PDEA agent killed in buy-bust

CAGAYAN de Oro City–– An agent of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) was killed during a busted drug buy bust operation here past 12 noon Monday.

Police identified the lone fatality as PDEA investigation agent Joel Gineta, 44, of Cagayan De Oro. Gineta sustained fatal gunshot wounds in various parts of his body.

BUTUAN City––Security measures have been stepped up in Caraga region right after the bombing of a passenger bus in Maramag, Bukidnon last week, the regional office of the Philippine National Police said.

Bayting said police personnel with K-9 units are boarding and checking buses along the borders of Caraga region.

Duterte pleads to leave out civilians of any terror plots

DAVAO City––Mayor Rodrigo Duterte appealed to all rebel fronts to leave out civilians of any terror plots, saying, “It does not give you any advantage to your cause.”

The Davao mayor’s statement was in reaction to recent bombing of the Rural Transit Bus in Maramag, Bukidnon Tuesday last week that killed 10 people and wounded 42 others.

Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMinCom) has identified Garnet Lintang, a commander of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighter (BIFF), as behind the bombing as part of test mission for their new graduates.

While the BIFF denied hand in the incident, Duterte said he is bounded by the theory of the military in the absence of any proof of actions on the contrary.

He was saddened by the incident with civilians as the casualties of whatever groups are fighting for.

“Kinsa man ang nagbuhat niini (Whoever did it) they killed for nothing,” he said, adding it was a horrible thing and not easy to kill except for criminals.

Duterte said he would like to make peace with everybody – the BIFF…MILF. “If we can stop this kind of terrorism,” he pointed out.

According to him, he has seen a lot of war in the 40th year of rebellion. Recalling the 1970’s campaign in Cotabato, the mayor noted it lasted for many years and ended for nothing.

DOH to employ scare, positive tactics in campaign vs ‘crackers

UTUAN CITY – In the past, the Department of Health alternately conveyed its messages through both scare tactics and positive approaches in the campaign against dangerous firecrackers.

This year, DOH-Caraga Regional Director Miner va Molon said they will utilize both strategies in various information and advocacy materials

targeted on the young male population and their guardians to prevent these children from acquiring and using these firecrackers.

DOH-Caraga recorded 45 incidents of fireworksrelated injuries regionwide from December 21, 2013 to January 5, 2014 as reported by hospitals and clinics in the region. This data shows an increased of 60 percent from the previous year’s cases. Of the 45 cases, 43 or 95 percent were active cases wherein the victims themselves lit the explosive fireworks.

or bystanders. Age ranges from 6-35 years old in which majority of the cases belonged to the 6-10 years old bracket.

A media forum was organized by DOH-Caraga on December 12, 2014 at Luciana Convention Center here attended by Department of Trade and Industr y-Caraga’s Atty.

tion and proper eating habits and nutrition for the holidays.

Regional Director Molon said, “Injuries and deaths related to fireworks are preventable if parents guide their children to avoid firecrackers. We enjoin everyone to observe a firecracker-free holiday season. The PNP’s unfit police officers

The reporters who were covering the follow up operations of the ambuscade in Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental had their taste of the police treatment of members of the press there.

There are, of course, exceptions to the rule. While some police officers are cooperative and are willing to work with the media, some police officers are too cynical about seeing press people around.

What is lamentable ‘though, is that these contemptuous law enforcers are often high ranking police officers who became Generals or Chief Superintendent without basic knowledge in mass communications.

Perhaps, the attitude of Police Regional Director Chief Supt. Isagani Genabe toward the members of the press in Laguindingan showed his true character of ignorance on the working of the press.

ous to the working press whose job is only to cover a legitimate event involving police matters.

According to some colleagues, Genabe went to the municipal hall in Laguindingan last Saturday morning after receiving reports that one of the suspects in the ambush-slay try of Iligan City Rep. Vicente “Varf ” Belmonte last week.

Before Genabe personally went to Laguindingan, Gov. Yevgeny Vincente Emano of Misamis Oriental, instruct-

ed provincial administrator Edmundo Pacamalan, Jr., to put up an information desk for the working press there.

Emano knew that the media will be there to gather every detail of the operation.

Assigning the provincial administrator to take care of the information needs of the working press was a necessity.

We could only commend Emano and the team of Pacamalan in coordination with the local government of Laguindingan and the police for a job well done.

Perhaps, Genabe did not like Emano’s efforts. Not only that, Genabe knows that he did not, but Emano deserves the credit for the arrest of the suspect in Laguindingan.

Thus, Genabe went to Laguindingan last Saturday to see for himself the suspect and, maybe, to get some credit of the local police operation there. Bull!

Anyway, Genabe report-

“I don’t need any media person here,” Genabe reportedly retorted.

Well and good, Genabe.

The media do not also need you here. With all the unsolved incidents taking place in your area of responsibility in Northern Mindanao, one could simply say that you do not deserve your post as regional police director.

You try to feed the people in the region with your weekly accomplishment reports that contain nothing but recycled incidents.

He was an active spokesman, always there and ready to slug it out in the media speaking in behalf of the MILF. The public remembered him for his distinctive, crisp delivery and style of speaking. I recall gamely tangling with him before in several occasions while I spoke for government. Then suddenly, he disappeared from public view. According to the grapevines, he was expelled due to some “differences” with the MILF leadership.

“NOT SACKED” ---It was only during last Thursday before the BUC that he made public the circumstances of his leaving the MILF. He said: “Contrary

to what many thought, I was not sacked. I voluntarily and irrevocably resigned. ” He confided that he sent in his letter of resignation days before the MILF central committee convened to expel him.

OTHER OPTIONS ---I could tell that the reason for his leaving the ranks of the MILF evidently could explain his position today.

To me, he seemed to have doubted that the MILF formula was the only correct solution for the deliverance of the Bangsamoro.

He mentioned in passing about his attempt to foray into the forbidden field of politics which was contrary to MILF’s “hands off” or “non-participation” policy in Philippine elections.

Evidently, EID KABALU believed that there were other “paths” or options, other than just peace talks, that could also bring about the Bangsamoro aspirations.

He hinted about the difficult road his fellow MILF travelers were taking. He took the forbidden political path.

He made himself available and lobbied, although unsuccessfully, to be appointed as ARMM governor during the onset of the AQUINO administration, clearly in violation of the MILF policy.

CAGAYAN de Oro City-Five jeepney passengers were killed in a freak road accident late Sunday afternoon at Talakag, Bukidnon.

The jeepney from Cagayan de Oro City was follow-

ing a prime mover truck when the truck’s trailer loaded with a container van of bananas accidentally detached itself and crashed on the jeepney.

Three of the jeepney passengers were killed on the spot and two died later in a hospital.

Police identified the fatalities as Ethel Talaro of Cagayan de Oro, Irish Mae Napay, 13, of Talakag, and Blezel Cornita. The two who died in a hospital were identified as Ricardo Dapay, barangay councilor; and Eleanor Talaro.

Police still clueless over suspects in pawnshop heist

The Caagayan de Oro City Police Office has yet to identify the five robbers who robbed a pawnshop here Wednesday and carted away some P1-million worth of jewelry.

Armed with handguns, the robbers struck the Fely’s Jewelry and Pawnshop at the Limketkai Mall.

The security guard on duty at that time said the armed men caught him by surprise and he was disarmed by one of them who pointed a caliber .45 pistol at him.

He said one of the robbers had pretended to buy a wedding ring when they entered.

They were able to cart away the jewelries in the display cases that they axed to break the glass.

The robbers fled on motorcycles.

Police confiscate P5-M smuggled imported rice in Zambo del Sur

AGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur – The police have confiscated an estimated P 5 million worth of smuggled imported rice in the nearby municipality of Dumalinao this province, a top police official announced Monday.

Senior Supt. Sofronio Ecaldre, provincial police director, said the smuggled rice was seized Friday in a raid at a warehouse in Barangay

Upper Dumalinao, Dumalinao town.

Ecaldre said the smuggled imported rice that was confiscated at the warehouse of Gregorio Yap consisted of 5,400 bags of 25 kilos each.

Ecaldre said the warehouse caretaker failed to present documents to prove it was legally shipped and purchased.

Ecaldre said the confiscation of the smuggled rice came after Dumalinao Mayor Ace William

Cerilles received reliable information about the contraband stocked at the warehouse.

He said the raiding team also confiscated 4,000 empty sacks for 25 kilos and 50 kilos with markings “D & A Pagadian Golden Grains well-milled rice.”

He said they have padlocked the warehouse and is being guarded by policemen while waiting for the arrival of Bureau of Customs (BoC) officials for proper disposition. (PNA)

Zambo del Norte declared Conflict-Manageable and Development-Ready province

Dipolog City - The province of Zamboanga del Norte has been declared Conflict-Manageable and Development-Ready province following the signing of a joint resolution by the military, police and local elective officials in a simple ceremony held last Dec. 11 at the Zamboanga del Norte Convention and Sports Center this city.

The signing was led 1st Infantry Tabak Division Commander, BGen. Gerardo Barrientos Jr., Western Mindanao Command chief, Lt. Gen. Rustico Guerrero, Philippine National Police (PNP)-9 regional director, Chief Supt. Edgar O. Basbas, and Zamboanga del Norte Governor Roberto Y. Uy and attended by other AFP, PNP and local government

officials.

In his welcome message, Vice Governor Senen O. Angeles called upon the local populace to support the effort of the military and police in sustaining the maintenance of peace and order in the province, as it will open up the avenue for development of the people’s lives.

Except for some minor adjustments, Barrientos said the military personnel presently assigned here will remain here and will support the local police in the maintenance of peace and order.

DAR-Sibugay turns-over FMR;

Launches partnership vs hunger poverty in Titay town TITAY, Zamboanga Sibugay – A newly rehabilitated 3.18-kilometer farm-tomarket road (FMR) with spot concreting at barangays Kitabog and Mabini here was recently turned-over by the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR)-9.

DAR-9 Regional Director Julita A. Ragandang and Atty. Judith P. Mantos, provincial agrarian reform program officer of DAR-Sibugay, and Mayor Maria Esperanza Corazon D. Rillera of Titay led the project turnover to the recipient barangays.

Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer Mantos told the town officials and local residents to sustain and maintain the project.

“It is not everyday that a project is granted to a community and we are lucky enough to have LGU-Titay supporting this project.

Therefore, we asked of you to preserve this project. Its sustainability lies in your hands and it is a challenge to everyone,” said Mantos.

On the same occasion, a new project embarked recently by DAR called “partnership against hunger and poverty” was also launched.

“This is a very special event, having two very important activities conducted in a day,” remarked Atty.

“STEP DOWN, MR PRES.” -- Now, Mr. KABALU is one of the stalwarts of the newly formed BANGSAMORO TRANSFORMATION COUNCIL, the Muslim wing of the NATIONAL TRANSFORMATION COUNCIL (NTC) that is espousing for substantive reforms and calling on President Aquino and his government to immediately step down to start the reform agenda.

NO END? --One significant “babala” he mentioned was the eventuality that MILF leadership will accept “whatever is available” from the government. He talked about the prospect that NOT everyone in the Bangsamoro will agree with the final configuration of the BBL after constitutionally-bound Congress approves the law which will vary or be different (translation: “watereddown”) from the original version of the MILF. “What I think will happen is that those in the MILF who have decided to totally forego of war and conflict will accept whatever is available and those who disagree will just continue with their struggle, hence a scenario of never-ending conflict,” he predicted.

GO FEDERAL --But he has a fall-back position for the Bangsamoro in case all else fail: “let’s go FEDERAL”. His arguments were simple and clear. According to him, if a federal set-up is established in Mindanao or all over the country for that matter, what the Bangsamoro is demanding are all present in federalism. “We need not negotiate with government anymore because federalism in concept provides those arrangements,” he theorized.

He took a swipe at the dominant presence of foreigners in the peace process. “We do not need foreigners who do not understand or practice our ways to tell us what to do,” he barked. We ourselves must solve our own problems together”, he added.

UNCONSTITUTIONAL --- From his assessment, unless the Constitution is amended, the CAB cannot be implemented because the BBL that Congress may eventually pass cannot, on its own or motu proprio, amend the Constitution. The presidential system, although highly centralized and unitary, by its nature assures a “stalemate” or a gridlock because what the executive department commits ( like the CAB) does not necessarily bind the legislative ( in acting on the BBL) not to mention the judiciary. In a federal, parliamentary set-up the government speaks with one voice.

The expected Supreme Court petitions questioning whatever Congress will enact will be the final nail in the coffin of the CAB and the BBL. FALL BACK POSITION -- So where do we go from there? His answer: a federal system installed will be the fall back position.

That’s EID KABALU for you and his seeming transformation from a leading rebel leader seeking reforms by force of arms to a reform advocate working within the system. At least this is the impression I got from him during the BUC forum. I am sure there are other facets about him as

a “transformer” that I am not privy about. But in the meantime, I take him at face value.

FILINVEST LAND’s 3 quarters revenues up 28 percent

NE of the country’s

leading residential developers and BPO offices providers has registered a 28 percent increase in revenues for the first three quarters of 2014 compared to the same period last year.

Filinvest Land, Inc. (FLI) reported its revenues were up to PhP 10.81 billion from January to September, 2014 while consolidated net income jumped to PhP 2.89-Billion, from PhP 2.44-Billion over the same period in 2013, a 19 percent increase.

The company attributes the strong results to the sustained robust growth in its residential business and office leasing operations.

FLI recorded real estate revenues of PhP 9.15 Billion, 31 percent more than the PhP 6.97 Billion posted over the same period last year.

This was driven by strong sales in its horizontal housing

projects, medium-rise building projects that carry the “Oasis” brand and high-rise building projects like “Studio Zen”.

The firm is on track to launch PhP17.5 Billion in residential projects in 2014.

Among the projects launched during the first three quarters was “100 West”, a mixed-use development highrise tower with residential, retail and office components, conveniently located at Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue in Makati.

Revenues from rental assets rose to PhP 1.65 Billion, a 10 percent increase from the PhP 1.50 Billion generated over the same period in 2013, as the firm recognized additional revenues from its new office buildings “Filinvest One” and “Plaz@ E”at Northgate Cyberzone in Filinvest City, Alabang.

FLI CEO and President Josephine Gotianun Yap said that the firm will be making significant investments in its

recurring income portfolio.

“We believe that the rental business will provide the stability of revenue streams. This is why a significant amount of our capex will be earmarked for investment properties. We are looking at increasing our gross leasable area to three times our current office and retail space inventory within five years. “ Filinvest Land is a pioneer in providing office space to BPOs. “We are confident of sustained growth for the companyas we continue to launch new residential projects and execute our plans to increase offices as well as retail spaces in key locations nationwide,” she added.

In Cagayan de Oro, FLI is set to deliver the first of five buildings of One Oasis CDO, the very first mid-rise condo development of Filinvest in Cagayan de Oro City, as early as 3rd Quarter of 2015.

“Completion and delivery dates are top considerations of Filinvest Land, which sets our project apart from the rest which have a 5-year lag time,” notes Ms Ara Solidum, FLI Area General Manager for North Mindanao.

ASEAN integration to promote cheap, quality products

he Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) held its 6th Cultural and Literary Festival 2014 last December 10 to 12 inside the Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST) campus in Cagayan de Oro City.

The spectacular display of student talents was in line with PASUC’s thrust for a socio-cultural and literary impact towards Asean integration.

There were choral singings, instrumental solos, vocal solos, vocal duets, pop solos, indigenous dances, contemporary dances, hiphop dances, folk dances, search for Mr. and Miss PASUC 2014, pagsusulat ng sanaysay, dagliang talumpati, pagkukuwento, extemporaneous speech, story telling, charcoal rendering and quiz bowl.

PASUC is an association of public tertiary level

institutions in the Philippines. These comprises all 102 state universities and colleges which are under the Commission on Higher Education (Ched).

PASUC holds yearly sports, literary and musical competitions among its members.

12ft "green" Christmas tree now stands- lit with blue LED lights at Triangle area, boundaries of Barangays 21,22 and 23. This is a joint project of Miss Cagayan de Oro 2014 and Barangay 21 of barangay chair Gigi Go. This Christmas tree is made of driftwood stacked on top of each other to create a shape of a usual Christmas tree - painted in white.

The materials have been sourced out from the river banks that either been washed out by hurricanes and floods or fallen trees.

The Triangle area is now enjoying a makeover look for the holidays as Go vows to make holiday installations every year in the said area.

Reigning Miss Cagayan de Oro 2014 Bea Alvarez-Pohl on the other hand is delighted

with the partnership as their project contribution for Pasko de Oro in the city. Project consultant Gean T. Cesar said this kind of project will now become an annual collaboration project of Barangay 21 and the Miss Cagayan de Oro Committee.

re you often late in going to school? How about reporting for work? Are you also late in submitting your assignments or deadlines in the office?

Do you have the habit of being delayed or being late in most of the things you do?

If you are, you’re not alone.

I had an opportunity to transact a major deal with a foreign brand. This will make a major breakthrough for my business if I close the business deal. The deal can literary change my financial life for the better. I can say this was the opportunity of a lifetime.

We set the time and date but due to the unpredictable traffic in Metro Manila I arrived 15 minutes late. The foreign partner was patient to wait but after shaking his hand, he stood up and told me that he was going to leave.

Here was the conversation.

Chinkee: “Sir, may I ask why are you leaving? We have not yet discussed our terms.”

Foreign Partner: “You’re late!”

Chinkee: “Sir, I am sorry, I got caught at the traffic.”

Foreign Partner: “Is traffic a normal or a rare occurrence in your country?”

Chinkee: “Normal.”

Foreign Partner: “Mr. Tan, please explain to me, how can I trust you with my business if I cannot trust you with my time.”

Wooohhhhh!!!! I had no words to speak. My jaw dropped on the table. As I watched my golden ticket of opportunity walked out the meeting room. I don’t have even the guts to ask for a second chance. I was really embarrassed and at the same time, feeling full of regret because I just blew one of the biggest opportunity in my life. It was a costly lesson for me pay.

Come to think of it, it is not only the issue of being late but it is breaking the trust. You may take time lightly but some people, especially the professionals treat time as a test of a person’s character. How trustworthy is this person?

Will he fulfill whatever he promised or commit? Or will he break it?

It is so hard to rebuild trust once it is broken.

I can still remember my high school principal, she always closed her speech with this line, “If money is lost, nothing is lost. If health is lost, something is lost but when time is lost, everything is lost.”

From then on, I learned to be always early in all my meetings and speaking engagements. I have been practicing this habit for years and now I truly gained and earned dividends from it.

The reason why HR heads, companies, and organizations love to invite me as their resource speaker is because of my professionalism and punctuality.

We should know how to value our time. Time is one resource that we cannot renew or bring back.

Let us not allow time to pass by us. We got to maximize time and make the most out of it.

MISA de gallo or the practice of having a novena mass for nine dawns prior to Christmas Day is done in all Roman Catholic churches in the world but this is more prominent in the Philippines because most of us are Catholics.

During the Spanish colonization where Catholicism was introduced, farmers requested the friars to hold the novena masses at dawn so they won’t be disturbed in tilling their crops throughout the day.

(That’s Zaide 101 for you.)

But during the early times elsewhere in the world, misa de gallo is literally celebrated at midnight.

any fiesta celebration such as a novena devotion but during this particular time, violet is used by churches nationwide since this particular novena is part of the Advent season.

After mass, there are usually kakanins and other delicacies such as bibingka and puto bumbong paired with sikwate or salabat are usually served outside the church by vendors.
