CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -The results of the 2015 Census of Population (POPCEN) show that Region X hits 4,689,302 as of August 1, 2015, an increase by 391,979 compared to the 4.30 million population in 2010.

Among the five provinces comprising the region, Bukidnon recorded the biggest population with 1.42 million followed

by Misamis Oriental, excluding Cagayan de Oro City, with 889,000.

STEM workshop for DepEd teachers set ILIGAN CITY -- The College of Education (CED) of the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) has been given authority to hold a workshop for in-service Department of Education teachers (DepEd-10) at the college’s amphitheater on October 11-13, 2016.

The three-day workshop is for free, and will see CED faculty leading discussions and conduct activities regarding interdisciplinary contextualization for STEM education. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

BUTUAN CITY – Over the years, the Department of Agriculture (DA) has been collaborating with various institutions for research and development.

It has been closely working with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) to implement various research and development (R&D) projects to provide solutions and possible answers to increasing food production and food security.

One of the projects implemented in the field is the Philippine Rice Information System (PRISM). It is an online system that consolidates and presents accurate, timely and location-specific information on the status of the rice crop.

Teacher plays various roles in the classroom. Aside from teaching the lessons, teacher functions also as classroom manager. Effective learning couldn’t take place if classroom is poorly managed. In the presence of disorderly and disrespectful students in the classroom, teachers could not deliver the lessons spontaneously.

Hence, both the teacher and the students suffer.

IPC teams up with PIA to keep students ‘off the streets and off to school’

IPC (IP Converge Data Services, Inc.), a pioneer in local cloud and data center services, is pleased to announce that it is now a partner of the Philippine International Aid (PIA), a U.S.-based charity that has been providing health and educational assistance to underprivileged youth.

One of the PIA’s core initiatives is the “Off the Streets-Off to School” scholarship, a program that helps parents and teachers to keep kids in school. Administered in partnership with the PhilAsia Assistance Foundation, the Off the Streets–Off to School program provides scholarships annually to more than 1,000 children in Metro Manila.

Together with their partners, PIA helps students go through elementary and college. The student’s academic progress is monitored throughout the academic year and they are also encouraged to correspond with their respective benefactors.

An all-volunteer organization, PIA was established in 1986 to provide assistance to disadvantaged youth in the Philippines and the United States. Their core programs provide educational assistance to more children in the Philippines than any other U.S.-based charity. In 2013, aid was provided to more than 2,400 students.

Under the program, IPC will fund the school expenses of 5 students of the Eulogio Rodriguez Integrated School in Mandaluyong City. The funds provided will take care of tuition fees, books, supplies, field trip costs, uniforms, shoes, and allowances for meals and transportation.

“Supporting the Off the Streets-Off to School program was an easy decision

for us because IPC is always looking for ways to use its resources and expertise to give back to the community,” said Reynaldo Huergas, President of IPC. “Everyone of us is very excited to be part of this amazing project. We know that a lot of students are forced to drop out of school because of money and hopefully with our partnership with PIA, we can help those students stay and learn so that they can have a better future.”

DTI chief to Ayala Group: help us mentor MSMEs Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez encouraged executives of the Ayala Group of Companies to help the government in elevating the competencies of Filipino micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) during the Ayala Sustainability Summit on 11 October 2016 in Makati.

In the dialogue session between the trade chief and the Ayala business group, Sec. Lopez emphasized the need for continuous innovation and entrepreneurial skills and mindset for MSMEs to prosper.

The sharing of leadership skills and best practices from the private sector are critical components in enhancing the ability of MSMEs to thrive in a globally-competitive business environment, according to the trade chief.

Business sector groups were invited to extend additional support in mentoring and passing on the business know-how to Filipino MSMEs, alongside existing government efforts including establishing Negosyo Centers and conducting training and seminars across the country through SME Roving Academy. The Kapatid Mentor Me is a business advisory program with private sector partners like the Go Negosyo, the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and

Industry, the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the Philippine Franchise Association, the Association of Filipino Franchisers, Inc. and other groups.

Sec. Lopez also called on the business group to adopt an inclusive business model, where MSMEs are integrated in the value chain.

“The Go Lokal! brand is part of DTI’s MSME push, improving market access by mainstreaming MSME products in major malls,” he said, adding that DTI already started partnering with some of the country’s mall owners. He expressed hoped that Ayala Group of Companies will also consider the Go Lokal! initiative.

On the ease of doing business, Sec. Lopez noted that DTI and other government agencies work together to streamline business permit processing and licensing from an average of more than a week to two days or less using a unified form and a maximum of two signatures only.

He also added that the government recently partnered with the UK Embassy to help implement the Project Repeal, geared towards eliminating red tape by systematically removing redundant, antiquated and burdensome policies across

the bureaucracy.

“Success begins when you show concern for others,” said Sec. Lopez, adding that the MSME development agenda is a priority of the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte as part of its poverty reduction strategies.

DPWH-DOT links Partnership with Three Schools in Tangub City Division

Following the success of the conduct of BRIGADA ESKWELA 2016 Last May 30 to June 4, Department of Public Works and Highways and Department of Tourism (DPWH-DOT) inked its partnership with Villaba Elementary School, Isidro D. Tan Elementary School and Sta. Maria Senior High School to continue to bring the above schools experience another level of support for classroom shortage solutions.

The partnership aims to donate One (1) classroom each school mentioned above to address classroom shortage. With these donations, DPWHDOT enables the schools

to depart from makeshift classrooms and efficiently cater day-to-day learning sessions/ instructions with a conducive learning environment duly equipped with complete lighting and water facilities.

The existence of these classroom facilities made possible thru the kind support and technical assistance of the District Engineer Reynaldo Sagon of the Second District Engineering Office DPWH, Misamis Occidental.

Before we differentiate Teaching as a profession from a job, let us know first “what is teaching?”

Teaching is defined as the specialized application of knowledge, skills and attributes designed to provide unique service to meet the educational needs of the individual and of society.

The direct interaction between the teacher and the student is the most important element in teaching and learning. Teaching is not only done by teachers to nurture people but also the parents who were the first teachers to nurture their kids and home is their first school.

Now it’s time to define the terms, Profession and a Job. Profession is something a little more than a job; it is a career for someone that wants to be part of society, who becomes competent in their chosen sector through training; maintains their skills through continuing professional development and commits to behaving

ethically, to protect the interests of the public.

On the other hand, Job is an activity, often regular and often performed in exchange for payment.

Philippines’ Josephine Medina gets free flights for three years Malaysia, 12 October 2016 - AirAsia on Tuesday gave away free flights to Asean P ​ aralympic medallists at a gala event held a​ t​ the ​Asian Aviation Centre of Excellence (AACE) in Malaysia.

Gold medal winners received a lifetime of free flights, while silver and bronze medal winners received five and three years’ worth of free flights respectively.

DA-10 welcomes new chiefs

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Officials and employees of have welcomed their two new heads at the Regional Field Office 10 of the Department of Agriculture.

Incoming Regional Director Carlene C. Collado receives the DA-RFO 10 banner from outgoing Regional Director Lealyn A. Ramos as symbol of passing the agency’s leadership during a simple turnover ceremony at the regional office, October 6.

The appointed director is a Certified Public Accountant, who has previously worked as the OIC RD of DA-RFO 12.

In his message, Collado assured that responsibility, accountability and transparency will prevail under his watch.

He likewise gave his marching order to the DA officials and employees in attendance to continue doing well in their respective duties.

Cagayan de Oro City was the fastest growing area in the region with an average annual population growth rate of 2.23 percent during the period 2010 to 2015, followed by Lanao del Norte (excluding Iligan City) with an annual population growth rate of 2.05 percent.

Among the cities, excluding Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, the most populous is Valencia City in Bukidnon with 192,993 persons followed by Malaybalay City in Bukidnon with 174,625 and Ozamiz City in Misamis Occidental with 141,828 persons.

The top three most populous municipalities are also found in Bukidnon: Quezon with 104,116 persons; Maramag with 102,089; and Manolo Fortich with 100,210 persons.

Guinsiliban in Camiguin, on the other hand, is the least populous area with only 6,281 persons followed

by Binuangan (7,515) and Sugbongcogon (9,226) which are both in Misamis Oriental.

Of the 2,022 barangays, Carmen and Lapasan in Cagayan de Oro recorded the largest population size with 70,492 and 43,611 persons, respectively.

The 2015 POPCEN was undertaken in August 2015 pursuant to Republic Act No. 10625, also known as the Philippine Statistical Act of 2013 and Executive Order No. 352 – Designation of Statistical Activities That Will Generate Critical Data for Decision-Making of the Government and the Private Sector, which stipulates the conduct of a mid-decade census primarily to update the population count in all barangays nationwide.

“It’s been 100 days since we began our work in the DSWD, but it really feels like it’s been more than that. I have learned so much about the department and it has become all the more clearer now what our work here should be: ensure that the department is able to function as best and as efficiently as it can so we can serve the Filipino people better. As the national government’s lead welfare agency, the tasks of the DSWD to serve the poor are myriad and heavy: we are up to challenge, and we promise to do our work as honestly, as efficiently, and as quickly as possible,” Sec. Taguiwalo said.

Sec. Taguiwalo has been consistently announcing that she wants her administration in the DSWD to focus on helping Filipinos gain access to sustainable livelihood opportunities so they can eventually gain economic independence and become resilient against economic shocks.

“What means and resources the department has will be utilized to benefit the poorest of the poor in Philippine society, and to assist all other Filipinos who are need of emergency assistance. It is not just during calamities that the DSWD is active – it actively helps Filipinos on a daily basis by providing emergency assistance, social interventions, and information on how to go about accessing the services and programs of other government agencies,” she said.

“We will release information on the mechanics of the SLP and Kalahi-CIDSS and the plans for both programs in the coming weeks. We want these programs to become better and more meaningful use to the Filipino people by ensuring that they are also venues of education and genuine empowerment,” Sec. Taguiwalo said.

Finally, Sec. Taguiwalo announced that immediately after the first 100 days, the DSWD leadership will go about putting together the department’s strategic plan for the years 2017 to 2022.

In essence, this strategic plan will mirror what was begun in the first 100 days which are encapsulated in six calls: swift and compassionate service to the people; service that gives no room for corruption; equal treatment of communities; ethical government service; assistance to those affected by armed conflict; and genuine empowerment of communities.

“The DSWD also aims to contribute to the national government’s efforts to improve economic status and standing of the poor, as well as support the ongoing efforts to bring about a just and lasting peace in the Philippines through reforms,” she concluded.

PRISM aims to collect and deliver crop information in the country, using data from satellites, crop models, smart phone- based surveys statistics, and maps to de-

liver actionable information on crop seasonality, area, yield, and yield-reducing factors.

“The project has 20 monitoring fields for rainfed and 27 monitoring fields for irrigated ecosystem distributed to Butuan City, and the municipality of San Francisco. The monitoring fields serve as key areas for data-gathering on yield, fertilizer and pesticide used by the farmers and crop health assessments. These data are collected and sent to a secure centralized database. After verification, they will be integrated into the information system,” said Richard Tabudlong, Senior Research Specialist and PRISM Focal Person.

Capacity-building for LGU partners has been conducted to maintain and manage PRISM and to train others to do the same. The Research Division holds seminar and consultations with stakeholders to keep them informed about the project.

Based on PRISM estimates of rice areas by province as of second semester of 2015, a total of 27 municipalities in Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Sur were covered in which 21,921 hectares were included in the information system.

Incidences of major pest injuries were also identified.

Aside from collection and delivery of rice crop information in Region 13, PRISM also aims to strengthen the DA’s capacity to collect, understand and use the information for decision-making to achieve food security.

Senator files new measure to help address malnutrition

Just like Senate Bill nos. 23, 123, 160, and 548, Aquino’s proposed measure seeks to fight childhood malnutrition through feeding program for infants, public kindergarten and elementary school children.

In filing the new measure, the Senator urged government agencies and other stakeholders to help craft an effective feeding program that can help address malnutrition and hunger among poor students.
