Duterte sees common link with Trump

Catholic bishops have deplored a court decision that allows a hero’s burial for the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos. In a strongly-worded statement, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines hit the Supreme Court’s verdict, which dismissed all the petitions against the government’s plan to bury Marcos at the Heroes’ Cemetery. “The burial is an insult to the EDSA spirit. It mocks our fight to restore democracy. We are puzzled and hurt and in great grief,” said CBCP president Archbishop Socrates Villegas. “It calls on us for greater courage to make the full truth of the dictatorship known,” he said. Voting 9-5 with one inhibition, the High Court said the petitions had no merit, adding that there

So the question that the editors of the newspaper which published the report must answer is this: if Robredo did not directly make a joke about herself and about the protest against her, why was the report entitled “Robredo jokes: will SC oust me next from VP post?” There would have been no problem with that kind of a title, if it was given to an opinion column, or even to an editorial which

is supposed to represent the stand of the paper itself. Unfortunately, if it is to a straight news report that that kind of title was given, as what happened in the Robredo-Ateneo story, it would not only be inappropriate. It would also be a clear distortion of the event depicted in the news story, and this is something that should not be seen in a national daily newspaper, especially one that prides itself in truthful reporting and fearless opinionmaking. -oooSC WILL NOT DECIDE ON THE ROBREDO-MARCOS ROW: Undeniably, the story shows its bias in favor of Robredo---that of wanting her to retain her position as the second highest official of the land, even at the expense of how the protest will ultimately turn out. It also shows its contempt of the highest court of the land, by suggesting, at the very least, that it is incapable of judiciously and fairly deciding on cases involving the Marcos family. Robredo, too, displayed this distrust on the court, by speaking about the Su-

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… `the truth shall make you free’…” (Jesus Christ, our God and Savior, in John 8:32, the Holy Bible). -oooSO, WAS THERE A ROBREDO JOKE OR NOT? The news report which was captioned to project the idea that Vice President Leni Robredo cracked a joke about her possible ouster from her position by virtue of a decision of the Supreme Court in connection with the protest from her rival, former Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr., was totally amusing, and seemed to be a ploy to cause the dismissal of the protest. First, even a meticulous reading of the entire report will not yield any direct statement, much less a joke, from Robredo, relative to that pending protest which, by the way, is a protest that is not even before the Supreme Court, but before the Presidential Electoral Tribunal, a body distinct from the court and where only three of its 15 justices are members. From the news report itself, it would appear that what Robredo joked about was the vice president of the Ateneo De Manila Univer-

plicated in the illegal drugs. If killing of a town executive could be done just as easy as that, I cannot figure out how small town residents can be killed like chickens. I remember President Duterte told his men to kill the criminals and he will be behind them. The problem is who determines the criminals. Who will judge the person to have committed crimes in the absence of trial in court. There should be a solution to criminality in the country. I urge our people, especially lawyers, retired police officers and soldiers to participate in offering things that could end up all odds in the situation. President Duterte should consult the national bureau of investigation and perhaps foreign consultants from Canadian police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and top police officers in the United States of America. More heads are better than one. When I was a little boy, policemen were not armed with guns. They carry baton or “batuta.” And with kill-

ings perpetrated by police officers, I thought maybe we can disarm them and just let them carry the batons. But then I realized that during those days of batons, there were no huge crimes as drug involvement or armed robber/kidnappers and hired killers. It will jeopardize the police. Again, I was thinking we must be stricter in our hiring of officers and everyone must pass through a rigid mental examination by a panel of psychiatrists. I am glad people now are making sounds against the new administration of President Duterte. Many issued criticisms at the way extrajudicial killings are proceeding until this day. Two concerned citizens asked PNP chief Bato why he had to go to Las Vegas to watch boxing while the country is in deep trouble with crimes. And who paid for his round trip ticket on this occasion. After all, Robredo is not only the country’s second highest official at the moment, who is expected to display utmost trust and confidence in the institutions of the government where she is a part of at all times, but is also a lawyer who ought to know that it is not the Supreme Court that will decide on the case against her, but another body, so that it is not fair to be hitting the court in any way over the issue. -oooPLEASE LISTEN: “Ang Tanging Daan” (The Sole Way): a Bible study and prayer session online could now be heard, 24 HOURS a day, in the Philippines and the world at www.facebook. com/angtangingdaan or www.facebook.com/ANDKNK (and look for “Ang Tanging Daan” broadcasts). A mistaken belief

A5

Monday, November 14, 2016

A MISTAKEN belief accompanies each and every one of us daily. Incorrect decisions and wrong doings are part of our daily life. It is almost a ridiculous fact that man wants to know certain truths about mundane things. But really he seems least interested in even mundane truths as

can be read many times in newspapers for example. There seem to be too much rash judgments, and the readers absorb these and make these their own. A fatal attraction! This is sometimes referred to as journalistic mentality wherein accusations are generously made

without proof. Evolution started this trend, when scientists stated, for example, that man evolved from the apes, without proof. The only proof they had was the missing link, and if I am not mistaken, it’s still a missing proof until now. To look for proofs is a mental activity, which is

Remember Ronald Reagan? When he was elected president of the United States three-and-a-half decades ago, the rest of the world broke out in laughter Every American abroad was heckled for having a gradeB actor for president. How could this cowboy say anything wise? How could he animate his lethargic nation and bring about change? By the time Reagan left office, he was respectfully referred to as “The Great Communicator.” Not only was he able to convey his ideas to his people, he also

mounted an economic revolution in the United States. He shifted the great glacier of state-centered economics and opened the door to what was then called “supplyside” economics. On top of all of that, he left office a much-loved president. What made Reagan, who used to play cowboy roles in second-rate Hollywood movies, become such an effective communicator? He did not change his language. He did not couch his message in vague terms. He did not use jargon. In fact, he spoke with utter simplicity to the end—but

always with the earnestness and honesty and great love for his people. He believed sincerely in his message and did not need charts or fancy adjectives to get it across. Rodrigo Duterte is much like Ronald Reagan. No one expects him to deliver an earth-shaking treatise on the human condition. If ever he does that, it will not click. He might as well deliver that treatise in Latin.

mastered. It really is totally neglected in today’s modern education? The man probably stopped thinking even earlier. He has ceased many times to search for the truth. It’s easier to listen to gossip and believe in it. Martin Andanar What a sign of weak minds! With all the bells and whistles – Suzuki Ciaz GLX A/T You don’t have to be a genius to be able to appreciate the excellent value the Ciaz offers. In fact, it took only a few minutes for my 6 year old to get acquainted with the creature comforts of the new sedan from the Suzuki stable. Yes, the inside cabin is a nice place to be in. First of all you have climate control. Then, there is also the Android-compatible entertainment unit where you can watch “Frozen” over and over again. You will get tired of singing along with “Let it go” but you will never go tired of listening to the unit’s excelllent sound quality. This car is perfect for carpool karaoke...and

the huge interior allow more participants to join in the fun. The Ciaz is definitely for extroverts. With a wheel base of 2650 mm, the Ciaz is one of the cars in its category with the biggest dimensions. Using size to work to its advantage, the Ciaz exudes an elegant character that is further supported by its rather conventional color options. Make no mistake though, this car is a nimble daily driver. The turning radius is kept to a reasonable 5.4 meters and the 16-inch alloys on the this GLX variant enable sure footing. Powered by 1.373 cc 44 cylinder 16V VVT engine, it produces 92 hp @ 6,000 rpm and 130 nm @

4,000 rpm. The 4-speed automatic transmission is responsive and offers great convenience in urban traffic. It has an overdrive function for better fuel economy on long distance cruising but iit can be turned of

with a press of a button if you want to experience a bit of sportiness in your driving. Speaking of economy, I was able to achieve an average of 9.5 kilometers per liter in spite of a heavy foot and the terrible

traffic. I suppose drivers in different driving conditions might be able to get significantly better numbers. In the last fuel eco test done by the Department of Energy, the Ciaz manual transmission achieved

27.94 kilometers to a liter. With this top spec variant priced at P 888,000, the Ciaz is one of the more practical sedans in the market. On top of all the bells and whistles, dual airbags, ABS and EBD also come as standard in all variants. Not only do you keep your passengers happy and comfy, you are also ensured of their safety. While the GLX maybe the ideal family car, the base model GL could be a viable option if planning on entering the lucrative applicationbased transportation service industry. At only P 738,000, you’d be sure too get back your investment in no time.

“The GRP President Duterte must be advised against proceeding with such a plan. Such payment of political debt to the Marcoses will undoubtedly be regarded as an act of contempt against the Filipino people’s historic judgment against the Marcos dictatorship,” the CPP said in a statement dated November 10. “For sure, the Marcoses would resent such an unfulfilled promise. But such will be incomparable to the deep indignation that will be stirred among the Filipino people,” it said. The CPP said in giving Marcos a hero’s burial, Duterte “would virtually be spitting on the graves of the tens of thousands of martyrs who laid down their lives in the struggle to end the puppet, brutal and rotten Marcos dictatorship.” It said the decision has put in question Duterte’s assertion of being a Leftist, as the Marcos dictatorship was an “epitome” of the anti–Left. “If Duterte allows Marcos’ body to be dug-up from Ilocos Norte and re-interred with hero’s burial, he would have provided the Marcoses with the ultimate act of rehabilitation,” it added. The CPP said two generations of Filipinos have forgotten “the crimes of the Marcos dictatorship” because textbooks and official teaching in elementary and secondary schools have sanitized his image. Marcos imposed martial on Sept. 21, 1972, a year before his second and last term as president would end. He abolished Congress, enforced the 1971 Constitution without the benefit of a plebiscite, and ruled by decree. Thousands of his opponents and suspected dissidents were either detained or killed. Several others “disappeared” after being arrested by security forces and their bodies have not been found. President Rodrigo Duterte has approved the request of the Marcos family that the late strongman be buried at the Libingan. Many believed the decision is meant to repay the Marcoses for their supposed campaign support to then candidate Duterte. Victims of martial law and other groups filed a petition questioning Duterte’s order at the Supreme Court. The petitioners argued that Marcos does not deserve a hero’s burial due to the abuses during his rule. On Nov. 8, however, the tribunal voted 9-5-1 to dismiss the petitions. (MindaNews)

is no law that prohibits the burial of Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. President Rodrigo Duterte has repeatedly said his decision would help

bring “healing” among the Filipinos. But the bishops warned that Duterte’s move will not bring peace and unity to the country. They also made it clear that peace can only come if there is justice. “Justice demands recognition of the harm done to the people and restitution to the victims,” Archbishop Villegas said. Since his demise in 1989, Marcos’ burial at the heroes’ cemetery had been strongly opposed because of human rights abuses committed during the Martial Law years. The bishops said the dictator had made many people suffer by arbitrary torture and death. “He has deprived many poor people of their basic needs while his family and cronies were enriched,” said Archbishop Villegas. “We do not forget this!” “We will not allow that this be forgotten by the future generations in order that the same strong-hand oppression may not happen again,” he added. The CBCP head also said that “those who do wrong should be made accountable.” However, according to him, this is not being recognized by the Marcos family and his cronies up to now. “Then the victims of human rights abuses have not been properly compensated for,” Archbishop Villegas lamented. “This is a matter of justice.” “We see this as another step to build the culture of impunity in the country. Marcos is no hero! He should not be presented as one,” he said. The Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) earlier said that Marcos’ burial at the heroes’ cemetery will dishonor the efforts of those who fought the dictatorship. The CEAP also said “it will invalidate all that many heroes have spent their lives fighting for.” (Roy Lagarde / CBCPNews)

Veterans Day is a yearly treat by Phividec Industrial Authority. For this year, there was also a medical mission – dental, optical, urology – and dig this, OB/GYN for the spouses of the exsoldiers. Physicians came all the way from the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC). The oldest veteran in Northern Mindanao was likewise honored. Marcelo Polonia, 104 years old and a resident of Impasug-ong, Bukidnon, received a plaque from Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana. In his speech, Lorenzana urged the veterans to use the hospitalization assistance tendered to them by the government. In fact, Phividec Industrial Authority injected P40 million to VMMC this 2016 alone.

Monday, November 14, 2016 Phividec, which was founded in the 1970s to generate income for Filipino veterans, maintains an economic zone in Misamis Oriental and drawing income from 74 mostly multinational firms stationed there.

Lorenzana said the burial will not be a state funeral but will follow the military tradition of burying “a soldier who had done a service to his country.” He said the Armed Forces of the Philippines has already prepared a rifle party of seven Army soldiers who will deliver the succession of volley shots during the burial of the late president. Marcos ruled the country for 20 years, 14 years under martial law which saw the arrests, torture and killings of thousands of Filipinos who opposed him. “It will be a normal funeral. The rifle party is the only involvement of this administration although we will secure the Libingan premises from protesters,” Lorenzana told reporters during a gathering of veterans here on Friday. The secretary said the Marcos family will shoulder all the expenses and attend to the burial arrangements. President Rodrigo Duterte has approved the request of Marcos’ heirs that the late strongman be buried at the Libingan. Victims of martial law and other groups filed a petition questioning Duterte’s order at the Supreme Court. The petitioners argued that Marcos does not deserve a hero’s burial due to the abuses during his rule. The tribunal, however, upheld the president’s order by a vote of nine in favor, five against and one abstention. Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said Marcos will be buried at the Libingan before the year ends. (Froilan Gallardo/ MindaNews)

he i s sp ont an e ou s . He is direct to the point. Sometimes he leaves out the noun, as in “Yang mga human rights …” Sometimes he mutters inaudibly, as if speaking to himself. At other times, he leaves half the sentence hanging. Most notoriously, he uses expletives as punctuation marks. But the audience gets it. They get it even when he proposes out-of-the-box ideas. They get it even when he proposes nothing short of a revolution. In speech after extemporaneous speech, President Duterte has his audiences enthralled. They hang on to his every word. When he pauses to think, there is absolute silence in the hall. When he jokes, there is a ripple of genuine laughter. When he cusses, there is applause. None would call him an orator. His speeches do not

soar. They bite. They jar, like a boxer’s jab. Yet, he communicates. He bonds with his audience. He leads by his mouth. He speaks and the people follow. He galvanizes the nation without the help of a speech writer. This is the truly startling thing. This is a gift, to be sure, to be able to lead with raw language. Most other leaders, when they speak to their people, are assisted by the best and brightest, choosing the best turn of phrase and the most exceptional choice of words. They come across with their literary finery. Mr. Duterte is different. He comes across unrefined. He speaks an English that is quaint, acquired during his days as prosecutor. His Tagalog is understandably stilted. He does not speak the High German equivalent of Cebuano. He is not given to nuance or complexity. He is certainly not pedantic. Yet he communicates. And he does so with great power—especially when he speaks with great humility. He inspires, and that is important. He is believed by his own people, and that is indispensable. Sometimes the credibility of his speech is so powerful it is chilling. When he makes one of his really dry jokes—such as getting instructions from God to clean up his language— many take him literally. When he misspeaks on something or another, his audience thinks he has an insight or a strategy several layers deep and imperceptible to the ordinary mind. Like Reagan, Mr. Duterte communicates so effectively he is able to lead by what he says. Both of them speak in the simplest way, without adornment and without the words of someone else. We are not sure if the sheer spontaneity of his speeches need changing. If it ain’t broke, why fix it? It is the pure spontaneity that gives his words the power they have. That is because people basically trust the man. People see the sincerity. People know what they hear is what they get.

days to hear super poor, super hungry, super president, and almost anything this adjective can fill in. Filipinos think of the United States as the ultimate heaven, a place where one can be improved or the beginning of new life. Any of us want to come over to begin the journey to a beautiful future. Those lucky enough were able to come over and see the light of opportunities. Sad to realize, some of them just mind their old ways and never grab the chances at hand. Some were just lazy while others commit crime and deported back to where darkness defeated their future. In a few hours, the United States of America will elect a new leader. Here

we see how clean and honest the electoral process. The campaign is based on respect among candidates, the people and laws of the land. No sign of vote-buying like in our country, no use of black propaganda and after the election, the rival candidates restore their friendship as if nothing happens. In short the election is clean and honest. If we could only copy the style and ways of electing people, we can perhaps gain ground towards progress, growth and development. I wish our politicians will aspire to adopt the beautiful ways of electing our leaders.

environment, won by only two regional offices in Northern Mindanao, Caridad said. So far, the regional offices of the Land Transportation Office and Department of Budget and Management were the only two regional offices here bestowed with the Red Orchid Awards. Caridad said that Cagayan De Oro City would have a greater chance of getting the DOH Orchid Awards because of an existing ordinance that prohibits smoking in public places. The city anti-smoking law also covers passenger jeepneys and all other public transportation facilities plying in the city. Aside from trophies and certificates, the Red Orchid Awards carry a Php 100,000 worth of medicine to stop smoking and control diseases it might carry to others. Caridad said that in this city, two professional smoking cessation clinics exist – one at the DOH regional office and the other at the Northern Mindanao Medical Center. The clinics assist “smoking addicts” on how to smoothly quit the habit. (PNA)

push through as the New People’s Army objected to it citing environmental factors. Duterte said he will ask the National Democratic Front to reconsider its position against oil palm plantations. “To delay based on something which is not accepted by everybody – to the detriment of government plans to alleviate the standard of living ng tao – somebody should talk to them again maybe this would be one project we can ask about dun sa Oslo because while waiting for the final result ano man yan, kailangan natin we have to improve the lives of the people,” he said. “For as long as there is threat, we cannot do anything. But we will try again and again I will make sure to meet the experts of the world about water and the soil and ask them to explain why it is so,” he said. He said oil palm has not caused environmental destruction in Malaysia. “In Malaysia, it has not lost moisture or water. Kasi sa Agusan del Sur banda, matagal ng oil palm dyan (oil palm has been there for long) and proven to be a good source of revenue, and source of livelihood for the people there,” he said. Duterte added he would consider himself a “failure” if he fails to address poverty at the end of his six-year term. “Kung ang sitwasyon ganito lang (If the situation remains like this), I will consider myself really a total failure, not improving (the lives of the people) a few notches above. One thing for me to do is to, either resign or give it to somebody else, masyadong mabigat ang problema (the problem is so heavy),” he said. (Antonio L. Colina IV/MindaNews) but most of the time you will not be contented, you want to push for more.” The President describes his passion to serve the people which he finds in common with the Trump. Meanwhile, the President said his foreign policy will stay the same as he is not in a habit of reneging with what he said. This includes pushing deeper ties with China and ASEAN countries.
