ILIGAN City––Thousands of supporters of embattled Mayor Celso Regencia took to the streets as they staged a “die-in” and prayer rally at the city’s downtown area Saturday morning calling anew the Duterte administration to hasten the process for the chief executive’s release.

Incarcerated more than

a year ago at the city jail in Barangay Tipanoy, Regencia was tagged as the alleged mastermind on the ambuscade of former Iligan City Rep. Vicente “Varf ” Belmonte as he was about to exit the Laguindingan Airport compound in Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental, in 2014.

In that incident, Belmonte survived while three of his aides were killed when

a group of armed men waylaid his convoy.

Regencia’s case is presently lodged at the Regional Trial Court-Branch 77 in Quezon City in the sala of Judge Ferdinand Baylon, after it was transferred from a local court in Initao, Misamis Oriental.

There were attempts by authorities to bring Regencia to a detention facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Bicu-

tan, Quezon City, for him to appear before the court but these were stymied by his supporters who trooped to the city jail in Tipanoy to block the jail guards and policemen from transporting him.

His followers believe Regencia is innocent of the multiple murder charges filed against him.

At the rally, dozens of them staged a die-in while

the other supporters raised their hands and placards.

As Regencia languishes in jail awaiting trial, Vice Mayor Jemar Vera Cruz said it is the people of Iligan who are suffering as the mayor could not properly function due to his condition.

New Zealand pledges US$3m for peace efforts in Mindanao; eyes bigger bilateral trade with PH DAVAO City––New Zealand has vowed to donate US$3million over the next three years to support the peace efforts in conflictaffected areas in Mindanao.

David Strachan, New Zealand ambassador to the Philippines, told a press conference on Wednesday evening at the Marco Polo Hotel here that they want to be involved in providing sustainable livelihood for the combatants and affected families.

He said they were encouraged to help after seeing tremendous development in the peace efforts of the new administration.

“I think, with the peace process taking shape now, it seems a good time to do what we can to support the

government’s initiatives since that Mindanao generally is gonna get a lot more attention from government here, and it’s a good time to step up and be even stronger partner in development process because we genuinely committed to addressing poverty levels and helping stabilize the region,” he said.

Strachan said they are involved in the project of the Food and Agriculture Organization in North Cotabato that supports the reintegration of former combatants to the workforce and provides livelihood for the people.

He said this project will support 10,000 households or roughly 52,000 people, and at least 15 barangays in five municipalities of North Catabato.

“This aims to reestablish agriculture and fisheries by these livelihoods and prove resilience for future disasters and strengthen food security,” he said.

A similar program that supports 20,000 households is being implemented in Maguindanao, he said.

Aside from the support to agriculture and the peace process, he said they are also assisting two barangays in Agusan del Sur for the integration of school disaster risk reduction plans to disaster-prone communities.

“Under this project, we’ve trained almost 4,000 students in disaster risk reduction awareness, preparedness, and risk assessment,” he said.

He said that they hope to

contribute toward the normalization of the conflictaffected areas in Mindanao.

Stratchan added they are supporting the dairy farm project of the National Dairy Authority in Cagayan de Oro City by providing cows and sharing New Zealand’s dairy technology and expertise.

He said they are also supporting the program of the US Department of Agriculture-funded Agricultural Cooperative Development International-Volunteers in Overseas Cooperative Assistance that helps the indigenous peoples develop productive coffee farms.

He said the farm in Cagayan de Oro is one of the 21 focused farms they are helping throughout the country, along with supporting the Misamis Oriental State College of Agriculture and Technology in terms of curriculum development and training

of dairy farmers.

At t h e s a m e t i m e , Steachan said New Zealand is optimistic with the Duterte administration and aims to double bilateral trade by 2025.

“We came very optimistic that we can find a lot more to enhance trade and economic links in this region,” he said.

He said they are building on the strengths between the two nations in terms of trade, economic, and education that are moving “towards a positive direction.”

Banal said the current bilateral trade between Philippines and New Zealand is currently pegged at NZ$1 billion a year.

He said they are mostly buying commodities such as bananas and pineapples from the Philippines and services offered by the country’s business process

He said the enhanced partnership also benefits the Philippines in terms of industries as they are importing car batteries made

by Filipinos.

“One thing notable in New Zealand that not many people are aware of, majority of the car batteries in New Zealand are made from the Philippines,” he said.

Strong people to people links are at the core of the fast growing bilateral relationship, Strachan pointed out.

“Although many New Zealand companies have been actively doing business in Mindanao, we are very excited and still consider Mindanao as an uncharted market with massive potential for more business opportunities,” said NZ Trade Commissioner Hernando Banal II. The Filipino population in New Zealand has grown in recent years to around 50,000 or around one percent of the population.

The press briefer added that tourist arrivals between both countries have also increased. Last year, around 24,000 New Zealanders traveled to the Philippines and more than 17,000 Filipinos visited New Zealand.

“Filipinos are valued members of the New Zealand. Kiwis appreciate their warm spirit and work ethic. With the availability of Philippine Airline flights from Manila to Auckland, I am optimistic the steady exchange of people will continue to increase,” said Strachan.

Improved road to bring more tourists in Misoc

THE tourism industry in Tangub City, Misamis Occidental is seen to get a boost with the newly paved road leading to its scenic Hoyoyoy Highland Botanical Garden.

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 10 Director Evelyn T. Barroso said a total of P53.4 million was spent for the concreting with grouted riprap lined canal of Sta. Maria Hoyohoy Road.

The improved Sta. Maria Hoyohoy Road will allow tourists to have an easier and smoother trip to Hoyohoy Highland Botanical Garden where the large collection of plants for scientific studies, the breathtaking view of Panguil Bay and the vast resources of Mt. 7. The DENR assumes no responsibility whatsoever to compensate or indemnify bidders for any expenses incurred in the preparation of the bid.

Completion of the Works is required within ninety (90) calendar days from receipt of the Notice to Proceed.

Bidders should have completed, within two (2) years from the date of submission and receipt of bids, a single contract similar to the Project, with at least 50% of the cost of the ABC. Bidders should also have at least five (5) years experience in building construction.

FORMER President Ferdinand Marcos was finally buried in the cemetery of heroes. To many people, he may not be a hero but to his family and die hard supporters, he was someone a giant, so closed to their hearts, respect and deserving of honors. A dead man absolutely deserves forgiveness.

Marcos may have committed serious blunders as a person and leader, unpardonable crime and anything more, but he is not around anymore to ask for kindness and forgiveness. Like everyone else, he was a sinner, perhaps more sinner than some of us, but believe me a dead man commits

no sin anymore. God will forgive him.

I wish to reiterate, I was a victim of martial law too, a genuine victim unlike others who come just to open their mouth without any basis. When the dictator declared military rule in the country, I became jobless as I shut down my growing newspaper publication. Both Enrile and Ramos could have been killed that very moment, but Marcos saved them.

In fact, under Articles 134 and 139 of the Revised Penal Code, all of these acts and maneuvers of the LP senators could constitute either rebellion or sedition.

WE have done a lot of traveling with President Duterte in the past few weeks. Even that sounds like an understatement. In what seemed like a blur, we went to Laos, Vietnam, Brunei, China, Japan, Thailand and Malaysia.

If schedules hold, we should be on that epic journey to Peru for the Apec summit meeting. That will be a journey of 10,000 miles and many hours of discomfort sitting in an airplane. That translates into a lot of face time with the President, whether we want it or not.

We have all had our fill of being up close and personal with the President.

When he was mayor of Davao City, he used to do night patrols, surprising policemen literally sleeping

on the job. He often cruised around his sleeping city alone, on a motorbike or in his taxi. The habit dies hard. From those nocturnal inspections, the President accumulated a lot of stories.

Those stories he regurgitates before his staff during our downtimes. These are stories that sometimes find their way into the impromptu speeches he prefers delivering. His experiences as mayor are vivid in his mind.

After all, the man spent two good decades of his life transforming a chaotic and violent city into a peaceful and progressive one.

information and arrive at a reasoned conclusion. Members of his Cabinet who have policy options to advance appreciate the discussions on the aisle. These are rare opportunities to hold the President’s attention and, perhaps, win his approval for their advocacies.

When enough Cabinet members are in the plane, the aisle conversations become de facto policy meetings. Many significant decisions were arrived at 35,000 feet up in the air. Sometimes it seems we are about to break a record here for policymaking while aloft.

The Duterte presidency is young, but the time we have so far spent with him on

his trips allowed us many insights into how he works and how he thinks. Those insights deepen every time we board a plane with him.

To begin with, the President has the memory of an elephant. He remembers important details. He has extensive knowledge of history that he references when dealing with current issues. He can quote passages from books from memory. He can deliver a long lecture on something that happened a century ago, capturing all the color and subtleties of events. He is a man who has read much, and it readily shows.

Protesters condemn Marcos’ burial at Heroes’ Cemetery DAVAO City––Victims of human rights violations under martial law and members of militant groups gathered along San Pedro St. near City Hall in Davao City late Friday afternoon to express their outrage while black ribbons were tied around trees along Roxas Avenue fronting the Ateneo de Davao University, where a candle-lighting rite was held early evening.

Protest actions were also held at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University and in Cagayan de Oro City.

Despite the drizzle, protesters gathered along San Pedro St. in Davao City to to express their disgust over the burial of the dictator in the Heroes’

Cemetery, insisting he did not deserve a hero’s burial.

Fe Salino of the Samahan ng Ex-detainees Laban sa Detensyon at Aresto (SELDA) in Southern Mindanao Region, said “I could not describe exactly how I feel right now … but I encourage the children of this generation to learn what happened during Martial Law. I encourage them to talk to us so that we can tell them our struggles during Marcos time,” she said.

Salino said she suffered in the hands of hte military during martial law and her husband was among the victims of forced disappearances during the 14-year martial rule of Marcos.

Marcos was elected President in 1965 when the term of office of Presidents was still four years with only one re-election. He was supposed to have ended his second and last term in 1973 but declared martial law in September 1972, and ruled until he was ousted by the People Power revolt in February 1986.

For her, the wounds are still fresh as she recalled the experience of being battered and slapped by the military during her detention for nine months at the PC Barracks or what is now known as Camp Captain Domingo E. Leonor, the headquarters of the Davao City Police Office.

She demanded justice for the victims, for her husband’s disappearance, and for herself.

Makaulaw Carlo Olano, spokesperson of the Kilusang Mayo UnoSouthern Mindanao, described the burial as “shameful.”

“Sekreto ang pagpalubong kay makauulaw nga si Marcos ilubong sa LNMB (His burial

was done in secret because it’s shameful that he would be buried at the LNMB),” he said .

He said a lot of the victims under Marcos’ regime were arrested, detained or killed, on suspicion they were members of the New People’s Army.

He encouraged Dabawenyos to participate in public discussions and to listen from the victims themselves.

Toto Bolcan, 75, member of SELDA-SMR, said seniors like him are remaining living witnesses of the abuses during martial law.

“You (children) listen to us so that you would know the truth in this country,” he said.

He said Marcos should have been buried in his hometown in Batac, Ilocos Norte.

Bolcan, who was arrested thrice during martial law, recalled rallies were held every now and then during Marcos time to protest against the injustices.

As president of the country and soldier during World War II, Marcos deserved to get honors and buried at the Libingan. One of his children humbled themselves by saying his burial at the heroes’ site does not mean he was a hero. He was just a president and so far he never was convicted in any court for crimes.

I wish to point it out that the problem in our country is we ourselves.

We are people that could hardly be managed. Many of us are so proud of ourselves for nothing. Statistics show we are top in Asia for criminality. Just recently, a politician was quoted as saying, the country is rich, but assets are in the hands of some corrupt leaders. The worst thing is this kind of revelation does not embarrass us any more because it has seemingly been seen as normal and just part of life.

The refusal of our government to bury Marcos in the Libingan has dragged for decades. It was politics that refused to hammer the nails of Marcos coffin and have the dictator given honors.

I look at this as nothing but useless revenge and the excesses of practices in a democratic state. It is pure and simple a disrespect of the dead. Now the protesters want Marcos removed from the Libingan, a matter that only adds to ignorance, hatred and endless political war. I always believe, though, that everything in this world that has its beginning, shall also have its end. If the matter has not yet ended, I predict it will soon end. I just want our government to safeguard the tomb of Marcos in the Libingan against vandalism and thieves. Let Marcos rest in extreme peace.

Summer in November – Yamaha Rev Camp: Mati Yamaha Motor Philipines (YMPH) recently took more than 200 Yamaha Club members on a scenic touring ride from Davao City to the pristine waters of Dahican beach in Mati, Davao Oriental through another installment of their Yamaha Rev Camp.

The riders took-off early morning in Davao City for a 4-hour leisurely ride to Menzi Beach Park and Campsite in Dahican. Everyone had to contain their excitement as they followed the 30 kilometer

per hour speed limit within the City of Davao. As the convoy reached Panabo, the riders had the opportunity to open up their throttles and enjoy the open road flanked by tall palm trees. The twisty mountain roads of Mati also served as treat, having a beautiful ocean view in the horizon. Some just had to stop to take time taking in the scenery. One attraction in the area is the view of an island the locals call “sleeping dinosaur” as its sshaape

resembles that of a giant reptile sprawled on the sea.

Upon arriving at the venue, the guests were greeted by colorful tents and a sumptous lunch feast. Yamaha facilitated some friendly games before giving everyone some free time in the afternoon. At the dinner party, a Motoworld representative raffled off some of their products.

Motoworld is a motorcycle gear and apparel retail chain currently operating in Luzon and Visayas. However, they announced during the event that they will be opening two new outlets in Davao City and one in Cagayan De Oro by first quarter next year.

Yamaha also presented the recently launched TFX 150 to their loyal customers.

A video presentation highlighted the features of the newest addition to Yamaha’s line-up. After which, live entertainment ensued to the delight of those in attendance.
