CAGAYAN de Oro City welcomed the ISUZU DMAX 4x4 Drive Series leg, here, exposing its toughness and encompassing off-road aggressiveness yet with levels of safety and efficiency through the simulated extreme off-road terrains, at the Pueblo Business Park from June 6-8, 2014.

“The pupose of this activity is to highlight the off-road capacity of the Isuzu D-Max and other features that will help you drive anywhere in the Philippines,” according to Mr. Joseph Bautista, head of the Field Division, Isuzu Philippines Corp.

“At the same time, we take this as an opportunity to teach the proper way of driving 4x4,” Bautista said.

Isuzu’s durability and fuel efficiency strives ahead

- whether it’s hauling loads or merely cruising or going to extreme off-roads - Isuzu D-Max pickup is one vehicle you can depend on, said Bautista.

Hence, putting it to the test, a drive series with simulation extreme off-road tracks have been designed to challenge D-Max 4x4 pickups in five destinations in the country.

“We started in Pampanga, then we moved to Cebu, then Bacolod weeks ago; this time in Cagayan de Oro and the last leg will be in Davao from June 20 to 22,” Bautista said.

This year’s CDO-leg of the Isuzu D-Max 4x4 Drive Series has given Kagayanons three days to try the challenge to a specially configured off-road track, where they experienced the remarkable all-terrain driving performance of Isuzu’s highly popular

pickup model.

Designed to bolster the growth of the fourwheel-drive pickup sector in the country, as well as to serve the rapidly increasing popularity of outdoor recreational activities among Filipinos, the off-road activity drew the attention of Kagay-anons, most especially pickup and off-road enthusiasts.

The staging of the maiden-run of the drive challenge, which followed the opening program, Friday, kicked-off with no less than City Mayor Oscar Moreno and Isuzu Philippines President, Mr. Nobuo Izumina, and other top Isuzu officials, as riders themselves.

“The track challenge is also a way of experiencing how to tackle various off-road driving exercises and teach drivers to easily learn many techniques re-

quired in maximizing the advantages afforded by four-wheel drive vehicles,” Bautista explained.

This knowledge is particularly relevant to those living or staying in the rural areas, particularly in locations characterized by rugged roads, rolling hills and narrow stretches, as well as those in the urban flatlands with unpaved terrains, said Bautista.

“Whenever we have events in Mindanao, we always include Cagayan de Oro City, because wherever corners I turn to, there is always one Isuzu cruising through,” Mr. Izumina said in his speech at the opening of the CDO-leg drive series.

Izumina said the performance of CDO to the over-all sales of the Isuzu D-Max since its first launch here is remarkable.

He believes that the local landscape is a contribut-

ing factor, because ISUZU D-Max easily fits into the needs here.

The CDO-leg of the Isuzu D-Max 4x4 Drive Series obstacles included hill climb, hill climb with a stall midway up; lateral climb mount; tackling trail ruts; camber right and camber left sides up; 49-degree traversing; lateral descent ditch crossing; driving over cross axle articulation rails,

among others.

Off-road expert drivers were on hand to teach participants the techniques needed to take on the trail.

Isuzu has a total of 21 branches all over the Philippines, Bautista said, and CDO is one of its strongest pickup sales with an increase sale of 79 percent for the first four months of this year, as compared to last year’s.

CAGAYAN de Oro City––A throng of thousands of people in this seaport capital of Northern Mindanao joined the tree planting activities on Thursday as the country celebrates the month of June as “World Environment Month/ Day,” an environment official said on Friday.

in the planting of about 5,000 mangrove seedlings in the coastal village of Taytay in El Salvador City on the Western coast of Misamis Oriental.

Tawan-Tawan said that the World Environment Day is the most important day of the year because it is a worldwide awareness of the shared responsibility of taking care of mother earth and all of us being agents of positive change.

Global warming is causing ocean levels to rise at an increasing rate. When global temperature rises, water expands and occupies more space.

Ice melts which also contributes to rise of sea level. A study released by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) revealed that the global sea levels had risen from 10 to 25cm over the last 100 years. As the temperature heats up, extreme weather events, such as heat waves, floods, droughts, tropical cyclones, and hurricanes become more frequent and severe, Tawan-Tawan said.

She said that DENR region 10, in cooperation with the People’s Organization, Indigenous People, Academe, local government units (LGU), other government agencies and stakeholders reforested 46,395 hectares from 2011 to 2013.

The DENR is also focusing on the country’s coastal areas as the depletion of the 500,000 hectares mangrove forest due to coastal development, land conversion, and reclamation, Tawan-Tawan said.

She said that, more or less, only about 100,000 hectares mangrove forests are visible today and the mangrove in the coastal village of Taytay in El Salvador is among these mangrove forests that has remained visible today.

There is an urgent need to protect the mangroves since these coastal forests protect the people and communities who are living along the coastlines as buffer shields during typhoons and storm surges.

The mangrove forest also serves as the nursery ground for fish, prawns, and crabs aside from supporting the production of fish in coastal waters, Tawan-Tawan said.

She said that the celebration of the World Environment Month/Day is a call for solidarity in mitigating climate change where the positive action of every person would contribute in the world’s struggle against climate change and the sustainable preservation of the world environment.CD with ERCEL MAANDIG

Simple ways to encourage student attention in the classroom

Teaching students especially in grade school is a challenging task. It takes a lot of strategies and techniques for them to absorb the lessons in effective way. The following are some tidbits of simple ways in order for a teacher to gain attention from the pupils.

First is the use of colorful materials.

These materials include flash cards and visual aids blended in light colors such as red, yellow, orange and green, among others. These colors are the common ones that basically attract the eyes of the pupils and their attention to learn simple and basic topics. It could also be effective if the teacher will use it even on the first days of classes. In this way, pupils will look forward to the more classes with that teacher.

Giving rewards to pupils are also found effective. Each outstanding student is normally being rewarded by school after a school year and during recognition day.

However, a teacher can do this in her class.

It could be on daily like during recitations.

It could also be monthly, like posting “Outstanding Pupil of the Month” or the like.

This stategy could not only gain attention but as well confidence among pupils.

Classroom decorations are also enticing.

Classroom is the residence of each pupil during class hours. He even stay there longer than his own home, for he use eight hours of his time in classrooms. Thus, it is proper that a teacher will organize the classroom the way that it could be a home to pupils, a room that he is excited to go home to. Teacher could put colorful bulletin boards and pin boards and also make use of colorful curtains, for an instance.

Learning is comprehensive. Teaching also is. Therefore, teaching strategies should not just cornered in books but also in the learning surroundings where pupils are exposed to.

As the annual tournament of the Women’s Golf Association of the Philippines (WGAP) comes to a close, the battle between the ladies of Villamor and Del Monte for the second rank has been intense.

Harmie Constantino and Chanelle Avaricio led the Pasaybased team to a two-point win (574 pts) against the home favourite Del Monte group (572 pts) with Pamela Mariano and Rainstar Roque heading the pack.

First day of classes open smoothly in Misamis Occidental OROQUIETA CITY, Misamis Occidental – So far, the first day of classes in Misamis Occidental on June 2, 2014, was smooth and productive.

Classes were conducted in all schools and attendance was impressive.

This was the assessment of Dr. Jonathan S. Dela Pe?a, Schools Division Superintendent of the Department of Education (DepEd), of

the province, who said “We ensured that Lesson 1 was delivered on the first day of School Year (SY) 2014-2015.”

Dela Peña said SY 20142015 has a total of 201 days which ends on March 27, 2015 or 53 schools days, each, for the first and second quarters, 55 school days in the third quarter and 40 school days in the fourth and last quarter.

Meanwhile, the following regular holidays will be observed by DepEd within the year: Philippine Independence Day, June 12, National Heroes Day, Aug. 25, Bonifacio Day, Nov. 30, and Rizal Day, Dec, 30.

Eidul Fitr and Eid’l Adha, tentatively set on July 22 and Oct. 5, respectively, are also regular holidays, but Ninoy Aquino Day, Aug. 21 and All Saints Day, Nov.

QUEZON, Bukidnon — For people who like to smell wood blossoms in the cool fresh mountain air while plunging in a gently flowing cool blue waters, or go caving (spelunking) this summer, Blue Water Cave is one perfect place to go.

Quezon town mayor Gregorio Gue said the local government and Kiokong Climbing Society—a nonprofit group—developed the Kiokong Eco-Tourism project to oversee town visitors’ activities while trekking and spelunking especially during weekends.

“Visitors should clean their own mess and keep back the trash with them to preserve the cleanliness of the place,” he said.

The hidden paradise of Southern Bukidnon A natural tourist attraction hidden in the country view of San Jose village in Quezon, Bukidnon, Blue Water Cave River flows underground in connecting caverns, which is blue in color all year round.

The trail to the blue waters includes a scenic view of white rock cliff walls, where hikers and rock wall climbers pulled themselves up a steep rock face surrounded with amazing rock formations, rolling hills and mountains.

Take hikes, take photos, breath the fresh air deeply, and notice the amazing animals from flying lemurs to species of birds soaring

up high.

How to get there The entrance is along the national highway with a huge billboard describing at a glance what this municipality offers. Quezon Municipality is said to be Mindanao’s sugar capital located in southern Bukidnon. It is four to five hours away from Cagayan de Oro and three to four hours from Davao City.

Visitors can get in touch with Kiokong Eco Tourism days before the actual visit for food and transportation tips.

Exploring the Blue Water Cave A narrow trail leading the Blue Water Cave is clearly visible and no guide is required to reach it.

It is an easy way towards the paradise, until a steep way downwards approaches to finally reach the riverbank of Pulangi River and see the wonderful cave.

The cool, semi-deep, pure blue water meets the Pulangi waters, and leaves a bluish area before mixing with waters of the giant Pulangi River.

The cave’s opening is small. At the bottom, cool and clear water accumulated. It is freezing cold and very refreshing.

White Rock Wall Climbing Following the trail back is also the route for the White Rock Wall Climbing.

There are fixed pitons

(mountaineering device) going up the White Rock Wall. These are like pegs hammered into rocks with hooks where the mountaineer attaches karabiners.

Karabiners are metal loops used as connectors to safely hold a freely running rope.

The Kiokong Climbing Society facilitators always check the safety gears. They demonstrate how to pull ropes up and how to rappel down.

They said a “beginner” usually goes for up to 30 feet but for advanced climbers, facilitators can offer the 30-meter climb.

Bukidnon’s Blue Water Cave —A hidden paradise

MARAWI CITY, Lanao del Sur - More than P2 billion worth of development projects is being implemented by the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) to help foster peace and reduce poverty in some of the conflict-affected communities in the region through the Payapa at Masaganang Pamayanan (Pamana) program.

Dong Anayatin, PAMANA-ARMM prog r a m m a n a g e r, s a i d PAMANA is intended to contribute to lasting peace in the region through poverty reduction and the improvement of local governance.

He said PAMANA also promotes social cohesion to capacitate residents in conflict-stricken areas.

The program includes livelihood projects being provided by the region’s Department of S ocial Welfare and Development (DSWD) in at least 386 barangays and construction of roads and inf rast r uc tures b eing undertaken by ARMM’s Department of Public Works and Hig hways (DPWH).

The ARMM govern-

me nt , Anay at i n s ai d, is hoping to increas e livelihood and job opportunities in the region and intensify community participation in the pursuit of peace and development.

The program was initially handled directly by the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) when it was first introduced in the ARMM in 2011.

Last year, the ARMM government officially took over the management of PAMANA projects that are being implemented in the region.

“We regularly conduct focus group discussions with local leaders and the program’s steering committee to assess the needs of recipient communities,” said Anayatin.

PAMANA projects are being implemented in mostly Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) communities.

Aquino has not abolished congressional pork and has defended his own Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP). Aquino has retained a trillion peso pork fund and has covered up kickbacks amasses thru anomalous Public Private Partnership deals like the MRT train bribe try.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY-A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) is needed by and between the city government and concerned agencies for the implementation of priority projects here, said City Councilor Prexy Elipe on Friday.

Most of these priority projects are listed as the Poverty Reduction Projects under the Bottom Up Budgeting (BUB) that involves various government line agencies, Elipe said.

Elipe, Chair of the City Council’s Committee on Finance and Ways and Means, said that his committee has not received a copy of the MOA under the BUB projects.

Among the government agencies involved in the BUB projects are the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG)

and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

He said that the Committee on Finance has already requested the concerned government agencies to submit the MOA for the city council to enact an appropriate legislation.“Until now there has been no MOA from the different line agencies,” Elipe said.

However, the council committee has requested the Local Finance Committee

(LFC) to source out funds for the city’s counterpart in the implementation of these priority projects.

The BUB projects include the Bigasan sa Barangay under the DOLE, school repairs, Gulayan sa Paaralan and Innovative Program for street children of the DeEd, farm to market roads and food terminal to be implemented by the DA and water system and livelihood programs under the DSWD. (PNA)

Asian underwater cable to boost Mindanao ICT

DAVAO CITY -- Global telecom firms in the East Asian Growth Area (EAGA) are planning to lay a submarine cable next year connecting Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, according to Atty. Sam Matanog, chairman of the ICT industry and the ICT Davao Association.

Matanog said the whole island of Mindanao will benefit from the telcom submarine cable project since this will connect Brunei to Mindanao directly and later linked to Guam (USA) in the Pacific which connects to the US mainland.

Top of f icials of the BIMP-EAGA have long recognized this problem and had been meeting

regularly to finalize several linkages and infrastructure projects between the four Asian countries, according to Matanog.

Internet ser vices at almost all internet cafes in this city and elsewhere in Mindanao were found to be the “slowest in Southeast

Asia” according to an unnamed ICT volunteer from Netherlands who made a survey of selected internet cafes here.

“Internet ser vice in this city, especially among the internet cafes, is the slowest in southeast Asia--it took a Dutch volunteer

to tell us this. The good news is, BIMP-EAGA is doing something about it,” Matanog said.

The average megabytes per second (mbps) of the internet ser vice among cafes here is 3.7 mbps while the average internet speed in Manila is around 7 mbps whose speed is still slower than other Asian countries like China, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, etc., according to Matanog. “ We’re h opi n g t h i s EAGA submarine telecom cable will change all this and Mindanao will have faster internet,” Matanog said.

The ICT cluster chair added that in the Netherlands, internet speed is 500 times faster than here in the Philippines. (PNA)

PCCI sets Mindanao Business Confab roadshow in Zambo City ZAMBOANGA CITY -The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI)-Western Mindanao chapter is inviting businessmen, government officials, members of the academe, and the media to participate in the upcoming roadshow for the 23rd Mindanao Business Conference (MINBIZCON).

Paje involving the estero community, private entities, academe, local government units (LGUs) and other stakeholders. The program sought to provide an integrated undertaking to curb flooding due to clogged esteros.

Balangasan Punong Barangay Maphilindo Obaob said the barangay officials have been actively supporting the government efforts in conserving and protecting the environment particularly the rivers, which are considered “the critical natural resource worldwide.”

“We have deep commitments to cleaning our rivers to prevent them from getting polluted. We need to preserve this valuable resource by preserving it,” Obaob explained.

Obaob recalled that decades ago, people who were living beside the creek washed their clothes in the rivers and their children were used also to taking a bath in the rivers. “But now we seldom see them because piles of garbage were thrown into the rivers, he said.”

80% in Davao agree with speed limits

DAVAO CITY - Nearly 8 in 10 Davaoeños agree with the overall intent of the driving speed limit ordinance although the approval varies depending on the imposed limits, a study by the University of Mindanao's Institute of Popular Opinion (IPO) revealed.

The study surveyed 1,200 respondents across the city’s three congressional districts from May 16-24 this year, with 936 people agreeing and 170 others not agreeing with the ordinance.

The respondents' reasons for agreeing with the executive order range from safety to discipline.

However, the IPO added that the respondents noted the law was “interestingly irregular” and “different from national law.”

The city imposed speed limits of 30, 40 and 60 kilometers per hour depending on the location and nature of the city's streets late last year through an executive order signed by Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte.

The survey said that majority of Davaoeños expressed the limits imposed by the ordinance to be within “the right speed,” with 80% of them saying the 40-kph speed limit in some of the city's longer roads were the “justified maximum acceleration.”

The figure, however, dropped when it comes to the 30 kph speed limit with only 75% of those surveyed agreeing with it while 19% wanted it increased. On the 60 kph limit, 77% of the respondents gave their

approval and 17% wanted it increased.

Regarding the city's highest speed limit, 60 kph, only four percent wanted the limit reduced.

As to the penalties, 583 or 62% of the respondents said the fines are commensurate to the violation.

Only 82 of the respondents, or 9%, said the penalty has to be reduced.

“Executive Order No. 39 … has drawn diverse reactions from the riding public since it was implemented six months ago,” the IPO said in a statement.

The survey also noted several perceived drawbacks of the EO. Of the 170 respondents who disagreed with the ordinance, 36% or 61 respondents said the EO lengthened their travel time to their workplace. Others claimed that it caused traffic gridlock and affected the economy.

Overall, 74% of the respondents believed that the speed limits were satisfactory. Only one percent of the respondents, or 12 people, said they were not satisfied with the limits.

Duterte has been adamant in keeping the current speed limits after hearing reports of children facing speeding public utility jeeps daily even when they are crossing pedestrian lanes.

AVAO CITY – Mayor Rodrigo Duterte wants strict supervision of the police on the operation of the civilian “auxiliary police” to counter akyat bahay (burglars) to avoid abuse and “colored partisan politics.”

“Ayaw ko yung mga bata (political patrons) ng mga barangay captain at yung mga kumpare. I will not allow them in the auxiliary force. Mahirap yan, gamitin ang pulitika (I do not want political patrons of barangay captain in the auxiliary force.

It would be difficult if politics comes in),” said Duterte in a command conference with police

Duterte said the “auxiliary police” are to be distinguished from barangay tanods (watchmen) who “will always follow the barangay captain.”

H o w e v e r, D u t e r t e also said the police commanders should “endeavor to talk to barangay captains”as it is a “community endeavor.”

“Because they will be bringing guns, they will always be under the supervision and control of station commanders all over the city,” said Duterte adding that having a gun “changes a person’s psyche.”

He reminded the police officers that the auxiliary police should only bring shotguns issued to them. “A shotgun is easily monitored and it should be returned after their respective duties,” he said.

As regard the role of barangay captains, Duterte said they should function like a mayor who can “set a direction” but should not “meddle into operations.”

Duterte said the general complaints of residents

in the city remains to be burglary affecting mostly middle class residential areas.

“Overall we’re better off with other cities in terms of controlling drugs, kidnapping and the crime index is minimal,”said Duterte.

Duter te told p olice commanders to “draw-up something” as the city has provided them with logistics and communications support. “First is you have to go around you area and find vulnerabilities,” he said suggesting that the police can even borrow the helicopter he is using to look at their respective areas of responsibility. The National Statistics Office showed that outbound shipments of garments were valued at $1.57 billion in 2012, 17.03% lower than in 2011 while textile exports also went down by 7.26% year-on-year to $170.36 million in 2012, the resolution said.

It said that the revenues for the garment industry started to decline following the lifting of the country’s export quota of garments to the US and China, which opened its economy for international trade and other countries like Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Bangladesh offered lower prices compared to local firms; Robert Young, the President of the Foreign Buyers Association of the Philippines (FOBAP) has reported that the textile industry lost about 300,000 to 500,000 jobs in the past six years in the garment sector alone.

Young said that the FOBAP now seeks funding support from the government to revive the country’s garment industry in a bid to regain one-fourth of the lost employment of around 150,000 to 200,000 jobs.

He said that the government support is needed in order to implement projects to revive the garment industry, including mapping garments and hard goods sectors, and compliance program.
