Oro rafting outfitters rush safety proposals CAGAYAN de Oro City–– Local rafting operators here rushed a set of safety measures to prevent a tragic repeat of last Friday’s boating accident that caused the death of a 26-year-old nurse from Bohol. Mayor Oscar Moreno said local outfitters belonging to the Oro Association of Rafters managed to squeeze in their recommendation just before he made up his mind to suspend all whitewater rafting and kayaking tours along Cagayan de Oro River. “We opted not to suspend the whitewater rafting and kayaking operations because we will study the set of recommendations,” Moreno said. Meanwhile, the family of Aizza Calipusan Balbin brought her ashes back to her hometown in Loboc, Bohol Monday afternoon. Moreno creates body for safe tourism adventures

AGAYAN de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno has created a body to look into the safety of all tourism adventures in the city, not just whitewater rafting.

Moreno said the new group will be chaired by former Department of Tourism (DOT) 10 director Dorothy Pabayo and composed of experts in the fields of whitewater rafting, river trekking, kayaking, jet skiing, spelunking, canyoneering, ziplining, among others. The move came after the death of Boholano tourist Aizza Mae Balbin, 26, who was yanked into a water hole full of debris during a whitewater cruise last Friday. During a press conference Monday, June 16, Moreno emphasized that reviewing the safety measures of the whitewater rafting and related ventures must be in the form of selfregulation among operators since they themselves know the technicalities of the adventure. “There must be a trust built between the government and the operators because they are the experts and they know better about the adventure that they offer than we do. It’s like the relationship between the government and medical practitioners. We in the government ensure that people don’t get sick. To do

that, we rely on doctors,” Moreno said. With this, services offered by Kagay Journey White Water Rafting and Kayaking and other firms are expected to continue in full swing. While Balbin’s body was fished out of the water, tourists still went out in droves to patronize the whitewater cruise, which Cagayan de Oro has been known for since 1995. The incident last Friday marked the first time a death has occurred at the Cagayan river rapids since the adventure was offered 20 years ago. Balbin’s body was cremated yesterday morning here and the family brought the remains home – everything was shouldered by the city government. The grim incident also coincided with the visit of International Rafting Federation ex-officio director Mark Joffe, who was looking into the Cagayan river rapids scene for an international tournament to be held here this November. Joffe graced the press conference yesterday and told Moreno that the tournament is still on despite what happened. (C. Ordonez)

Taoid Heritage Program for NorMin kicks off June 16 in MisOcc By RUTCHIE CABAHUG-AGUHOB

JIMENEZ, Misamis Occidental – The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) will launch the Taoid Heritage Program (Taoid) in northern Mindanao, from June 16-20, this year, by a caravan that starts in this province. A heritage conservation program, “Taoid,” is derived from the Ilocano word “mana” meaning “inheritance” in English and “kabilin” or “solundon” in Cebuano. It is also a homonym for “tawid,” the Filipino word and “tabok,” the Cebuano word for “to cross,” respectively. It has been adopted by NCCA as official name of this annual year-long program that hopes to assist local communities across the country to discover, document, and disseminate their cultural heritage treasures and help cross the Filipino heritage for generations to come. With this year’s theme, “Pamanang Pinoy: Taoid 2014,” the program aims to give us the glimpse of

the legacies of the past and how it remains to shape the present and the future, Rene S. Napenas, Head, NCCA Public Affairs and Information Office, said. Particularly in Misamis Occidental, the caravan starts on June 16 with a visit to a ‘Kamil’ tree in Jimenez, a local tree which bears different kinds of fruits and considered sacred by the locals and an unnamed old wooden bridge built in town for pedestrians. Also included in the Jimenez itinerary are the Bacaro Building, the oldest printing press, open since 1938 that printed emergency money during World War II, Jimenez Statue, House of the late Senator Jose Ozamiz, the Palilan River, and the House of

Suman in Clarin town. Meanwhile, the Taoid program will be launched at the St. John, the Baptist, Church also in Jimenez, on June 17, after the celebration of a Eucharistic Mass and a lecture on the Heritage Law, round table discussions and presentations of the NCCA Committees on Plans and Thrusts, Archives, Art Galleries, Historical Research, Libraries and Information Services, Monuments and Sites and Museums. Other areas in the region where the Taoid program will be launched are Iligan City, Lanao del Norte, June 18, Jasaan, Misamis Oriental, June 19 and Cagayan de Oro City, June 20, Napenas added. Export prospects bright for banana and mango T

he Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) during the weekend said that with the ongoing negotiations for the export of Philippine banana to US territories such as Guam, Northern Mariana Islands and Hawaii, export prospects for locally grown bananas look bright. BPI Director Clarito Barron in a news release said export of bananas from Mindanao to the US “will definitely lead to an increase in the country’s revenue and, therefore, boost our banana industry.” The initial commercial export of Philippine bananas to Continental US was shipped to San Diego, California on August 20, 2013. A total of 486 cartons (6.561 MT) of highland Cavendish Dole Sweet bananas sourced from Bukidnon was sent to the US. The BPI director meanwhile added that being declared as Freedom Area for Mango Pulp and Seed Weevil by the US government through the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) on February 8, 2013 is indeed a good

development, as this would give the Philippines the privilege to source mango for export in the USA in any of its provinces, except Palawan, and would entice other countries to import our mango. Mango pulp weevil (MPW) and mango seed weevil (MSW) are pests that attack the pulp and seed of the mango fruit, respectively, rendering it inedible. The Special Commodity of Understanding for the Importation to Australia of fresh mango fruit from the Philippines was officially signed at the Philippines Australia Agriculture Forum held in Canberra, Australia on July 9, 2013. Mangoes from Guimaras and Samal Islands, as well as Davao del Sur entered the Australian market on June 8, 2013. The Six shipments from June 8 to July 10, 2013 to Melbourne and Adelaide, has a total volume of 4.76 metric tons (MT) and is equivalent to a total value of US $14,587. This signals the acceptance of the Australian government of the country’s mango not only sourced from the Island of Guimaras but to other areas as well, as a result of regular bilateral talks with Australian government, Barron said. Due to BPI’s commitment in the eradication of the said pests, out of 104,155 trees and 1,040,100 fruits targeted for sampling and collection, a total of 101,971 trees were sampled and 1,009,123 fruits were collected and dissected resulting in a 96.85 percent accomplishment for trees and 96.89 percent accomplishment for fruits for the year 2013. ZAMBOANGA CIT Y – Motorcycle gunmen shot and wounded two brothers in an attack in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines, police said Monday. Police said the victims – Michael Cuevas, manager of the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office in Zamboanga City, and Angelo Cuevas, the supply officer of the Zamboanga Sibugay Provincial Health Office – were attacked in the village of Tetuan before dawn Sunday. The two brothers were heading home on their motorcycle when one of the gunmen shot them. The assailants fled after the attack thinking they had killed their targets. Despite their wounds, the victims managed to drive to the nearest hospital. Police said crime investigators recovered bullet casings of .45-caliber pistol in the area. The motive of the attack is still unknown, but police said it launched an investigation into the shooting. City hall officials workers to undergo drug test TAGUM CITY -- All personnel of the city government assigned on maintaining peace and order in the city will undergo a mandatory drug test to reinforce the credibility of the human resources in the local government. No less than Mayor Allan L. Rellon announced this on Monday, June 16, 2014 before the Security Management Officers (SMO) and Traffic Management Officers (TMO), who will be subjected to a mandatory drug test. “We assume that all employees in the city government are not into drug addiction and the only way to prove that assumption is through this,” the local chief executive explained. Mayor Rellon added that this program will ensure that workers in the government are physically and mentally fit. City Human Resource Management Officer Edna J. Quilario also added that the said drug test will also be implemented to other city hall workers regardless of employment status

through random selection by the committee assigned in the implementation of the program. City officials from the Mayor down to the last Councilor and the respective Department Heads will also submit themselves for the drug test. All SMOs and TMOs gathered during the briefing were immediately sent to two separate drug testing center using the committee-assigned government vehicle to ensure that all will be subjected to the program. On his part, Vice Mayor Geterito Gementiza supported the program since this will elevate the image of government workers as “role models” to the society. Mrs. Quilario stressed that all results will be treated confidential, and her office will then spearhead reform program for those found to be positive as aligned in the LGU’s health and wellness program implemented by the CHRMO. AVAOCITY – Pol i c e clamped down Saturday on the release of information to the media on its investigation into the murder of a wealthy businessman in Davao City. Police said the move was important so as not to jeopardize the investigation in the killing of Richard King, who owns Crown Regency Hotel and Resort, and other businesses in Cebu province and other par ts of the country. King was shot in the head on June 12 by a lone gunman who walked right through a seminar inside a building also owned by the victim. The attacker fled on a motorcycle driven by another man after the shooting.

King’s family offered responsibility for the murP200,000 reward for any der, but police are looking information that would into several motives, inlead authorities to the killer or the mastermind to the murder. ‘Blue Water Cave:’ Bukidnon’s hidden paradise

QUEZON, Bukidnon — For adventurous people who like to smell wood blossoms in the cool fresh mountain air while plunging in a gently flowing cool blue waters, or go into caving or spelunking: Blue Water Cave in this landlocked province of Bukidnon is one perfect place to go.
