MIDAYAP, North Cotabato – Trouble erupted in this municipality when members of the breakaway Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) attacked two barangays early today and took civilians as hostages. As of this writing, reports as to the number of casualties and civilians abducted are still conflicting even among military sources. Capt. Antonio Bulao, spokesman of the 602nd Infantry Brigade, said in a text message that BIFF Commanders “DM” and Abas Kudanding harassed the adjacent barangays of Malingao and Polongoguen in this municipality around 7 a.m. and held hostage three school teachers of the Malingao Elementary School. In another text message, Col. Dickson Hermoso, 6th Infantry Division spokesperson, said that BIFF first harassed an outpost in Barangay Rangaban 3 at 2:20 a.m. with unarmed members of the Civilian Volunteers Organization (CVO). Soldiers pursue NPA attackers in Misamis Oriental hinterlands By GERRY LEE GORIT, Correspondent

ISAMIS Oriental––Soldiers of the Philippine Army’s 4th Infantry Division have launched a pursuit operations against New People’s Army (NPA) members who attacked a patrol base in Misamis Oriental at 1 a.m. Sunday that resulted to the killing of the detachment leader and four CAFGU regulars.

Capt. Christian Uy, a spokesman of the 4ID based in Camp Evangelista, Cagayan de Oro City, said some 50-60 NPA fighters descended on sitio Lantad in Barangay Kibanban, Balingasag town, and hurled molotov bombs into the patrol base of the Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU). Uy said a firefight ensued between the NPA and the detachment resulting in the death of Sgt. Dante Laong, the detachment commander, and four members of the Civilian Armed Forces Group Unit. The body of Laong, a Muslim, was brought to a mosque in preparation for burial. At the time of the attack, the patrol base was manned by two soldiers and 12 CAFGU members. Uy said five men of the detachment were wounded. He said the firefight was over when reinforcements sent by the 4ID reached the area. The wife of one of the slain CAFGU members said the NPAs left the area early in the morning after holding a meeting in the sitio itself. She said the NPA had called on the civilians to get the bodies of the dead. Uy added that the wounded were helped by civilians. Balingasag Mayor Alex Quina has called a meeting with the town officials to render help to the families of the victims. Misamis Oriental first district Rep. Peter Unabia and Misamis Oriental Governor Yevgeny Vincente Emano have also mobilized thir resources to assist the affected residents. Some eight years ago, Lantad was declared a model for peace development after the communist insurgency was neutralized in the area after decades of fighting.

ZAMBOANGA City––Police arrested a 37-year old refugee man who allegedly raped his own niece at a government shelter in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines, officials said. Officials said the man forced his self on the fiveyear old girl inside a small tent. The girl said her uncle threatened her with a knife as he was kissing her body. She said man ran away after she screamed so hard after he tried to insert his penis. Other refugees chased the man and was eventually arrested and handed over to the police. Over 100,000 refugees are now in various evacuation sites following the breakout of fighting between security and rebel forces on September 9. Moro National Liberation Front rebels stormed Zamboanga and took over 200 people and used them as shield. ZAMBOANGA City–– Fire broke out anew, bringing to at least 16 the fire incidents since the standoff started last September 9 following the incursion of hundreds of Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) rebels in this city.

Fire broke out around 1 p.m. in the interior part of Barangay Sta. Barbara at the height of intermittent firefight. Armed Forces of the Philippines Public Affairs Officer Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala said the troops continue to advance to retake positions earlier occupied by the MNLF rebels. Zagala said the troops are cautiously advancing as the rebels are still holding hostage at least 21 people.

Two MG-520 rocketfiring helicopters are providing air support to the ground troops that continue to advance. Police Regional Office-9 (PRO-9) Chief Insp. Ariel Huesca said that continuous clearing operation is still being conducted by the government forces in the affected barangays. Huesca said that the government forces suffered 14 killed--11 soldiers and three policemen--and 147 wounded--134 soldiers and 13 policemen. Huesca said that 11 civilians were also killed while 70 others were wounded since the start of the standoff last September 9. A total of 98 MNLF rebels were killed while 99 were captured and 24 have surrendered, according to Huesca. A report from the Philippine News Agency

CAMP RAFAEL RODRIGUEZ, Butuan City––One person was killed in an early noon fire that gutted down a total of 126 houses in Riverside and Caramcam Districts, Barangay Mangagoy, Bislig City on September 21 this year. Police identified the victim as 92 years old Maxima Lim, a deaf-blind, whose remains were retrieved by authorities out of the debris. Accordingly, the fire which started from an overheating ceiling at the house of Jonathan Braza, rapidly affected the neighbouring houses that are made mostly of light materials. Most of the displaced families are now temporarily sheltered at the Mangagoy Barangay Gymnasium. Migrants’ group amplifies ‘Zero Remittance Day’ First of a series By JANESS ANN J. The Zero Remittance Day is a symbolic action of OFWs of withholding the sending of their remittances for a day to call for the abolition of the pork barrel system and for an end to corruption. Ypil knows what children of OFWs go through, and it pains him to see that while families of OFWs suffer to eke out a living, government offi-

cials brazenly steal the people’s money. Though the young Ypil no longer has contact with his father Rolando Sr., an overseas Filipino worker deployed at the United Arab Emirates, he said he posted the call for the Zero Remittance Day on Facebook, among other social networking sites, in the hope of reaching out to other OFWs to encourage them to participate in the symbolic protest against the pork barrel system. “I know how it feels like, the hardships faced by children left behind by parents leaving to work abroad. I do not want others to go through what I did,” Ypil told Bulatlat.com during a protest action in Mendiola on September 19, 2013. Ypil believes that if funds

allocated to pork barrel are put to better use, no parent would ever have to leave their family behind to work abroad. On September 19, he joined the protest action in Mendiola, led by Migrante International, to call for the abolition of the pork barrel. Last week, Migrante International called on fellow Filipino migrant workers to participate in a Zero Remittance Day, a symbolic protest by OFWs to call for the abolition of the pork barrel of government officials, including the president’s. Among the biggest protest actions include the Million People March and Forward March, which both took place at Rizal Park. Sept. 19, the date set for the

Zero Remittance Day, is also the anniversary of the implementation of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration Omnibus Policy, which mandates each Filipino leaving to work abroad to pay the government the amount of $25 per contract. The said mandatory contribution has long been deemed by migrants group as anti-migrant because it is a form of taxation imposed on OFWs. Yet, despite the fact that OWWA has managed to gather an estimated $ 325.35 million from the contributions and about $21 billion from OFW remittances, Filipino migrant workers in distress are hardly given assistance by the government. “Today, we raise our call

to the government that its earnings from our taxes and remittances should be allocated to social services and greater state subsidy for OFWs in distress,” Connie BragasRegalado, convenor of DEPORK, a broad alliance of OFW groups and migrant rights advocates against the pork barrel system. Migrante International said at least 300 Filipino migrants organizations from 23 countries, including Hongkong, Japan, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Italy, Canada, United States, among others, participated in the Zero Remittance Day against the pork barrel system and the widespread corruption in the country.

During the protest action, Ypil was teary-eyed during his speech, as he gave others a run-down of what forced labor migration has brought to his family. Ypil gave up school to give way to his older sister who is also studying in college due to financial constraints. His parents eventually separated. He told Bulatlat.com that he and his two siblings are now left to fend on their own. “When I learned about the pork barrel scam, I was very angry. That money should have been spent for the welfare of Filipinos. My father was forced to leave us so he could provide for our needs. But our family ended up torn apart,” Ypil said.

BUTUAN City––The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) in Caraga has condemned “in the strongest terms possible”, the series of landmine attacks allegedly committed by New People’s Army rebels. In a rare public indictment, CHR-Caraga Regional Director Marylin Pintor, denounced the communist rebels for laying a landmine along a trail used by civilians in Barangay Kauswagan, Loreto, Agusan del Sur last August 9, 2013 “unmindful” of their safety. Media accounts said that five soldiers of the 26th Infantry Battalion’s Peace and Development Team who were patrolling the area, were seriously injured as a result of the explosion. The Philippine Army soldiers were securing the area for a scheduled

peace consultation between the government and town residents. Officials joining the event believed that the rebels already knew about the visit in the village, and only used the patrolling Army troopers as collateral damage to send a strong message to prevent the government from pursuing the consultation. According to Pintor, while the soldiers were the ones wounded in the incident, “laying the landmine along the trail used by the civilians shows that the rebel group is unmindful of the safety of the civilians. The placement of landmines in the public pathways does not only inflict casualties, but instills terror in the people.” Pintor put to task the rebels for violation of International Humanitarian Law under Paragraph 2, Article 13, Protocol II, of the Geneva Convention which states that, “2. Acts or threats of violence the primary purpose of which is to spread terror among the civilian population is prohibited.” The CHR-Caraga chief said “By employing landmines in populated areas, the NPA has violated its undertaking under the Comprehensive Agreement on the Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL). Part III, Article II, Section 15 of that agreement states that the use of landmines is strictly prohibited.” Pintor also accused the NPAs for violating the Human Rights Law with the use of landmines “as these are not only deadly weapons, they also deprive rural communities of livelihood as land become unsafe for economic activities, settlement, and transit. All these affect the exercise and enjoyment of the civil, political, economic, social, and cultural

rights of the people affected by the armed conflict.” Pintor took issue with the communist rebels’ attacks on a government militia patrol base in Barangay Camp Edward in Alegria, Surigao del Norte on September 3, 2013 at 6:10 pm, and on another government militia patrol base in Barangay Mahayahay, Kitcharao, Agusan del Norte at 6:20 pm on the same day. On September 4, some 10 NPA rebels harassed a militia patrol base in Barangay Baliguian, Jabonga, Agusan del Norte at 3:45 am and at around 5:30 am, 10 rebels attacked a company of Police Special Action Force in Barangay San Roque, Kitcharao, Agusan del Norte where police personnel recovered an improvised explosive device (IED) and other bomb-making paraphernalia after the firefight, she said. She sought the NPA’s answer to the question on the impact of

its continued use of landmines against government troops in its political capital and moral ascendancy. Pintor said the Communist Party of the Philippines/ New People’s Army/ National Democratic Front has turned a blind eye to the clamor of the people for a peaceful resolution of the armed conflict with its “continued advocacy of violence instead of seeking peace.” “If the CPP/NPA/NDF reaffirms, as it says it does, The Hague Joint Declaration of 1992, particularly its paragraph 5.a. on “Specific measures of goodwill and confidence building to create a favorable climate for peace negotiations,” that it says it wants resumed, then it should not allow landmines to drown the voices that need to be heard, the ones who call for peace, for the road to peace in Mindanao can never be reached through violence,” she stressed.

SAN Luis, Agusan del Sur– –A government soldier who joined the armed forces as integree of Moro National Liberation Front was freed yesterday by the New Peoples Army rebels after 40 days of captivity. San Luis Mayor Ronald Corvera who led the tedious month -long negotiation said captors belonging to NPA Front 88 finally agreed to release Corporal Salman Abbas even without the original demand to free him in exchange for the freedom of Manobo tribal chieftain detained at the provincial jail for arson charges filed by a logging firm. by communist guerrillas after they were abducted by NPA rebels in the hinterlands of San Luis, once the hotbed of communist armed struggle during the logging boom in the early 1980s. Corvera was instrumental in the release of Corporal Jawad Awadi who was abducted by the same NPA unit in July 2011 after two days of captivity. ALENCIA CITY — The Aquino administration’s conditional cash transfer program, 4Ps or Pantawid Pamilyang Plipino Program was among the issues that were criticized during the anti-pork barrel rally Saturday of the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan). Jose Benemerito, chair of the Kahugpungan sa mga Mag-uuma sa (Kasama) Bukidnon, a group allied with the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan), said the 4Ps program is a mockery and has not alleviated the plight of the poor. The inter-faith rally was organized by Bayan in coordination with church groups and other sectors to commemorate the 41st anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law. The protest, a follow up to a September 13 antipork rally in Malaybalay City was attended by some 300 representatives from different churches, farmers

organizations, including members of the League of Filipino Students (LFS) from Central Mindanao University and Bukidnon State University. The protest was held at the newly constructed but not yet operational Valencia City Central Market. Benemerito said there is no way the program can alleviate the poverty of the country’s poorest of the poor, with estimated aid of P10 a day or P300 per family per month. The program provides cash grants to beneficiaries provided that they comply with the set of conditions required by the program.

According to its website, 4Ps helps to fulfill the country’s commitment to meet the Millennium Development Goals, namely eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality, reduce child mortality, and improve maternal health. He said the 4Ps budget of P46 billion budget, proposed to be increased to P62 billion, will be put to waste if not spent directly on social services. The group called for the abolition of pork barrel and sought to re-channel the funds to social services like health and education. He also said that the government’s priority are products that are in demand abroad like pineapples, banana, and jatropha but it has neglected its food security concerns for rice and corn. He added that what’s making it worse is the government’s alleged tendency to import rice instead of working on sufficiency. A representative from Kabataan Partylist said that it is apparent from the P10 billion pork barrel that the national government has budget for corruption but not for education. The representative cited that although there is an increase in the budget,

P1.9 billion for state universities and colleges is not enough. They said 79 of the 110 SUCs suffered budget cuts. Representatives from different religious groups also hit the pork barrel system in the protest, each taking turns in reading statements or pastoral letters from church leaders. The bishops of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines, in a pastoral letter dated Sept. 12 and read by a lady pastor, said the pork barrel is an “abuse of the poor and betrayal to the nation.” They have called for thorough investigation, prosecution and end of “climate of impunity in the country.” Fr. Jojo Brigoli, parish priest of San Agustin Parish in Valencia City, read the pastoral letter prepared by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines earlier this month. The bishops referred to corruption in government as “a grow-

THE BLAME GAME “When you blame others, you give up your power to change.” - Dr. Robert Anthony Every act we do, every decision we make, is motivated by the desire to acquire happiness. We spend our time, energy & ability in the relentless pursuit of happiness. The yearning to gratify our constant hunger for happiness is ingrained in our nature, because our loving God does not want us to miss out on the wonder of His creation. But foolish as we are, by our own hand we have prevented the magnificent bird of happiness to perch on our shoulder. We have infuriating habits and attitudes that unwittingly drive our bliss away. What we repeatedly do, becomes our habit. And it is our habits that make and dictate our life. Exasperatingly clueless, we have a profusion of habits that steal away our happiness. If I am to enumerate them all, they can become the contents of a bestselling book. Not a bad idea! I will start with the most common, innocent ones which at first blush seem harmless enough. But these habits are traps, just waiting for a chance to screw us up. Take the habit of blaming. Our finger always points to the fault of the other person, never our own. The traffic made us late, not because we woke up late. The boss is hard to please, not because we are careless with our work. We are constantly bickering, not because we are aggravating, but because our spouse lacks understanding. We blame others to make us look better in our own sight. It props up our self confidence. But the downside is, we don’t grow. We don’t improve. We won’t make the effort to amend. In our own eyes we are close to perfect, so what is there to correct? It has not dawned on us, that we are not immune

The business of happiness Girlie Gualberto-Suan to making a few mistakes every now and then. It will add to the sum total of the world’s happiness if we can acknowledge that we are not infallible, and magnanimously claim the blame. Even if the blunder is wholly the fault of the other person, let’s give our ungrudging understanding, and allow room for people to make mistakes. Where there are people, there are mistakes. Why blame them for your problems? They are not in control of your life. You are. Only you are in charge of your own happiness. Accept that people will always fall short of your expectations. Instead of blame-shifting, take responsibility for whatever happens. Don’t keep the seething embers burning, by passing the blame around. As for me, I have carved it in stone that I will not indulge in the blame game. I will gallantly accept that omissions and misinterpretations, are part and parcel of being human. I will find the best solution to the problem, learn from the experience, and move on. That’s the most effective way to avoid being bitter and angry, and it leaves us free to be happy. We have no control over what happens to us, but we have control over our reaction to it. We can choose what to feel. We have command over our decisions. To make sorry excuses for our mess and to dump the blame on others, is to pursue wretchedness instead of happiness.

The news came as a shock for Luna, who was covering the crisis since day one, and also among his friends and other local journalists. Luna has been covering the violence in the frontlines without any safety equipment, but only his desire to bring the news to the public. Congress to probe termination of tripartite review of 1996 peace pact with MNLF rebels MINDANAOEXAMINER.COM

ZAMBOANGA City––Two Filipino lawmakers have filed a resolution that would investigate the Philippines’ decision to terminate the tripartite review of the 1996 government peace agreement with the Moro National Liberation Front. Lawmakers Carlos Zarate and Neri Colmenares filed House Resolution 302 directing the Committee on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity to conduct the investigation in aid of legislation. In the resolution, the two lawmakers said MNLF spokesman Emmanuel Fontanilla confirmed that rebel forces under Nur Misuari, the Front’s chieftain, launched the attacks in Zamboanga City in response to the government’s termination of the tripartite review of the peace deal and to defend their leader from possible arrest following his declaration of Mindanao independence and militarization in areas controlled by rebels in southern Philippines. The resolution further said that President Benigno Aquino has applied “divide and rule” tactic in dealing with separatist rebels and the ongoing peace talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the agreement on the Bangsamoro government entity

and the disregard to the MNLF peace accord. In August, a group of senior MNLF leaders have passed a resolution asking the Aquino government to recall its note verbales with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation for the closure of the tripartite review of the peace accord. The former rebel leaders said they would only support the peace process as long as the Aquino government agreed on their condition to recall two diplomatic communications sent by Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario on January 30 and March 21 this year. While the senior MNLF leaders put a condition for their unwavering support to the tripartite review of the peace deal, they also affirm their “sustained support” to the accord to achieve the full implementation of the accord. The resolution, passed during the MNLF Senior Leaders’ Forum held in Zamboanga City, said: “The MNLF Senior Leaders Forum is ready to recommend among the leaders to join or constitute the membership of the MNLF peace panel for the resumption of the tripartite meeting as soon as possible in order to conclude the process to the satisfaction of the concerned parties.”

“And that we welcome the proposal to achieve a more comprehensive and inclusive political solution to the Bangsamoro problem through convergence of the two peace processes involving the MNLF and the MILF.” It was signed by signed by Abebakrin Lukman and Abuamri Tadik, both acting secretaries of the MNLF Senior Leaders’ Forum and attested by Yusop Jikiri, its presiding chairman. The two diplomatic communications also sparked a widespread condemnation from Misuari, who threatened to secede after accusing Manila of failing to honor provisions of the peace deal. Police in the Muslim autonomous region has said that it is gathering evidence to charge Misuari of sedition because his fiery statements in public meetings and pronouncement against the Aquino government. Police accused the former Libyan firebrand of fomenting sedition in the restive region of Mindanao. Misuari’s whereabouts is unknown, but intelligence reports said he is in Sulu province where he met with his commanders and hundreds of followers in the town of Indanan prior the attacks in Zamboanga City on September 9. There, he almost declared independence, but changed his

mind, saying he still needs to consult with his senior leaders before making the announcement in the right time. “We are going to find the right time to for the formal declaration (of independence. I still need to communicate with the OIC so we still have to discuss this with among us leaders,” he said in the local Tausug dialect. The OIC helped broker the peace talks between the MNLF and the Philippines that led to the eventual signing of the agreement. Misuari said it has been three decades now since the OIC mediated in the peace talks, but Manila has failed to comply with the provisions in the accord. Misuari has repeatedly accused the Aquino government of trying to abrogate the peace accord. He also denounced the peace talks between the Aquino government and rival rebel group MILF after peace negotiators signed an accord last year that would create a new Bangsamoro state. Misuari said the new deal violates the 1996 peace accord. The Muslim homeland would replace the existing Muslim autonomous region which is composed of Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Maguindanao and Lanao provinces, including the cities of Marawi and Lamitan. And several more

areas in the provinces of Lanao del Norte and North Cotabato would also be included in the new autonomous region. After the 1996 peace accord with the MNLF, Misuari became the governor of autonomous region. But many former rebels were disgruntled with the accord, saying, the government failed to uplift their standards of living. The rebels accused Manila of failing to develop the war-torn areas in the South, which remains in mired in poverty, heavily militarized and dependent financially on the government. In November 2001, on the eve of the elections in the Muslim autonomous region, Misuari again accused the government of reneging on the peace agreement, and his followers launched a new rebellion in Sulu and Zamboanga City, where more than 100 people were killed. Misuari escaped by boat to Malaysia, but was arrested there and deported to the Philippines. He was eventually freed in 2008 after Manila dropped all charges against him for lack of sufficient evidence. Koronadal LGU pushes organic farming

ORONADAL CITY – Upbeat with the prospects of the thriving organic agriculture industry, the city government here is pushing for the massive adoption by local farmers of the natural or traditional farming method.

City Mayor Peter Miguel said the local government is presently studying various “best practices” and technologies on organic agriculture for possible implementation in various farming areas within the city’s 27 barangays. He said they are specifically trying to learn from the experiences of local governments and institutions that have adopted and ventured into organic farming. “We’ve adopted organic

farming as one of our priority programs and we’re in the process of educating our farmers regarding the method to encourage their adoption,” he said in the city government’s radio program Kanami Koronadal. Miguel said the city agriculture office has been organizing study tours for local farmers to the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) in Kabacan, North Cotabato and several organic farming areas in Region 12. Southwestern Mindanao,

which produced almost half of the 106.55 metric tons (MT) of premium organic rice exported by the country to various foreign markets from May to July this year, has around 50 hectares of organic rice plantation areas located in M’lang town in North Cotabato and Sto. Nino in South Cotabato. At USM, Miguel said local farmers are trained on composting and the production of organic fertilizers through the utilization of available farm wastes and resources, among them rice straws and corn cobs. To complement such move, the mayor ordered the city environment and natural resources office (Cenro) to intensify the enforcement of a local ordinance that bans the burning

of rice straws and corn cobs in the area. Augustus Bretana, Cenro chief, said they have initially summoned seven farmers from three barangays in the city for violation of such prohibition, which is embodied in City Ordinance No. 5, series of 2009. He said the violators, who were caught in the act burning rice straws during Cenro’s enforcement activities, are from barangays Saravia, San Isidro and San Jose. Bretana said the ordinance has set a fine of P500 for the first offense, P1,000 for the second offense and P2,000 for a third infraction. Search for 2013 rice achievers begins By DANILO E. DOGUILES

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato -- Barely six months since it honored the country’s top performers in rice production and released a total of P110 million as rewards to the awardees, the Department of Agriculture has kicked off the search for the 2013 Agri-Pinoy Rice Achievers Awards (APRAA). Amalia Jayag-Datukan, regional executive director of DA 12, said, the search which aims to strengthen participation to rice production among local government units recognizes highly performing provinces , cities and municipalities. Besides LGUs, APRAA also awards model irrigators’ associations and agricultural extension workers for their contributions to the attainment of the department’s Food Self-Sufficiency Program, particularly in rice production. Director Datukan disclosed that the top ten rice-producing provinces will each receive P4 million worth of project grants while the top 48 municipal and city LGUs will each receive similar grants amounting to P1 million. On the other hand, 10 irrigators associations will each receive projects worth P1 million while three small water impounding systems associations will each get P500,000 as projects. All over the country, 500 extension workers will get incentive of P20,000 each. At the 2nd APRAA on March 15 this year,

Nueva Ecija, Isabela and Pangasinan led the list of top rice producing provinces, which also included Nueva Vizcaya, Bulacan, Kalinga, La Union, Davao del Sur, Compostela Valley, and Zamboanga del Sur. Of the 48 top performing municipal and city LGUs, four were from Soccsksargen Region, namely: Tulunan, Midsayap, and Kabacan in North Cotabato and Lambayong in Sultan Kudarat. The time is ripe to abolish PDAF and rechannel funds to basic social services,” #Abolish Pork Barrel Movement Spokesperson Atty. Emmanuel Mahipus said in a solidarity program. Mahipus slammed the government for its failure to

deliver the basic social services to the Filipino people amid the PDAF scandal which was only siphoned to the pockets of traditional politicians. 5 die, 3 hurt in MisOr NPA attack; Reds slain in Surigao encounter The 4th Infantry Division based here said some 60 NPA guerillas attacked and destroyed the security forces’ detachment of the Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit or CAFGU, at Sitio Lantad, Barangay Kibanban, Balingasag, at around 1 o’clock in the morning Sunday, leaving the Detachment commander and four of his CAFGU members dead. Three others were wounded. Fourth Infantry Division spokesman Capt. Christian Uy identified the detachment commander as Army Sgt. Dante Laum. Laum has one army enlisted personnel and 12 mitiamen under his command. The remains of Sgt. Laum is at the 4ID mosque and being readied for immediate burial, as the practice among Muslim, and Laum being a Muslim soldier. The detachment, which was mainly made out of light materials was set on fire, forcing the occupants to flee the area. Gaspar Tandayun, brother

of two militiamen and who was residing some 150 meters away from the raided outpost, said after the initial volley of fire, the rebels asked the soldiers and the militiamen inside the outpost to surrender prior to their final attack. One of the miltiamen surrendered but was shot dead by the attacking rebels. “After the attack, they shouted at residents to retrieve the bodies of those slain inside the outpost, Gaspar Tandayun said. Tandayun said he went to the outpost to look for his two brothers. Inside, he saw one of his brothers, Junil, lifeless. His other brother, Sonny, survived the attack and is now in the hospital and urrently being treated at the 4ID military hospital. Tandayun said the rebels were armed with high-powered assault riffles and took the firearms of some militiamen away with them. Dodoy Santua, a kagawad of Barangay Kibanban, said residents were on alert after being

When the reported attack did not happen, the village lowered their alert level until the Sunday attack happened, Santua said. Two months ago, the same outpost had been attacked, but the it managed to repulse, owing to the hilly strategic location of the outpost. The number of NPA rebels in Sunday’s attack was too much for the outpost manned by two cadreman-soldiers aided by 12 militiamen, Capt. It encouraged farmers to apply Trichoderma to hasten the rice straw’s decomposition and eventually use them as organic fertilizer. The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), in its National Inventory of Dioxins and

City crush United, Arsenal and Spurs top table David Moyes endured a humiliating first derby in charge of Manchester United as the champions suffered a crushing 4-1 defeat at Manchester City on Sunday. Sergio Aguero scored twice while Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri were also on target for a rampant City as they moved into third place, two points behind early pace setters Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur who both won to continue their strong starts. Aaron Ramsey scored his seventh goal of the season as Arsenal beat Stoke City 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium while Brazilian Paulinho struck deep into stoppage time to earn Tottenham a 1-0 victory at Cardiff City. Swansea City followed up a notable 3-0 Europa League win in Valencia in midweek with a 2-0 victory at Crystal Palace that moved Michael Laudrup’s side into mid-table. It was events at the Etihad Stadium that reverberated around the Premier League though as United were blown away in their first derby without Alex Ferguson in charge since 1986. Ferguson, who ended his glittering reign at United last season having won the title 13 times, was not present as his successor suffered a chastening afternoon -- his side conceding three goals in five minutes either side of halftime. Wayne Rooney curled in a precision free kick with the clock ticking down to become the highest United scorer in the history of the

NU’s Parks likens Ferrer to Detroit Bad Boys MANIL A, Phi lippines -- Nat iona l University forward Ray Parks chose a legendary NBA team when discussing his match-up against Kevin Ferrer, the lanky swingman of the University of Santo Tomas. “Michael Jordan had Detroit,” Parks said, referring to the Pistons teams of the 1980s that were known as the “Bad Boys.” “This is my Detroit. That’s just the easiest way to say it. This is my Detroit right here.” Jo rd a n a n d t h e C h i c a g o B u l l s repeatedly came up short against the Pistons in the 1980s, with the “Bad Boys” often frustrating Jordan with their highly physical brand of defense. It wasn’t until 1991 when Jordan and the Bulls finally had their breakthrough against the Detroit Bad Boys. Parks and his Bulldogs, however, have yet to experience a similar breakthrough against Ferrer and the Growling Tigers.
