THE PERKS OF A NON-WALLFLOWER

E

ver since I can remember, I refuse to just stay in the sidelines and wait for things to happen. I always make sure I help in making things done. There are a lot of advantages for doing such. First, you make full use of your time and you are able to maximize your potentials. Then, you also get to experience tasks, challenges and opportunities that test your capacities and skills. This is the most exciting part. You gauge how well you perform in given situations and then see how you fare makes all of it an insightful process. Being active also allowed me the chance to encounter various personalities, some who are like me and some who I wish I would have never met but had to nonetheless. These people I have come to work with helped me polish my personality over time. I am not yet in my ultimate form but for sure I am a work in progress. But do I get tired of being in the zone all the time? Of course, I sometimes do. There are moments where I wish that I should have been elsewhere inconspicuous and just blend in with the crowd. No worries and no stress while living carefree. I dreamt of a plain life on several occasions but then it dawned on me that I am blessed to have been given such an opportunity to be of help to other

people and live a fruitful existence. So, instead of wallowing on why I am too stressed or to dead beat, I give myself a time to breathe, recharge and go back up. I do not give in that easily anymore. I refuse to surrender to negativity because it is the right thing to do. Some might say that people like me who multitask are spotlight grabbers but I disagree. We might love the attention but the satisfaction of having accomplished so many things is what we love more. To just allow myself to fade in the background and then wonder what happened is now what I envisioned my future to be. Carpe Diem as they used to say, YOLO as the young ones say now. I believe in both and I make sure I do what good I can with my time. I may falter and get pressured with the myriad of tasks at hand but I will not stop from making things happen. Life is a choice and all it needs to prosper is the will to go on. We have our own pace in discovering what we can do with our lives. As long as we know why we do what we do, then life is good. P.S. Happy 2nd year anniversary The Cagayan de Oro Times! Thank you for allowing me to share my thoughts to the readers for the past two years now. I am grateful and honored!

HAVE MY SAY

KLAUS DORING

IS THERE A FUTURE FOR MUSIC? I love music. I can't survive without. The prostitution is incomprehensible as well as unpardonable. The music industry's future seems to become very questionable. Record companies worldwide, still keep on talking about that topic. The radical change and makeup of the complete music industry seems to be very clumsy but unwavering and obvious. We're all subjected to prevailing tastes, but especially the pop music field's spending power dwindlesand fades slowly but surely. Yes, you might not agree with me - but listen to different radio stations in your surroundings or even via live stream. Or, watch the "American Idol" or other stuff like this. The record companies are keep on spreading optimism since innumerable years, even the turnovers declined since 2005. Unbelievable, but in the United States and Great Britain, compact discs sales are still increasing, even we can download millions of tracks from the Internet. Boon or bane? Fact is: nowadays, the international music industry keeps on surviving by getting "strange" partners like "T-Online" in Germany or global "Apple", that ensured new distribution policies. Worldwide new generations grow up focusing on music like a marginal zone. Many years ago, former European VODAFONE makreting director Guy Laurence stated, "Consumers still want to buy music by listening where ever he or she is right now!"

It doesn't matter what kind of music the consumer appreciates, but it seems to be a great task for radio station carriers and the station managers simply to satisfy and let their listeners enjoy. I have been and I am still a radio host in the Philippines, and I experienced this very well. Tune in to several radio stations: it's almost the same and the same and the same again! Hold on, I am talking about the music. The playlist... . Great variety is requested. Or, sad to say, music has no future, when it comes to radio broadcasting. Yes, there might be still youngsters enjoy listening to the music of the 1970s or 1980s - or even the 1960s. And old Beatles' song seems to be the first night performance of a Goethe drama. But hey, I met a lot of youngsters enjoying the Classical Masters back to the 17th century. Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart - ever met these guys...? Let's be honest to ourselves and face it: Nowadays, music remains as a cheap extra bonus or a free gift and encore, an uncomfortable and insignificant marginal note in television or as an incredible cellphone ring tone. Music, pop or classical music loses its individual character. Sakit kaayo! I am still going on with my radio shows playing the "Old Masters" and yes, sometimes some musical slots. Am I old-fashioned? Maybe yes. Why not? Do you like Beethoven, Beach Boys, Bach, Buencamino (?), Frank Sinatra or the Apo Hiking Society? I do!

Backed by a brand new network that enables faster and more seamless browsing

experience, the Global Filipino School program will also provide City Central School superior online connectivity for the teachers to access limitless teaching and learning engagements available on the internet as well as enhanced ICT equipment and the introduction of the 21st Century Teaching Methods which will be provided to teachers through the Global Filipino Teacher Program (GFT), a 5-day teacher training workshop on Project-based Learning and ICT Integration in the classroom which was co-developed with Coalition for Better education, a non-profit organization committed to forwarding 21st Century learning through teacher training. “We are very thankful to Globe for selecting us to be the first Global Filipino School in CDO. teachers of the select schools are trained to bring 21st century learning into the classroom as well as to conduct teacher training to neighboring public schools within their division. The success of the first Global Filipino School program which was given to Bilar National High School after an evaluation with focus on school management, teacher and student development, and ability and potential to forge partnerships and collaboration with the community stakeholders for sustainable development projects in December 2012 empowered Globe to put up more Global Filipino Schools around the country starting off in Mindanao. Globe Prepaid takes strides in rebuilding the nation with initiatives that will provide education opportunities for the youth which is the core target market of Globe Prepaid. In 2013, Globe introduced Tech2Teach which is an innovative mobile learning package that uses a smartphone and a specialized SIM card powered by Globe Telecome. This allows teachers to download comprehensive educational videos in Math, Science, English and Values Education for fifth and sixth grade students. The server is hosted by Globe to allow teachers even in remote areas to access educational materials to supplement their lessons. Since then, more than one million public elementary school students and almost 3,699 teachers and school officials in 1,041 school in the country are benefiting from the said project.

“Life must go on”

- Franchize

"Life must go on," so the adage goes. And indeed it has for the resilient, ever-daring, unfearing, God-loving Leyteños and Samareños after the storm surge of typhoon Yolanda, like a thief in the night, claimed the lives of thousands of them on that fatal morning of November 8, 2013. For those who survived the tragedy -- though heartsearing to recall -- it was a battle to win and winning comes in many forms according to one's skill and talent. And so it is with Archie Malate also known as Franchize, whose heart was boldened and bursting at the seams, and his talent whetted in his endeavor to express in the God-given medium to him. Franchize, a native of Tacloban City is a self-

made rap artist, composer, and record producer, whose compositions are expressive of his feelings and delivers them with gusto. When asked if he is an artist, he shyly smiled and said, "a developing one." And so he grew and developed with the years, nurtured by his observation of those in the music industry, spending hard-earned money to attend their shows and watch their concerts in order to learn. After well-nigh 12 years his efforts are paying off. It may be recalled that Franchize has composed songs for movies, televisions, and different business entities. He has also taken under his tutelage rappers Shehyee, Harlem and Juan Lazy who have finally earned names in the local scene, having gained knowledge and experience during their time

and stint with Franchize's independent record label FLEE Entertainment. Currently, it is observed that Franchize is making a name for himself, almost fulfilling the peak of his ambition. His debut single YAKA was recently released on the digital market in preparation for his upcoming album under GMA Records. YAKA is a song he wrote dedicated to the survivors of the devastating typhoon Yolanda. This song is already on the airwaves and its music video which was directed by Dolero just recently premiered on Myx music channel. The music video was shot among the ships -- fronting his house -- which were ferociously swept ashore by the storm surge. Franchize is presently one of the ambassadors of local mobile brand My|Phone and

is also a regular performer in the company's events. Very recently, he performed at the record breaking Pusong Waray: Daniel Padilla concert in his hometown Tacloban which was attended by more than 30,000 people coming from the different towns of Region 8. "Hope springs eternal in the human breast," as it does in Franchize. His endeavors, which started from his early age were checkered with ups and downs. But like a good souldier, he never gave up, inspired by the song "if you meet with defeat try again." That's Franchize, the artist to watch in the music industry! Come follow him on his social media accounts: www. facebook.com/franchizeph, www.instagram.com/ franchizeph, and www. twitter.com/franchizeph.

WORDS AND NOTES DEBBIE CABAGUE

BETTER OR BLESSED?

S

ometimes even if you are doing what you love to do , passionately following your heart and enjoying what God is giving you at some point He will allow the pause and hit the stop button to make you evaluate on your life .The Why’s and How’s of doing such things occur once more waiting for honest answers. From time to time we get opportunities left and right ready to take us to give us “better lives” as many would say but the question is, is it always for the better life? Early this year in the midst of my busyness, an opportunity came in, an offer which many of us would actually grab it right away – to work and study abroad. I was not surprised with the offer but it did put me in deep thought for many months. I was almost convinced that it’s time for me to go but when I asked myself if there’s no higher pay, would I still go? In all honesty I said no. Though I justified my reason through studying there, I realized I can never outsmart God. He knows me more than I know myself. 1 John 2:15-17 says “Don’t love the world’s ways. Don’t love the world’s goods. Love of the world squeezes out love for the Father. Practically everything that goes on in the world—wanting your own way, wanting everything for yourself, wanting to appear important—

Dante 09177121424 John D 09269511777 Shirjean 09064730219

has nothing to do with the Father. It just isolates you from him. The world and all its wanting, wanting, wanting is on the way out—but whoever does what God wants is set for eternity.” I reflected back How God has been faithful in my career, taking care of every financial need that I had and my family. How I landed in my job that I started Four years ago as it turned out to be a calling. How can I ask for more when He’s always been there, I can’t help but feel sorry for nibbling at the table of the world for more. The devil is very deceitful, he can make the seemingly good things appear the best in life. That’s why we have to choose wisely. Yes we all want a better life, who wouldn’t want it? I don’t only want to have a better life but a blessed life until my time is up. How? The scriptures say I have to live in the triangle of God’s blessings. Blessings come from God and it is His nature to bless but I should have a personal intimate relationship with Him first. Having Faith in Him is also important because without it I can never be blessed and along with faith is obedience. This two is inseparable, faith without obedience is dead. (James 2:17) Furthermore Matthew 6:33-34 ( The Message )says 30-33 “If God gives such attention to the appearance of

wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.34 “Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes. I choose to stay because no doubt God’s calling for me is to be here. I choose to stay because I want to stay in the triangle of God’s blessings. How about you? If it’s your turn to choose will it be the “better life” or the “blessed life”? I don't want to go somewhere If I know that You're not there, 'Cause I know that me without You is a lie. And I don't want to walk that road, Be a million miles from home, Cause my heart needs to be where You are. So I don't want to go- AVALON

CAGAYAN DE ORO DESIGNERS ON MINDANAOINSPIRED DESIGNS

The Mindanao Fashion Summit 2014 opened through an all–Mindanaoan Collection and Men’s Wear Collection. First shown in the opening are the designs made by Kagayanons. First seen was designer Ann Semblante’s creations. Hers are ensemble made in the context of contemporary fashion and a touch of Mindanaoan’s wool ethnic fabric combined with shantung silk, a thin kind of cloth, usually used for

bridal gowns. Designer Alma Mae Roa, on the other hand, give out her classic barong with wooven hinabol. “Modern Lumad” describes the style of designer Angela Soriano. Her design promotes Mindanao culture through continuing the living traditions of fabric weaving, in hopes of passing it to the next generation with much value and appreciation. She called it “a traditional fabric with modern take.” Basic contemporary suit is one made by designer Benjie S. Manuel. The difference of this suit, however, is that it is combined with royal silk as accent,

inspired by the suit of Muslim men in Mindanao. Boogie Musni Rivera’s design is a diversity of Filipino barong turned into an elegant hand-painted Higaonon serpentina. In details, “sampaguita” is stressed of his idea that the flower connoted the women’s symbol of love and loyalty to each family. Gil Macaibay III design featured the looks of a Muslim woman, exposing the creation title “Hegemony over Fortune: The Muslim Queen.” John Mark Magallanes’ design is a white ensemble with blue or green hinabol accent. This partakes the merging of two kind of cultures, combining of vintage and contemporary aesthetics, inspired on geometric shapes present on most Mindanaoan culture. The weaving of livelihood of Maguindanaoan tribe is the inspiration of designer Jonnie

Navarro on his creation. It is a couture on colors red, yellow and purple. The colors are meshed together as a representation of Maguindanao’s fibrant feast. Joshua Guibone’s designs are contemporary creations, having ethnic accents. It is inspired on Mindanao vintas that are common in Zamboanga province and are graphically structured and colorful. Bukidnon’s indigenous fellowmen are the inspiration of designer Juniel Doring. He stated that IPs are also great weavers of fabric he used in his designs, the hinabol version 2.0., a fusion of thread and abaca fiber. There is new pattern and technique used, implying a pure Mindanaoan. Mark Christopher Yaranon, on the other hand, used Mindanaoan sunset as inspiration of his piece. The same to a sunset seen in Mindanao, it

is very structural in nature, a tri-colored gown with a double peplum accent, having hinabol details on the bodice and sleeves containing crystals and beads. Mavy Cooper de Leon’s piece reflects Tausug artistry and craftsmanship, more on his used fabric. It shows transformation of Mindanaoan cultural heritage to a modern yet elegant creation. Department of Tourism Regional Director Catalino “Butch” Chan III also graced the summit and applauded CDO and City Mayor Oscar Moreno for being the second competitive city in the country, next to Makati City. He said that as the same, CDO designers should not only be second, but most competitive in the Philippines; for the country is not just all about Boracay, Bohol or Baguio, for there is Cagayan de Oro to be proud of.

Richard Corcoran of the State of Florida, for topping the statewide Comprehensive Assessment Test in Mathematics .Thus, the competition also encourages parents to have their kids watch the Discovery Kids, Channel 56 on Parasat’s Silver subscription package. “Just shoot a video of your child demonstrating his/her most creative experiment and upload the video to dksciencefair@ gmail.com,” said Geli. “That’s how simple it is to join.” Discover Kids (Asia) has programs such as “Did You Know?”, “Science Trivia” and “Adventures for Kids” which encourages grade school children to have an interactive experience with science and its related fields.
