AGRICULTURE Secretary Emmanuel “Manny” Piñol on Tuesday ordered the immediate cancellation of import permits for all agriculture products, except rice, for the protection of local farmers.

Piñol, in a press conference held at the DA central

office in Quezon City, explained the move was to stop alleged “recycling” of import permits and “misdeclaration” of agriculture products by unscrupulous individuals.

He said importers will have to apply permit to import directly at the DA Secretary’s office.

From the results of the studies, it can be safely concluded that sporting activity has a favourable effect on absenteeism: students who participate in sporting activity had less sick days. Most studies suggest that such programs can contribute to a reduction of absenteeism.

The Inward Foreign Manifest (IFM) and Import entry declaration should be given to DA, the BIR, and concerned stakeholders at least two days before shipment arrives, so there is an ample time to alert the Bureau of Customs (BOC) of suspicious shipments, it added.

In the last five years, SINAG research revealed that close to PHP200 billion worth of agricultural goods were smuggled into the country.

It also showed that rice, with a market value of Php94 billion, is the single biggest agricultural commodity being smuggled into the country.

This was followed by pork at PHP40 billion, then sugar at close to Php25 billion.

Other commodities monitored by SINAG include chicken, garlic, onion and carrots.

According to the group, a market value of Php200 billion translates to around Php60 billion to Php80 billion in lost revenues for the government since these agricultural commodities are supposed to be protected and levied a higher tariff of 30-40 percent.

“Smuggling exposes the country to unsafe and high risk agriculture and food

products as smuggled goods do not pass quarantine and food safety inspection,” the group said.

“The common fight against smuggling was to prevent the further erosion of our farmers’ livelihoods. The smuggling of agricultural products endangers the survival of the agriculture industry which is the very fiber of our society,” it added. (PNA)

Zacal of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (formerly Mindanao University of Science and Technology), the dynamic duo of food tech guru delivered a presentation on Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Good Hygienic Practices (GHP), Sanitation Standard Operating Procedure (SSOP), Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) and other standard quality control measure that should be followed to prevent food contamination.

“Though a food product will cost you more or force you to spend a little extra than the usual, always settle for quality,” Phoebe L. Galeon said during her presentation.

Meanwhile, HACCP performs a detailed analysis of the whole production system to identify physical, chemical and biological hazards and those points where prevention and control measures should be applied to minimize or reduce risks to acceptable levels. The steps taken to minimize risks should be properly registered and kept as a proof of action adopted.

For her part, Project Officer Cristine A. Galupo said that the training participants are expected to create a simple SSOP and GMP Plan at the end of the 3-day training.
