VILLANUEVA, Misamis Oriental -- The Andrew Gotianun Foundation, Inc. (AGFI) has inked a Memorandum of Understanding with a pledge of P500 million to the Educational Research and Development Assistance (ERDA) Foundation and Xavier University to put up a Technical-Vocational High School for scholars at the PHIVIDEC Industrial Estate in Villanueva town, Misamis Oriental.

The school, which will be called “Andrew L. Gotianun, Sr. Center for Integrated Technologies, Xavier University,” is envisioned to produce graduates who are world-ready, with international standard competen-

cies, and spiritual and social commitment.

AGFI shall finance the construction of the school buildings, workshops, and dormitories, as well as the provision of furniture and other equipment, IT, Tech-Voc machinery and transport vehicles. The Foundation also commits to partly finance the annual operating costs of the senior high school for the first five years of operations so all its students can attend as full, live-in scholars.

Do I have a boss or a leader school head? This is the question mostly asked by the teachers silently.

There are some teachers murmured on their school heads treatment that he/ she is like a boss and not a leader. When can we say that a school head is a boss or a leader? Lets find out.

The boss is authoritative.

He wants that all he likes will be followed whether the goal to be achieved is good or not so good. A

leader is democratic. He gets the goodwill of his men. He seeks advice and suggestions.

“I” is the password of a boss. He wants people to appreciate and praise him and for all good works he says, “I”, But a good leader says, “we”. The boss gives the go signal for the fight.

He lets his people move on forward in the struggle for education. He just mandates- gives the rules and regulations to be followed.

But a leader coaches them.

The boys says, “ Get here on time”, the good leader comes ahead of time.

Punctuality is not only for the followers but for the leader also.

In every offices, there are breakdowns especially if it is a large group. There are bidas and kontrabidas.

The boss finds blame for the breakdowns but a good leader fixes the breakdowns.

The boss makes work a tragedy, sometimes there are instances when tears roll down on their cheeks and make fist to box of in

an endeavour being done.

But a good leader makes work a game and there are winners and losers, thus teaching them to be sports inculcating in their minds that defeat is a postponed victory.

A good leader pats the shoulders of winners and congratulates them, with open arms hugs the losers and will say, “do it your best next time, chances is all around.”

What you should know about the K to 12 senior high school

For parents seeking the best educational opportunities for their children, here’s an overview of the program which caps the country’s most massive education reform to-date.

Senior high school (SHS) refers to Grades 11 and 12, the last two years of the K-12 program that DepEd implemented since 2012. Students study in SHS the subjects that will brings them to their

preferred career path.

High school in the old system consisted First Year to Fourth Year. What corresponds to those four years today are Grades 7 to 10, also known as junior high school (JHS).

Take note now: “Senior high” has two grade levels and no longer means just the very last year of high school; “junior high” has four grade levels and does not mean just the second to

the last year of high school.

Under Republic Act No. 10533 (Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013), you will have to complete Kindergarten, Grades 1 to 6 (elementary), Grades 7 to 10 (junior high school) and Grades 11 to 12 (senior high school)—in all 13 years— before you can receive a high school diploma.

Students cannot b e forced to spend two more years in school, but if they stop at Grade 10, they will only receive a JHS certifi-

cate, not a high school diploma.

Students who belong to the K-12 generation but do not complete Grade 12 will be disadvantaged in that they will not be accepted into a college degree or technical-vocational certificate program without SHS diploma. They will also miss out on an opportunity to learn skills that can qualify them for employment right after SHS, or prepare them for starting up a business.

Philippines’ International Investment Position as of end-June 2016 Registers Higher Net Liability Position The country’s preliminary net external liability position1 as of end-June 2016 increased slightly (by 5.6 percent) to US$33.4 billion from US$31.6 billion as of end-March 2016. Total external financial liabilities increased by US$6.2 billion (or by 3.2 percent), exceeding the US$4.4 billion buildup (or by 2.8 percent) in total external financial assets.

As of end-June 2016, total external financial liabilities amounted to US$196.1 billion, while total external financial assets stood at US$162.8 billion.

The growth in external financial liabilities during the quarter was buoyed by increases in net inflows of Foreign Direct invest-

ments (FDI), both intercompany borrowing by resident affiliates (by 10,6 percent) and equity capita! (by 2.1 percent), on the back of the country’s sustained positive economic performance and growth prospects. Meanwhile, the 4.0 percent increase in Foreign Portfolio Investments (FPI) was due mainly to the positive price revaluations of non-resident’s holdings of domestic equity securities as the Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) appreciated by 7.4 percent during the quarter.

Total external financial assets during the quarter increased by 2.8 percent driven mainly by the buildup of the country’s reserve

assets. Increases in residents’ lending to non-residents’ affiliates and residents’ investments in debt securities issued by non-residents also contributed to the growth of the country’s total external financial assets.

Across sectors, only the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) maintained a net external asset position as of end-June 2016. The other major sectors - Deposittaking Corporations except the Central Bank (Banks), the General Government, and Other Sectors - remain net users of foreign resources, Compared to the previous quarter, only the BSP registered a net asset position, while those of Banks, General Govern-

ment, and Other Sectors posted net external liability positions.

The BSP continued to account for the largest share of the Philippines’ total externa! financial claims on the rest of the world at 52.8 percent. The BSP’s external financial assets totaled US$86.0 billion, 2.7 percent higher than US$83.7 billion recorded as of end-March 2016. The BSP’s gross international reserves also grew by 2.8 percent to reach US$85.3 billion as of end-June 2016.

This was due mainly to upward valuation adjustments of the value of BSP’s holdings of monetary gold as well as investments in debt securities.

Listening: A Bridge Towards Better Communication in Managing a School

These are words commonly use by someone who is speaking in front in which it means simply to listen.

According to the dictionary listening means to perceive by ear usually with careful or responsive attention. It involves everything we hear, we respond, we communicate comes

from listening. There is no correct response if listening is absent.

In connection, departments of all offices, establishments, entrepreneurs and common people use listening to communicate well. In school, managing a school, listening is of great use. When your school manager genuinely listens to a teachers problem, he demonstrates, in a most

convincing way his respect and love for him. That favor is returned and he gains that teachers respect and love and most important, is trust.

For a clear communication between school manager and teacher, listening is essential for human relationship to grow. Through listening teachers develop his/her potential talent, and skill in making the teacherlearning process effective more so on his judgement and decision making.

When one fails to listen, what he hopes to achieve becomes a failure. Sometimes, a school manager has trouble controlling his anger when standard rules and regulations do not get through to the teacher, but that anger would have prevented had he listened to what the teacher was saying.

Good listening habits resulted to good communication. Good communication resulted to have a harmonious teamwork.

Facing The Challenges of the K- 2 Curriculum

The implementation of the K-12 plan in the Philippine Basic Education Curriculum is the key to our nation’s development.

Though the government faces many problems as it implements the program over the course of several years, it is a necessary improvement since increasing the quality of our education is critical to our nation’s success.

It’s been nearly three years since the government began implementing its K-12 educational reform program – but the policy continues to have its share

of detractors.

Last March, a coalition of teachers and staff of higher educational institutions around the Philippines petitioned the Supreme Court to suspend the K-12 law.

The program adds two years of senior high school to the country’s basic education system which allow senior high school students to specialize in one of three tracks: academic, technicalvocational- livelihood, and sports and arts.

Before K-12, the government said that the Philippines was the last country in Asia and one of only three

countries worldwide with a 10-year pre-university cycle.

There are several challenges that K-12 Curriculum implementation are facing namely, lack of materials, facilities, books, infrastructure and human resource.

Required infrastructure as one of the major challenges in implementing the K-12 program reflects the seemingly impossibility of its actualization. As per the data reported by DepEd (2010a), 153, 569 classrooms, 13.2 million armchairs, 95.6 million books would be needed to fully implement the program. At present, classroom shortage is a seri-

The philosophy states that education shall develop citizen who believe in God, love their country and fellowmen and actively participate in building a just Filipino society and conserving and developing the nation’s human and material resources.

There are three important points to ponder in the aforementioned philosophy of education.

First, education shall develop citizens who believe in God. As a teacher, I think this is the most important philosophy.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

Every year, millions of pupils and students finished elementary, secondary and tertiary level of education.

The acquisition of knowledge in school should be geared toward producing not just only competent and skilled graduated but a God- fearing individual.

The quality of education is measured not on the quantity of students and pupils we produce nor on the high achievement result but on who they are as a person. These graduates should be able to handle real life situations, lawabiders and instilled in them the values of respect, honesty, and integrity.

Second, education shall

develop citizens who love their country and fellowmen. The activities and programs in school are anchored toward producing graduates who are able to manifest patriotism and nationalism and capable of showing unconditional love to their neighbors.

The school serves as the avenue to teach learners how to become selfless, to willfully sacrifice to the extent of losing one’s life in the service of countrymen and fellowmen. One who is able to defend our nation against foreign invaders and oppressions.

Furthermore, these learners are taught to hate violence and become the ambassador of peace, love, and unity in the country.

Third, education shall de velop cit izens w ho actively participate in

building a just Filipino society and conserving and developing the nation’s human and material resources. There are lots of programs in school which engage and require the students to take active participation, giving equal opportunities to all types of learners. Sports and other academic activities teach them to become impartial and bias free individual at the same time extract and showcase their skills and potentials which are their human resources. Our country is rich in natural resources.

Therefore, the students are expected to bear passion in preserving, conserving and protecting these abundant natural resources that we have, otherwise all of these will become in vain.

Despite these challenges, however, the Department of Education together with all the stakeholder of the learning community will hold hands in implementing the K-12 program.

Under the banner of the true education reform, these challenges, like that of the aforementioned criticisms, will be overcome.

My teacher, my hero

As we celebrate the National Teachers’ Month, it is worthy to note that our teachers should be given due recognition and appreciation for everything they have done in moulding and shaping our school children, our pupils to be better individuals who will be the anchor for this country’s nation-building. Teachers are indeed considered as today’s living heroes, today’s living monument of what great integrity and great excellence is all about.

Indeed, teachers are hero. I am teacher but I am moulded and shaped by a teacher. I was taught and I was acknowledged by a teacher and definitely I would not be where I am now if not because of the teachers who have devoted their selfless love and life for the attainment and achievement of our goals.

I, personally, have seen and have experienced the worth of a teacher.

Teaching is not as easy as one, two, and three and not as easy as the English

alphabet. Here you have to vow your commitment and patience to fully commit yourself in better serving them with all thy heart and all thy mind. That is why, I personally considered my teachers, my fellow teachers as my hero; for they have saved me and have lived for me, for us.

My teacher, my hero should not only be commemorated during only this month but to every single day. Teaching is one most respected jobs in the world and as teachers we should always stand in high standards for our pupils to see us as living models that they will follow in the future. This includes non-cognitive skills such as self-discipline and collaboration, as well as academic knowledge and critical thinking. Deeper learning develops students’ creativity and innovation, and information and technology literacy to thrive in a digital world.

Some studies found that students enrolled in deeper learning programs improved their problemsolving skills, were more likely to graduate on time, and advanced more quickly in interpersonal skills than students in other programs.

Deeper learning is also crucial for the health of our society and economy.

Employers want employees who are able to communicate effectively and work in teams. Even more important is the fact that students will face extremely complex problems as they enter the workforce, such as

rapid climate change and poverty. They will need to work collaboratively and apply knowledge in new ways to develop innovative solutions.

Students use technology- the internet, mobile phones, etc. to develop deeper learning skills such as collaboration and communication as they connect with people across the globe. The most difficult part of implementing deeper learning, however.

According to experts, are “moving teachers from the traditional setting to expanding their classrooms beyond what they are comfortable with. It takes time, strategy, rethinking professional development.”

For some of our teachers, the strategies may be a very new way of thinking about learners and the classroom environment,” which requires them to take risks in their teaching.

THE National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) handed out a total of two digital projectors, 30 computer tablets and 247 coloring books to two elementary schools in Cagayan de Oro City and Misamis Oriental.

According to Telesfora Madelo of Department of Health (DOH) region 10, out of the 10 establishments monitored on 8 August 2016 in Cagayan de Oro City, only four had a lactation facility namely Concentrix, SM, Ororama, and Centrio Ayala Mall.

Among the recommendation include another visit to these establishments who have not complied and a written report directly to its manager or Human Resource officer. It was also discussed that this monitoring must be in coordination with its counterpart local government unit for the sanctions.

The companies must also encourage mothers to breastfeed exclusively for six months and to continue breastfeeding for two years or beyond along with the introduction of appropriate and adequate complementary foods after six months.

Further, establishments must prohibit activities promoting use of breastmilk substitutes, teats and pacifiers within the lactation station; prohibit posting of marketing or sales materials on infant formula and/ or breastmilk substitutes within the lactation station and post guidelines on the use of the station.

On the other hand, com-

panies may seek exemption of lactation station as provided under Annex A of Department Order 143 s. 2015, of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on the “Guidelines Governing Exemption of Establishments from Setting Up Workplace Lactation Stations.”

Northern Mindanao agri production declines in Q2 due to El Niño

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- The dry spell brought about by the recently ended El Niño phenomenon caused the agricultural production in Northern Mindanao to decline in the second quarter of the year, the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) reported.

For palay production alone, output fell by 19.7 percent to only 99,644 metric tons (MT) from 124,068 MT in the same quarter in 2015. Decreases in production were noted in four out of the five provinces in the region due to inadequate irrigation water and rainfall.

Corn production, which is highly dependent on rainfall, also declined by 50 percent from 42,746 MT to only 21,220 MT. Except for Misamis Occidental, the rest of the provinces posted reductions in outputs for both white and yellow corn varieties. The decrease in output in Bukidnon and Lanao del Norte was due to lesser area planted and lesser usage of fertilizer while insufficient rainfall in some parts of Misamis Oriental as

well as shifting of corn areas into pineapple and cassava further contributed to the decline production in the province.

Clarete said lesser production could also be attributed to more white corn from other areas of Mindanao which came into the region.

Similar trend was also posted in coconut production as both outputs for matured coconut and green nut slid by six percent and nine percent, respectively.

Production of major crops recorded a negative growth of 17 percent. All crops subsector, except fruit crops, reported declines during the second quarter of the year. The reduction was

mostly noticed in industrial crops which posted an average decrease of 58 percent.

Production of sugarcane which accounts for about 91 percent of the total industrial crops went down by 60 percent.

Vegetables production was likewise down by nine percent while rootcrops fell by about five percent.

The modest growths in banana and pineapple production at 1.27 percent and 3.97 percent, respectively, also failed to offset the production downturn during the quarter. Both banana and pineapple are considered as the major contributors of fruit crops in the region.

Tax collections in NorMin up by 27% in 2Q

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- The intensified tax collection efforts in Northern Mindanao continue to pay off as the region again posted increase in collections during the second quarter of 2016.

Engr. Cecilio Clarete, chief economic development specialist of National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) in Region 10, said in a media forum that the tax bureau collected P3.43 billion during the quarter, up by 27 percent from the P2.70 billion collections made in the same quarter in 2015.

Citing figures from the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), Clarete said the growth was broad-based with receipts from Value Added Tax (VAT) and Other Taxes posting higher than average growth rates at 45 percent and 52 percent, respectively.

In terms of share, collections from income taxes accounted for the largest share with P2.14 billion or 62 percent followed by VAT with P971 million or 28 percent.

All revenue district offices (RDO) in the region also logged positive growths

Cagayan de Oro RDO remains the top collecting district which posted P2.07 billion collections or 61 percent of the total receipts while Bukidnon RDO collected P487 million (14%), Iligan RDO with P460 million (13%), Ozamiz RDO

with P262 million (8%), and Gingoog RDO with P142 million (4%).

Clarete said the positive performance of BIR is attributed to its continuing surveillance on tax compliance of individuals and establishments as well as notification and closure of establishments violating tax laws under the Oplan Kandado drive. (APB/PIA-10)

Fun walk held to honor elderly CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, October 3 (PIA) – The Department of Health (DOH) and Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (Philhealth) spearheaded a fun walk on October 1 to honor elderly Filipinos while the entire country observes the “Elderly Filipino Week’ every first week of October with the theme “Pagmamahal at Respecto ng Nakababata, Nagpa-

paligaya sa Nakatatanda.”

Dubbed as “Walk for Life” the activity started with as fun walk, followed by a Zumba and program at the SM City grounds. Elderly participants likewise received medical services like anti-flu vaccines and blood testing for glucose and more.

The activity aims to promote health and wellness amongst senior citizens as well as raise awareness on programs and benefits

accorded to them by the government.

The same event was done simultaneously in all key cities across the region as well as in other parts of the country.

“Through this activity we seek to enhance cooperation with agencies especially those directly implementing the expanded senior citizens act,” DOH Chief Administrative Officer Edward Acta said. (JCV/PIA-10)

Dodu Abrio & the Viajeros headlines Playing for Change 2016

AGAIN, Dodu Abrio & the Viajeros leads the annual global movement Playing for Change Day Cagayan de Oro Year 4. This year’s theme “Call for Peace & Rapid Change through Music” made a success last September 24, 2016 held at Centrio Ayala Garden. Dodu Abrio as the main organizer of the event was very grateful for having PFC CDO Year 4. Special thanks to the Rotary Club of South CdO, Centrio Ayala Mall CdO and to the City Tourism & Cultural Affairs Office as the main partners.

10 local bands participated the cause..

This time, three places participated all over the Philippines, South Cotabato,

Pangasinan, and Cagayan de Oro City.

Playing for Change is a multimedia music project, created by the American producer and sound engineer Mark Johnson with his Timeless Media Group, that seeks to inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music.

Playing For Change was born in 2002 as a shared vision between co-founders, Mark Johnson, Raan Williams and Whitney Kroenke, to hit the streets of America with a mobile recording studio and cameras in search of inspiration and the heartbeat of the people. Producers Johnson and Enzo Buono traveled around the world to places including New Orleans, Barcelona, South Af-

rica, India, Nepal, the Middle East and Ireland. Using mobile recording equipment, the duo recorded local musicians performing the same song, interpreted in their own style.

Among the artists participating or openly involved in the project are Vusi Mahlasela, Louis Mhlanga, Clarence Bekker, David Guido Pietroni, Tal Ben Ari (Tula), Bono, Keb’ Mo’, David Broza, Manu Chao, Grandpa Elliott, Keith Richards, Toots Hibbert from Toots & the Maytals, Taj Mahal and Stephen Marley. This resulted in the award-winning documentary A Cinematic Discovery of Street Musicians.
