COTABATO City––Incoming Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Secretary Jesus Dureza on Friday clarified that the Duterte administration will never negotiate with extremist Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) and Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) the way it will negotiate with communist movement and Bangsamoro rebel groups. Dureza issued the state-

ment amid reports quoting him that the incoming Duterte government is open to peace talks with extremist and bandit groups. He said the stance of Aquino government against the ASG and BIFF remains and will be carried over to the next administration. Dureza who flew Friday to Paris en-route to Oslo, Norway for an informal meeting with communist

leader Jose Maria Sison, stressed that he, as peace adviser to President-elect Rodrigo Duterte, will not talk peace with the extremists. The ragtag BIFF was composed of former Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels who broke away in 2008. The government has sealed a peace deal with the MILF. Dureza admitted having

negotiated with the ASG for the safe release of his friend, Canadian tourist John Ridsel. DAVAO City––At least 12 members of the Philippine Women’s College in Davao City elected a new set of board of trustees and a new school president in their annual meeting on Thursday, but the acting president said the meeting was improper and unauthorized. On orders from acting PWC president Conrado Benitez, security guards barred the members from entering the campus. Lawyer Aileen Lizada explained to the guards that the school’s by-laws allows them to hold meetings inside the campus, to no avail, forcing them to hold the meeting and election at the entrance gate. Former senator Helena Benitez serves as chair of PWC, which is registered as a non-stock, non-profit academic institution. PWU-PWC Alumni Foundation of Davao Inc. president Maria Loreto A. Lopez told MindaNews Thursday that Mr. Conrado Benitez wanted to delay the election of the new trustees. “As alumni, away namin kasi we have seen how he mismanaged the school. Dapat OIC (officer-incharge) lang siya in the office of the president. But when he was OIC, sige niya i-extend ang term nya,” she said. She alleged the acting wanted to remain in power and even sought for a twoyear extension of his term, which was supposed to expire three months after he assumed the position in 2013, replacing cousin Amelia Lourdes Benitez-Reyes. Benitez-Reyes was president for 10 years.

“Conrado Benitez, who was appointed officer-incharge in an interim capacity three years ago, has made it clear that he would like to be installed as president of the venerable Davao institution despite several handicaps including his not being Davao-based and PWU’s Board of Trustees deciding otherwise,” a briefer from the Benitez family stated. The 15 members of the institution, nine of them from the Benitez family, wanted the new school president to come from Davao City. Lopez, former school assistant vice president, said Mr. Conrado Benitez is based in Manila and seldom went to Davao and would only come during graduation ceremonies and meetings. She surmised that the acting president was delaying the meeting so that members could not replace him. She said that in a previous meeting, he promised to step down after the board elects a new president. “Conrad does not want it pushed through. He has the feeling that the board will elect another president,” she said. She said the board wondered why Mr. Conrado Benitez was trying to delay the election when there are many qualified nominees for the position. “Pano sya mag-lead if he is are not here. Yung ang experience if Benitez was president, hindi sya dumadating dito. Why, is davao lacking (of a potential president)?” Mr. Conrado Benitez, however, said he had no intent of staying as president but just wanted to make the school more competitive before turning it over to a successor. “I will not stay any longer if we can sort these problems out and make sure that the person we have in Davao is competently capable. I

have no intention of perpetuating myself in power. I am Manila-based and have many other things to do. PWC has become very close to my heart,” he said. Illegitimate members Mr. Conrado Benitez said some members of the Benitez family attended the December 10, 2015 meeting convened by the chair at her residence in Manila which he said was more like a “family caucus”. But the chair was absent during the meeting due to health concerns, he said. He recalled there was a suggestion to increase the number of members while noting that PWC has only three members. Thursday’s meeting was attended by 12 out of 15 members. He contested the legitimacy of the 15 members, who included him and cousin Amelia Lourdes, as PWC members and the names should be treated as nominees. “I did not find out until later that my relatives sent letters (to the nominees) signed by my aunt that they were elected new members. They had the signature of my aunt who was not even there. A lot of them (nominees) accepted,” he said. “To accept that they are members of the corporation is already a fallacy. Hindi pwede yun (That could not be). How can you come up with a set of trustees and officers when the basic principle of calling the meeting was fraud,” he said. On Thursday, PWU president Dr. Francisco Benitez said that they stood their ground and claimed they made sure that they followed proper protocols in calling for a meeting. He said that their school in Davao is already doing good but with the election of new trustees and a new president they are expecting stability in terms of corporate governance. (Antonio L. Integrated History Act awaits PNoy’s signature

SENATOR Sonny Angara has called for the signing into law of a bill that mandates the integration of Filipino-Muslim and indigenous peoples’ history, culture and identity in the study of Philippine history in both basic and higher education in the country. The proposed Integrated History Act, which was recently passed by both houses of Congress, is now awaiting the signature of President Benigno Aquino III. “There is a need to integrate the history, culture and identity studies of Filipino-Muslims and indigenous people in the grand narrative of Philippine history if we want to create an inclusive history that accounts for all Filipinos,” said Angara, principal author of the bill. The measure mandates

concerned agencies of the government to consult recognized experts on FilipinoMuslim and indigenous peoples’ history, culture and identity in the formulation of the curriculum for an inclusive and integrative study of Philippine history, including the writing, printing and publication of textbooks and other reading materials. Angara stressed that one way of effectively instilling further understanding of Filipino-Muslim and indigenous peoples’ history, culture and identity in the minds of the youth is by including such subjects in the education system. “As the country elected its first president from Mindanao, it is high time that we aim for a more inclusive study of our history to foster a culture of peace in the

country,” he added. Meanwhile, the Department of Education (DepEd) in Region 10 has earlier launched the Indigenous Peoples Education curriculum in 40 schools all over the region. Under DepEd Order 32-2015, indigenous culture is embedded in contextualizing the K to 12 curriculum based on their respective educational and social contexts. It was learned that there are nine indigenous tribes in Northern Mindanao. These are the Higaonon, Manobo, Bukidnon, Subanen, Talaandig, Tigwahanon, Umayamnon, Matigsalug and Kamigin. Tamayo echoed the urgent call of Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) Director Theresa Mundita S. Lim on the need to rehabilitate the seas to secure its ability to produce sufficient food supply for the current and future generations. “The people particularly those living along the coastal community shall stop disposing garbage in the seas to prevent further damage to coral reefs and marine life,” Tamayo said. “If we lose them, we will lose our supply of food and other needs,” Lim said. “We need to preserve and restore healthy and productive oceans with rich marine biodiversity,” she added. sued the call as the nation recently celebrated the Month of the Ocean (MOO) last May, with the theme “Biodiversity for Food SeaCUREity” that emphasizes the importance of marine biodiversity to food security. Zambo solon turns over PhP8-M school building projects ZAMBOANGA City -- First District Rep. Celso Lobregat on Friday spearheaded the inauguration and turnover of two school building projects worth Php8 million in two barangays in his district. The school building projects constructed through the initiatives of Lobregat are located in Barangay Recodo and Sitio Salum, Barangay San Roque, located 14.45 and six kilometers west of City Hall, respectively. Barangay Recodo received a two-storey fourclassroom buildings worth Php6 million and Sitio Salum, Barangay San Roque got one-storey three-classroom project worth Php2 million.

The school building projects were constructed through the supervision of the Department of Public Works and Highways’ District Engineering Office. Erwin Badeo, principal of Recodo National High School (RNHS), said the newly-completed school buildings will be utilized to accommodate the Senior High School students of RNHS in time for the opening of classes on June 13. Badeo said the new school buildings will be very substantial and will entail a very conducive learning environment to students who are the first batch of senior high school enrollees in their school.

Ponce Secondary School Teacher III Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School In some circles the subject of discipline often spirals down into people regaling each other with tales of how their parents used to reprimand them, utilizing such colorful language and loud sound effects to describe how harsh their experience (with the belt, mongo beans, or the dreadful slipper) was. This would then be met with boisterous laughter as another person would then interject with his own experience. However, by accepting this practice we seem to identify the act of discipline with punishment. When somebody proclaims that someone needs to be disciplined, most thoughts seem to gravitate towards physical action or temporary suspension of any personal belongings. Discipline, at its very core, is defined as teaching, or instructing. Thus, it is important to think that discipline is not merely analogous to punishment, but is a way of teaching someone to be your disciple. Most parents start with teaching their child to control their behavior, and it is also

here that parents make a common mistake. They view their child’s actions from their own perspective, and scold them, label them as ‘bad’ for something that might had been a harmless accident. Perhaps a father, stressed out from work, might tell his son that he is a ‘bad child’ for accidentally slamming the door, simply because the child is energetic. They label the child ‘bad’ for actions that annoy them, yet is relatively harmless to others. When a child does commit an action that requires discipline, the parent should never chide the child itself, but the act he had committed. It is important to know that there is a difference between telling a child that what he did was ‘bad’ and telling a child that he is ‘bad’. With the end goal in disciplining a child to help him foster a sense of independence and self-government, his self-respect will play a large role in helping him become a proper person, and to tarnish this self-respect will only harm both the parent and the child in the long run.

Meanwhile, employee volunteers of SM Lanang Premier, together with Security and Engineering agency personnel, reached out to the neighboring Ubalde Elementary School. Apart from cleaning and beautifying the school grounds and façade, they made a longstanding contribution by turning over newly built bookshelves to the school library. SM Lanang Premier also previously donated electric fans and educational textbooks to Ubalde Elementary School, which has a population of around 800 students. In the same way, SM City Cagayan de Oro employees, together with SM Lifestyle Entertainment Inc. (SMLEI), Security Agency and Engineering Agency personnel, carried out their “Adopt-a-School” activity at Lumbia Central School. They improved the comfort and convenience of the classrooms through general cleaning and repairing of broken ceilings, doors, and lights and plumbing works in the restrooms. The “Adopt-a-School” activity is under SM Supermalls’ Employee Volunteerism Program, which encourages employees to give back to the community and the less privileged sectors of the society.

Someone said that when we become adults, there comes a time when we have to “get over it.” We have to “let our parents off the hook.” We have to finally stop holding our parents on the hook of our anger, bitterness, and unforgiveness. For your own sake, you must let go of the hurt and forgive your parents, no matter what wrong and painful things they might have done to you in the past. Remember, many times our parents were only doing what had been done to them by their own parents. So God is their fair judge, not you. ALL need God’s forgiveness for our many wrongs and hurts we’ve caused others. Jesus Christ said that we can never make our peace with Him and be forgiven, until we’ve made our peace and forgiven those people who have hurt and wronged us. This includes our parents! So why don’t you ask Jesus to give you His mercy and love, so you can finally reach out to your parents to forgive them, care for them, and honor them for all the good things they did do for you—before they’re gone and it’s too late. The former three-term lawmaker of this city, who holds a doctorate degree in peace and security administration, has submitted last week her credentials to President-elect Rodrigo Duterte expressing her strong desire to head the Department of Tourism. In her letter to Duterte, Plaza, vice president of PDPLaban for Mindanao, cited her rich experience in this field being the chairperson on the Committee on Tourism in the 8th, 9th and 10th Congress where she introduced several significant legislative measures that helped boost the industry. “With my long experience in the tourism industry, I have developed my own vision of what, where and how to improve, change and fully develop this field to attain the overall progress of our people’s lives,” Plaza said. Duterte has yet to name the cabinet post for the Department of Tourism which will be left vacant after Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez will relinquish his post on June 30 when the six-year term of President Aquino ends. Plaza, the widow of the long-time Butuan City mayor Figurado Plaza, has been actively engaged in many initiatives the most significant of which was her being the principal author of Republic Act 7901 or the law creating the Caraga region which significantly

The formal creation of Caraga in 1995 has made a big impact in drawing wide interest from local and foreign tourists on the Balanghai Shrine where centuries-old Balanghai boats were preserved after then President Corazon Aquino declared it a National Cultural Treasure in March 9, 1987. The shrine, located in Barangay Masao about five kilometers from the city, is believed to be where Magellan landed and first set foot in the Philippines. “Being well-travelled worldwide, I have seen how tourist destinations were fully developed and progressed in many countries and I am morally charged to heed a shared responsibility to serve my abilities for the betterment of our country through tourism industry,” noted Plaza in her letter to Duterte. Already, Plaza has laid down some outlook that would best suit an ideal tourism secretary among them were creativity, artistic sense, resourcefulness and entrepreneurial ability to economic, political and social reforms of the country. She said her long stint in legislative work would give her an advantage to lobby for budget support and other resources needed for the much-needed promotion of the tourism industry. President Darlene Arguelles expressed confidence that Hedcor will be able to “deliver as promised” ZANECO’s needed power supply once its 68.8-MW run-of-river power plant goes online in 2017. Hedcor is now constructing, to the tune of Php12.5 billion, two cascading plants in Manolo Fortich, home of the first pineapple plantation in the Far East. Groundbreaking ceremony for the 43.4-MW Manolo Fortich Hydro 1 and the 25.4-MW Manolo Fortich Hydro 2 was held on April 22, 2015. Together, the Manolo Fortich plants will generate of total of 360 gigawatt hour (GWh) of electricity every year. “We praise the zealousness of ZANECO in ensuring they get renewable energy to meet the needs of their growing franchise area,” Arguelles said. With ZANECO’s example, Hedcor is “looking forward to serve other electric cooperative as they strive to push renewable energy into their portfolios,” she added. Hedcor’s power plants at present produce around 185 MWs of “Cleanergy”, the AboitizPower’s brand of clean and renewable energy. The company hopes that electric cooperatives will take advantage of hydropower to create a balanced portfolio of energy sources. Its Manolo Fortich plant, so far its largest project in Mindanao, is Hedcor’s show of commitment to sustain the growth of the island. “We are here not only to support the growth of Mindanao economically, but also sustainably,” said AboitizPower First Vice President Rochell Donato Gloria. SM employees adopt schools, support Brigada Eskwela On June 4, 2016, SM employees across Mindanao region came out in full force to participate in “Adopt-aSchool,” an Employee Volunteerism Program (EVP) aimed at benefiting public elementary schools. The said activity was held in support of the Department of Education’s Brigada Eskwela, which ensures that school facilities are ready for the opening of classes. Sharing their time, efforts and resources, employee volunteers from SM City General Santos, SM City Davao, SM Lanang Premier, and SM City Cagayan de Oro spearheaded a simultane-

ous clean-up, maintenance and repair work of school facilities. In SM City General Santos, employee volunteers repainted some of the classrooms and the stage of Balite Elementary School. They also donated cleaning materials and first aid kits for the students and teachers. Balite Elementary School has produced a Valedictorian graduate of batch 1999, Rose Fatima Manlangit, who is now working as a Building Administration Officer of SM City GenSan. “I am privileged to have been given a chance to go back here and serve my
