Agri worker gets P500k in Pag-IBIG raffle promo

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Lolita O. Albase, currently working at the Department of Agriculture (DA) Region 10, bagged the P500,000 cash prize of the Pag-IBIG Expanded Raffle Promo during the preliminary draw last December 21 at the Philippine International Convention Center.

A first-time winner of any raffle event, Albase, married and a mother of two, said that she read the advisory about the raffle on their human resource (HR) bulletin board and was able to submit four entry tickets.

“I was surprised, happy and I could not believe it because there are so many raffle entries nationwide,” Albase expressed upon knowing that she won a cash prize from Pag-IBIG. Albase was able to join the raffle as she contributes P2,500 for the personal share and P100 from her company. The minimum monthly savings required for members to join the raffle is P600 and above.

Pagadian police chief sacked for taping cops’ gun muzzles PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur -– The local police chief has been relieved from his post for disobeying orders from the highest official of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Relieved as city police chief was Supt. Michael Palermo. He was replaced

by Supt. Kiram Jimlani, the former deputy provincial director for operations and chief of the intelligence division.

Senior Supt. Sofronio Ecaldre, provincial police director, on Monday told the Philippines News Agency that Palermo was relieved as he ordered the taping of the gun muzzles of policemen contrary to the order of Director-General Ronald Dela Rosa, the PNP chief.

Dela Rosa has stopped the taping of the gun muzzles before Christmas Day, citing such practice did not prevent indiscriminate firing

of guns by policemen in past Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Dela Rosa decided to forgo the tapping of the gun muzzles to show to the Filipinos that the policemen are more disciplined under his stewardship.

Ecaldre said Palermo ordered the taping of gun muzzles of the local policemen despite the directive from Dela Rosa, thus, he was relieved from his post

effective December 31, 2016.

Jimlani has assured the residents of this city that he will continue to implement the programs of the PNP, especially the war against drugs of President Rodrigo Duterte.

He commended the local police force for the efforts against the sale of illegal firecracker that resulted in zero firecracker-related injury during the New Year revelries. (PNA)

Cebu to launch Sinulog festivities on January 6 THE Cebu City government is set to launch the Sinulog festivities with a mass on Friday, January 6, an official said.

Ricky Ballesteros, Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI) executive director, said the mass will be held at the Basilica Minore del Sto. Nino, home of the Sto. Nino de Cebu.

Ballesteros said this will be followed with a parade to the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) on Osmena Blvd., Cebu City.

rade will be held on January 15, Sunday, with a total of 22 dancing contingents, including four out-of-town contingents.

1st AgNor centenarian receives incentive, award

BUTUAN CITY -- Lola Conchita Hurod of Barangay Tagbongabong in the municipality of RTR, Agusan del Norte has received P100,000 as a centenarian.

Lola Conchita celebrated her 102nd birthday on December 20 of this year and she was the first centenarian grandmother who received an incentive from the provincial government of Agusan del Norte.

According to Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office chief Daisybiel Demavivas, based on the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Listahanan Database for Senior Citizens, there are already 17 centenarians in the entire province.

Demavivas said that of the 17 centenarians, only Lola Conchita complied the requirements and managed to claim her incentive and award. The other 16 centenarians did not process any claims yet, for some reasons that they no longer reside in the area or they don’t have the complete documents

yet to support their claims, Demavivas added.

Lola Conchita received a total of P100,000. The P50,000 came from the provincial government while the other P50,000 was given by governor Ma. Angelica Rosedell M. Amante-Matba.

A wheelchair was also accorded to Lola Conchita during the awarding ceremony, which was personally attended by governor Matba and witnessed by the provincial government employees during a Monday convocation held recently at the provincial capitol lobby.

Lola Conchita has four children, namely, Norma, Armando, Filomeno and Carmelita.

As per Provincial Ordinance No. 362-2014, a cash gift of P50,000 shall be given to the Centenarian upon reaching the age of 100 years old in honor of his or her longevity and to encourage other residents to stay fit and healthy. Globe conducts relief operations in Bicol Region. Globe Telecom conducted relief operations in Bicol Region provinces which were severely hit by Typhoon Nina during Christmas day. Aggie dept promotes brown rice servings

BUTUAN CITY -- In support to the campaign of consuming brown rice to help increase income of farmers and attain rice sufficiency, the Regional Agricultural and Fishery Council (RAFC) of the Department of Agriculture (DA) is recommending to all regional line agencies, bureaus and attached corporations to serve brown rice during trainings, meetings, feeding programs and other gatherings.

The Regional Development Council (RDC)- Economic Development Committee (EDC) expressed support for the advocacy of brown rice in the region through crafting a resolution.

Engr. Leonel F. Santos,

representative of RDCEDC, said that based on the study conducted by George Mateljan Foundation, converting brown rice into white rice through complete milling and polishing destroys 67 percent of Vitamin B3, 80 percent of Vitamin B1, 90 percent of Vitamin B6, 50 percent of manganese, 50 percent of phosphorus, 60 percent of iron and all the dietary fiber and essential fatty acids.

The use of ‘brown rice’ in Caraga region offers both economic and health benefits, such that it may generate greater demand for brown rice that will eventually attract farmers to produce more. Supported with effective marketing and good pricing mechanism, the ensuing rise for brown rice production will

also help improve the farmers’ income. In general, intensifying brown rice production improves rice production sufficiency in the region, bared Caraga Regional Development Council secretariat.

The health benefits that can be derived from consuming brown rice will help lessen the household’s expenditures for medicines and health services and reduce a person’s exposure to specific diseases; hence, increasing a person’s life expectancy.

Based on the report released by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (UNFAO), it is estimated that around 13.7M Filipinos are undernourished in 2016.

Apparently, the country’s undernourished population reduced only by 17.9

percent since 1990.

“Also, the Philippines is included in the top 15 countries in the world in terms of prevalence of diabetes as indicated in the International Diabetes Federal website,” added Engr. Santos.

Rodriguez, this city, consisted of assorted firecrackers and pyrotechnics such as Picolo, Giant Kwitis, 5-Star OG, imported Baby Rocket, Pop Pop, Super Lolo, Watusi and Big Mega, which were confiscated from the cities of Bayugan and Butuan.

The confiscated items from the cities of Surigao, Bislig, town of Prosperidad and other areas were left at the disposition of their local police as these will be used as part of the pieces of evidence during the filing of cases.

The total volume of confiscated firecrackers and pyrotechnics in the region, according to the PNP regional chief, reached 563,188 pieces.

Also, he announced a reduction by 57 percent of the number of firecrackerrelated injuries, as this year records only 15 as compared to 35 during the same period of last year.

All of the cases were minor injuries and were treated out of the medical facilities, police said. CSupt.

Felix clarified however that their report is unofficial as only DOH can issue the official report on the matter.

The police here in Caraga also announced a “zero” case of indiscriminate firing and stray bullet victims as of noon on January 1.

“The community reported and cooperated to the call of the authorities for the safe Yuletide and New Year celebration and (the success was) also due to the relentless pro-active measures conducted by the Department of Health and the local government units including the help of the media in information dissemination on the campaign against the use of illegal firecrackers in greeting the New Year,” Felix also said.

B3 BFAR 11 joins calls to clear Davao Gulf of garbage Wednesday, January 4, 2017

DAVAO City -- Experts from the Bureau of Fisheries and Natural Resources in Davao Region found several plastic materials, fish net, coconut lumber with nails among others in the belly of the sperm whale that beached at the Island Garden City of Samal, Davao del Norte two weeks ago.

of the BFAR 11 said these elements caused distress on the sperm whale which led to its eventual demise.

She said the current of water between IGACOS and the mainland Davao is very strong, making it a natural waterway for all types of garbage including the plastics to be carried away.

“It is the reason why we discourage residents from

throwing their garbage on the water since it will lead to the Davao Gulf areas, consequently engulfed by mammals stranded there which led to the deterioration of their health condition,” Idris said.

She encouraged residents to plant Mangroves that will certain to filter the garbage to the sea.

Idris said residents can do much by not throwing

their garbage to the sea.

“Violators will be penalized based on the Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000,” she said.

Idris said that aside from the law enforcement agencies like the Maritime Police, barangay officials are also mandated by law to impose this law on the residents for compliance. (PIA 11-Joey Sem G. Dalumpines)

Davao del Norte has placed 24 water level sensors in areas where Liboganon and Saug rivers flow through particularly in the towns of Kapalong, New Corella, Asuncion, Dujali and in Tagum City. It has also installed water level sensors in areas where tributary rivers are causing local flood particularly in Carmen, Talaingod and Sto Tomas.

Meanwhile, Compostela Valley PDRRMO Raul Villocino in a phone interview revealed that his office had kept ready its advice for all Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMOs) to activate their respective incident command post (ICP) should there be heavy downpour in the province today.

Compostela Valley PDRRMO has been monitoring since December 30, 2016 the adverse effect of intermittent rains brought about by the trough of the low pressure area (LPA).

Contrary to earlier reports, Villocino told PIA that major roads in Compostela Valley remained passable despite the raining though there were incidence of scour or erosion in portions of highways connecting the towns of Nabunturan and Maragusan, “but the road remains passable”.

He revealed that landslide reportedly occurred along the road connecting Maragusan (Compostela Valley) and Mati City (Davao Oriental),

but based on accounts of Maragusan MDRRMO, the affected portion was outside the boundary of Compostela Valley.

On the other hand, Villocino revealed that 30 families of 112 individuals in Barangay Magsaysay in the municipality of Nabunturan were evacuated on January 1, and were made to take shelter at Magsaysay Elementary School. Villocino had yet to know this morning whether the families still stayed at the evacuation center.

Pre-emptive evacuation was also conducted on December 02 in Barangay Banag-banag

in the municipality of Montevista. Villocino said evacuated residents went to their NHA (National Housing Authority) houses built for them who were victims of Typhoon Pablo.

DAVAO DEL NORTE -- The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management offices in the provinces of Compostela Valley and Davao del Norte both were on their feet the past few days due to intermittent rains that started December 30, 2016.

There was no rescue operation made nor massive evacuation in both provinces though personnel of PRDRRMOs kept their eyes glued on their monitoring system and kept their ears tuned in to calls from MDRRMOs for assistance.

In an interview this morning, Davao del Norte PDDRMO officer-in-charge Glenda Deli-deli revealed that water levels in areas closely monitored yesterday were two meters below the critical level but she said alert was raised in areas frequented with floods.

She was referring to areas where major rivers—Saug and Liboganon usually brought forth so much volume of flood waters during heavy rains.

In a separate interview, Davao del Norte PDRRMO Planning, Research and Early Warning Section Head, Eric Rosillo said that the towns of Kapalong and Talaingod heightened their information drive in communities along the riverbanks through “recoreda,” warning people of possible pre-emptive evacuation should the waters raise to a critical level.
