Blame power crisis to supply not ECs, says lawmaker REPRESENTATIVE Edgardo “ERM” Rama Masongsong of the 1st Consumers Alliance for Rural Energy, Inc. (1-CARE) Party-List expressed his disappointment over the blame game directed to Electric Cooperatives (ECs) for the worsening power shortage in Mindanao. In an ambush interview in Bohol, President Benigno Aquino III blamed the ECs in Mindanao for being too slow in availing of the modular gensets, which

was launched in July of last year, making them a scapegoat for the lack of power source since the power crisis started to worsen in 2010 in the region. “I understand the frustration of the President but it is very unfortunate that the power crisis in Mindanao has now been reduced to a circus of blame game, which is neither helpful nor reflective of the real situation. I could only assume that he has not been made aware of the true situation by the

people responsible in solving the lack of power supply in Mindanao, including the implementation of the modular gensets program,” said Masongsong. The Mindanao Modular Generator Sets (Gensets) Program was launched in July 12, 2013 by virtue of Executive Order No. 137 with a funding of Php 4.5 billion from the Malampaya Fund as a stop-gap measure to provide the much-need additional power supply in Mindanao.

He said: “In as much as we appreciate the government’s efforts to mitigate the effects of the worsening problem of power shortage, we are yet to see the positive results in the implementation of the modular gensets program.” “Gensets are not given free and use expensive fuel.
