CHANGE: Political issues, personal journey art exhibit FOR the Oro Arts Guild, a group of local artists in Cagayan de Oro, CHANGE has become a household name, something that everybody aims for since President Rodrigo Duterte came to office and more so, an inspiration for an art exhibit.

Every August, the Oro Arts Guild put in their efforts for an art exhibit, in time for city fiesta. This time, they have chosen the word Change because it signifies the changes in the country and of course the change each artist feels in their lives.

Oscar Floirendo of Xavier University Center for Culture and Arts (XUCCA) and member of Oro Arts Guild explained that the team has come up with this theme CHANGE this year because this has been a rallying cry for most people who are tired of the status quo. A total of nine artists participated in the Cagayan de Oro leg of My City My SM My Art for this year.

A celebration of Philippine visual arts, My City My SM My Art is a showcase of works of master, modernists and millennials in a specific city where SM has a mall presence.

In partnership with the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA), director Brillante Mendoza’s Center Stage Production, Shell Philippines and Metropolitan Museum of Manila, My City My SM My Art in Cagayan de Oro features works of the following artists: Abdulmari Asia Imao, Oscar Floirendo, Michael Bacol, Christopher Gomez, Nicolas Aca Jr., Nonoy Estarte, Jake Vamenta, Errol Balcos and Michelle Lua. As a painter and sculptor, Imao infused traditional Islamic design with modernist patterns, resulting in vivid works

that yearn for local color and the dream of a unified nation. Known for his unique adaptation of traditional Mindanaoan motifs – the ukkil, the naga and the sarimanok, combining all of these with cubism. Imao’s efforts got him the conferment as National Artist for Sculpture in 2006.

His son Toym, whose name was inspired from the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines annual awards, is also an artist in his own right. Toym, who follows the footsteps of his father, can be found in major cities in the Philippines, Vietnam, the United States and Europe.

But the worst of the two disciples, they forgot the words of promises of Jesus for them. They never believed that Jesus resurrected after three days. They made Jesus a liar in that way, but anyway, they were very emotional at the time and

needed to be understood.

This means that in time of troubles and doubts recall and remember the miraculous works of God in your life in the previous events of your journey for you to be fueled by the passion to move forward.

This was the mistakes of these two men because they focused on the death of Jesus but never to his promised resurrection.

VICE Mayor Raineir Joaquin Uy referred to appropriate committees for further study the resolution filed by Councilors Edna Dahino, Annie Daba and Suzette Magtajas-Daba, which aims to boost the city’s cleanliness drive.

The councilors proposed a resolution urging residents to regularly clean the surroundings of their respective residences and establishments by removing trash, dirt and graffiti; clearing unwanted weeds, bushes and shrubs, or cleaning

canals and drains.

The legislators also want barangay councils to initiate and institutionalize monthly clean-up drive in their respective areas of jurisdiction and the City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (CLENRO) to strictly require the contractor hauling solid wastes of the city to extend frequently and consistently the services of its garbage trucks to barangays.

For his part, Councilor Enrico Salcedo, called for the implementation of Ordinance No. 8975-2003, which mandates waste segregation at source.

He said it is about time that this be fully implemented in the city to give impetus to the cleanliness drive and for the protection of the environment.

Camiguin dried squid project bags Best SSF Award M A M B A J A O , CAMIGUIN -- The Kahugpungan sa Masilakong Mananagat (KASAMMA) received the Best Shared Service Facility (SSF) Award during the Negosyo, Konsyumer Atbp. (NKA) event held in Cagayan de Oro City on 17-19 August 2016.

The NKA is just one of the series of “One DTI Services” national caravan which aims to heighten the awareness of the public, especially the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and consumers about the services offered by DTI. DTI Undersecretary Zenaida Maglaya, DTI-10 Regional Director Linda Boniao and Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar S. Moreno handed the award of recognition to the association’s manager Teresita Ocaba together with other awardees in Northern Mindanao.

KASAMMA is a recipient of DTI Camiguin’s SSF project in 2014. It was chosen as the Best SSF awardee besting other 20 SSF recipients in Camiguin on the basis of criteria set more particularly on the full utilization of the equipment provided to them leading to the outcomes like increase in production volume, mar-

ket development, growth in sales, jobs generated and number of beneficiaries that has been benefitted of the SSF project.

It is an association located in Sagay town, Camiguin, registered in the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on January 2000 with a total of 70 members, mostly composed of fisher folks and their wives.

DTI noted on the success of their products, the sun dried fish and squid, to the local market, tourists and even to traders from outside the province like Cebu, Bohol, Cagayan de Oro and Bukidnon.

T h ro u g h t h e S S F p ro j e c t , K A S A M M A was able to procure good manufacturing practices (GMP) compliant drying and vacuum packaging equipment to enhance the quality of their food products by eliminating the foul odour, increasing its shelf life, standardizing the weights/measures and mechanizing the drying process to be able to cope with market demand even during rainy season.

undertones. He said not all are pro Duterte in their group and some are with reservations but when it comes to change they are hopeful that altogether it is for the good.

He said there is a positive feeling looking forward to the next years ahead of the administration. And that there will be genuine change, be it government services such as the Land Transportation Office (LTO), those simple things are really felt in the grassroots.

Floirendo said we always keep on saying change but we have to start with ourselves. Simple changes can be simply following traffic rules among others.

People must also change outlook when it comes to art. He said people should support local artists. He said now the perception is that it’s more valid to buy art in Manila than here.

There must be a change in perception by patronizing local artists in your community. Currently, they are 15 in the group; they hope to have new members soon.

Various artworks are displayed in the Museo de Oro of Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan campus in Cagayan de Oro City. Floirendo designed an interactive board game where five balls of different colors representing the five presidentiables in the country and you maneuverer them through a maze going to the top in the white house. Whoever goes first is the President you wish to win.
