Lawmaker seeks review of funeral industry regulations By Filane Mikee Z. Cervantes of PNA

A lawmaker at the House of Representatives has filed a resolution seeking for a review of pertinent rules and regulations governing the funeral industry after at least 120 unclaimed and rotting cadavers were discovered in a funeral home in La Loma, Quezon City. Kabataan Partylist Rep. Sarah Elago cited in House Resolution No. 488 the recent incident involving Henry Memorial Services, which continued accepting unidentified bodies even upon receiving a closure order for violations of the sanitary and health code. tion from October 17 to 18 at the Xavier University - Southeast Asia Rural Social Leadership Institute (SEARSOLIN). Government agencies, the academe, civil society organizations, and indigenous peoples’ communities

managing and conserving the mountain ranges of Kitanglad, Kalatungan and Pantaron in Bukidnon and Mt Balatukan in Misamis Oriental gathered to learn about community-based forest management strategies, research and technology

employed in the context of the region’s development plans of the government, and to recommend ways and opportunities for partnership. The consultation is also organized for participants to provide inputs and help strengthen PTFCF’s fiveyear program framework for supporting sustainable forest management in partnership with various stakeholders.

The stakeholders themselves expressed their desire for the formation of a network and alliance of forest managers from Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental so that collaboration, resource, and knowledge sharing and complementation of initiatives can take place, and achievements can be shared as they work together. Inputs will then be incorporated in the final program framework for presentation

No death benefits for barangay officials if involved in drugs: DILG

CAGAYAN de Oro City-Although death benefits are provided to barangay officials who die during their term, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) reminds that this benefit excludes those who died due to their involvement in illegal drug activities. DILG Northern Mindanao Regional Director Arnel M. Agabe said that in line with the present administration’s persistent drive against drugs, no benefits shall be granted to a deceased barangay official if the cause of death is either suicide, or unlawful acts resulting to death. He clarified that this is pursuant to Section 20, Rule IV of DILG Memorandum Circular No. 2008-124 on the Revised Rules and Regulations Implementing Executive Order 115

That said marriage did not last long due to lack of love and affection until the relationship manifested incompatibility and sustained misunderstanding between petitioners and reached the point of irreconcilability and they separated for almost four (4) years now, they decided to separate live physically in bed and board thereby, executed Memorandum of Agreement in order to formalize their separation. Since their separation , they had never been communicating or supporting either financially or emotionally to each other,neither minding each other affair’s; Petitioner’s seek judicial decree of divorce, thereby, severing their marriage bond on May 28, 2002, so that they will have free hand to do what a single man or woman could do without marital burdens. Reconciliation between them had already been diligently employed but all proved futile. WHEREFORE, finding this petition to be sufficient in form and substance, set the initial hearing of this case on November 18, 2016 at 9:00 a.m at which time, date and place. Any interested party may appear and show why the petition should not be granted. Malatamban of Malaybalay City, Bukidnon garnered the outstanding small farmer award. On the other hand, the DOALNARA Restoration Society of the Philippines of Claveria, Misamis Oriental was hailed as the outstanding farmer’s group. For garnering the individual awards, Caga-anan, Talam and Namocatcat shall be receiving Php25,000, Php20,000 and Php15,000 cash incentives, respectively. Meanwhile, the luminaries under the group category shall be bestowed with prizes in the form of funding assistance to an OA project proposal of the winner amounting to Php500,000, Php300,000 and Php100,000 for PLGU MisOcc, MLGU Plaridel and DOALNARA, respectively. “With the engagement of our regional achievers to OA, it is no surprise, that indeed, OA is gaining ground in the region, and hopefully, it will reach greater heights in the coming years,” Natindim said. # (JLOlson, DA-RFO 10)

Luisa, from our hotel, to the church, to the reception, and then back to the hotel. -oooDRIVER WILLING TO SACRIFICE FOR HIS PASSENGERS: Unfortunately, the reception took all of four hours to complete, which, unknown to me, was way, way beyond the carbarn time for the van. When Manuel was taking us back to the hotel, his bosses called him, and told him that I should be made to add P1,400.00 more as our fare (or a total of P2,500.00) for the length of time he and the van waited. He asked me to talk to his bosses, and, of course, I insisted on paying only the amount that I agreed to pay, which is P1,100.00. The bosses refused to accept my payment, compelling me to say I am not paying the added amount. A few minutes later, Manuel received another call from his

bosses, where I heard him talking in Visayan. I did not fully understand what he was saying, but I got the drift: to avoid further complications, Manuel decided that he would be the one to shoulder the additional P1,400.00, certainly a big amount for him, which he would be able to pay by appropriate deductions from his 13th month pay in December. -oooGOOD HEARTED AND DEDICATED WORKER: When I asked why, he said that although he was supposed to return the van at 5 pm, he did not do so because my family and I were still at the reception. He chose to simply wait for us. “It was my work at stake,” Manuel said. All the while that he was talking to us, he was calm, respectful, without raising his voice one bit. When I fully understood what he was trying to do, something snapped in my heart. I thought then that a good-hearted and dedicated worker like him should not be penalized for upholding the dignity of his work,

My aunt lived with a selfish, critical husband for over 50 years. She was a nice, friendly person on the outside; but inside she was full of anger and unforgiveness toward her husband. As a result, she became very sick with arthritis, asthma, and diabetes and

eventually died from it. Doctors say these are just some of the illnesses that often come from years of bitterness and anger in a person. It actually releases a deadly poison in our body. My aunt was the one who suffered and paid the highest price for refusing to forgive her husband. When we refuse to forgive that person who has wronged and hurt us, we’re really hurting ourselves. That’s why Jesus that if we will forgive others, then we will free ourselves from the prison and pain of unforgiveness. You see, “When we refuse to forgive others, we block

off the same bridge we need to cross to receive our own forgiveness from God.” Jesus Christ warned us: “If you refuse to forgive others, I cannot forgive you.” So we not only pay the price of physical sickness and suffering, but far worse, Jesus said we will keep ourselves out of heaven and suffer forever in the most painful place that exists. So do yourself a favor today and forgive that person who has wronged and hurt you. Maybe it’s a brother or sister. Your wife or husband. Your father or mother. Your boss or an old friend. Just ask Jesus to forgive you for all of your

WHILE in Beijing, President Duterte announced our “separation” from the United States. That produced shock waves in the American media. Washington professed to being “baffled” by the Philippine leader’s pronouncement. American boys in Manila promptly predicted a national calamity. Granted, maybe the choice of the word “separation” might have been unduly dramatic. In the hours after President Duterte pronounced that word, members of his Cabinet clarified that the Philippines will stand by its treaty obligations and all commercial agreements will remain normal. The only departure from the usual will be the cancellation of joint military exercises next year as they are unnecessarily provocative undertakings. The trade secretary offered the word “rebalancing” to describe the apparent shift in our foreign policy position. One might as well use the word “reinvent” to describe the process the

We were asked to deploy troops to Korea and then to Vietnam to be foot soldiers for the US Army. We were a frontline state in Washington’s “containment” policy. America reserved the right to define who should be our friends and who should be our enemies. We managed to open diplomatic relations with Beijing in 1974 only after Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger did so. It was US strategic consideration and not Philippine national interest that defined our foreign policy for us. When we conducted war games with the US mili-

tary, the unspoken enemy was China. In 1991, the Philippine Senate courageously voted against extending the Military Bases Agreement. That agreement allowed the United States to establish bases on our land that were largely beyond the reach of our municipal law. Errant US servicemen simply returned to base to escape Philippine law enforcement. That agreement gave the US military extraterritorial privileges unheard of everywhere. The decision to eject their bases was a just one. It was a decision that substantiated our sovereignty. Washington did not take kindly to our Senate’s decision. We fell to the bottom of the list of America’s

friends. Military assistance dwindled to a trickle, and our armed forces were allowed to deteriorate. It was only after America’s freedom of navigation through the South China Sea by Beijing’s “nine-dash-line” claims that Washington re-discovered us. We were given some hand-me-down ships and expected to carry the brunt of confronting the Chinese Navy. President Duterte has valid reasons to be unhappy with the way our foreign policy was ultimately shaped by Washington, using the Cold War mold. It was from this mold that we are “separating.” We can be friends, but we will no longer be pawns. Having thus “separated” from the American-made

manacles that bound our foreign policy for too long, we are now truly free to follow what our national interest dictates. We are now truly free to renew the ancient ties we had with our neighbors. We can freely associate with other nations, whether or not Washington approves. This is what a truly independent foreign policy should be. It is certainly not about burning bridges with old friends. It is entirely about freely deciding to build new ones according to our practical needs. President Duterte understands that fully --- and boldly.

AFP cites XU as ‘ROTC unit of the year’ for third time FOR the third time, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) hailed Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan’s Philippine Air Force - Reserve Officer Training C orps (PAFROTC) as the country’s “ROTC Unit of the Year CY 2016.” In a courtesy call with XU president Fr. Roberto C. Yap SJ on Thursday, October 20, XU PAF-ROTC commandant Captain Jaclaine Lennor R. Barra said that their unit is “very happy and very proud” of this achievement. “We have seen the efforts and the activities of the PAF-ROTC of Xavier.

They are doing great and we have maintained high standards of discipline,” said Barra. “Our students, especially our advanced cadet officers, must maintain the excellence so we can reach our goals and get the recognition not just from the Philippine Air Force, but also from the Armed Forces of the Philippines,” she added.
