Fish Conservation Week 2016 calls for cleaner, pollution free ocean – BFAR By Jasper Marie Oblina-Rucat
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The 53rd Fish Conservation Week this year calls for the need to clean and make our ocean pollution free, says Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) regional director Visa Tan-Dimerin.
In Talakayan sa PIA on 20 October 2016, she explained that the annual celebration is to give importance for the need to conserve for sustainable development so that we will always have fish in the ocean.
Dimerin said that the focus now is the clean-up activity in coastal areas such as coastal clean-up, scubasurero, and IEC with coastal communities on waste disposal. Meanwhile, Asuncion J. Maputol, chief, Fisheries Management Regulatory Enforcement
Division said that they have been conducting an IEC on RA 10654, an act to prevent, deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, amending Republic Act No. 8550, otherwise known as “the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998” and its Implementing Rules and Regulations.

Tikalaan Central Elementary School joins the celebration of United Nations day yearly by having a search for little Mr. and Miss United Nations. This usually happens on the month of October. The activity focus on the Grade VI-pupils since it’s their last year in elementary. First, the principal include the celebration on a meeting. The next day, Grade six parents were also called by the advisers (Yours truly, Mrs. Juliet O. Dagoc and Mrs. Nezil M. Oco) and discuss about the United Nations celebration. Since parents were aware of the said activity, they didn’t hesitate to agree. There were 45 boys and 58 girls joined the search. They were assigned
to different countries to be represented. Parents also helped. Some really bought national costumes for their children. On the other hand, teachers in the lower grades helped by making sashes and flaglets for the candidates. The flaglets they made were brought by their pupils during the parade and were decorated around the covered stage after. The search happened last October 21, 2016, last day of the first semester. The parade started at 7:00 in the morning while the search proper started at 11:30 so, morning classes were not disturbed. It ended at 4:00 in the afternoon. Last September 18, 2016 Talakag distric t 1 conducted a festival of talents. It was participated by 15 schools including Dagumbaan Integrated School bringing 16 pupils with their respective talents and

One of our country’s greatest problems is Garbage disposal. Accordingly it is the reason why our country is easily flooded because the drainage system which are transformed into dumping areas which prevents the flow and absorption of water. Aside from causing flood, it is also a source of dreaded diseases. We can prevent this entire catastrophic event if every one of us would be responsible enough in disposing our garbage. We have to commit ourselves to help preventing more destruction of lives and properties because of these floods. We have to take this problem as our prime responsibility as concerned individuals and citizens of the country. We have to be involved in the segregation of our wastes. We have to do something to make
others aware of this need to resolve our problems. And above all we need to have a full understanding of the issue and reformation of attitudes so that, we will develop concern towards the safeguard of our environment. Ever since, The different public schools in the country has been teaching their children the proper waste disposal and was strengthened When Department of Education’s War on Waste Crusade in 1995 was implemented. But, still as these children went home and in the community many of them forgot how they would disposed their garbage and how important it is . Hence, We need to change our attitudes towards this issue and take it seriously and consider Proper Waste Disposal as our leading responsibility.

Arthur Ward, categorizes teachers into four: Mediocre, Good, Superior and Great. As teachers, of course we do not want to be mediocre who tell, nor the good teachers who explain. It is not also enough to aspire To be a superior teachers who demonstrate but we should set our ultimate goal to be the great teachers who inspire students, But how? Well, there’s no harm in dreaming especially when we dreamt of harnessing to the fullest our inherent potentials as teachers, being the shapers of young minds and ultimately, making them the great minds who will lead and guide the destiny of our nation! Easier said than done….but if we aim high and desire to go for it then there are always possibilities to succeed, otherwise, you will suffer the pain at your back while waiting the guava fruit to fall into your mouth, the Juan Tamad way! Well as for me, there are steps to follow in order to realize a specific goal, namely; 1. Know yourself, in terms of capabilities, resources, knowledge, etc. then set your goal (don’t forget to aim high).2. Work, work and work pa more). 3. Actually there’s no number three if you have done your best already ….you only have to realize that your effort had already paid off and you are now starting
to do another goal in life because our journey to achieving our fullest potential is yet ahead of us and be mindful that we are now in the 21st century where the approach of education is now seemingly different or shall I say, there’s a need to redirect or maybe supplement our teaching knowledge and strategies considering the information technology age of today! As teachers, we should not lagged behind our student as far as use of modern gadgets and computers is concern, So for one, we must be computers literate (even at the age when our minds are no longer open to new ideas) for us to be able to cope the demands of our presents generation. Another, we should now consider education as globally competitive because the world seems to get smaller in space due to modern technologies where you only need a click to go to places, hence the need to learn the various socio-cultural practices of other countries to be able for our students to gather information ahead of actual exposures. Lastly, our teaching innovations should gear towards molding our students to become internationally marketable products that will supplement our exports and bring back our country the needed dollars to boost our economy.
