CHANGE: Political issues, personal journey art exhibit FOR the Oro Arts Guild, a group of local artists in Cagayan de Oro, CHANGE has become a household name, something that everybody aims for since President Rodrigo Duterte came to office and more so, an inspiration for an art exhibit. Every August, the Oro Arts Guild put in their efforts for an art exhibit, in time for city fiesta. This time, they have chosen the word Change because it signifies the changes in the country and of course the change each artist feels in their lives. Oscar Floirendo of Xavier University Center for Culture and Arts (XUCCA) and member of Oro Arts Guild explained that the team has come up with this theme CHANGE this year because this has been a rallying cry for most people who are tired of the status quo. A total of nine artists participated in the Cagayan de Oro leg of My City My SM My Art for this year. A celebration of Philippine visual arts, My City My SM My Art is a showcase of works of master, modernists and millennials in a specific city where SM has a mall presence. In partnership with the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA), director Brillante Mendoza’s Center Stage Production, Shell Philippines and Metropolitan Museum of Manila, My City My SM My Art in Cagayan de Oro features works of the following artists: Abdulmari Asia Imao, Oscar Floirendo, Michael Bacol, Christopher Gomez, Nicolas Aca Jr., Nonoy Estarte, Jake Vamenta, Errol Balcos and Michelle Lua. As a painter and sculptor, Imao infused traditional Islamic design with modernist patterns, resulting in vivid works

that yearn for local color and the dream of a unified nation. Known for his unique adaptation of traditional Mindanaoan motifs – the ukkil, the naga and the sarimanok, combining all of these with cubism. Imao’s efforts got him the conferment as National Artist for Sculpture in 2006. His son Toym, whose name was inspired from the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines annual awards, is also an artist in his own right. Toym, who follows the footsteps of his father, can be found in major cities in the Philippines, Vietnam, the United States and Europe.
