AGAYAN DE ORO CITY - The Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation Inc. has elected a new President for 2017 last October 25, 2016 during their Election of Officers Meeting at the Oro Chamber Board Room. PCCI Vice President for Mindanao, Mr. Antonio “Tony” Uy, having been appointed as chairman of the COMELEC during

the election proclaimed the winners. Also present in the meeting was outgoing President, Mr. Jeffrey T.

Ang who likewise congratulated the incoming Board of Directors of Oro Chamber. The incoming President, Mr. Robert E. Pizarro has won the votes of his fellow trustees as he presented his platform and plans for the Chamber. For his administration, he aims to promote a good business climate for Cagayan de Oro and Northern Mindanao, and

strengthen government and business partnerships. He wou l d a l s o l i ke to take advantage of the Duterte administration’s thrusts, the first President to hail from Mindanao, to develop the countryside and to ramp up economic activities in the rural areas. Dads okays amendment of Whitewater Rafting Law CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- The 18th City Council in its regular session enacted Ordinance No. 13131-2016, amending Article VIII, Section 1 (B) and Article XI, Section 2 of Ordinance No. 11087-2008, otherwise known as the Whitewa-

ter Rafting Ordinance of Cagayan de Oro City. Amended in the said ordinance is the provision in Article VIII, Section 1 (B) which states that, “all whitewater rafting river guides shall be required to undergo City Disaster Risk

He reaches out to those on the fringes of society. Earlier, he attended to those suffering from physical limitations. Now it is to those who perceived as social outcast. Jesus calls a despised tax collector, an act that produces a violent reaction from the religious officials. Tax collectors are viewed in Jewish culture as defectors from Israel and as notorious sinners. They were considered as

encountered by farmercooperatives in relation to the implementation of AVAs. “The activity consolidated details and ironed out issues in preparation for the upcoming Implementers’ Evaluation Workshop to be held in Davao City,” Ignacio said. Aside from Ignacio, the workshop was also facilitated with the Program B eneficiaries Development Division Lawyering team under the leadership of Provincial Agrarian Reform Program Officer (PARPO) Andre Atega.

BPI Family Savings Bank CDO is 3Q 2nd topmost performing branch outside NCR By Mark D. Francisco

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The BPI Family Savings Bank branch in Cagayan de Oro bested ten other business centers nationwide, placing only second to North Luzon, as the topmost performing branch outside Metro Manila for the third quarter of 2016. For this, BPI Family Savings Bank vice president for Vismin Dennis Fronda personally pinned the accolade to CDO branch heads Rica Gador and Mark Sumido last Tuesday. BPI Family Savings Bank also used the event as an opportunity to recognize its top three performing real estate brokers for the third quarter of the year covering the months between July and September. Emerging as number one was Abegail Saab. The event, held at the spacious KaVe Restaurant function room inside posh Limketkai Luxe Hotel, also doubled as motivational speaker Marianne Mencias’ platform in the BPI Reconnect Series. Fronda explained that the BPI Reconnect Series was conceptualized to in-

spire its clients and agents alike. For the October 25 engagement in Cagayan de Oro, it was the real estate brokers selling housing loans who were pampered via the Mencias’ inspiring messages. Mencias’ sharing, complete with a multimedia presentation culled from her What’s Your Life Masterpiece book, was down-to-earth and very relatable. Indeed, real estate brokers are being pampered year-round by BPI Family Savings Bank considering the role they perform as the bank’s frontliners to its customers. In the first quarter of the year, they organize this so-called Brokers Circle where the top performing brokers of the past year were recognized. By summer, they will have a sports tournament by company. For the fourth quarter of this year, the Reconnect Series was conceptualized. Aside from housing loans, BPI Family Savings Bank also offers auto loans, personal loans and Ka-Negosyo loans for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Jonamil Davison (Balubal NHS), Niña Moreno (Kong Hua School); youth department heads John Miguel Razonable (city council secretary), Kayra Gen Lugo (city administrator), Reneila Maureen Eguia (city information officer), Cherie Barbie Bequiso (CSWD officer), Kester

Galarpe (CDRRMO officer), Flor Ann Bernas (city tourism officer), John Paulie Undag (city agriculturist), Dianarah Lofranco (civil registrar) – were inducted into office by Mayor Oscar Moreno during the weekly flag raising last October 24 at City Hall. From thence, they im-

mediately assumed their duties for the whole week such as sitting side by side with their respective adult counterparts and formulating recommendations at the end of the week based from what they have learned. The Rotary Youth Officials Week is one of the biggest annual projects of

Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro. It aims to cause leadership development among the youth in the city. Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro is the oldest club of Rotary International District 3870, celebrating 69 years in existence as of 2016.

State of Northern Mindanao nutrition By Mark D. Francisco

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Twenty-point four (20.4) percent of children less than f ive years old in Northern Mindanao are underweight as of 2015 or 2.8 percent higher than the 17.6 percent posted in the 2013 results. This and other results of the 2015 Updating of the Nutritional Status of Filipino Children were revealed in a forum organized by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) last Thursday. Of the malnourished children, Lanao del Norte and Misamis Oriental have the highest number at 22.3 percent followed by Bukidnon (19.5 percent). There was tremendous decrease of underweight children in Misamis Occidental (from 25.4 percent to only 15.8 percent) but even this could not pull up the overall regional

figures. In the same bi-annual survey, it was also discovered that 27.6 percent of children between five to ten years old in Region 10 are malnourished and 7.3 percent of tweens between ten to 19 yeas old are obese. Eight-point four (8.4) percent of adults in the same region have chronic energy deficiency. Meanwhile, it was also found out that 74.4 percent of infants in Northern Mindanao were breastfed within an hour after they were born. Fifty-nine point five (59.5) percent of these would continue exclusive breastfeeding after five months from birth. Forty-nine point seven (49.7) percent of these babies immediately underwent screening for congenital hypothyroidism, congenital adrena hyperplasia, phenylketon-

uria, G6PD, galactosemia and maple syrup urine disease after they were born. Seventy-five point seven (75.7) percent of them were fully immunized by the time they reach two years old. And 83.1 percent were given Vitamin A supplementation. Sevnty-two point five (72.5) percent of the kids here were also dewormed. The FNRI report likewise showed that Northern Mindanao significantly had a lower total food intake compared to the national estimate. Inake of all food groups was lower in Northern Mindanao except for cereal, starchy tubers and vegetables compared to the national level. Twenty-two point three percent of adults in the region experience high blood pressure, ranking fifth of the 14 regions nationwide although it ranked 13th in the prevalence of high

cholesterol among adults. Northern Mindanao also has 16.2 percent of the adult population as smokers. And 45.4 percent of the adult residents here consume alcohol. The 2015 Up dat ing of the Nutritional Status of Filipino Children was culled from a combination of the following: anthropmometric nutrition survey, clinical and health survey, dietary assessment survey, infant and young child and maternal nutrition sur vey, socio-economics and food security survey, government program participation survey, measurement of physical growth, face-to-face interview, measurement of blo o d pressure and one-day food weighing. It was done from September to November last year across Mindanao. A total of 12,047 households in the island participated in the survey.
