BUTUAN CITY – The Metrobank Foundation, Inc. (MBFI) yesterday (September 5, 2016) conferred on Mrs. Josephine Chonie Obsenares of the Butuan City Special Education (SPED) Center and nine other school mentors from all over the

country as awardees in the 2016 Search for Outstanding Teachers at ceremonies at the Metrobank Plaza, Makati City.

The awardees each received a trophy and cash prize of P500,000.

Obsenares won in the elementary category.

From a total of 534 nominations

in the 2016 Search, 10 teachers including Obsenares emerged winners. According to MBFI, the nominees were trimmed down to 127 provincial finalists, then shortlisted to 40 regional finalists who underwent teaching demonstrations and panel interviews before the preliminary board of

judges of each category. This year’s Search garnered the most nominations in its 32-year history.

Ensuring academic success through the involvement of stakeholders

The engagement of the stakeholders in the school activities and programs is considered vital to the success and improvement of the school and its proponent. The involvement of the broader community of the school with it can better advance communication and public understanding and further allow its members to improve reform proposals, strategies and processes for the betterment and common good of all the pupils, the teaching and non-teaching personnel, the parents, and of course, the community.

Parent, family and community involvement can have a different meaning to different people, its meaning and understanding may vary from one person to the other. A research-based framework developed by Joyce Epstein of John Hopkins University describes six (6) types of involvement

that includes: One, parenting. Stakeholders, the parents should help families by providing and guiding them with the parenting skills and family support, further make them understand the phases of child development, its complexities and ways to cope with it. They should help schools understand backgrounds and cultures of families and their goals for children.

Second, communicating.

There should be a creation of reliable communication channels between school and home to communicate with families about school programs and pupil progress.

Third, volunteering.

Stakeholders should likewise enable educators to work with volunteers who support pupils and the school. Involve families as volunteers and as audiences at the school.

Duties of a school registrar

A registrar is an official in an academic institution who handles student records. Typically, a registrar processes registration requests, schedules classes and maintains class lists, enforces the rules for entering or leaving classes and keeps a permanent record of grades and marks.

The education system in either elementary or secondary here in the Philippines is a complex machine full of moving parts from student enroll-

ment procedures to class schedule maintenance to the proper recording of grades and rankings. For the machine to function properly, someone has to process and preserve that information so it is easily accessible.

The registrar’s primary responsibilities are the same – to log and maintain enrolled students’ academic records. This includes grade, attendance, transfer and immunization records. The registrar oversees the enrollment process for new students, gathering all required information while also co-

Fourth, learning at home.

Encourage the involvement of families in their children’s academic learning at home through curriculum-related activities such as including homework and goal setting.

Fifth, decision making.

Likely stakeholders should make families participants in school decisions, governance and advocacy activities.

Six, collaborating with the community. Coordinate resources and services for families, pupils and the school with community groups such as businesses, cultural and civic organizations.

These as the involvement of the broader community of a school leads to higher academic performance and schools improvement because when the school, parents, families and the community work together to support learning, pupil feels more encouraged, and they tend to attend school more regularly as they are being inspired by the idea

that everyone around them seems to be so supportive in their daily endeavours.

Likely, this involvement is a key to addressing school drop-out crisis and in the other way around, it will build strong partnerships that will better foster higher educational aspirations and more motivated pupils.

That is why, as the School Head of Salay Central School, it has been always my ardent dream and aspiration to see successful pupils in the future and in order to attain this, I together with the teaching and non-teaching staff, always uphold the value to involve stakeholders to any school activity and endeavour, so as to better ensure academic success among pupils. that she is waiting for further instructions from President Rodrigo Duterte as to what the DSWD should be in the lives of returning OFWs. At the onset, she said that the DSWD can consider putting together a plan of action to provide immediate assistance to the OFWs even as other government agencies are doing the same. “Pres.

Duterte has instructed the DSWD to include OFWs in the protective services of the department,” she said.

“What is important in the immediate is to reach out to all stranded OFWs suffering in camps all over the KSA and determine means to help them survive their ordeal until they can return home, “ she said.

Sustainable water supply within the community’s reach A bright smile is reflected on the face of a village woman in Barangay Bacay II in Veruela, Agusan del Sur, while she gently swishes her laundry through the sudsy water she had collected and stored in the tank days ago with their rainwater harvesting system. A few years back, doing the laundry with such convenience for residents in the area would have not been possible.

Before, the community endured and suffered the lack of sustainable water supply and access to safe drinking water. Some residents of the barangay were forced to walk a few kilometers since the nearest water source is distant.

Establishing better school health education

School health programs and education are said to be one of the most efficient strategies that an institutions might use to prevent major health problems and social problems among Filipino pupils. Next to the family, schools are the major institution responsible and accountable in providing the on-hand instruction and experiences to the pupils.

It has always been a better idea to better educate the pupils on school health and proper personal hygiene, thus, further integrating this scheme to reduce and/ or minimize absenteeism among pupils.

School health services are provided to students to appraise, protect, and promote health. These services are designed to ensure access and/or referral to primary

health care services, foster appropriate use of primary health care services, prevent and control communicable diseases and other health problems, provide emergency care for illness or injury, promote and provide and provide optimum sanitary conditions for safe school facilities and environment, and better provide educational and counselling opportunities for the promotion and maintenance of individual, family, and community health.

Hence, Salay Central School has always been on the frontline in reminding and guiding our pupils to better secure proper personal hygiene for their own good. Thus, Salay CS has been very serious in implementing the Essential Health Care Program (EHCP) of the Department of Education.

With the able knowledge of our teachers as implementers, our pupils has always been guided accordingly, leaving that they will not only practice daily tooth brushing and daily hand washing only at school but in their homes. It is best if we could integrate these reminders in every learning and subject area.

As we promote and advocate healthy pupils, we likewise encourage also our dear parents to do the same at home. As better discipline starts at home, the best partners of the implementers would be the parents. And still it is a continuous and a teamwork process.

As statistics shows that one of the reasons why pupils are absent from school is due to having sickness, the Department has also institutionalized the EHCP to better combat the pressing issue of absenteeism.

And more likely, it is of best

knowledge and pride having not only healthy pupils but clean ones as well.

Salay Central School always capacitates to serve best its pupils and the community. Hence, all the programs of the Department of Education has been fully adopted and has been fully implemented by such so as to apply and implement its best programs and practices, of course, for the betterment and welfare of all our pupils.

And one of the schemes to achieve academic success among our pupils is by institutionalizing and establishing better school health education, not only for our pupils but for the teachers and the non-teachers as well as the parents and the community. Because of this, they sometimes fetch water from dug wells. Without access to clean drinking water, residents were susceptible to water-borne diseases. When the KalahiCIDSS program came into their barangay, the community unanimously decided to propose this sub-project as solution to their needs.

Now, with their rainwater harvester the community has an improved water supply and a sustainable source of potable water since each facility can store up to 2,000 liters of rainwater which they can use for their daily consumption.

Residents of the barangay are jubilant since they will be able to utilize their 146 installed rainwater harvester for domestic uses such as drinking, bathing, washing clothes and many others. The

Globe, PNP sign MOU to operate Text Bato hotline for crime prevention Globe Telecom signed a memorandum of understanding with the Philippine National Police to operate Text 2286 (Bato), a SMS hotline providing an access for the public to directly report incidents to PNP Director General Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa.

police personnel concerned.

THE Department of Health (DOH-10) this morning formally turned-over “Olyset Nets” to the city government of Cagayan de Oro. City Mayor Oscar Moreno, with the members of the City Council headed by Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin V. Uy, received the nets during the flag raising ceremony.

Olyset nets are treated nets intended for windows and doors of the classrooms to prevent mosquitoes from getting in, thereby protecting school children from mosquito bites. The nets can kill mosquitoes but are not dangerous to humans, said the DOH. These nets are not avail-

able in the market, The Power learned.

According to the DOH, about 319 rolls of Olyset Nets at P7,500 per roll with a total cost of P2.3 million, were received last month.

Priority recipients are public daycare, kindergarten, elementary and high school classrooms in barangays

included in the top 25 with dengue cases.

In line with this, the DOH is set to conduct orientation on the use of Olyset nets among barangays, school principal and teachers, and PTA Officials.

The revised Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to be executed by and between the City Government of Cagayan de Oro and the Department

Under the said MOA, the city government shall fully comply with provisions such as the submission of the monthly and quarterly accomplishment reports of the project to DA-10 every 20th day of the month, as well as the terminal report within 30 days after the completion of the project, financial reports every 10th day of the succeeding month with or without payment made, creation and maintenance of a special trust account and the provision of the required BuB Cash coun-

terpart funds to be used for new projects identified by the LPRAT. On the part of the DA10, it shall issue the Certificate of Availability of Funds (CAF) for the total DA equity to the city government upon obligation of the funds and upon written

request of the local chief executive.

It shall, likewise, release the budgetary requirements of the project to the city government subject to the existing accounting and auditing laws, rules and regulations of the government, among others.(JAO)

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- In its aim to raise the bar of excellence among practicing journalists in the country, the Metrobank Foundation, in partnership with the PROBE Media Foundation held the 7th Media Training series on Digital Journalism at Garden Orchid Hotel here recently.

Ms. Yasmin MapuaTang, executive director of PROBE Media believes that stories can change lives.

“Our thrust is communication for positive social change,” she declared.

The training brought together the Metrobank Journalists of the Year (JOY) Awardees 2015: Ms. Marites

D. Vitug, editor-at-large of Rappler; Ms. Luz Rimban, executive director, Asian Center for Journalism and trustee of Vera Files; and Ms. Nancy Carvajal, formerly with the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Banking on the expertise of the 2015 JOY awardees as well as through the technical assistance of PROBE Media Foundation, Mr. Chito M. Sobrepeña, president of Metrobank Foundation in a virtual message said this is their humble contribution to empower media professionals and develop their skills through powerful reportage.

“Contrary to the belief that the digital age will diminish the importance

of journalists, you have become even more significant as gatekeepers and processors to help make more sense of the information we read online,” he emphasized.

In a very pleasant discussion, Ms. Vitug shared insights on how to embrace the new media environment and staying relevant.

“Journalism after all is part of the national conversation. We need to enrich these dialogues with facts and well-researched stories. We have to provide light rather than heat,” the veteran journalist shared.

DAVAO CITY -- The Commission on Human Rights and the Department of Education in the region strongly condemned the bombing incident at Roxas Night Market along the city’s Roxas Ave. last September 2.

Both agencies expressed deepest sympathies and condolences, and offered prayers to all victims and their families “for this senseless violence.”

“There can never be any justification for an attack on

innocent and defenseless civilians – children, women and men,” a CHR-11 press release stated.

“We stand with the people of Davao City and we will continue to work with the authorities in order that the full force of the law will be applied against the persons responsible for these grave human rights violations,” it further said.

The press release also bared that the Commission has created a fact finding team that will conduct its own inquiry and monitor

developments thereon and extend any possible assistance to the victims.

DepEd-11 Regional Director Alberto Escobarte said the agency is one with the nation in strongly condemning the bombing incident.

A junior high school lass of Liceo de Cagayan University was adjudged Miss Opol 2016 last Saturday.

Erika Glaiza Tablizo, fondly called Kay-kay by people close to her, was the beautiful maiden representing barangay Malanang bested 14 other deserving candidates in the pageant which was part of the 2nd Opol Ostrich Festival.

Known for its fine beaches, not many people know that Opol town in Misamis Oriental is also home to the largest ostrich farm in this part of the country.

If you want to be awed and experience the thrill of being in the middle of a nest of giant birds, then come to the ostrich farm in Opol.

in none other than Tablizo’s beautiful home village of Malanang.

Owned by the Limketkai family in Cagayan de Oro City, the ostrich farm is

a food-producing business yet at the same time a tourist spot. The farm features more than ostriches – it also has 50 crocodiles, peacocks, Chinese chicken, sheep

and hyacinth Macau parrots.

The farm, which opened in 1966, are visited by tourists and Cagayanons on family or friend getaways mostly on

weekends. In 2015, the local government of Opol led by Mayor Maximino Seno instituted an annual Ostrich Festival to give homage to the unique tourist spot found only

in their town.

Ostrich meat is good for healthconscious people since they are low in cholesterol, fat and calories compared to chicken.
