2 dead in freak tractor accident

CAGAYAN de Oro City––The body of a missing woman who was killed by a tractor that fell from a bridge in Iligan City has been found.

Barangay Abuno councilor Eduard Laranio identified the victim as Anita Librado.

The accident happened last week when the tractor fell from the Submarine Bridge in barangay Abuno.

Librado’s companion, one Leonilo Mejorada, was also killed in the accident and his body was recovered the same day.

Librado’s body, however, went missing and was recovered the other day at the shore of barangay Poblacion in Linamon, Lanao del Norte.

Both victims were residents of barangay Tambacan in Iligan.

Dir. Igdon to PSA-Lanao del Norte: ‘Walk the talk’ in new Iligan office

ILIGAN City––The Lanao del Norte Provincial Statistics Authority (PSA) here, formerly the National Statistics Office (NSO), had the blessing of its new office with PSA 10 OIC-Regional Director Marilou Igdon as guest of honor last Friday (February 14) in Iligan City.

The new office of PSALanao del Norte is located at Barnuevo Building,Badelles

Extension, Palao, Iligan City.

Rev. Fr. Adam Bago of the Our Lady of Fatima Parish led in the blessing ceremony of the new office, which occupies portions of the ground floor and the 2nd floor of the Barnuevo edifice.

Mr. Osler Mejares, officerin-charge of the PSA-Lanao del Norte, said the new office is expected to provide effective services to clients and will redound to a better working environment among his staff.

The PSA- Lanao del Norte office caters to some 400 to 500 clients from Monday to Friday, Mejares said. “The bulk of the clients’ transactions is with birth and marriage records,” he added.

Aside from gracing the inauguration of the new PSA office, Dr. Igdon administered the oath of office to the new set of officers of the League of Civil Registrars and Personnel of Iligan City and Lanao del Norte, Inc. (ICLANOR) for CY 2014.

Sen. Aquino names Oro ‘Go Negosyo’ pilot area

CAGAYAN de Oro City–– Senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino met with various business groups here n Northern Mindanao, first in Bukidnon province and later in Cagayan de Oro City, last Saturday (Feb. 15) and presented Senate Bill No.2046, otherwise known as the “Go Negosyo Bill.”

Sen. Aquino said Cagayan de Oro City has been identified to be one of the four pilot areas in the entire country for the implementation of “Go Negosyo Bill” per recommendation from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

Senate Bill No. 2046 is an act promoting the reduction of poverty through the development of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Sen. Aquino told a group of businessmen in Malaybalay that the measure “aims to facilitate ease of doing business, push the growth of micro and small enterprises, create jobs and livelihood around the country, and hopefully achieve the inclusive growth that millions of our fellow Filipinos desperately wish to be part of.”

“The fact that the Philippines has grown astoundingly over the past three years is no longer news to us.

Since 2010, the administration of President Benigno

Aquino III has worked hard to institute fiscal reforms and anti-corruption measures that have led to robust economic growth, global investor confidence, and our recently earned investment grade ratings by Moody’s, Fitch, and Standard & Poor.

From being the “Sick Man of Asia” just a decade or so ago, we are now among the“Breakout Nations” and one of Asia’s “Rising Stars.”

“Today, we are second only to China in terms of growth,” Sen. Aquino said.

However, all this growth means nothing if we cannot create jobs, livelihood, and “mass employment” for millions of poor Filipinos. micro, small, and medium enterprises; unhindered access to inclusive finance; support for social enterprises through inclusive supply chains; the K+12 educational system geared towards enterprise development and job placement; and clear pipeline for the 4Ps program towards productivity.

“Underpinning all of these is the development of our micro and SME sector, which accounts for 99% of

all businesses in the Philippines and at least 66% of all jobs in the labor force. The numbers show that boosting the MSME sector will help us create more decent, sustainable jobs that can lift many Filipinos out of poverty. We also need to look at MSMEs as a pipeline for development, instead of seeing the micro, the small, and the medium enterprises in silos.

At its core, the Go Negosyo Bill addresses this current gap in government support systems, and by empowering and supporting MSMEs, which comprise 99% of all businesses in the country, it means

setting them on a pipeline for development. “Hence, this bill, is a “foundational” and necessary aspect of our country’s inclusive growth agenda,” the Senator said.

At the heart of the Go Negosyo Bill is infrastructure and support for MSMEs at the city and municipal level so that each local government is able to boost MSME growth and provide jobs and livelihood for their constituents.

Go Negosyo Bill has been designed to connect to and complement two existing laws: The Magna Carta for MSMEs and the BMBE Law. It deepens the Magna Carta for MSMEs by establishing Negosyo Centers supervised

by DTI in each city and municipality as a hub for MSME registration and development. Entrepreneurs of all sizes will know they have a partner in starting and growing their businesses, and getting access to the right kind of training, mentoring, and value chain linkages.

DOLE-Caraga releases P1.38m livelihood aid to 8 organizations

BUTUAN City--The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in Caraga released a total of P1,384,350 livelihood grants to eight organizations in what Undersecretary Rebecca Chato called a DOLE-DOST Convergence Program on TechnologyDriven, Resource-Based and Sustainable Livelihood.

In a ceremony at a local convention center here on Friday morning, Chato, assisted by DOLE-Caraga Regional Director Johnson Cañete, handed the checks to the beneficiaries “to provide livelihood assistance to poor, vulnerable, and marginalized workers and their families.”

National Achievement Test (NAT) Is It Necessary?

National Achievement Test (NAT) is an examination conducted annually before a given School Year ends. It is done to ascertain the educational performance of students achieved during the year. Students knowledge, skills and values are tested in different subject areas- Mathematics, Science, English, Filipino, HEKASI for Elementary level and Araling Panlipunan for High School. The test is administered by the Department of Education through the National Education Testing and Research Center (NETRC). The purpose is to find out the degree of achievement performed by the students in the entire country based on the Minimum Learning Competencies per level per subject areas.

The results will guide the de-

partment on what course to take appropriate to the findings gathered in the field. Furthermore, the test results are not only useful for the national educational personnel but equally useful for school administrators in the field and most importantly for the classroom teachers whose main task lies the success and failure of students performance in the classroom.

Achieving the MLC per school level, per subject areas are indeed a great challenge to everybody and to the stake holder/clientele. This is the reason why reviews, in dept teachings are evidently done by classroom teachers to achieve the targeted passing percentage. For honest to goodness conduct of the test, they are very rewarding and meaningful. When test result fall

short of what is expected, would mean extra work, extra time, extra patience for teachers, school heads and monitoring subject area supervisor.

Attaining the elusive quality education of Philippine Educational System need coordinated efforts by everybody to produce responsible, productive, skilled and value-oriented citizens of our country.

The writer rose from a classroom teacher to school administrator. She has been exposed, immersed, had experienced being involved in this national assessment activity. It is both a challenge and rewarding. A challenge when students performed below the target. Rewarding when the outcomes is very satisfactory A question : Is NAT necessary?

When I was in fourth year high school I was asked by my teacher what course am I going to pursue after graduation. My answer was I want to be a teacher. I want to teach my pupils someday on how to spell, to love figures, to write and the most important one is on how to read.

My teacher told “hope you can be the best reader in the future”. This statement fascinated and challenged me to become one.

Since I love my work, I am always motivated to teach. Considering my pupils as my own children, I gave them the glamour, the expression of loving them, to let them feel that they belong in the classroom where they are in.

In the grade I world, teaching reading is not easy especially at the start. But then my mind is already

Individually, they handle classes to the extent that what they teach may become indelible to the young minds of the learners. They employ different techniques and strategies to make sure that the diverse intelligences of the learners are addressed.

Progressively, they are taking steps to attend to the need of globally competitive individuals as the country strikes forward for more development and success. Last year, K+12 Curriculum took off.

The 21st Century Learning consists of core subjects and themes that move around three core skills: life and career skills, learning and innovation skills, and information media, and technology skills. These are the skills that students need in order to be successful in the 21st century. The core subjects include:

English, Reading, Language Arts, World Languages, Arts, Mathematics, Economics, Science, Geography, History, and Government and Civics. In addition to the core subjects, schools must integrate the 21st century interdisciplinary themes in the daily instructional activities. The themes consist of global awareness, financial, economic, business, entrepreneurial, civil, health, and environmental literacy.

According to Trilling and Fadel (2009), the ability to work effectively and creatively with team members and classmates regardless of differences in culture and style is an essential 21st century life skill .

Likewise, teachers need to prepare the students for a world beyond the classroom in order for them to become successful in all aspects

of their lives. Also, leadership and responsibility “provides lots of opportunities to take responsibility and exercise leadership-skills important to future employers”.

Teaching students responsibilities will strengthen their work ethic when they have a job or career. They will be prepared and be confident when they are seeking for job opportunities. It will continue to help them succeed in the job market and learn even more skills.

Every day is a continuous challenge for the teachers to mold the learners into responsible, globally competitive citizens who would surely make the words of Gat Jose Rizal come true that the youth is the hope of the nation.

Help build a stronger and better nation by producing more productive citizens in your own classrooms.

Give the child the security he needs and approve what good things he did in school. Accept the child and befriend him so he’ll find love in me.

“Gasolina for Sale”, this caption can be seen almost everywhere in the highways of Bukidnon. Well this caption might soon replaced with “: Highway General Merchandise”.

This is because now a days almost everything that a man needs seems to be available in this kind of business. Fuel, milk, junk foods, you name it they have it. And even meat (chicken and pork) are being sold in the so called “Buhos Business”).

Buhos is an illegal selling of products by the delivery personnel. Well , no wonder why these trade have grown as fast as lightning. Prices are way down below compared with that of the stores with permit from the government. And everyone can buy any time of the day, mind you, that is a 24/7 business. This I think have swayed the hearts of the consumers to patronize such kind of commerce.

at night. Products are being dropped by the “producers” usually on the time that nobody notice or see.O course, we don’t have any in-born ability to see in the dark, so they do it at night. And I guess that the government is diurnal. It works at daytime and closes its eyes at night as we literally close our eyes as we sleep. Personally, i don’t see any illegal acts on this matter other than paying taxers to the government.

These people involved don’t have permit, thus, they are not issuing any receipt to their clients. And this trade is becoming so rampant if not yet. For sure this kind of commerce would hit our economy like fireball.

CAGAYAN de Oro City–– Four people perished in a truck and car collision Sunday evening along the national highway at barangay Sambulawan, Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental.

Three of the four died on the spot while the other one who was rushed to a hospital was declared later as dead on arrival.

The identities of the four have yet to be released by the police.

Laguindingan police chief Sr. Insp. Jalasis Teves said the four victims were in a Toyota Corrola when the car collided with a trailer truck carrying flour from Iligan City.

Teves said witnesses to the accident recounted that the car was speeding fast when it hit the truck.

He said the car was reported to have come from Marawi City, and that dead on the spot were two men and one woman who were pinned in the wrecked car.

The injured was brought to the Northern Mindanao Medical Center but attending doctor declared the person dead on arrival.

Truck driver Jermias Somondong is under further investigation by the police.

By virtue of its Powers and Duties under Section 149 of the Batas Pambansa Blg. 337 otherwise known as the Local Government Code, be it ordained by the Sangguniang Bayan of Tubod, Lanao del Norte, that; Section 1 – Any person or group of persons is prohibited to loiter or roam around any place within the territorial jurisdiction of this municipality from ten o’clock in the evening (10:00 P.M.) through four o’clock in the morning (4:00 A.M.) except on conditions prescribed in the succeeding section.

Section 2 – Any person or group of persons may loiter or roam around in any place within the territorial jurisdiction of this municipality when using torch, gas powered lanterns, or similar lamps, illumination of which can clearly identify the person or group of persons concerned.

Section 3 – Battery powered Lamps usage is prohibited as this paraphernalia is commonly used by bad elements in the commission of crimes, except when said battery powered lamps are lighted continuously, not to be flickered, in order to produce sustained illumination.

Section 4 – Any person or group of persons found violation the provisions of this Ordinance shall suffer a penalty of imprisonment of not less than one month but not exceeding six months or a fine of not less than Two Hundred Pesos but not exceeding One Thousand Pesos, or both such fine and imprisonment at the discretion of the court.

Section 5 – All the municipal laws and/or ordinances or parts thereof, which are inconsistent with the preceding are hereby repealed or amended accordingly.

At the rate things are going, with many Yolanda victims storming media outlets with their complaint that, despite the trillions of pesos in local and international aid that had been received by the Aquino government they are still unable to receive any assistance at this point, there is a need for our officials now to do a math, or an accounting.

I just wanted people to know about our complaint: where are the billions and billions of money for Yolanda victims? As of now, we are being given only relief donations. We are patiently occupying tents. They should give us materials or money so we could put up our own houses…”

MULTANEOUSLY? Can anyone tell us why, all of a sudden, there is a rush to start two major road projects that would traverse and thereby cause monstrous traffic jams in Metro Manila’s main highways? I am sure there is a good explanation as to why the two projects are being pursued almost at the same time, without regard for the great inconvenience they will give to everyone in the metropolis?

It is of course understandable that there is a real need to pursue these projects, considering the long-term benefits they will give to the whole nation once they are completed.

But then, it would seem that the Aquino government did not even consider the possibility that the economic dislocation the projects will cause, while they are being constructed, may outweigh those long-term benefits.

The INC Worldwide Walk was staged in 85 locations in the Philippines and 55 more sites around the globe (34 in the USA, six in Europe, 10 in Australia and New Zealand and five in Asia) in a 1.6-kilometer distance and was participated in by more than 500,000 walkers.

Ubaldo and Brother Felix Bautista, district minister and assistant district minister respectively, with the more than 28,000 participants led the 1.6-kilometer walk at 7 a.m. from the junction of Kauswagan-Puntod bridge in the McArthur park of the provincial capitol compound, the convergence area in Misamis Oriental and nearby cities, municipalities and barangays.

Some participants arrived as early as 3 a.m. and others came all the way from the towns of Magsaysay and Manticao, all in Misamis Oriental, just to join the event.

“We did not expect to have these numbers of participants,” said Ubaldo adding, “the result was very amazing, even non-members of the church joined us in our cause of helping the needy.

He said: “We thank our brothers and sisters who heartily cooperated and made the momentous event a big success, most of all we gave back all the glories to our Lord God!” Several personalities, including LTO-Assistant Regional Director Nelson Manaloto joined in the walk.

The INC Executive Minister’s message and compassionate care for fellow countrymen and INC brethren was read before the large crowd that participated at the large INC Worlwide Walk held in 85 sites in the country and 55 more sites abroad.

“The jeepney barkers don’t know it, but I am right there where they are.

I roam around to see the real situation of the city,” Duterte said in last Sunday’s “Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa” television show.

“If I see you being abusive on the streets, ipaligis ‘ta mo (I will have you run over),” Duterte warned.

Duterte added that he was aware that he would face the Commission on Human Rights’ ire once again for making such a public statement.

The mayor made the statement as a follow-up of his stern warning last week to 41 jeepney barkers caught in several areas of the city.

Duterte said that he just tolerated the practice because it’s an honest way of

living as long as the jeepneys do not cause gridlock.

City Police Director Vicente Danao said that the barkers were apprehended after numerous complaints from citizens reaching the police office via their “Isumbong kay City Director hotlines.”

The hotline involves phone numbers, as well as a Twitter page and a Facebook page.

“You’re contributing to the congestion because you detain and you dilly-dally the movements and mobility of the vehicles,” Duterte said.

The mayor said the practice of waiting for passengers along busy intersections contribute to heavy traffic in the city.

“I don’t like it when the barkers demand their price.

Another problem is when the barkers stop the drivers from leaving by blocking their vehicles,” Duterte said.

Duterte said he was also angered by reports that barkers touch women passengers to let them into the vehicles.

“That’s bad manners.

The mayor, however, said he understood the situation of the barkers, saying barking is neither sanctioned nor allowed.

However, Duterte said that he would consider prohibiting “barking” if the reports of abuse continue.

Gunmen seize couple in Southern Philippines

AMBOANGA CITY – Unidentified gunmen abducted a Filipino couple shortly after they arrived by boat at dawn Sunday in the southern province of Sulu, police said.

Police said Bonifacio Salinas, 54, and his wife, Claire, just returned home from Zamboanga City and were about to enter their house in Patikul town when gunmen seized them. “We are investigating the motive of the abduction and who were behind it,” Senior Superintendent Abraham Orbita, the provincial police chief, told the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner.

He said the couple, who works at the Jolo Mainland Water District, were seized in the village of Kasalamatan by five gunmen who dragged them to a waiting jeep.

No individual or group claimed resp onsibility for the latest abduction, but previous cases in the province have been largely blamed to the Abu Sayyaf, a small, but the most notorious rebel group specializing in ransom kidnappings and terrorism.

In December, police in Sulu arrested an Abu Sayyaf member Haik Asgali alias Abu Aswad who was implicated in the February 2012 kidnapping in Tawi-Tawi province of two European wildlife photographers Ewold Horn, 52, from Holland; and Lorenzo Vinciguerre, 47, from Switzerland.

Asgali, who was captured in Jolo town, is a nephew of Abu Sayyaf leader Radulan Sahiron.

The two foreigners, along with their Filipino guide Ivan Sarenas, 35, were abducted at gunpoint by five men in the coastal village of Parangan in Panglima Sugala town while taking photographs of wild birds, and handed them over to the Abu Sayyaf. Sarenas managed to escape, but the fate of the two foreigners is unknown.

Zambo fire official advises public to be extra cautious during blackouts ZAMBOANGA CITY –A top official of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has advised the public to exercise extra caution during blackouts especially if they rely on candles or gas lamps to prevent occurrence of fire.

Supt. Dominador Zabala, Jr., fire marshal of the BFP’s Zamboanga City Fire District (ZCFD), issued the advice since residents of this city are again experiencing from four to five hours daily rotational blackout.

“If p o s s i b l e , t h e y should use rechargeable lanterns and not candles since there were several

fire incidents in the past originated from unattended candles,” Zabala said.

Z ab a l a note d t hat many of the residents still prefer to use candles or gas lamps “since these are cheaper than the rechargeable lamps.”

He said the public should also check for the Product Standard (PS) mark to ensure the rechargeable lamps they are buying are of high quality standards.

He said it is best also to turn off the main switch during blackouts to avoid power surge when electricity service resumes.

“The electrical con-

nections must also be in accordance to specifications and inspected by licensed electricians,” he added.

In case of fire, Zabala said they should immediately call the nearest fire station.

The ZCFD has seven fire stations located in the barangays of Sta. Maria, Tetuan, Ayala, Manicahan, Quiniput, Vitali, and downtown area.

The ZCFD also maintains s e ven f ire substations located in the barangays of Guiwan, Boalan, Sta. Catalina, Upper Calarian, Recodo, Talisayan, and Mercedes.

Abraham Orbita, Sulu police director, said.

Orbita identified the victims as Engineer Bonifacio Salinas, Jr., 54, and his wife, Claire, both employees of the Jolo Mainland Water District.

They were seized around 5:30 a.m.

Sunday in front of their residence in Kasalamatan Village, Barangay San Raymundo, Jolo, Sulu, he said.

Orbita said the couple has just arrived by boat from Zamboanga City.

AVAO CITY – Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte said the government should negotiate with businesses first regarding unpaid taxes before using its powers to auction or adding surcharges to the delinquent accounts.

This comes a week after it was revealed at the City Council that the City Treasurer's Office (CTO) listed P1.12 billion in uncollected real property taxes.

Speaking at the weekly 'Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa' television show last Sunday, Duterte said that while it was the exclusive domain of the local government, it could also adopt a more diplomatic means to collect the taxes.

Vice Mayor Paolo Z. Duterte said in a privilege speech at the Sangguniang Panlungsod last week that he was concerned about the delinquencies and asked the CTO to step up collections or leave office.

“We can ask them to pay the taxes slowly and schedule the payments,” the mayor said.

He added he was also considering the condonation of penalties, but that

the government should still charge the penalties.

“The surcharges, we can do away with,” Duterte said.

Mayor Duterte said the city government could be more “diplomatic” about the tax collections. “That's not how to run a city,” the mayor said.

“Enter into a compromise, make a schedule, and hope they follow what is specified there,” he said.

Vice Mayor Duterte said the city council could be forced to “use all applicable powers of the law” and said the body could amend the Tax Code so that collections by the CTO would be enhanced.

According to a copy of a list of real property tax delinquencies per district, Poblacion District had the most delinquencies, at P483,637,744.90, with Buhangin District with the second highest at P359,813,423.26.

Agdao district's collectibles have reached P99,629,015.81, w hi le Bu n aw an d i st r i c t h a s P94,197,059.69.

Calinan district has P52,642,397.13 in collectibles, while Baguio and Paquibato districts have P15,172,023.21 and P10,069,666.44, respectively.

The data distributed by the finance committee compiled partial information from the CTO, as of December 31, 2013.

This accounted for only 7 out of the city's 11 treasury districts.

Dayanghirang said his office was still compiling data that they received from the CTO. City Treasurer Rodrigo Riolo said in a telephone interview that there was still a need to clean up the information they received, clarifying that the CTO data is based on the report by the City Assessor's Office.

There could have been data that was redundant, he said.

CTO Real Property Unit acting chief Victor Ranada said the redundant or duplicated data could have bloated the total amount and that they were working on cleaning up the data.

Ranada also cited that there could have been properties that were assessed in one name and declared delinquent but was transferred in another name with the new taxpayer already paying the amount.

Under the auspices of Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan’s Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts (XCCA), the film harvest is one of the few festivals in the country seeking to educate and empower the Filipino audience with regional stories, pride for local culture and artistic works that exist outside the realm of the capitalistic mainstream cinema.

“Cinema Rehiyon 6 features filmmaking frontiers that could give positive imp ac t and t ransfor m our lives for the better.

These films will educate us about disaster risk reduction management, climate change, cultural solidarity and other societal issues,” Hobart Savior, XCCA director said on this year’s theme, “Filming the Frontiers.”

From professionals, students, experimental and full-lengths, the event offers a total of 98 films, the highest number of entries since its inception in 2009.

law” (Infinite Sun) which director Glenmark “Marky” Doromal described as a love stor y close to the experimental genre with many metaphorical elements and patches of memories.

Considered one of the country’s emerging talents, Marky started his filmmaking stint during his high school years at Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT).

“I was in high school when I made my first film, “Sealed” together with classmates, as a requirement for a subject. It was not perfect; I had a lot of flaws directing my first short film at a very young age,” he recalled.

“Nonetheless, I wanted to showcase my wildest imagination for an ambitious project. It gave me more than what I expected.

It served as a launch pad that gained me a scholarship at De La Salle - College of Saint Benilde for a filmmaking program (BA Digital Filmmaking), after joining Cinemagis and Cinema Rehiyon in 2010,” added Doromal who just graduated this year.

Cinemagis Short Film F e s t i v a l i n No r t h e r n Mindanao was crafted in the same year as Cinema Rehiyon and top student filmmakers were offered scholarships to pursue the craft of filmmaking.

19-year-old Marky admits he is still building his own aesthetics in gradual pace and keeps himself open to experimenting with various techniques, depending on the demands of the story he wants to tell.

“Filmmaking is very tricky and you could think of a thousand ways to make a film. Right now, I am closer to utilizing visionary or very imaginative elements like there’s some kind of adrenaline to my films … because my heart is in science fiction ever since I was a kid,” he said.

True enough, Marky’s first ever love story shot in Iligan City reaped a rundown of awards during the 2013 Mindanao Film Festival in Davao City where it won Best Film, along with 5 major awards.

Recently, it garnered the awards for Best Actress and Best Production Design at the Nabunturan Film Expo (Simballay Festival), also in Davao City and 3rd Place Short Fiction at the 25th Gawad CCP for Alternative Film and Video.

London-educated filmmaker Gray-em Erezo joins this year’s fest with “Lugdang” (Drowned), inspired by a distressed girl he met at CDO’s Divisoria in 2012.

“She was like mentally drowned,” Erezo emphasized. “I used the word ‘drowned’ because she was drowned physically, mentally and emotionally. She could not even talk. She lost her family during the flash flood brought about

by [Typhoon] Sendong.”

For tackling the aftermath of the catastrophe, “Lugdang” received the 2014 Cinemagis Special Jury Award for Social Responsibility on Climate Change.

A mosaic of different cultures With screenings expanding every year, local audiences are also growing to match the rise in film quality.

The festival also features a menu of seminars and workshops for aspiring moviemakers and actors in CineLikha with veteran actors Leo Martinez and Rex Cortez as resource speakers and mentors.

This year’s CineTalakayan focuses on the fusion of DRMM and films to compliment the CineBarangay film-showings to be held in two communities ravaged by Sendong, Brgy Balulang and Xavier Ecoville, the XU-led resettlement village in Brgy Lumbia.

“Part of CineBarangay is giving the communities a multimedia forum on climate change resiliency and disaster risk reduction management,” Savior added.

Moviegoers are only required to bring personal care items for their admission to the screening venues, which will be donated to t he Yolanda-lashe d places in the Visayas.

“We are a mosaic of different cultures and we should showcase that to our country,” Dr Rapatan stated.

“We need to get the word out that our culture— the Filipino culture— is much more complex, much more diverse and richer than those being shown in the commercial films.”

A good leader is a good follower. In the Philippine educational system, what have we done to lead our learners?

Teaching- if we do it right- is tough. One is challenged to face individuals with different needs, strengths, weaknesses, interests, culture, family background and pace of learning. This is a great call for teachers that needs- mind, body and soul to devout for the betterment of the learners.

Through our new curriculum, we have better hone the pupils to become great leaders in different leaning areas and discipline; English, Science, Mathematics, and even Entrepreneurship. By merely asking a pupil to lead a prayer or song is a way for him to be confident. This confidence maybe developed more if done daily.

Aristotle, Einstein, and Gandhi, etc. are great leaders in their respective forte. Yes, they have been gone

for so many years, yet we still follow their path to excellence especially in education and humanity. They were the leaders who were not afraid to take the step even if it wasn’t that acceptable to many.

Schools that prosper are run by the transformed leaders. They are the ones who are not afraid of taking risks just to commit success. Transformed leaders help the whole DepEd family to achieve quality education, thus, an immense way must be given to them.

We need them especially because of the crisis our country is facing today.

The harrowing experiences of the Filipino today call for an urgency to address the need.

In the school, we can show to the children that they’re worthwhile and let us allow them to learn the best of what they could that they couldn’t learn elsewhere. Let’s give them that chance. Teach the children to read, for tomorrow they will lead.
