the provincial government has readied relief goods for the displaced families. “Our relief team that includes doctors and medical workers have been dispatched to Salay to assist the evacuees,” Dy said. He said that each family

would be provided two food packs and a hygiene kit. The fighting between the government troopers and the NPA rebels took place in the hinterland village of Bunal in Salay on Tuesday. Until Wednesday, the running gun battle con-

tinues prompting village residents, mostly farmers, to evacuate to safer grounds in the town proper of Salay for fear of being caught in the crossfire, the local government reported.

Dy said that the PDRRMO is concerned on the health of the children and the villagers who have been reportedly affected by the “traumatic” experience. (PNA)

paign contributions to donors. My immediate reaction: That one I can believe. Why Leni? When I woke up on the morning of May 10, I got this pleasant surprise text message from a friend: “C ong ratu l at ions. Duterte and Robredo won!” With the INC endorsement for Marcos in a closely fought VP race, conventional wisdom pointed to a win by Bongbong over Leni. However, the quick and unofficial count showed otherwise. Whatever the official and final count turns out to be, the reluctant candidate fought a very good fight. It is important to assess whether the candidate demonstrates traits that fit the workplace culture. BEI question solicit real-life experiential responses that promote a way to evaluate skills, knowledge and behaviors versus philosophical views. Behavior Event Interview can be done through this process: 1. Warm-up –putting the applicant at ease and make him/her feel welcomed. Explain to him/her how the

To support these improvements, DepEd needs to implement district-wide policies to create a safe environment for learning, help prepare young children to be ready for school, prepare teachers to carry out high-quality instruction, offer student challenging course work, extend learning time for

students who do not meet challenging standards and share current research on effective school improvement models. Using a schoolwide instructional focus to meet students’ needs means the following: practices in all classrooms that support the instructional focus, classroom setups that support the instructional focus, consistent materials, coherent schedule with few interruptions, resources used strategically to support the instructional focus, all school personnel engaged in instruction, cluster meetings focused on teaching and learning and alignment of school vision with instructional focus. CAMPERS rotate through learning centers spending 30 minutes in each center on reading comprehension, creative writing, reading strategies, phonics/encoding/decoding, pleasure reading and sight words. Working with certified teachers and trained assistants, the campers receive one-on-one and small group instructions that identify deficiencies and build their literacy skills in a failure-free setting. Volunteers work to improve and expand literacy instruction at camp. Reading camp learning centers are based on core content from the existing K-12 curriculum. That’s because emerging research demonstrates what intuition tells us – c o n s c i e nt i o u s n e s s , self control and ability to process before acting are all predictors of

success, both academic and economic. Reading camp facilitators who are teachers themselves create a safe space for learning and growing where children are coached to verbalize their feelings, think before acting, calm themselves when frustrated or angry and assign themselves consequences for negative behaviors. The methods are nonpunitive, allowing campers to take part in their learning, process their emotions in healthy ways and practice new ways of communicating. Reading camps offer summer learning opportunities geared specifically for the needs of struggling elementary school students. Importantly, the program model incorporates self confidence building activities with the literacy learning process, helping campers develop a love of reading and learning.

and better equip themselves and their programs, and to build linkages with related institutions. “This event is relevant and significant, especially to our AB History program, where 15 units are allotted for learning Spanish, as required by the Commission on Higher Education.” Spanish was, in SY 19501951, a subject included in the last two years of high school but was later removed. In higher education, it was compulsory, as a language requirement consisting of twelve units, which in 1957, was increased to 24 units. In later years, it was reduced to 18, then to twelve units, until in 1987, it became optional. Historical and cultural nuances Language training is considered an imperative not just in the national capital but also in the provinces, particularly in Mindanao. At Xavier, Spanish, in particular, is not just an elective course but a requisite for several programs, such as AB History and AB International Studies. Simon Vergara Gutierrez, an American Field Service (AFS) exchange student from Colombia shared interesting stories, personalities and festivals from his home country. During his talk, the 16-year-old foreign student, related similarities between Colombia and the Philippines in terms of climate, culture, values, and religion, among other facets. Spain colonized Colombia in 1525 until 1819 when Simón Bolivar’s movement defeated the Spanish forces at Boyaca. Likewise, the Philippines was a colony of Spain until 1898. Spanish influence on Filipino culture, especially in national and local languages and traditions, persists to this day. Spanish is the primary language of more than 20 countries worldwide. It is estimated that the combined number of Spanish speakers is between 470 and 500 million. It is also the second most natively spoken language in the world and in international communication.
