. 2 was hoisted over that place.

This he did just so he can fulfill his promise to meet typhoon Yolanda victims.

But if the goodness the people displayed in his presence will only be a fleeting one, it would amount to nothing.

Goodness, admittedly,

is inherent in every human being. Humans only change because of external factors.

But if one of these external factors is religious bigotry such as those displayed by some of our countrymen who believe that their religious belief is superior to that of the Roman Catholics, then it is very sad.

I could not believe that certain non-Roman Catholic Christians will have the gall to lambaste fellow Christians and go to the extent of even accusing the Pope with unprintable charges. But it happened. These so-called Christians, one was even a pastor of a Baptist church, actually behaved like the religious fanatics who’d kill in the name of religion.

This is f r ig htening because Jesus our Lord preached about unity among humans but some so-called Christians with distorted understanding of their faith liberally accused the Pope of being this and that.

In his message, Gov. Villafuerte said the surfing capital of the Philippines meets the wake-boarding capital of the country.

“I am truly proud to announce the sisterhood agreement of CamSur and Surigao

del Norte. Together we can take advantage of our competencies and commonalities to benefit our tourism and economic programs. I love Siargao," Villafuerte said.

Meanwhile, Egay revealed that a hidden paradise for surfing enthusiasts can be found in Guian, Dapa which really has great waves.

He also said that Gov. Villafuerte enjoyed basking on the sunshine and exploring the wonders of Siargao through extreme ocean-sports almost everyday.

Senior High School program

The current administration aims to produce human resources that could be also recognized abroad. This is one of the reason behind the implementation of K to 12 Basic Education Program. It is believed that 12-year program is an adequate period of learning under basic education towards realizing such aim.

Thereunder K to 12 is the Senior High School (SHS) program. SHS is two years of specialized upper secondary education. In here, students may choose a specialization based on aptitude, interests, and school capacity. The choice of career track will define the content of the subjects a student will take in Grades 11 and 12. Included in SHS is the technical vocational education and training that upon finishing, a national certificate (NC I and NC II) will be given to students.

These national certificates will improve employability of graduates in fields like Agriculture, Electronics, and Trade.

SHS is planned to be implemented on 2016. Thus, various preparations have been done.

In a national governmentadministrated site, it is stated that 33 public high schools,

public technical-vocational high schools, and higher education institutions (HEIs) have implemented Grade 11.

These selected schools serve as tools for Research and Design program to simulate different aspects of Senior High School in preparation for full nationwide implementation in school year 2016-2017.

Teachers and classrooms have been also improved in numbers along with additional years of basic education. In 2012 for one, Department of Education has signed an agreement together with two consortia to construct close to 10,000 classrooms intended for SHS and other K to 12 levels students.

Further, K to 12 Guidelines are already disseminated to private high schools and other non-DepEd schools that wish to offer senior high school (SHS) under the K to 12 Basic Education Program.

This will serve as light before implementation takes place.

SHS, as one institution stated, is considered as “higher school” in which upon graduation, young people will be welcomed to lots of opportunities.

BJMP foils jail break attempt of ASG detainees at Zambo jail

AMBOANGA CITY – The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) has foiled a jail break attempt Monday by suspected Abu Sayyaf brigands detained at the BJMP-administered Zamboanga City Reformatory Center (ZCRC).

C h i e f I n s p. Ju l i u s A r ro, Z C R C w a rd e n , said Tuesday the attempt w a s foi l e d af t e r t h e y managed to confiscate three caliber .45 pistols and 140 rounds of ammunition delivered to a detained member of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG).

pistols and ammunition were concealed beneath two home-made concrete charcoal stoves that were delivered one after the other by three persons, including two women, around 11 a.m. Monday.

The importance of checking assumptions during class interaction

Each classroom in schools contains students having varying personalities. These people have different background and current situations, for one, reason teachers might develop good and bad assumptions.

For example, teacher assume that her students share the same experience as hers.

Teachers might fail to realize that they are using terms not even familiar to students making it less meaningful during discussions. It is because students might marginalized by the terminologies used.

Thus, before spilling the beans before the class, especially example situations to further explain a topic, the

teacher should see whether her example would not appear discriminating to students. This include checking if students share cultural and political perspectives with her, and also backgrounds, culture, religion, tradition, kind of family situations, academic preparation of parents, income level, educational background, such as her students be first-generation college students or the like.

It is important for teachers to be careful and check their insight before spilling in in the class. It is better for them to uncover and question their assumptions, because they can have a large impact on the way they interact with students, and hence, on their learning, resulting to a productive interaction.

Curriculum: The Heart of Educational Service

Curriculum is defined in various perspectives. It can be linked in our philosophy of what should the best curriculum be; but, to tap it all it only boils down to our very end, the learners.

Philippine Educational System has now faced and challenged by the enacted law which has paved way to a curriculum shift, the Enhanced Basic Education Curriculum.

Sooner or later I will be leading key persons to meet the challenges of 21st learners and be as will 21st educators.

For me leading is modeling. I will inspire them to always be abreast to changes and to keep on growing professionally. I will provide teachers’ training and continuously assess them for a sustainable outcome. I will encourage them to enroll in graduate studies. With my leadership I will show to them that I am learning too for we just cannot give what we don’t have.ICT for example which is a sphere in the NCBTS must be fully valued by the teachers and the rest of the domains which are outcome-based.

This signifies that we are now in the 21st educational system not to mention the K12.

Despite of technological revolution and change is prevalent; one stays constant is the educational philosophy.

Paradigm of education is still anchored on its goal of education. Its shift should be beneficial for the life-long learning of each individual. According to the progressivisms’ point of view, the world changes it emphasizes the concept of progress which asserts that human being are capable of improving and perfecting their environment.

It is possible then to embrace educational challenges in this fast-paced world .It takes to be adaptive and to reinvent schools for the 21st century. Looking into lens of

the Enhanced Basic Education Curriculum, its goal of education adheres to face the 21st century. This is the transformation of basic education to produce holistically developed learners who have 21st century skills and are prepared for higher education, middle-level skills development, employment and entrepreneurship.

21st Century Skills should be taught so that students and even teachers will be globally competitive, yet as educators we believe on the totality of a person. It should always be integration on values education for character development, the progressivism’s improvement and reform in the human condition.

Teachers should use teaching methods that will let students participate, cooperate in the teaching –learning process.

Teaching strategies the teachers should use will make students think and reflect critically and solve problems. They act as resource persons and guide and facilitate learning. The taught information will turn into knowledge and knowledge into wisdom.

School should create a culture of investigation that connects students the global village and that learning will prepare to real world. The students’ curiosity will be a bridge to a life-long learning and become innovative that they will continue learning even outside the four walls of the classroom.

In understanding the 21st century education educators will consider the prelude of reconstructionalism’s philosophy of education which contains two premises both applicable to this changing world. Thus, society is in need of constant re-construction or change, and such social change involves a reconstruction of education and the use of education in reconstructing the society.

An Effective Stress Manager: The Secret of a Good School Administrator

How can the school manager be effective? How equipped he/ she must be to handle stress?

School administrator, facing a lot of challenges and circumstances is inevitable. To be more effective in everything, one has to face the trials and surmount all the problems and manages the stress for fruitful results of the vision and mission of the school he/she is managing.

An effective administrator is the one who can handle and manage the school well. What about the stress? Stress affects worker’s satisfaction and overall happiness. What is stress?

Some acknowledge that stress is a phenomenon that must be recognized and addressed in various professionals, no one is exempted.

It is not easy to define the concept of stress. Usually it is associated with the less pleasant aspect of life (Sharp, 1977). Hans Selye (1956) defined stress as the non-specific response of the body to any demand. It was used as a substitute for anxiety, conflict

and emotional distress. To Bower (1984), it is any force that brings some changes in an organism for better or worse. There are many more definitions but their description equates stress with distress. The above definition illustrates that stress is the fact of life. We cannot escape from it anytime and anywhere. Without stress life means death. So, for living a better life we should understand it.

A good administrator should not focus on the stress he/she is facing just because of the burden and chaos of the school environment, but rather consider stress as a challenge in their daily confrontation with their administrative task.

School managers have to face with different dilemmas in dealing with their teachers, stakeholders and in carrying various administrative works. They have to handle their stress properly in order to work efficiently to the fullest.

Administrators should be an effective stress manager. As an administrator, one should build a great ability to be effective not only in handling stress, but also handling them in many ways.

MTB-MLE: For faster learning among students

Education is one main thrust that the government is prioritizing because of its ability to improve not just the number of workforce after a student graduates, but as well a citizen’s position in life and emloyability.

This is one of the reasons behind lots of development in Education sector in the Philippines. These developments is not mainly on system itself but as well its reach. The education department is determined to reach every single uneducated Filipino and introduce them the real beauty of obtaining knowledge.

For this aim, a lot of programs are created, including Mother Tongue-Based Multilinguistic Education. It is a program that uses mothertongue language in conducting classes for earlier levels of education, specifically grades one, two and three. Through this, improved learning among students would take place since mother-tongue is the best tool

in learning other languages such as English and Filipino which are mostly used in higher levels of education.

MTB-MLE is also helpful to mobile teachers in reaching out to those students that are living in mountains and in places faraway from the cities.

During delivery of lessons, a teacher will pronounce it in a way that it is standardized and appropriate for the thinking level of the students. In result, students will not be confused and will understand everything that the teacher has presented.

Having education is a bridge for better employability and development of one’s life position. Before all that, Education is first, a right, an utmost important thing that each single citizen in the country should obtain. The creation of various programs such as MTB-MLE is one effective strategy to reach out the unreachable.

DOT, 'Tapok 2015' organizers invite Kagay-anons to Canada

AGAYAN DE ORO -- The Department of Tourism here in Region 10 (DOT10) and the Cagayan de Oro Association of British Council based in Vancouver, Canada, are inviting Kagay-anons to "Tapok 2015" to be held in Canada.

Tapok, Cebuano for gathering, is an assembly of Kagay-anons living in Canada, the Unites States of America and other parts of

the world to bring in investment opportunities and build strong ties through festivities.

During a press conference held recently, DOT Regional Director Catalino Chan III said this year's Tapok will be held in Vancouver, Canada, from July 31 to August 2, 2015.

Chan said three objectives are set for the annual Tapok -- unite Kagay-anons who are in the US and Canada; discover business ventures, and increase foreign arrivals among the countries

involved.

Aside from the Tapok festivities, Tapok offers business matching and opportunities for participants to sell products and services, including real estate and insurance, among others.

Tapok was organized 20 years ago in North America for being second highest in tourist arrivals to the Philippines after South Korea.

Ann Gora of the CDO Association of British Council said organizers are expecting

300 people to come based on last event.

Tapok 2015 registrants are charged a fee of 135 Canadian dollars. And, application for visa is an individual effort.

As a tip to businessmen who may be interested to join Tapok, Gora says Kagay-anons abroad want four things on top of the many others: Retirement plans; investments opportunities; adventure where they can promote eco-tourism; and community involvement especially for the

World summit in UAE pushes for renewable energy growth ABU DHABI -- The World Future Energy Summit 2015 (WFES) was convened here on Monday, with representatives from over 900 companies worldwide, discussing the impact of low oil prices on renewable energies.

In his opening speech, Dr. Sultan Al-Jaber, United Arab Emirates (UAE) Minister of State, said the steep fall in oil price, which hit a five-year low, did not have negative impact on ongoing investments in renewable energies.

Egypt's president Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, who is on a two-day official visit in the UAE, said in his speech that his government plans to reform the policy of subsidiaries within five years in order to make Egypt "more competitive."

Sisi said his country was open for investments to double solar energy capacities in Egypt.

The Egyptian President called the UAE, a major oil supplier, an Arab state at the forefront of promoting renewable energies. The world's largest concentrated solar park "Shams one" was built here in March 2013.

According to WFES group event director Naji El-Haddad, the Middle East has renewable energy projects with a capacity of 37 Gigawatt in the pipeline which come into effect until 2020.

Another focus of the conference is water and energy in food security.

In its continuous aim to boost cassava production and increase farmers’ income, the Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office 10 (DA-RFO 10) through the Agri-Pinoy Corn Program kicked off this year’s series of trainings on Cassava Production Technology in Ozamis City, Misamis Occidental.

Attended by around 70 agricultural technicians from the local government units and farmer-leaders from MisOcc and its nearby province of Lanao del Norte, the training was conducted to further encourage the said group to be agents for the promotion and development of the cassava sector within Northern Mindanao. Jocylen A. Gementiza, Cassava Focal Person of DA-RFO 10, reported that the region managed to produce 601,289 metric tons of cassava in the year 2013. She added that although the region has produced a quarter of the country’s total output for the period, they should altogether act and adopt major strategies such as increase the area to be planted with cassava, increase farmers’ productivity and income, improve the quality of primary cassava products and reduce harvesting/ post-harvest losses and increase consumption of cassava as food to accomplish the region’s targets. Since diesel prices are now at P31.15, he urged the LTFRB to reduce the flag down rate from P40 to P30 and by P2.50 for e v e r y t w o m i nu t e s o f waiting time, and for P2.50 for ever y 300 meters travelled.

He also urged the LTFRB to reduce the fares and other taxi ser vices, such as GT Express and airport taxis by a proportionate and fair reduction in the interests of the taxi-riding public.

Acenas: SP not against increase in honorarium of day care workers THE City Council is not against the increase in the honorarium of Day Care Teachers of Cagayan de Oro. This was stressed by Vice Mayor Caesar Ian E. Acenas during the regular session yesterday in response to the request of Day Care Workers for the enactment of an ordinance approving the budget for a P2,600 increase in their monthly honorarium.

Day Care workers already received an increase in monthly honorarium from P2,400 to P5,000 starting June 2014 until December 2014, said Marites Cahiles, president of the Federation of Child Development Teachers in the city.

She requested the City Council to retain the increase citing reports this was not included in this year’s budget.

DISALLOWANCE Vice Mayor Acenas informed day care workers that the P2,600 increase in their monthly honorarium was considered by the Commission on Audit (COA) as a disallowance and the City Council had to act on it.

“Ang kadtong additional P2,600 didto gikuha sa Special Education Fund (SEF) in which naay disallowance sa COA,” he said, adding that the increase did not pass through required procedures.

“Nag increase sa inyong honorarium nga walay authority gikan sa City Council.

It is required by law. Because of that walay authority gikan sa City Council naghatag og increase didto gikuha sa Special Education Fund mao tuy gi disallow sa COA,” said the vice mayor.

He said if allowed to continue, day care workers will eventually have to pay or refund the amount, which the City Council would like to avoid.

“We are not against paghatag sa increase sa honorarium. Mosubay lang ta sa insaktong proseso ….” he stressed.

“We don’t want in the near future na i-disallow na pud sa COA. We don’t want in the future nga magtapal kamo …” he added.

According to Acenas, the letter request of the federation was already endorsed to the committee on finance and ways and means chaired by Councilor President Elipe.

He assured them that it will be calendared soon.

With the authority emanating from the committee, he said the City Council will then enact an ordinance authorizing the increase. In this way, he said this will be legal and recognized by all.

These elements have converged, assembling the captivating menu of digital short films for the seventh installment of Cinemagis festival under the banner of Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts (XCCA) of Xavier University.

XCCA director Hobart Savior has expressed his delight and gratitude for the development of filmmaking in Northern Mindanao through Cinemagis which serves as a platform for emerging filmmakers to showcase their talents and stories.

Cinemagis continues to grow in terms of the number of participating filmmakers and its audience reach.

Running on Januar y 21-24 at the XU Little Theater and SM Cagayan de Oro Cinemas 3 and 4, the event presents 4 professional entries, 9 student films and the critically-acclaimed films of the award-winning director Brilliante Mendoza.

From past conflicts to present issues In the professional category, each entry deals with a morallybaffling theme.

Set in Maguindanao at the height of conflict between the Philippine military forces and Moro rebels in 2008, “The End of War” by Joeromer Bacus chronicles the struggles of a family stuck in crossfire “they never wanted to be a part of.”

“May Bituin Din sa Umaga” by John Solomon T. Legara takes the audience to a modern take on the colonization in the Philippines and the nation’s strife for freedom. The protagonist of the story named Bituin Maglaya represents the Philippine resilience and dignity, and the film follows Bituin’s journey of finding her heroes or “lucky stars.”

Adrian Rey Banaag Manapil’s “Bagabag” (Apprehension) displays a suspense story about an accounting professor Grasya who is trying to forget her traumatic past while her friendship to Leonor is being tested.

“She [Leonor] entrusted her daughter Yzel to Grasya with a promise to send her financial assistance while she is working abroad—until an accident happened while Yzel was playing,” the film’s

excerpt reads.

Completing the list of films from the professional category is “Ang Lihim ni Natividad” (The Secret of Natividad) by Jasmine Limas.

During the 4th Cinemagis Film Festival, Limas’ “Carmen” won the Best Student Short Film and it had its international debut at the Yerba Buena Arts Center in San Francisco, California, USA. From bu l ly ing to def y ing stereotypes On the other hand, the student films this year offer appealing stor ylines as much as the aforementioned entries.

“En Pace” (In Peace) by Orpheus Nery takes us to a journey of a man who met a mysterious woman who seems to fill his void after the unexpected death of his wife.

“He is having fun when he sees people afraid of him but one nightmare will change his life and perspectives,” teases the excerpt of “The Bully has Awakened” by Harold A. Villegas, a Development Communication student at XU. This short film follows a transformational story of Ruben who is a bully yet he contends with making himself a better man.

“Ab ans a d a s a Hang i n” by M a r v e l o u s J. B e n c i o f r o m Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST) simply des crib es his f ilm as “ab out promoting peace in Mindanao.”

Brian Adam Salvador Anay’s “Tingki” chronicles the story of a young and aspiring ballerina “who has been leading a ‘jacketed life’ as a Muslim and who finally decides to fight for her dreams in dancing despite facing societal reprisals because of her religion.”

“A love story between Gab, a college student who supports abortion and Vanessa, a Subanen who is devoted to her conservative beliefs,” this is the storyline of “Grasya” by Geffel Lou A. Rodrigora.

Opposing beliefs will test their love as they go through some dramatic encounters.

“Across the Universe,” a film

by Megan Louise C. Hernandez is about “the choices we make in our lives and how we should deal with them.”

“Feeling Loved” by Greanne Mendoza is something the youth can relate to with the subject on the “acceptance in social media.” It is a movie about wanting to be “in”

on the new media. In desperation, the main character spreads lies about his life and goes the extra mile just to keep the ‘likes’ going.

Murder and intrigues linger in the film of Lucky E.dela Rosa’s “Emosyon” (Emotion) and it follows the tousled relationship of the characters Victor and Jewel.

Completing the roster of student films for the 7 th installment of Cinemagis is “Sangil” (Blame)

Cinemagis perks This year’s Cinemagis features Brilliante Mendoza’s award-winning films “Foster Child” and “Thy Womb” at SM Cinemas 3 and 4.

Thy Womb follows the story of a Bajau midwife (Nora Aunor)as she copes with her infertility while attending to the concerns of women in her nomad community. Foster Child, on the other hand, stars Cherry Pie Picache as a temporary parent to an abandoned child.

Admission to the screening venues only requires personal care items such as soap, toothpaste and sanitary napkins, which will be donated to the victims of Typhoon Seniang in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.

In addition, the festival offers a free film production design and editing workshop for film enthusiasts on January 22-23 at the XULT and an interaction with Mendoza at SM Cinemas 3 and 4.

The announcement of nominees will be held on January 21, and the winners from the student and professional categories will be declared during the awards night on January 24 at SM City Event Center.

Supported by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) through its National Committee on Cinema, Cinemagis is organized in collaboration with Xavier Science Foundation (XSF), Research Institute for Mindanao Culture (RIMCU), XU NSTP and SM CDO. Cinemagis serves as a springboard for filmmakers from Region 10 to showcase their stories. Since its inception in 2009, a number of films have already gone to other national independent film festivals and even in the international scene.

Sorry for being confused, if it’s day or night. Since we knew that the Pope was coming to town, so the delivery will be delayed, especially if the shipment will be delivered out of town. My team and I had no sleep last night to prepare the orders of #MONEYKIT. We know the value and the excitement of the people who are expecting their kits, to be on their hands the soonest possible time.

Minsan sa sorbang excited, hindi pa nga nagbabayad sa bangko, nag-eexpect na sila ng delivery.

My courier promised that they were going to pick up today by one.

So we stayed all night long and by miracle we were able to finish it before the appointed deadline.

Tuwang-tuwa kami dahil mission accomplished. It was worth the puyat; people will be happy to receive their money kit as we promised. But when the delivery truck came, the people in-charge refused to pick it up because of a technicality; na hindi daw kami nag pa book ng tama sa agent namin.

So they left without bringing the kits.

It was not our mistake, it was the short coming of the agent.

But once if things does not happen according to their plans and ways, they drop you and doesn’t even care what you feel.

Again, I go back to what God imprint in my heart; to my favorite line, “To every problem there is always a solution, if you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.”

Truly enough God answered through my Facebook friends and gave me a number to call. The good news was, the company picked it all up and is willing to do whatever it takes to bring the money kit to our clients the soonest possible time.

It was Life of Pi. I don’t know if many of you still remember the Ang Lee Oscar winner but when I watched Life of Pi at Limketkai Cinema in 2012 (yup they were still open at the time), it moved me almost to tears at how a stranded castaway teen came to terms while questioning his existence in the open ocean. I bet our victim-nurse was surely moved and inspired by the movie too. Maybe she even meditated and

contemplated on how to change her life for the future. Even the visuals in the movie were stunning. There was a scene where jellyfish covered the entire ocean, closely mimicking director Ang Lee’s concept of paradise. Our victim-nurse could have absorbed all of this. Then boom, harsh reality snapped back immediately upon emerging from the moviehouse. In those torturous moments while she was being raped, did our victim-nurse blame the Heavens for her ordeal?

Was she dismayed that what she immersed in the movie was fantasy only? We will never know.

DOT 10 supports 15th Tapok Kagay-anon International

The D ep ar t me nt of Tourism region 10 has vested its support to 15th Tapok Kagay-anon International, this year to be held at River Rock Casino Resort, Vancouver, Canada on July 31 to August 2.

According to regional director Catalino E. Chan III, the Department of Tourism has always supported Tapok Kagayanon International as it contributes to the development of tourism industry in the city of Cagayan de Oro vis-avis Northern Mindanao.

“Aside from this will unite Kagay-anons, this will also bring high foreign arrival rates to Northern Mindanao, as they will share our beauty and bounty to their foreign friends,” Chan said.

15th Tapok Kagay-anon

International is basically a social gathering of Kagayanons who work and stay abroad.

According to Mr. Benny Rago, board of director, Cagayan de Oro Associations of British Columbia, Tapok is about meeting once again old friends, neighbours, classmates, relatives and making new friends.

“Tapok is fun, very fun.

Now that it will be held in one of the healthiest cities in the world, Vancouver, for sure they will enjoy as the city of Vancouver offers a lot of exciting destinations they have never been into,” Rago said.

Further, stated in the official website of Tapok 2015, www.tapok2015.org, Kagay-anon International is a non-profit Kagay-anon association that offers

scholarships in Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental.

In fact, when typhoon Sendong hit the city in 2012, Kagay-anon International has shipped over a hundred containers of relief items and has sent cash to a total of US$ 120, 000, all coming from Kagayanons in North America, Australia and Europe.

On the other hand, according to Ms. Ann Gorra of the Cagayan de Oro Associations of British Columbia, Tapok also offers an avenue for businessmen to do business as there will be a business exhibit.

“The exhibit will offer businessmen unparalleled opportunities to present their products and services and will have face-to-face encounter with Kagayanons from around the world,” Gorra said.

“We are inviting real estate developers, life plan associates, fashion designers and many other businesses to exhibit and do business during the Tapok there in Vancouver.

There will be a lot of opportunities for them,” Gorra added.

“Tapok is not about politics, it is not about

religion, it is not about food but it is about seeing old friends again,” Gorra emphasized.
