CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) has bankrolled a project to donate 4,200 computer tablets, books and other e-learning materials in Cagayan de Oro City schools spread over the next three years. Under a memorandum of agreement inked last Monday (October 17, 2016), Jica will finance the project while suppliers Keirinkan Company and KJS Company Ltd. will provide the materials. Smart brings digital learning to IP students in Bukidnon

Smart Communications recently donated digital learning packages to two schools in Bukidnon serving students from indigenous communities. The Schoolin-a-Bag packages given to Sta. Teresita of Miarayon Community School and Paaralang Elementarya ng Miarayon each contain a solar panel as the schools have no electricity, a laptop, a tablet, a mobile phone, a pocket WiFi with starter load, LED TV, and learning modules. Ten schools in remote areas in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao will receive School-in-a-Bag units from Smart this year. This is part of the company’s efforts to

Yolanda? Sendong? Ondoy? Pablo? These names sound familiar to us not because they are names of politicians. They are not even names of hottest hunks and actors in the Philippine movies and televisions. These are the names that we never wanted to remember or even hear. mere mention of these names brings back the trauma, the tears and the fears. The Philippines being hailed as “the sick man of Asia” may be true as seen in its map image being likened to an old man or a hunchback. Add to that its geographical location being surrounded by big bodies of water, lying close to the Pacific Ocean causing it to become an easy victim to typhoons, tsunamis, and storm surge. Philippines also stands in a very seismic area along the Pacific Ring of Fire where two major tectonic plates collide making the country most prone to earthquake and volcanic eruptions. In about 300 volcanoes, 22 are active. An average of five earthquakes every day shakes the country.

Indeed, Philippines is a disaster-prone area. Based in the 2011 World Risk Report the Philippines ranked third in the list of most disaster risk country worldwide. According to NDRRMP 2011-2028 (National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Plan), between 1997 and 2007 alone, 84 tropical storms had entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility killing 13,155, affected 51 million families, and lost P158,242 billion in agriculture, infrastructure and properties. They say that experience is the best teacher. With all the strongest storms that shook, swept and swiped us, we should have learned from the worst weathers. We must never back down instead we must build back better. We must be like the bamboo, surviving the toughest typhoons by swaying, stooping and slouching but never surrendering. Let us prove to the world that the Philippines may be the world’s number one disaster-risk country, but we Filipinos are stronger than the storm!

After being awarded as the Fastest Filipina Age Grouper for 2016 at the recent Cobra 70.3 Ironman in Cebu, what’s next for Lezette Albarote? Cebu 70.3 Ironman races are always special to me, because this is where I started to believe that I can compete. It also means extra pressure to perform and hope for a podium finish. Becoming a winner also demands that you develop the ability to handle pressure. Triathlon is very challenging. It’s an endurance sport as much as it is a mental sport. The strongest doesn’t always win the race. It’s the most clever who wins the race. Mental skills such as the ability to deal with setbacks and adversities during the race are important factors to win. I am looking at joining races abroad, too. I would like to compete with the best in the world. The level of efficiency, strength and competitiveness of foreign athletes are far better than what we have here in the local triathlon scene. I would like to be able to challenge myself and conquer international races. I intend to join triathlon races until I’m 80 years old.
