Oro’s biggest hotel reels from cancellations

Cagayan de Oro’s largest hotel is staggering from a series of cancellations brought about by adverse travel advisories issued by diplomatic embassies based in Manila.

In a media meeting held at the hotel 08 September, Jerome dela Fuente, hotel general manager of Limketkai Luxe Hotel, admitted business has slowed to a trickle following the publication of adverse travel advisories arising from the Davao bombing last week and the president’s declaration placing the country under a “state of lawlessness”.

Maglaya said that the partnership will help the OFWs and their families start a business and have the option to either pursue it and remain in the country for good or continue working abroad and leave the business to their families or relatives.

DTI-Agusan Norte destroys 2,892 substandard products BUTUAN CITY – As a result of the Department of Trade and Industry’s intensified monitoring, 2,892 pieces of sub-standard products valued at P481,483 were confiscated from various establishments in the province of

Agusan del Norte.

The substandard goods were subsequently destroyed on July 20, 2016 at the Covered Court of Barangay Doongan here in the presence of 95 individuals composed of representatives from DTI-Regional and

Provincial Offices, Doongan Barangay Captain Gilberto Enriquez, Konsumador Hong Butuan, store owners and local media practitioners. The products included 434 pcs. plywood, 1,048 pcs. assorted Christmas lights, 63 pcs. monobloc

chairs, 74 pcs. assorted extension wires, 8 pcs.

THE celebration of National Teachers Month officially started every September 5. It is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No 242 and Republic Act 1073. Of course, the celebration in the country will coincide with World Teachers Day which will be celebrated every October 5 by the Unesco and all membercountries which include the Philippines of course.

For this year, the theme

of the celebration will be Guro Kabalikat sa Pagbabago to show appreciation to those who are in the teaching profession not just by students but all members of the academic community in each school, whether private or public.

Teachers are very hardworking individuals and I personally say that it is the duty of every citizen to show appreciation to the persons who have molded us into responsible adults. After

Reaching out to out-of-school youth

THERE’s something fulfilling to the heart of a teacher if he or she reaches out to out-of-school children. Even though basic education in the Philippines is free from kindergarten to senior high school, there are still some children who opt out of school because they simply don’t have baon or can’t afford to pay assorted miscellaneous fees such as uniforms, bags and

notebooks perhaps Here in the country, we abound with various civicminded groups who are engaged in helping out-ofschool youth through tutorials. These are mostly targeted to school-age children who are hesitant to enrol in ALS or Alternative Learning System because they are too shy. So they attend what are so-called street tutorials where Education students from universities

and colleges in the locality reach out to the streets to teach the children basics in mathematics, science and even English, the global language.

These tutorials are also alternately called “reading on wheels” since volunteers carry with them voluminous books to read out to the students. Most of these reading materials are donated. It’s basically bayanihan at work and that’s good. After all, each child has the right to be literate even when he or she is not in school.

Increased wages of kasambahays through skills training RA 10361 otherwise known as the “Kasambahay or Domestic Workers Act”, institutionalizes policies for the protection and welfare of the domestic workers was signed into law on January 18, 2013. It provides the minimum pay scales and other benefits of the kasamabahays giving increased concern for domestic workers which was seemingly set aside in the past. Contract of Employment is among its highlights containing the terms and conditions of work including wages, scope of work, hours of work, social benefits and other details that should be agreed by the parties.

In Northern Mindanao, kasambahays working in the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Ozamis, Malaybalay, Iligan and 1st class municipalities in the region are paid the minimum wage of P 2,000.00 per month; for those working in other municipalities in the region, a minimum monthly

basic wage is P 1,500.00; and P2,500.00 is given to kasambahays employed in NCR. The RTWPB-X informs the public that the basic wage of kasambahays as mandated by RA 10361 can be increased through competency-based trainings provided by TESDA. This competency-based adjustment in basic wages will encourage the kasambahays to develop their skills and achieve competency certificates confirming their mastery of skills, gained knowledge and further skills development that will allow them to venture overseas employment or even as future entrepreneurs.

The National Certification II (or NC II) is issued by TESDA for the kasambahays who graduated from skills training and passed the competency test requirements on basic domestic jobs like: cleaning services including the living room, dining room, bedrooms, toilet, kitchen; washing and

ironing clothes, linen, fabric; preparing hot and cold meals/food, providing food and beverage service and others. Criteria included in the competency-based increases in wages include: National Certification II of the TESDA; passed the demonstration of learned skills; actual application of learned competencies to work; and the existing market rate for skilled household workers. Under RA 10361, employers are

encouraged to bear the cost of training, assessment, or certification fees unless there is prior agreement between parties. Reasons of increase other than skills competencies include but not limited to: length of service, work attitude, trustworthiness and others including loyalty and others that employers may define if he favors the services of the kasambahay.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Albeit constant drizzles from the gray sky above Plaza Divisoria in the cold and wet afternoon last Wednesday, cries of Concerned Kagay-anons opposing the late dictator’s burial at the Libingan ng Mga Bayani resonated without hindrance.

A group composed of members from the academe, the church, the youth and non-government organizations in CDO, Concerned Kagay-anons protested against considering Ferdinand Marcos Sr., notorious for his Martial Law declaration in a 20-year-regime, a hero who deserves a burial of one.

“We oppose the burial of the Dictator Ferdinand Marcos in the Libingan ng Mga Bayani because Marcos is no hero,” said Victoria Melissa Pulido, an alumna of Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan, and presently a formator for Kristonahong

A Passionate Teacher

Passionate teachers can, and do, change lives. They can light candles in the darkest mind. They can mold beliefs and behaviors, setting an example to follow. They always set high standards. They are not merely benevolent, kindly parental substitutes; they want to bring the best out in their students. They do not compromise but they do encourage.

They understand the learning process and the markers along the way.

They are able to get the best out of the people they teach and it is often for this that they are profoundly admired. They are recognized by their commitment of attaining high for the welfare of the learners. They know that it is their responsibility to uplift learners for an active learning and concern themselves with promoting students’ intellectual and moral development.

They constantly update material and methods. Every generation needs a new introduction to a discipline. Pupils come with diverse experiences and expectations. Their hot (and cold) buttons are peculiar to them. They need to be approached differently.

The inspirational teacher must therefore always be in fashion. It goes without saying that they have to update their own knowledge as well.

Passionate teachers are those who make significant changes in the lives of every learner.

Their faith and zealous effort helps every individual realize their inner values and bewitch us.

Passion contributes to teacher’s motivation and performance. Passionate teachers have an effect on student achievement.

There is a strong correlation between passionate teaching and successful student learning.

“Wala mi kabalo nganong gi dakop siya, unsa’y kaso, unsa’y violations.” (We never knew why he was arrested without a case filed against him. We didn’t know the violations he may have committed.)

She recounted that every summer since then, she would go with her grandmother at Camp Evangelista and present her father’s picture – but to no avail. When she turned six, she hoped her father would return or be found when she’d reach 25 or 30. But this year, she continues hoping.

“Hangtod karon, wala mi kabalo kung buhi siya or patay or unsa.” (Until now, we don’t know if he is still alive or dead; we don’t know what happened to him.)

Among the documented 75,000 victims of human rights violations in that period, Buntag is convinced that her father is one of them when her mother filed his case to the Commission on Human Rights. She honors her memory of him with the memorial of the Bantayog ng mga Bayani in Quezon City.

She stressed further that the violations committed by Marcos and his family by allowing abusive military rule such as that which took her father were proofs that Ferdinand Marcos Sr., does not deserve a hero’s burial in LNMB. Religion was no exemption Arnold Van Vugt, a former Carmelite priest who came from the Netherlands and lived in the Philippines during the reign of Marcos, remembered the time when he was accused of leading a strike when he was assigned in Iligan City as a Social Action Director for the Diocese.

“I am really a Filipino by heart,” he said during the Torch Rally and Solidarity Prayer. “I was involved in strikes in Iligan (during the Martial Law) and because of that, I was accused of organizing them and was deported.”

The Martial Law, considered by Carmelite missionaries as a critical time in the Philippines, troubled Church initiatives and claimed lives working closely with their missions. A certain Fr. Engelbert Van Vilsteren was one among those killed on January 16, 1973 in Agusan del Sur after volunteering to retrieve the body of a dead teacher who was also killed during a plebiscite by the late dictator.

“Marcos did not allow anyone to go on strikes,” Van Vugt recollected. “So, I was deported back to Holland.

When I returned here, I was at the airport when I found out that my name was listed under the undesirable aliens.”

Van Vugt was sent to Hong Kong after he was denied

entry, but with the efforts of bishops and fellow priests, he was able to return to the Philippines.

“I was even imprisoned.

Marcos is no hero,” the former priest said. “He is a bastard.”

Remembering history Former KKP-SIO Director Ermin Stan Pimentel spoke of the dangers of historical revisionism when he had seen the effects of Martial Law to communities in Claveria which had been declared as a militarized zone.

He was in fourth year high school when a certain Fr. Columbus had called for the youth in Xavier University who had been willing to go with him in these zones to investigate the shocking occurrences that had often affected children and the elderly.

“Ang kapa-it kani-adto kay ang mga kataohan, mga bata, tiguwang, mga ginikanan ug tanan nga mga lumulupyo sa lugar kay mahadlok.” (What’s troublesome was the fear of the people, the children, the elderly, the parents and everyone residing in the area.)

From what they had discovered, Pimentel shared that there had been lifeless bodies sprawled in every municipality and that these had been victims of the militarization.

These bodies were believed to have been those accused of being enemies of Marcos’ regime without credible proof.

Working in the academe, Pimentel pointed out the importance of an educator’s obligation to teach the next generation of learners about history’s untarnished and inarguable truths.

Convinced with historical truth, Christian Balid, a KKP-SIO student volunteer, recited his solidarity message representing the youth amidst banners and posters painted with words denying Marcos’ burial in the LNMB. “Kami nasayod nga wala pa mi sa panahon sa Martial Law, wala pa mi naka eksperinsiya sa mga makalisang nga gi-agian sa mga Pilipino nga na biktima adtong panahona.

The Enterprise Development and Loan Program, formerly the P2 billion OFW Reintegration Program, is the most important part for OFWs’ social preparation upon their return to the Philippines, according to OWWA Administrator Rebecca Calzado.

Calzado said that the partnership will help provide options for the OFWs to pursue business over overseas employment.

“This is what the MOU is all about—for returning OFWs who wish to find an alternative to overseas employment. These are programs that the government can offer,” said Calzado.

In coordination with DTI-ROG, OWWA will sustain promotion of MSMEs as part of the entrepreneurship development component of the Reintegration Program for OFWs; organize entrepreneurship development trainings and related activities, and refer OFWs or their families who intend to venture in businesses to DTI

for access to training; make available its business loan program for OFW ventures in business either for expansion or start-up operations; and ensure the support of its Regional and Overseas Offices in the promotion of MSMEs among prospective OFW-entrepreneurs.
