The training provided her with practical knowledge of the telecommunications industry, which complemented the theories she had learned in school.

“Because of that training, my industry knowledge widened and I became confident when I was applying

for a job,” she said.

Caritan was eventually hired by Smart. There she joined dozens of Smart engineers sharing their knowledge and experiences with engineering and information technology students, under the Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program (SWEEP).

Because of this program, Smart was recently cited by international business magazine Fortune as one of 50 companies that have “changed the world.” The

annual rankings aim to showcase the power of companies to improve the human condition by making an important social or environmental impact through their business strategy and operations.

The focus of student learning in this classroom is different. The focus is no longer on learning by memorizing and recalling information but on learning how to learn. Students learn how to ask the right questions, how to conduct an appropriate investigation, how to find answers, and how to use information. The emphasis in this classroom

is on creating lifelong learners. With this goal in mind, students move beyond the student role to learn through real world experiences.

The new role of the teacher in the 21st Century classroom requires changes in teachers’ knowledge and classroom behaviors. The teacher must know how to act as a classroom facilitator.

Education is about changing or improving a person’s paradigm where he could realize that he could be someone he dreams he would be.

Education is an utmost

priority to any government. For educating people is about teaching them to be productive in their own life, and contribute to nation-building. That is why education in the country is leaking even to the farthest, remote areas and bridging even in the hard to reach municipalities.

As most people know, DepEd implemented programs to programs just to make this vision a real-

ity. There is Alternative Learning System to cater out of school youth and adult. This scheme is student-friendly for it prefers to where a person is most comfortable to, especially when it comes to schedule and venue.

This is just one of hundred programs that pushes access on Education for All. In this, Education should be given a top priority and any problems that hindering such must be addressed. A lot of solutions have been implemented. Therefore, no problem is impossible to solve.

DOE, electrical engineers join forces to audit country’s power system Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi

(Taguig City). The Department of Energy (DOE) signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) recently with the Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the Philippines (IIEE) . The parties agreed to organize Task Forces consisting of DOE personnel and IIEE members that will conduct the technical audit of the generation, transmission and distribution facilities in the country.

Energy Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi said: “It is imperative for us to immediately determine the causes, whether technical or contractual, of the current power supply situation.

We have to find a lasting solution to this recurring problem as well as establishing and institutionalizing far-reaching formulae, because it is our people who are bearing the brunt of power interruptions and we cannot allow that to continue.”

On a pro-bono basis, the DOE tapped IIEE for being the only Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC)-accredited professional association in the field of electrical engineering with the necessary technical knowledge, expertise and competence to assist the DOE in addressing the current power situation. The IIEE has 47,000 licensed and competent electrical engineers and master electricians across the country.

Pursuant to the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA), the DOE and IIEE agreed to look

into current mechanisms aimed at ensuring the safety, efficiency, quality, reliability and security of the power system.

The audit is also envisioned to disentangle and unbundle the flaws in the generation-transmissiondistribution chain that cause

deficiencies in our power supply.

The agreement was brought to the table because of the recent spate of power supply reserve deficiencies due to forced outages of major plants in Luzon.

These deficiencies resulted to rotational brownouts in Metro

Manila and nearby provinces in the past few days.

The DOE assures the public that it continues to monitor the developments in the power industry and to exhaust all possible measures to resolve the power supply situation in the country.
