THE government has urged caution against aftershocks that could occur after a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck off Mati in Davao Oriental early Saturday.

“Aftershocks are expected given the earthquake’s magnitude,” said Hermes Daquipa, science research specialist of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

According to Leo T. Alicias, OCD-ARMM officer in charge, it is important for disaster workers to have advanced knowledge and warning of an earthquake “so it’s a must take on serious security measures ahead of time and be able to learn how to properly respond.”

“We are going to conduct the ceremonial earthquake drill at Upi town in Maguindanao to be held at the municipal gymnasium around 9 a.m.,” Alicias said.

Alicias also encouraged the participation of representatives from various line agencies and individuals during the conduct of the drill.

“We invite everyone to execute and internalize the Duck, Cover, and Hold (DCH) for them to constantly recall how to react in the event of an earthquake,” said Alicias.

Engr. Amier Ashan Aplal, Operations Officer of OCD-ARMM, said first responders must know and understand the procedures “so we can save more lives.”

“When you are situated indoor, when a large earthquake occurs, you should avoid moving objects, objects that may fall and even broken glass. If you are outside, find an open space and avoid buildings and trees.

Fact-finding mission vs killings of lumads in Bukidnon snowballs

CAGAYAN de Oro City-For the killing of a pregnant lumad woman last July 30 which has yet to be resolved and the evacuation of dozens of families resulting from the shooting, a group will be conducting an investigation into the case in Barangay Kawayan, San Fernando, Bukidnon on September 27-29.

The casualty was identified as Makinit Gayuran, said to be three months pregnant when she was killed due to the strafing allegedly on orders of Aldie “Butsoy” Salusad, said to be the leader of the New Indigenous People’s Army for Reform (NIPAR).

Kalumbay tribal group l e a d e r D atu Jomor ito Goaynon said in an interview Saturday it’s been over a month since the displaced residents have camped out at the Bukidnon provincial capitol grounds in Malaybalay City as their prospects of going back home is still uncertain.

In a dialogue with the evacuees, Bukidnon Gov. Jose Maria Zubiri Jr. has

promised them Salusad will be apprehended for what he did, but Goaynon said both the provincial and municipal police offices have not yet acted on the governor’s order.

Goaynon said Gayuran’s family has already filed a complaint for murder against Salusad at the provincial prosecutor’s office in Malaybalay.

According to lawyer Czarina Gold Musni of Higala Lumad Network, the mission will be participated in by various cause-oriented organizations to find out what really happened in the area.

Dubbed as the Interfaith Solidarity Mission in Defense of Indigenous communities Fighting Impunity initiated by Kalumbay and human rights group Karapatan, participants in the fact-finding include representatives from Philippine Task Force for Indigenous Peoples’ Rights, International Indigenous Peoples’ Movement for Self-Determination and Liberation, and officials from the National Council of Churches in the Philippines.

When I recopied this part from my bible I got the idea to write about this topic. The writer of these proverbs expressed very well the effect of alcohol.

Alcohol is, as we all know, a depressant. It slows down the function of all the body parts. Vital functions can be slowed down to the point of death. Under its influence, people choke to death at family picnics, drown at the beach, fall asleep while driving a car, hurt and even kill other people.

Walk the talk, interfaith dialogue

MARAWI City––Davao was full of visitors attending various government events such as Sulong Pilipinas where mayors from all over Mindanao and Visayas attended . I was on the other side of the SMX attending the Mindanao Interreligious Dialogue (IRD) Solidarity Conference at Mandaya Hotel organized by Catholic Relief Services in time for September Peace Month.

Back in Marawi, I still worry about the impact of the jailbreak of so-called ISIS youth. What is society doing so that their grievances are addressed? They are few but their disgruntlement cascades in violence that affects the innocent.

Host Jannah of Cagayan de Oro voiced firmly the aspirations of the youth to be heard. In our social media society which values celebrity as role models, indeed we need alternative role models in faith leaders.

The successor generation too must be given their platform to be heard in faith discussions.

The message in the IRD conference confirmed the time-tested call to protect life at all costs. Archbishop Fernando Capalla chronicled the long history of interreligious dialogue in the Philippines, in Zamboanga, etc.

There was a strong discussion in my gender and IRD panel on the niqab wear because it was a heated issue in Davao where the concerned facially covered women are supposedly asked

to show their faces. In my sharing on Gender IRD perspectives, I replied that faith is definitely a personal decision, we must learn to socialize than withdraw if we embrace our faith deeper.

This is one observation and concern of Zamboanga professor Alih Yacub. More engagements and platforms for Islam and democracy research must be presented by the religious leaders.

Group on World Bank offer to ‘assist’ in tax reform program

BAYAN Muna Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate yesterday warned that the World Bank’s recent offer “to assist” the Finance Department on the Duterte administration’s tax reform plan “may just be yet another attempt to interfere with our country’s affairs and make our tax system more regressive and anti-poor.”

“As it is now, the revenue generation proposals being floated by the DOF, in lieu of the proposed adjusted income tax base, like the additional oil excise tax and the further expanded VAT-base, are already anti-poor and would be an added burden to consumers,” said the Davao City-based progressive

solon in a press statement.

“The DOF said that it wants to impose a tax of Php6 per litre on diesel, among others, which is commonly used by public utility vehicles and by trucks transporting goods, as well as on LPG and kerosene which are directly consumed by poor households.

It may also raise existing excise taxes to up to Php10 per litre or kilogram,” Zarate said.

“For decades, the country’s economic policies are already under the baton and influence of multilatetal agencies like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Yet, instead of alleviating the situa-

tion of our people, particularly the majority poor, they become the beneficiaries of the harsh economic prescriptions of these agencies,” the lawmaker noted.

He also raised concerns that Finance Undersecretary Karl Kenneth Chua, the World Bank’s former senior country economist, “might be bringing along with him to the DOF his conflicted positions.”

“Change must also come to the DOF. We must be very careful. We must ensure that our push to have lower income taxes would not be offset by more expanded taxes in the long run that would just wipe out the gains of lower income tax

to consumers,” he added.

“We agree with the research group IBON that along with the IMF, the World Bank is the primary agency responsible for designing the regressive tax system, including providing incentives for liberalization. This has primarily benefited the interests of the wealthiest and big corporations at the expense of poor Filipinos,” he added.

IBON said among the conditions of World Bank structural adjustment loans and IMF stabilization programs since the late-1980s was the imposition of the value-added tax (VAT) and lowering of income taxes includ-

ing on the rich.

For instance, former President Cory Aquino, under the advisement of the IMF-World Bank, swiftly passed Executive Order (EO) 273 which applied a 10% VAT on basic commodities. The VAT was later expanded under succeeding presidents Ramos and Arroyo also with pressure from the IMF-World Bank.

“Along with IBON, we believe that the World Bank’s latest offer to the DOF is part of its long-standing advocacy of taxing the poor while unburdening the country’s wealthiest oligarchs, as well as the large foreign and local firms,” he said.

“If we want to industrialize our country because we were left behind by so many generations, you have to keep up with developments and... right now is to use coal, cheap, it’s available although it is maybe deletorius to the whole of the climate of planet Earth,” said Duterte.

President Duterte further explained that there is a challenge to stabilize electricy requirement and that in due time available renewable energy sources such as solar can be utilized with better technology and quick return of investment.

But we never thought that Mindanao would develop so fast that in a few years, we would be starting again to

The pupils and the social media

The social media has indeed greatly impacted and affected our lives today, greatly including the lives and behavior of our young ones, our school children, our pupils. In this digital age, mostly everyone of us have cellular phones, Twitter, Facebook, and are knowledgeable enough to handle and manage differing and various social media sites in the world wide web.

Yes, it has advantages and disadvantages.

Further, these social networking sites may contain images and pages that would not be suitable to the young ones. However, once you used it, one does not have the control to screen what should come out and what should not. Although there are some settings in the Facebook that can, still you have no control to what pictures, ideas and videos that would be shared by your friends that would popped out in the newsfeed. Thus, at home, parents should always be vigilant.

On the other hand, at school, we can always integrate the use of the internet and the social media to our pupils. We can give them sites and pages that they can study over and visit and learn something from it.

That is why, teachers must do the research first, check the page or what before suggest it to the pupils. We must be the one who will screen it first. As we cannot control what these pupils would do while using the internet, it is of great deed that should remind them of the pros and cons when doing such. We should always lead to social networking sites that would best fit their taste. Also sites that would uplift their moral and good values is best plus they can read and learn short stories and then probably encourage them to apply and follow it.

Exactly, we do not have the control over our pupils but we can always remind them to be always good and be responsible when using the internet, the most encourage them to think before they click sites and pages. As teachers, we should always remind them to use this new technology for their own development and betterment.

As these new discoveries have positive effects, we should not forget that they will surely have negative impacts as well and that it depends on them on how they will use it. The best, we should always guide our pupils and bring them to their desired path.

Ensuring trust and confidence from pupils

Having the class's trust and confidence is one of the utmost paramount teachers should have. It can be the parameter that as a teacher we are trusted not only by the pupils but the parents and the community as well. Trust and confidence are big words everyone should have from anyone; whether from our partners, employers, family, relatives, and even friends. Through this, we can assure that we can be respected and trusted by everyone, of course, to all aspects it may include.

As a teacher, there can be many issues that can be attached to our core functions and positions, yes, it is not an easy job, it is never an easy job. That is why it is very important that we can ensure the trust and confidence from our pupils. Their trust and confidence that we can deliver things as expected. Their trust and confidence that we can set as a good example to them and better lead and bring them to their academic success and successes in their life's endeavours. As a teacher, here are some ways on how we can ensure trust and confidence from our pupils.

One, respect your pupils.

As teachers, let us always bear in mind that as much as we want to gain respect from our pupils, they too need our utmost respect.

Respect them in a way that they will feel that we lovr and care for them. Respect them in a way that they will find their strengths and not their weaknesses. Respect them and learn from them.

Two, set as a good example not only in the school but also in the community you live in.

Yes, teachers are expected to be of high moral standards.

We should always protect and stand for our name because the moment our names are tarnished with malicious acts and issues, it will affect our relationship with everyone, the most, with our pupils. Let us live by example that our pupils would follow. If we can live of high moral standards, we can also gain the trust and confidence of the parents and the community.

And third, communicate with your pupils.

Communicating with our pupils is but a normal act as a teacher but it will surely have a big impact to the pupils. Once they will know that we are always here to listen, console and able to communicate with them, they will see us as their confidante and that they will easily share their thoughts and ideas, even their feelings to us.

Yes, we definitely stand as their second mothers and fathers in the school, that is why their expectation of parents, of us should be meet or even surpass it. Let us not disappoint our pupils. Let us not disappoint our beloved parents and the community.

As teachers, number one challenge is to ensure trust and confidence from our pupils. I encourage everyone to do our job committedly and compassionately so that we would be able to produce skilled and competitive pupils ready to compete with other individuals in the outside world. I pray.

Instructional Processes, Psychological Attributes and School Environment of Students in Araling Panlipunan

The school administration of Lanao del Sur I Division could also make use fo the outcome of this study. Hence, curriculum evaluation and resource development could be established to improve and support the teaching-learning contexts in ARaling Panlipunan, especially in providing guidelines to effectively express and administer the learning modules of the subject.

The study utilized two research designs, the descriptive-correlational and causal-comparative research methods.

THIS study generally sought to determine the performance of students in Araling Panlipunan among 488 Grade 7 learners in Lanao del Sur I Division. Specifically, it aimed to determine the level of students’ performance in Araling Panlipunan, assess the level of instructional processes in the teaching and learning of Araling Panlipunan, identify the level of school environment of students in Araling Panlipunan, correlate the students’ academic performance to instructional processes, psychological factors and school environment, identify the variable that best predicts students’ performance and develop a causal model of students’ performance in Araling Panlipunan.

Based on the f indings of the study, it was discovered that Grade 7 students are positively motivated to learn and have a moderately positive attitude towards Araling Panlipunan. Learners also had a positive outlook in their school environment specifically on the facilities and equipment available, classroom climate conditions, learners’ interaction, cultural relations and administrative support. Moreover, learners’ performance is correlated to instructional processes, particularly curriculum. Yet cultural relations is the best fitting model on learners’ performance.

Because of that, it is highly recommended that parents are urged to help promote the morale and expectations of their children order to encourage them in their academic

studies and help them become well-adjusted to their school environment by providing meaningful actions at home.

Meanwhile, teachers are encouraged to provide alternative choices in their instructional designs and teaching styles. Teachers are also encouraged to create varied learning activities that will engage and motivate their students.

In addition, quality instructional materials may be developed for use in the teachinglearning of Araling Panlipunan. Also, it is noted that cultural relations may be considered in reviewing the curriculum framework in order to make appropriate and acceptable instructional resolutions that will promote students’ learning.

Since their separation, they had never been communicating or supporting either financially or emotionally to each other,neither minding each other affair’s; Petitioner’s seek judicial decree of divorce, thereby, severing their marriage bond on April 8, 1999, so that they will have free hand to do what a single man or woman could do without marital burdens.

Reconciliation between them had already been diligently employed but all proved futile.

WHEREFORE, finding this petition to be sufficient in form and substance, set the initial hearing of this case on October 21, 2016 at 9:00 a.m at which time, date and place. Any interested party may appear and show why the petition should not be granted. Judge, aid survive ambush attempt

BUTUAN City––A regional trial court judge handling a significant number of drug cases and his driver bodyguard survived an ambush attempt early Friday, after a group of men with highpowered firearms blocked their way and fired at their vehicle.

Felix said during a press briefing held at his office on Friday afternoon that Judge Hector Salise, Regional Trial Court Branch 7 presiding judge based in Bayugan City, Agusan del Sur province, was on his way to his office on board a red Innova car (SKF 719) manned by his driver-escort Police Officer 3 Edmund Narvasa. They were blocked by the armed men who were on board a gray Sports Utility Vehicle when they reached the diversion road at Purok 3, Barangay Lemon in this city.

The armed men who had taken positions at the ambush site, suddenly fired at their vehicle, hitting Salise and his driver. Narvasa, though wounded, was able to maneuver their vehicle back and sped away until they reached a community police assistance center (COMPAC) in Barangay

A police force at the COMPAC responded to the crime scene while members of the Butuan City Public Safety Company rushed Salisi and his driver to the MJ Santos Hospital here.

Salisi sustained four gunshot wounds in various parts of his body while his driver has three. The two were declared in stable condition after undergoing an operation.

Felix condemned the act and announced a thorough investigation to identify and arrest the suspects.

He also said that adjacent municipalities had been ordered to put up checkpoints and prepare for hot pursuit operations.

Felix said they still have to establish the motive of the suspects.
