Davao coastline development at P100 billion

AVAO CITY – The total investment on two coastline projects here would reach a total P100 billion, said the city’s investment office.

Ivan Cortez, chief of the Davao City Investment and Promotions Center (DCIPC), said the 200-hectare reclamation project of Mega Harbour is at P33 billion while Malaysian Mercury Group already have funds for its P67 billion project in Isla Verde.

“Mega Harbour is a port development, commercial and tourism project and also with a prime residential area along the bay,” said Cortez.

Cortez said that Isla Verde, would be “a commercial area with four to five storey tenements.”

Isla Verde is a 76-hectare coastal community of the Sama Dilaut (Badjao) indigenous group in Barangay 23-C recently razed by fire.

Cortez said that the Isla Verde project costs more as “you would have to relocate settlers.”

“As t he y (investor) would build tenements spaces are saved as it is a

sprawling type setting, the free spaces can be utilized for commercial areas,” he said.

Cortez said the tenement structure was designed “so that at least we can improve our frontage, at least people can see that there is a beach there as we (popularly) call it boulevard.” “(If you travel) from Pearl Farm to Davao City, you can only see squatters.

He said 20 percent of the total reclaimed area of Mega Harbour “can be utilized for government operation” and they have yet to hear from another investor who wish to build a “government center” in the area.(davaotoday.com)

He also urged the rebels not to harm the soldiers who guard the studentathletes.

Duterte said fighting might resume until the time when the peace negotiations between the government and the rebels.

He also lauded Davao del Norte for hosting the Palarong Pambansa 2015.

Duterte said nothing beats Davao del Norte for hosting the national games knowing Governor Rodolfo Del Rosario’s expertise in management, having been involved in banana and car-industries in the past.

Duterte said Governor Del Rosario is indeed an entrepreneur.

Mayor Duterte calls on rebels to halt atrocities during Palarong Pambansa

TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte - Mayor Duterte called on the communist rebels to conduct atrocities somewhere else and not in Davao Region where the Palarong Pambansa 2015 is going on.

He underscored that he does not want the athletes

to get scared.

Duterte said the region tries to project an image worldwide that despite the insurgency problem, government and rebels can talk about order.

“Do your struggle somewhere else, and not in Davao Region where the games are going on,” mayor said.

The European migration tragedy Since months, we all can witness the refugee tragedies. Just several hours ago, authorities say they have recovered ten bodies during rescue operations in the Mediterranean Sea, off the Libyan coast. Smugglers took advantage of calm seas to send boats crowded with refugees across the water.

Officials came to the aid of at least 16 boats packed full of migrants, after people smugglers took advantage of calm seas to send several overcrowded vessels across the Mediterranean Sea. A tug and a merchant ship also helped in the efforts.

The bodies were found in three separate operations, with Italian news agency “Ansa” reporting seven were found on board two dinghies, while three people died when they jumped into the sea, and attempted to swim to a nearby trawler.

Italy, the most burdened European country, said it coordinated the rescue of more than 2,150 migrants on Sunday after announcing 3,427 had been saved earlier in the weekend.

Boats carrying another 220 migrants were accompa-

nied by naval vessels to the Italian island of Lampedusa.

The Italian coast guard reported on Sunday evening that more than 5,800 migrants had been rescued throughout the weekend.

Separately, the Greek Coast Guard said it had rescued another 530.It comes a day after almost 3,700 migrants were rescued from smugglers’ boats, most of whom are still in the process of being transferred to Italian ports. It is one of the highest numbers of people ever rescued in a single day.

My dear readers, allow me to confront you with more dramatic figures: More than 1,200 people died last month attempting to make the treacherous sea crossing to Italy’s shores, with most setting out from Libya.The bulk of migrants making the trip come from countries with ongoing civil unrest, such as Syria, Somalia and Afghanistan.

Yes, indeed the crisis has placed pressure on EU leaders, with some now seeking approval from the United Nations Security Council to launch military action targeting smugglers

The fall of Bessang Pass on June 14, 1945 opened the backdoor to General Yamashita’s last stronghold in Kiangan, Ifugao. At this closing stage of the war, Filipino troops now enjoyed the advantage, thanks to the tons of guns, ammunition, communication equipment and other war supplies unloaded by two US submarines months earlier.

Still, the last few battles would not be easy for the Filipino fighters. The Japanese were still capable of launching Banzai charges, the equivalent of the Kamikaze suicidal attacks in naval warfare.

CAGAYAN de Oro City-Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Saturday has expressed optimism that the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) will soften its stance in regard to the various changes in the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) as it sails through both the Upper and Lower Houses.

Speaking during the annual conference of Rotary International District 3870 at the Pryce Plaza Hotel, Marcos said that over the months, the MILF had softened up from its hardline stance to pursue the original BBL draft being put forward

by Malacanang.

“Everybody wants peace.

We in Congress want peace.

The MILF wants peace. In order for all of these to work, we must agree at some point to all the terms in the final

BBL draft,” Marcos said.

Marcos, head of the Senate committee deliberating the proposed BBL law, is trying to beat the May 25 self-imposed deadline to craft the final provisions and present it to the Senate plenary.

“It’s taxing on my part.

I’m the only one in the Senate holding the deliberations, collating all the proposals and position papers of various sectors nationwide. While they in the Lower House, they have 75 congressmen attending to the proposed BBL draft,” he said.

Marcos also admitted that various sectors are asking to change several provisions in the Malacanangdrafted proposal which was lobbied by the MILF. “As of now, they in Malacanang and the MILF are the only ones who totally agree with the original draft. The rest of the country has their

own proposed revisions and we as legislators have the duty to listen to our constituents. We in the Senate are not against BBL. We just have to hear out the people,” Marcos said.

“This is consistent with my official mandate and a personal mission to pass a BBL that is not only thoroughly and conscientiously studied, but also one that is capable of successfully ending our quest for a just and lasting peace, stability and development in Muslim Mindanao,” he added.

Marcos also credited the 137-person Citizens Peace Council for helping his committee in meeting the May 25 deadline by helping out in the deliberations and collating all the recommendations. Books for ARMM to benefit 300 libraries, 32 schools

ULU – The Australian Government through its Basic Education Assistance for Muslim Mindanao (BEAM-ARMM) Program distributed at least P117 million worth of brand new books to select schools in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) in an effort to upgrade the region’s school libraries.

Atty. Jamar Kulayan, ARMM’s Education Secretary, said the books are donated by the Brother’s Brother Foundation and the Rotary Club of Makati (RCM) to the Learning Improvement through Book Reading Opportunities or LIBRO Para sa Batang Bangsamoro Project, a book donation drive spearheaded by the department and the BEAM-ARMM Program.

BBF is a US-b as e d foundation that focuses on medical and educational needs of children around the world and works with RCM on various charity work in the Philippines.

The books were shipped straight from the warehouse

of McGraw Hill and other major publishers in the United States to Zamboanga and Cotabato City just recently.

Kulayan said that more than 300 school libraries, including 32 madaris or Islamic schools across ARMM will receive new math, science, and English books from the LIBRO Project.

He a d d e d t h at t h e BEAM-ARMM Program also allotted P15 million for minor repairs and refurbishing of school libraries and reading centers in the region.

“This is a huge and ambitious project. But DepEdARMM is confident that with the help of the Australian Government, thousands of our schoolchildren will get access to libraries that offer quality reading and reference materials,” said Kulayan.

Kulayan noted that reading is key to increasing the learning outcomes of schoolchildren, especially in ARMM where access to learning materials such as

“Lack of access to learning materials hamper the learning of our schoolchildren,” he said, adding, that through reading, “we are teaching them the process of critical thinking, which allows them to make better choices.”

“When we accomplish the task of teaching our children to think rationally and to make better choices, we can already solve more than half of our peace and order problems in the region,” Kulayan said.

The Australian Government-funded BEAM-

ARMM Program aims to contribute to the alleviation of poverty in ARMM and, in the longer term, to the emergence of sustainable peace in the region through closely-targeted investments in early childhood and basic education as well as skills training of out-ofschool youth and senior high school students.

Aside from beefing up the region’s school libraries, the Australian Government helps DepEd-ARMM implement the Enhanced Basic Education Curriculum or K to 12 Program through supplemental training of elementary, high school,

and madrasah teachers and administrators on core subjects such as math, science, and English.

The Australian Government also constructs and rehabilitates classroom buildings, promotes and delivers school health and sanitation facilities, increases the chances of out-of-school youth and senior high school students in landing decent jobs through skills development and training, and provides alternative delivery model of basic education in remote and conflict-affected areas of ARMM. ‘Pinoy Aquaman’ to cross 16-km Sarangani channel on Sunday

URIGAO CITY — Triathlete-lawyer Ingemar P. Macarine will attempt another first in swimming history on Sunday: cross a 16-kilometer channel in Sarangani Bay.

The “Pinoy Aquaman” said he will swim from Kamanga in Maasim town to Tango in Glan, one of the bay's narrowest points.

Macarine, 38, president of Surigao Runners Club, felt confident he can achieve the feat of being the first person to cross the bay.

“I trained hard for this,” adding he had to immerse in the pool for three hours every practice that happened thrice a week.

Macarine’s swim on Sunday would be his 12th in open water swim and sixth in marathon swimming.

“I’m quite excited, hop-

ing for the best performance this Sunday,” he told MindaNews on Friday.

The Surigao-born and raised former varsity swimmer of Silliman University said he ended his tapper training early morning Friday.

Like his previous feats, Macarine’s swim on Sunday is part of his lifetime advocacy for clean seas, environmental tourism, and climate change awareness.

Every year, Sarangani Bay hosts the longest open water five-man relay swimming competition in the country.

The Swim-across-theBay competition is a brainchild of former Sarangani provincial agriculture chief and marine biologist Giuseppe Chew who now lives abroad.

Chew told Macarine that no one has dared to cross the Saranggani Bay by swimming solo.

Chew said Sarangani Bay, the deepest bay in the Philippines can possibly be conquered with human prowess. He added the bay was mentioned in Pigafetta’s epic journal of Magellan's expedition.

Macarine said he never encountered a shark in all his previous open water outings.

He was hoping for a good weather on Sunday even if typhoon Dodong had entered the Philippine

Area of Responsibility on Thursday.

He said that aside from the bad weather, strong currents might affect his swim.

“I was told that the current in the area is strong,” Macarine said.

On Saturday, Macarine and Edwin Dela Cruz, his navigator, will study the current in the bay.

Sarangani Governor Steve Chiongbian Solon said the provincial government is now planning activities that will promote environmental protection.

Department of Education endeavours to train students to be socially responsible and practice environmental awareness. This is the reason why a lot of activities are being held in participation of the schools and in partnership of Department of Environmental and Natural Resources.

The creation of Youth for Environment in Schools Organization (YES-O) is one of the initiatives.

It is an organization compose of students, aimed to wake the awareness and initiative of the people to develop and help the threat of further damage on the environ-

ment. In its flagship event held annually, the YES-O Division Camp, students are given environmental updates and also briefing on disaster preparedness.

This camp also served as a program to promote the awareness of the condition of the environment. It put into realization the embodied students’ role in preserving the mother nature.

The youth is a group of people who will take charge of the next generation. Thus, it is very important that at the young age, they will be taught to show utmost importance to the environment by being participative to activities that promote environmental conservation and preservation.
