P5-T earners to benefit from unconditional cash transfers THE poorest 50 percent of households earning P5,000 or less a month apiece will get unconditional cash transfers of up to P6,000 a year each in the initial phase of the tax reform program submitted last September by the Department of Finance (DOF) to the Congress. Finance Undersecretary Karl Kendrick Chua said highly targeted social protection programs to vulnerable sectors, rather than providing outright tax exemptions to both rich and poor, would better shield them from the impact of the reforms in tax policy and administration that the DOF is pushing under its proposed Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion Act. “We propose to do a
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — In a press statement released on Tuesday, November 15, Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan has appealed for understanding and cooperation as it deals with its historic financial crisis to date. The decline in the financial health of XU, the statement said, is “unprecedented in our 83-year history.” As the university traverses the K+12 transition years, this financial crisis is “expected to get worse before it can get better.” According to the statement, the losses are a result of decreasing enrollment from the highest of 16,313 in SY2010-2011 down to 13,729 in SY2016-2017. This falling trend is aggravated by the loss of tertiary enrollment during the K+12 transition years (2016-2020) as the senior high school program is being established throughout the country and there are no President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and members of his delegation go over some documents during their bilateral meeting with students for two college year levels. top Malaysian officials led by Prime Minister Dato Sri Haji Mohammad Najib Bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak in the Prime Minister’s

Improved road to bring more tourists in MisOcc
The tourism industry in Tangub City, Misamis Occidental, is seen to get a boost with the newly paved road leading to its scenic Hoyoyoy Highland Botanical Garden. Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 10 Director Evelyn T. Barroso said a total of P53.4 million was spent for the concreting with grouted riprap lined canal of Sta. Maria Hoyohoy Road. The improved Sta. Maria Hoyohoy Road will allow tourists to have an easier and smoother trip to Hoyohoy Highland Botanical Garden where the large collection of plants for scientific studies, the breathtaking view of Panguil Bay and the vast resources of Mt. Malindang Ranges Natural Park can be seen. Aside from facilitating
access to scenic and natural attractions, the completed project will address traffic congestion caused by the influx of tourists during Christmas season. Tangub City, tagged as the Christmas Symbols Capital of the Philippines and the little Baguio of Misamis Occidental, is frequently visited by tourists during Yuletide season, for its recreation of famous landmarks in the world using colorful lights and glowing decorations. About Tangub Tangub City is located at the Southern curve of Dshape Misamis Occidental Province, part of Mindanao. Tangub City is composed of 55 barangays spread over a land area of 16,572 hectares. From national government agencies to local communities
PLDT calls for a national consensus to support rollout of broadband infrastructure LEADING telecommunications and digital services provider PLDT Inc. (PLDT) is calling for the harmonization of national policies and local government regulations to speed up the deployment of broadband infrastructure and support the vision to transform the Philippines into a digital nation. Echoing an industrysupported resolution, PLDT suggested that a standard permit system be set up to minimize bureaucratic delays and strengthen stakeholder
support for the rollout of network infrastructure to more areas in the country. In a speech delivered at a recent summit hosted by the Department of Infor-
mation and Communication Technology (DICT) for government units and ICT players, PLDT and Smart Communications Senior Vice President for
Network Services Mario G. Tamayo presented current challenges in the rollout of wired broadband infrastructure. See rollout, page B5
