THE 2nd Print Shop Expo 2016, where you source printing technologies and solutions, opened yesterday at Limketkai Atrium for the second straight year in a row.

The three-day event, which will last until Saturday, also features a business seminar on how to start a print shop business every 1:30 to 4:30 in the afternoon for the three days at the venue. Topics to be discussed in the three-hour seminar are large format printing on various media, direct-to-garment printing (t-shirts), merchandise printing i.e. mugs, cups, pens, etc., offset printing for brochures, flyers, posters, etc., graphic design and multimedia (photography, video, graphics, LED, videowall, etc).

This year, there are 30 exhibitors in the event coming from the following sectors: graphic design, pre-press, print on demand, t-shirt printing, ad and sign making, large format publishing, printing on merchandise/

FAO, BFAR address biodiversity loss in Samar Sea MANILA – The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has warned that by 2050, catches of main fish species could decline by up to 40 percent in the tropics, where livelihoods, food and nutrition security strongly depend on the fisheries

sector.

In the Samar Sea however, the situation is much more urgent. In the last 30 years, fish catch has dropped from 8kg per day to less than 3.5kg, according to the Samar Sea Fisheries Management Plan of 2016.

Various studies con-

ducted by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), FAO and the Samar State University further underscore the considerable loss of biodiversity in this once prime fishing site. An earlier survey found that of the 50 commercially important fish species that

existed in the Samar Sea in the 1980s, only 10 remained a decade later.

119 years after last killer quake, people still lack preparedness’

ZAMBOANGA CITY – About 119 years ago today, the peninsula was devastated by a 7.5 magnitude earth-

quake when the Sulu trench surrounding the area dramatically shifted. Today, an earthquake expert laments the lack of preparedness in the region, especially among

the barangays.

Engr. Allan Labayog of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said that people in this age have not

yet experienced the worst, like in September 21, 1897, when structures literally crumbled, and hundreds of people were killed in the aftermath.

“We have not yet experienced it, that is why we seem to not be serious about preparing for the worst,” he told members of the Regional Disaster Risk

Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) yesterday (September 20).

Many of us believe that in order for a person to achieve his success, he must have a good background in education and an attitude of a survivor.

A great education begins with the desire to learn.

Education is important in everybody. It gives us knowledge about the world around us, strengthens our perspective in life and helps build opinions and have points of view in everything about life.

K to 12 gives students time to master basic academic skills. To prove that K-12 system is more than just adding two more years to high school, there are also these practical benefits of schooling. First, preparedness for tertiary

learning. Second, readiness to join the workforce.

Third, skill competency in the global job market. Also, a sufficient instructional time. With k to 12 education, students will have sufficient instructional time for subject-related tasks, making them more prepared in every subject area. With the old system, Filipino students were consistently behind on achievement scores. Also, more skilled and competent labour force. Another reason to support K to 12 is because the graduates of this program will be more prepared to enter labour force. K to 12 education will help Filipinos gain a competitive edge.

Importance of good values among pupils

Establishment of good values among our pupils of this new generation is of much importance as with the advent of new technology and the digital media nowadays, it is a fact and it cannot be denied that their values has been influenced and has been affected. Thus, in a classroom setting, it is but a challenge that teachers, in any level, should restore and better preserve these values.

One should understand that why pupils are being sent to school is the idea that they would be educated and inculcated with values necessary for them to achieve better quality education and have a good future ahead of them. And that these includes the following im-

portance and significance.

Preparing them for their role in the society in the future. Knowledge gained at school is the primary result of best quality education but in any way or the other schools should be enabling pupils not only to gain knowledge but also good moral values. They will need it both in preparing themselves to be good parents in the future and good citizens in the country.

Countering bad influences in the society. As mentioned above, with the advent of new technology and the social media nowadays, wherein children can grasp ideas and thoughts that would implicate a negative effect on them, it is due that at school, we should instill in their minds and hearts only good values,

this for their own benefit as well.

Moral values will stick with us throughout life.

Yes, it is true that what our values that would definitely define who we are, what we are and who we will become in the future. Thus, whatever values we have right now, it best describes us and the community we belong and we live in.

Hence, as teachers, we should live up to adhering only to good values so that we can teach and impart it with our pupils. Let us nurture them and give them only the best but let us always remember that aside from providing them the best quality education, it is our responsibility and duty also that we teach them good values and better live it by example and life.

To address this crisis, the Philippines, through BFAR, is participating in a regional FAO programme for sustainable fisheries.

The multi-country initiative implemented by the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Centre in the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, and Viet Nam applies the principles of Essential Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM). It involves a decision-making process that equally considers the economic needs of coastal communities and the necessity of conserving marine resources.

Trawl fisheries bycatch management The degradation of the Samar Sea is linked to the increase in commercial fishing, overfishing and destructive fishing methods but its impact is disproportionately felt by families who depend on the ocean for their food and livelihoods.

“Driven by the basic need to eat and earn a living, many fishers in the area practice ‘trawling’ or literally scraping the bottom of the sea to catch bottomdwelling fish and shellfish.

This damages the coral reef and seabed, and contributes to the massive increase of bycatch,” Fernández added.

In trawl fishing, a staggering amount of marine life such as turtles, finfish, juveniles, among others, is also incidentally hauled with the catch. While some of this bycatch, specifically the lowvalue and “trash” fish, helps supplement the incomes of subsistence fishers and address household food insecurity, its prolonged negative impact on marine biodiversity could lead to the eventual closure of the area’s remaining productive fishing grounds.

With technical and operational support from FAO, BFAR is working in collaboration with the Samar Sea Alliance of Local Government Units, local fisheries managers, planners and development officers to formulate equitable policies and locally-responsive guidelines for the sustainable management of fisheries in the Samar Sea, including reducing bycatch from trawl fishing. FAO and BFAR are also cataloguing fishing gear and conducting critical habitat mapping and

zoning of fishing grounds.

In addition to exploring the potential benefits of establishing a closed season, the two agencies are also assessing livelihood requirements and building the capacity of stakeholders to sustain rehabilitation activities with an EAFM perspective.

“The frontliners are always the barangay officials,” he added, “hence the importance for them to learn what needs to be done to be prepared and save lives.”

The risk of high magnitude earthquakes is high in the region, Labayog emphasized. In fact, since January, a total of 5 earthquakes, the strongest being in April, were recorded by PHIVOLCS. “April’s earthquake could have triggered a tsunami had it recorded .5 more magnitude,” Labayog explained.

Incidentally, that quake had a magnitude of 6, strong enough to cause considerable structural damage.

Another half magnitude and a tsunami would have occurred last April. “We were lucky,” he noted.

Labayog emphasized to RDRRMC members the importance of intensified information dissemination and advocacy campaigns especially in coastal barangays, as they are most vulnerable should a tsunami surface.

“The possibility is always there. But the question is: are we prepared as individuals, as parents, as civil servants?”
