Filinvest to build P500-M school for Mindanao The Andrew Gotianun Foundation, Inc. (AGFI) has inked a Memorandum of Understanding with a pledge of Php500 million to the Educational Research and Development Assistance (ERDA) Foundation and Xavier University to put up a Technical-Vocational High School for scholars at the PHIVIDEC Industrial Estate in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental.

The school, which will be called Andrew L. Gotianun, Sr. Center for Integrated Technologies, Xavier University, is envisioned to produce graduates who are world-ready, with international standard competencies, and spiritual and social

commitment.

AGFI shall finance the construction of the school buildings, workshops, and dormitories, as well as the provision of furniture and other equipment, IT, Tech-Voc machinery and transport vehicles. The Foundation also commits to partly finance the annual operating costs of the senior high school for the first five years of operations so all its students can attend as full, live-in scholars.

Dedicated to the memory of Filinvest Founder Andrew L. Gotianun, Sr., the school represents his advocacy for education and his commitment to the progress of Mindanao.

ILIGAN CITY - Each year, a competition for the best tasting lechon in Iligan City is held, as a way of thanksgiving to the patron Saint Michael the Archangel.

Different “Lechon Hauses” are competing in the Lechon Festival.

A total number of 26 lechons were displayed last September 22, at the Anahaw Amphitheater in Iligan

City.

The program started at 3: 00 p.m. for the displays of different “Lechon Hauses” of the said city.

This event was spearheaded by Ms. Emily Pascua of Alrose Group of Companies in partnership with the Department of Tourism of Iligan City and the head of Diyandi Festival Councilor Sorilie Bacsarpa.

A kindergarten which literally means “garden for the children” is a preschool educational approach traditionally based on playing, singing, practical activities such as drawing and social interaction as part of transition from home to school. The first such institutions were created in the late 18th century in Bavaria and Strasbourg to serve children both of whose parents worked out of the home. The term was coined by German educator Friedrich Frobel whose

approach globally influenced early-years education. Today, the term is used in many countries to describe a variety of educational institutions and learning spaces for children ranging from two to seven years of age based on a variety of teaching methods.

In the Philippines, education officially starts at the elementary level and placing children into early childhood education through kindergarten is optional to parents until recently with the implementation of the K-12 program. Early

Brigada sa Kalinisan and Dengue Prevention Campaign of Mahayag Elementary School

Dengue fever is a killer disease. It is viral illness diseases transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. Many of the children’s live have gone because of the said disease. In statistics, there were 5, 044 cases in Northern Mindanao as of 2016.

In response to the alarming situation, DepED Region X implemented the campaign “ Brigada sa Kalinisan and Dengue Prevention Campaign” to promote dengue preven-

tive and control measures throughout the schools. As part of the implementing institution, Mahayag Elementary School immediately conducted a plan to implement the said campaign. The school head of MES together with the stakeholders intensively create a matrix on the campaign activity which will conducted on the school.

On the day of implementing the campaign, the school have initiated an opening program and conducted an orientation

on the Dengue Prevention. After the program, the Brigada sa Kalinisan was started together with the pupils, teachers, parents, barangay officials and other stakeholders participated on the said activity.

It has been a wonderful activity and it gave light to all participants that the origin of dengue disease is the failure of human’s role in maintaining the environment to be safe and clean. Thus dengue disease will prevent if everyone knows their responsibility in living on this world.

As for the Table set-up competition, two schools participated, namely, MSU – IIT and ICI. The criteria for judging should be that the Lechon will brand or promote Iligan City. First, the crispiness is at 40%, taste & aroma is at40% and physical appearance is at 20% for a total of a 100%. And, for formality, the Lechon should be 25-30 kilos.

Since the event was open to the public, a total number of 500 samples were prepared with the tickets distributed all around Iligan City prior to the event.

Aside from the judging of Lechon, competitions for the table set-up were included with the design and concept at 40%, Creativity at 30% and Relevance to the theme (fiesta) at 30% for a total of 100%. The table set-up is only limited to bonafide students per team.

The winners for the different competitions were then announced later that afternoon. The winner for the table set-up competition was from the HRM students of MSU-IIT who were given the cash prize of P5, 000.

While the winner for the best Lechon was from Peping’s Lechon Haus who then received the plaque.

The purpose of this event, dubbed as “Pista sa Lechon de Iligan,” is to promote or brand the Lechon made from the good City of Iligan compared to those other cities in the Philippines as well as to boost the Tourism Industry of this good city. “The farmers are more inspired in seeing the construction of the farm-toroad as it will shorten travel time in transporting goods between barangays Taganahaw and San Isidro,” said Mayor Manpatilan.

Travel between the two barangays takes seven kilometers of tough roads and most of the time, goods are partly damaged when they reach the market.

“We have long been waiting for this concrete road. Transport of farm products will be substantially shortened from seven to only one kilometer.

Residents of my village and Barangay Tag-anahaw will benefit from this project especially the children who walk to and from school,”

said San Isidro Barangay Captain Ferdinand Lazaga.

The 1.4 kilometer farm-to-market road that has 230 hectares influence area will benefit the two communities including indigenous people (IP).

Rice, corn, banana, and other high-value crops are grown in the area.

The Department of Agriculture has been keen in monitoring its infrastructure projects. “We will always stick to the guidelines set for PRDP projects. What we are asking from the local government units is to help us monitor these ongoing projects,” said alternate IBUILD Head Engr. Gilbert Ken Zaportiza.

Residents and barangay officials have been active in monitoring the project.

“We are glad that we are part of this project. People from RPCO and the contractor consider our side for its smooth implementation,” said Lazaga.

Improving Reading Comprehension Through Multimedia Reading Activity

This innovation aims to describe the improvement of pupils’ reading comprehension through Multimedia Reading activity. This innovation was conducted in the grade 3 of Mahayag Elementary School in the school year 2015-2016. The class consisted of 41 pupils and these participants were purposively chosen as respondents. The data were collected by using instruments like giving tests. The researcher used descriptive quantitative technique to

analyze the result of pre-test and post-test.

This innovation came up with the result after implementing and using Multimedia Reading activity in the teaching and learning process, the findings showed that the teaching and learning activity using Multimedia Reading activity has successfully improved the pupils’ reading comprehension. The level of reading comprehension of the Grade 3 pupils prior to the multimedia activity

are in the frustration level with the total number of 30 pupils (66.66%).

While the level of reading comprehension of the Grade 3 pupils after the multimedia reading activity are in the independent level with the total number of 34pupils (75.56%). This implies that the multimedia reading activity enhances the reading comprehension of the grade 3 pupils. This kind of innovation answers the need of the learners of the 21st century to sustain their needs as learners of the new generation.
