CELEBRATE VOLUNTEERISM VOLUNTEERING has been an integral part of the lives of people and communities all over the world. Individuals and institutions benefit from

the valuable assistance of volunteer workers who share their knowledge, skills, time and resources in the areas of technical assistance, social services,

Do right and your life will be alright The Gospel of Jesus Christ (November14, 2016-Monday) Luke 7:1117” now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. And he came and touched

the bier: and they that bare [him] stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother. And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, that a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people. And this rumor of him went forth throughout all Judaea and throughout

impact to them, plus their attitudes will be strongly stricken. This also connotes the reason why the Palarong Panlalawigan is implemented. As teachers, we should always encourage our pu-

BALUBAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL FORGES MOA FOR A 3-MONTH FEEDING PROGRAM WITH MASSA FOUNDATION By Ceryll D. Celetaria

YESTERDAY’S ANSWER

Biblical reflection

Balubal National High School forged Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the school’s SchoolBased Feeding Program (SBFP) with the Marian Foundation Assistance for Spiritual and Social Achievement (MASSA) during its Feeding Launching Program on November 7, 2016 at Balubal National High School, Purok 1, Balubal, Cagayan de Oro City. The MOA signing of school and the MASSA Foundation was represented by the School Head, Ceryll D. Celetaria and the MASSA Foundation Founder Rolando Delfin respectively. The executives of MASSA Foundation were also present headed by Mary Ann Hipolito the Program Director, Dr. Norma Simburio, Technical Institute Administrator. The partnership gives the school an estimated cost of Fifty Five Thousand Pesos (55,000.00) every

month or with the total estimated cost of One Hundred Sixty Five Thousand Pesos (165,000.00) for Three months. This answers the provision of feeding among the 120 students whom 19 are severely wasted and 101 are wasted. This blessing for our students had become possible through the linkaging done by Mrs. Kristine Arig, the faculty member of the school. During the said event, the Local Government Unit of Cagayan de Oro was also present and represented by City Councilor Suzette Magtajas, Education Committee Chairman. It was as well graced by the President of the West Rotary, Rotarian Erna Maagad and Rotarian Engr. Ferdinand Espiritu. The Barangay Council of Barangay Balubal was in full force attending the event, headed by the Barangay Chairman Vivian M. Malingin, together with her Barangay Kagawads, Reynante Razalo, Chairman on Education Committee, Pablo Bactong, Dionedes Rosel,

Larry Pajo, Jean Alconde and Patrina Malingin. The Parent-Teacher’s Association (PTA) officers headed by the GPTA President Ernie Bade were also around and showed their full support through the provision of manpower during the cooking of the food for the students. Mr. Juan Mingo of the Division Office of DepEd Cagayan de Oro City represented the Office of Reynaldo E. Manuel, Jr., Ph.D. CESE, the Asst. School Division Superintendent, now the Officer In-Charge of the Office of the Schools Division Superintendent. According to one parent, “Nalipay jud mi nga nahatagan ug grasya among mga anak nga ma libre ug kaon kay usahay mulakaw ra jud siya sa school nga walay kaon, usahay walay sud-an”. The school, the parents and the Barangay Council felt so grateful that this blessing came and it would somehow help the entire community lessen its malnutrition rate in which according to Kag. Razalo it is about 60 percent

of school children in the entire barangay. Along with this event was the offering of skills training on haircut and massage, again by the MASSA Foundation and it was intended for the parents of the feeding program recipients. The said training was set to provide employment for parents who will be found capable and ready for job placement still through the MASSA Foundation. Initially, the school and the Barangay Council have already framed an initial and tentative arrangement of constructing barber shop in the barangay once the parents are ready to operate the said shop. That is the reason why Dr. Simburio, the Technical Institute Administrator was present during the event together with Rex Acain of TESDA for the orientation of the prospective trainees. MOA signing for this purpose will also be scheduled before November 14, 2016.

K12 Ground-Breaking in the Midst of ASEAN Integration By MITCHEL O. DERAMAS Kindergarten Teacher

Philippines is the last country in Asia along with the two countries (Angola and Djibouti) are behind in the implementation of the K12 program. The developers believe that a 12- year program is found to be the best period for learning. Globally, the Filipinos are well known to be competitive. Yet, what hinders us from becoming even more competitive is our current educational system. This is the reason why the Philippines is advocating the implementation of the K-12 plan. We can never deny that the government is now facing voluminous problems, such as lack of budget, classrooms, school

supplies and teachers in the implementation of the program. But the implementer’s of this program are ready to address the necessary needs to bring out the quality education to our nation. With the challenges posed in the implementation of K to 12 program, the government is all set with the classrooms and infrastructures. The improvised curriculum is designed to for the world-class standard to address the poor quality basic education. The K to 12 vision of progressive and transformative education is being primarily driven by an effort to meet standards of education in the global world. T he cha l l e nge s are pegged to the education sec-

tor to address the challenges; Commission on Higher Education (CHED) uses outcomes-based education as a scheme in the fields of instruction, research and other aspects of higher education. For the basic education, the K to 12 is the answer. Challenges are both from the implementers and those directly affected by the program. Parents in particularly strongly resistance the program, especially these from the marginalized society because that would mean another expense. However, even before the implementation of K to 12, the lack of classrooms and teachers already exist. And now with k to 12 insertions, the demand for qualified faculty also increased. So this additional 2 years in

the K to 12 programs require teachers with a specialized educational background. In short, the educational reform will transform ASEAN into a region with free movement of goods, services, investment, skilled labor, and freer flow of capital. Apparently, the goal of the K to 12 program is an acquirement of the 21stcentury skills, such as innovation, media abilities, communication and getting a right career suited to students expertise. To sum it all, with the new K to 12 program future Filipino students will be ready and better equipped to join overseas universities at the undergraduate level and will be ready enough for employability.

another to promote family, community and society’s welfare. Through the years, this Filipino brand of volunteerism evolved to engage all sectors -government, not-for-profit, academic institutions and corporate groups to participate in volunteer service for development. Recognizing the important role of volunteerism in nationbuilding, the Philippine Government has designated the month of December as the National Volunteer Month (NVM). NVM aims to build nationwide public awareness and appreciation of volunteerism, create the environment for voluntary action and recognize volunteers as partners in development. Through NVM, all sectors of society are enjoined to participate and promote their causes and agenda that support volunteerism. Since its declaration in 1998, NVM caps the year-long activities of the volunteer community in the country as a fitting recognition to their selfless dedication and commitment to serve people and communities in need. The focal point for the NVM celebration is the Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordinating Agency (PNVSCA). PNVSCA is assisted by a National Volunteer Month SteeringCommittee (NVM-SC) composed of representatives from the government and the private sector in planning and organizing the event. To cascade the celebration at the local level, NVM Regional Committees chaired by the NEDA Regional Offices and the Regional Planning Office of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao are also constituted. Sister Eva Fidela C. Maamo, SPC, MD, serves as the NVM Honorary Chair for 2015-2016 and leads the NVM advocacy campaign. The theme of NVM 2016 is, “Volunteer for Sustainable and Inclusive Development: Isulong, Ibahagi, I-ugnay, Isagawa!” in support of the Philippine commitment to the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the government’s agenda of poverty alleviation and good governance. Volunteers and volunteer groups and organizations are enjoined to be part of the growing network of the volunteer program and to participate in this year’s NVM. Some of the suggested activities are organizing and/ or participating in volunteering activities, media promotion, volunteer fairs, conferences, launch of volunteer programs, volunteer recognition, etc. Build hope, Change lives. governance, biodiversity conservation and management, climate change and disaster risk reduction management and water quality. Consistent with the initiatives in the first summit held in Iloilo City in 2012 and the second summit held in Marikina City in 2014, the City Government of Cagayan de Oro, together with the Cagayan de Oro River Basin Management Council, is in the thick of things, preparing inputs culled from its Sendong experience for the hosting of the 3rd International River Summit. The 3rd International River Summit is a global platform for exchange of knowledge and experience towards the building of an inclusive agenda for sustainable development and resiliency of river basin ecosystems. Its mission is to bring together eminent leaders and stakeholders to share knowledge and best practices to formulate a blueprint of needed actions to address pressing issues affecting river basins and their communities. Philippine Watershed Management Coalition President Raoul T. Geollegue is hopeful that these will advance river basins management across the country. He explained that the summit aims to bring eminent leaders and stakeholders to share their knowledge and best practices that will form part in the blueprint of needed actions that will address pressing issues affecting river basins and their communities. The local organizers said they are expecting around 800 to 1,000 delegates during the 3-day summit set at the Pryce Plaza Hotel. There will be tours offered to participants where they can choose going to Dahilayan or whitewater rafting or Mapawa river trekking or a mangrove eco-park tour or a reflection tour at Divine Mercy Shrine or an immersion with indigenous peoples in Dansolihon or an eco-farm tour in nearby Baungon, Bukidnon. The event is co-hosted by the local government of Cagayan de Oro City, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Cagayan de Oro River Basin Management Council and the League of Cities of the Philippines. Various ambassadors and international agency partners have already committed to speak in the plenary sessions to include Russia, Netherlands, Bangladesh, United Kingdom, and Australia, among others. Geollegue, meanwhile, stressed during the “Talakayan sa PIA” media forum held at the Limketkai Luxe hotel last November 8 was the state of the Cagayan de Oro River Basin, even as he said that unless there is a serious intention to do something and correct the

Chamber of Commerce supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)-Winrock International. Senator Cynthia Villar, in her keynote speech, said, “The agriculture sector sets as the engine that propels Caraga to proclaim its place as one of the growth areas in Mindanao with its chosen flagship product, the Caraga Lobster.” Villar, who chairs the Senate committees on Agriculture and Food, and Government Corporations and Public Enterprises, stressed that “Encouraging the establishment of a more agrirelated business is one of the key strategies to support in boosting growth and development of the agriculture sector as well as improving the income of farmers, fisherfolk, and agricultural workers.” To put in place the needed and suitable interventions in agriculture, the DA continues to strengthen farmer organizations through consultations and dialogues that have been undertaken with the different stakeholders. The DA capacitates farmers by providing training and introduces them to new technologies and business strategies for them to become farmer entrepreneurs. “The CARAT Expo is a manifestation that agriculture, fishery and trade in the region is alive and ready to take on the challenges of globalization. Apart from fulfilling our mission to provide available and affordable food for all, DA is committed to providing our farmers the much-needed support in finding a good market for their product,” said DA Assistant Secretary for

While massive tree planting has been undertaken by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Geollegue said the trees planted are still small. “This is a social issue. Everybody should be on board to solve the problem right now,” he said. Geollegue also called on development planners to focus on the extensive rehabilitation of the grassland and barren areas at the headwaters instead of gray infrastructure like they did when Tropical Storm Sendong hits the region in 2011. Thousands of people in this city and the neighboring Iligan perished or went missing due to Typhoon Sendong, which rainwater poured into lowering towns and cities submerged residential and commercial areas.(PIA-10/ MF-MDN)

According to experts, it is alarming since the river swells too much, which may result to an increase of the river current and cause the redirection of its flows. The ongoing river protection has to be augmented with measures to restore the depth of the river, Ocon cited. As a result, Councilor Ocon proposed that quarrying be allowed at the CDO River in order to remove the sandbars and restore the deepness of the river at no cost to the government. Rotary Foundation marks 100 years of humanitarian service By CHENG ORDOÑEZ Executive Editor, BWM

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Rotary Foundation has fought big and small battles in its 100 years of helping humanity -- from worldwide eradication of poliovirus to supporting President Duterte’s fight against illegal drugs. Tonight, more than a 100 people are given due recognition for their financial support to Rotary Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Rotary International (RI), as Rotarians usher in its hundredth year with a Recognition Night to honor Foundation supporters worldwide. Here, Rotary International District 3870, led by District Governor Miriam Ruth “Jing” Dela Calzada, honors supporters at a ceremony at the Platinum Ballroom, Mall berry Suites. The occasion, hosted by the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro Premier, is graced by Past RI Director Daumonguiller

eradication of polio. That’s the number one external priority of Rotary International. The

Protecting the Interest of every MORESCO II Member-Consumer- VICE GOVERNOR JOEY G. PELAEZ and GOVERNOR BAMBI EMANO attended the recently-concluded synchronized Annual General Membership Assembly (AGMA) of Misamis Oriental Electric Service Cooperative II (MORESCO II) last October 29, 2016 in Medina, Misamis Oriental. Vice Governor Pelaez intentionally opted to join the Member-Consumers who attended in MORESCO II’s designated main hub located at its main office in Medina, Misamis Oriental where the electric cooperative’s Board of Directors and Management were also present. Since it was a synchronized AGMA, other Member-Consumers of MORESCO II were advised to attend at the selected 159 barangays satellite venues close to where they reside which was presided mostly by barangay officials. Vice Governor Pelaez is strongly opposed to how MORESCO II conducted its synchronized AGMA because it defeats its purpose to intensify the involvement and participation of the Member-Consumers to air their concerns that warrant an immediate response on that instance from the Management and the Board of Directors. He added that he will pass a Resolution in the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Misamis Oriental to strongly question the validity of the 2016 AGMA of MORESCO II. Notably, the synchronized AGMA deprived Member-Consumers who were not in the main hub to participate in the active discussion or interaction between the Board, the Management and the consumers and cannot even hear, agree or dissent with some significant issues and concerns that may be raised by other member-consumers. It may be recalled that for the past three years the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Misamis Oriental has passed several Resolutions authored by Vice Governor Joey Pelaez pertaining to issues and concerns on energy. As a staunch advocate of electric cooperative Member-Consumer interest, Vice Governor Pelaez has worked well in lobbying their collective concerns to the pertinent national offices, Senators and Congress and even asked the full support of all Vice Governors in the country to pass a Resolution supporting the same Resolutions on Energy. photo supplied

first US grant given by Rotary Foundation to the Philippines in the tune of 760 thousand to erdicate polio through the Paul Harris Society. It started here in the Philippines and our dream is to eradicate it in the face of the earth, this year,” Past RI Tumangan said during a press conference, Friday, Nov. 11, 2016, at the Limketkai Luxe Hotel, here. With Tumangan and Dela Calzada during the press conference was district Past Governor Manny Along. Rotary, along with its partners, has reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent worldwide since its first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. Rotary is very close to eradicating polio, but still needs some ways to make a global impact and protect children against polio forever. Rotarians have helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries. For as little as $0.60, a child can be protected against this crippling disease for life. For the District, Dela Calzada said Rotary Clubs have a lot of projects. And, these projects are focused on six areas. Dela Calzada identified the six areas as peace and conflict resolutions; maternal and child health care, dubbed as “Dakilang Ina, Ikaw Na!” project; water and sanitation and hygiene project; disease prevention and treatment, which include medical missions, economic and community development; and education and literacy project. “Actually, these six areas focus, where we are putting our energy, actually covers all areas of a person’s life,” Dela Calzada said. The recognition tonight is a milestone event occurring simultaneously worldwide. Rotary International District 3870 awarding tonight is based on the financial contribution

of members, the cash contributions to the Rotary Foundation. “The Rotary Foundation needs, at least, US$300 million to support all the humanitarian educational and peace projects we have worldwide, including ending polio next year or in the next couple of years,” Dela Calzada said. Dela Calzada said their educational programs include symposia and forums on understanding the effects of illegal drugs as their support to President Duterte’s fight against illegal drugs. Both Tumangan and Dela Calzada agree that information campaigns to prevent the youth from engaging in illegal drugs is better than rehabilitation when they are already affected. “We need a lot of funding for these, and the only source of funds are the Rotary Foundation and our partners, including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, governments in the whole world (are also contributing), we have Unicef, World Health Organization, CDC. These are organizations that also help our programs and projects. So, tomorrow (Saturday), we will be, actually, recognizing the Rotarians who have given, no matter how little, $26.50, is the minimum that we will be recognizing for their contributions by given them some token,” said Dela Calzada. Why $20.50? Dela Calzada said its because it was the first amount that was given to Rotary Foundation 100 years ago. Expected tonight are Rotarians from North and Central Mindanao, including the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Malaybalay, Valencia, Gingoog, Iligan, Marawi, Cotabato, Kidapawan, and the provinces of Camiguin Island, Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Cotabato And Sultan Kudarat. The Rotary Foundation offers a number of opportunities to show its appreciation to individuals for supporting its grants and programs. Paul Harris Fellow recognition, named in honor of the Chicago attorney who created Rotary in 1905, is given in appreciation

to anyone who contributes (or in whose name is contributed using Foundation recognition points) a gift of $ 1,000 or more cumulatively to the Annual Fund, PolioPlus Fund, or an approved global grant. Multiple Paul Harris Fellow recognition is given at subsequent $ 1,000 levels. Meanwhile, The Paul Harris Society recognizes individuals who choose to contribute $ 1,000 or more each Rotary year to the Annual Fund, PolioPlus Fund, or an approved global grant. Major Donors are recognized as by The Rotary Foundation as those individuals or couples whose combined giving has reached $ 10,000, regardless of the gift designation. Donors who contribute $250,000 or more become members of the Arch klumph Society. Thus far, a total of thirteen (13) Major Donors have been recognized from the different Rotary Clubs in District 3870. The Rotary Foundation also honors The Rotary Foundation Sustaining Members who have personally contributed $100 or more each Rotary year to the Annual Fund and count toward Paul Harris Fellow, Multiple Paul Harris Fellow, Paul Harris Society, Major Donor, and club recognition banners. It is worth noting that the number of Paul Harris Fellows reached the one million mark in 2016. The Rotary Foundation also Awards millions of dollars each year to worthy projects carried out by clubs and districts working locally and in international partnership. The Rotary Foundation also sponsors the world’s largest privately funded international scholarship program. Rotary also brings together a global network of volunteer leaders dedicated to tackling the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges. Rotary connects 1.2 million members of more than 35,000 Rotary clubs in over 200 countries and geographical areas. Their work improves lives at both the local and international levels, from helping families in deed in their own communities to working toward a polio-free world.

Rotarians led by Past Rotary International Director Daumonguiller “Guiller” Tumangan. Rotary International District 3870 District Governor Miriam Ruth “Jing” Dela Calzada and Past District Governor Manny Along are joined by media practitioners led by Rotarian-Publisher Dante Sudaria of the BusinessWeek Mindanao Corporation in a photo opportunity after the press conference, Friday, November 11, 2016, at the Limketkai Luxe Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City.
