Minors rob P100,000 cash intended for Yolanda victims

SAN Francisco, Agusan del Sur––More than P100,000 in cash intended to be donated to victims of “Supertyphoon Yolanda” (international name Haiyan) had been taken by burglars, who broke into the convent of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church here, the parish priest said on Friday.

Father Artemio Jusayan said the robbery took place and was reported to the police on Thursday.

Jusayan said he discovered the burglary when he found shards of broken glass in front of the church’s cashier and finance office as he was walking on the convent’s premises around 6:30 p.m.

When he checked the windows, Jusayan said he saw that it had been broken.

Upon further checking, he said he discovered that the money intended for Yolanda victims was already missing.

Uy approves of FDC power plant

CAGAYAN de Oro City–– Mayor Julio Uy of Villanueva, Misamis Oriental, said the construction of a coal-fired power plant at the Phividec industrial zone has the full support of the local government unit.

Uy said they made sure the FDC Misamis, owner of the power plant, followed

the proper process and did not violate any laws.

He belied reports from Sulog, an umbrella organization of environmentalists, that the approval of the firm’s environmental compliance certificate was illegal due to absence of public consultations.

“This is not true,” Uy said.

He said FDC had conducted a series of public

consultations in Villanueva since last year.

“That is why the municipal government gave its favorable endorsement to the project,” he said.

Sulog led environmentalists on Wednesday morning in a protest rally against the power plant held outside the regional office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Cagayan de Oro City.

Uy lauded the entry of

another investor saying this will redound to economic growth as jobs will be given to the residents and additional revenues will be collected by the government.

He said it’s already difficult to find foreign investors at this time and that FDC is Filipino.

Villanueva is the site of some 10 industrial plants including Philippine Sinter, Steag State Power and Coca Cola Bottling.

Uy shared the concerns of the environmentalists and assured of helping monitor the emission of the FDC plant.

DOH-Caraga sends teams to Yolanda-hit Leyte, Samar

BUTUAN City––The Department of Health in Caraga has deployed a third team of doctors, nurses and psychosocial counselors to different barangays of Leyte and Samar severely affected by Supertyphoon “Yolanda” to reinforce the two teams earlier assigned there.

DOH-Caraga OIC Regional Director Minerva Molon said the teams were urgently needed in the typhoondevastated areas even as she announced that the DOH Operations Center was still in Code White Alert.

She also gave notice that all trainings, seminars and other human resource activities had been suspended to focus all efforts and services in relief operations to address the health needs of the survivors per Department Memorandum No. 2013-0329 dated November 13, 2013.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Dr. Gerna Manatad, DOH Center for Health Development-Caraga Regional Epidemiologist, said days after Typhoon “Yolanda” smashed into Guiuan, Eastern Samar on November 8, DOH-Caraga immediately organized a team of doctors and nurses to respond to the immediate medical needs of the affected population.

Four days after, a second team was deployed carrying medical supplies such as medicines, water sanitation and hygiene supplies, cadaver bags and other logistics.

In a statement, Molon said: “The Department of Health does not limit its services to the medical needs of the people, but to their psycho-social needs as well.

Our doctors, nurses, social workers and personnel are working their way to reach areas and people who are affected. While there are problems that hinder us from delivering our services, we will strive to reach our people and deliver to them their needs. This is our duty.”

Health officials urge persons at risk to take HIV test

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Submit to HIV testing!

This is the battle cry for all government and non-government groups working to trim down the increasing number of HIV cases reported.

Dr. Teodulfo Joselito Retuya, Cagayan de Oro City Social Hygiene Clinic Physician urged persons, especially those with risky behavior to submit for HIV testing.

He said early treatment can greatly help in prolonging the HIV from multiplying.

“It can spread very fast, in few months time it will

begin to affect the immune system but if treated early, persons living with HIV (PLHIV) will have higher chances of containing it and live a long life like any other healthy individual,” Retuya explained.

With ver y little improvement on changing the discrimination and stigma attached to the disease, the government has devised measures to reach out to more PLHIV, providing secured system and facilities, that they may come out and seek help from proper government agencies.

center, among others help facilitate early referral of suspected cases.

As of this year, more than 400 persons have submitted for voluntary HIV examination at the Cagayan de Oro Social Hygiene Clinic and some these were also referred to

the Northern Mindanao Medical Center for treatment.

by Ariel T. Cruz of the Commission on Filipino Overseas (CFO), during the ‘Talakayan sa PIA” held on November 23 at the Philippine Information Agenc y Regional Office 10.

Cruz said 241 actual cases were brought to the action line and handled by the members of the Inter Agenc y C ouncil Against Trafficking (IACAT).

He said 71 of the cases were on human trafficking, 66 cases on illegal recruitment while eight were mail-order bride cases.

The 1343 action line, he said, is a 24/7 hotline that attends and re s p on d s t o c a l l s re questing for assistance or reporting suspected human trafficking activities.

Data from the CFO shows that the 1343 action line has registered

over 17,000 calls as of July 31 this year since its inauguration in 2011.

Those who want to report trafficking-related cases can dial 02 then 1343, Cruz further said.

The guesting of CFO representatives in “Talakayan sa PIA” was one of the activities under t he i r an nu a l c om mu nity education program in the region to assist pro s p e c t i v e m i g r ant s in making decision regarding settling abroad and prevent them from becoming victims of human trafficking.

The CFO as a member of the IACAT disseminates information to raise public awareness on t he var ious issues concerning migration, intermarriages, illegal recruitment, and scheme of human t raf f ickers, Cruz said.

Millions of children today come from broken families.

But have you ever wondered if children of divorced parents totally get over it? Do they bounce back to live truly healthy, happy lives? Or are there any long-term damages done to kids by their parents divorcing?

Recent statistics show that 90 percent of children from divorced families experienced serious shock, grief, and fears.

50 percent felt rejected and abandoned. One third of the kids feared being left even by the parent they were still living with. Two thirds experienced extreme loneliness for their other parent they were not living with. And surprisingly, 37 percent of the children were even more unhappy 5 years after the divorce than they were when it first happened. In other words, time did not heal their wounds and pain.

After the children of divorced parents grew up, 40 percent of them never married, compared to only 16 percent of children who grew up with both their parents. Children of divorce were more likely to use drugs and alcohol before age 14. They had less social skills and confidence, and were less successful at university. Vice Governor Joey Pelaez earlier denounced the proposed P 30 billion coal plant in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental. However, the Misamisnons finally understand the hypocrisy of Pelaez after making a sudden 360 degree turn. Pelaez, who chairs the provincial board, suddenly allowed the passage of the Resolution allowing the construction of the ignoble coal plant in Villanueva.

Pelaez argued the resolution allowing the construction of the coal plant was a majority decision of the members of the provincial board. “I could not do anything because I was the presiding officer of the “special session” that leads to the passage of the resolution favoring the FDC to construct the coal plant in Villanueva,” Pelaez argued.

Besides, Pelaez said, that nobody submitted a formal opposition to the coal plant with the Office of the Vice Governor. Baloney!

Police arrest bogus UN representative involved in 20-day Zambo standoff

A M B OA N G A CITY, –The police authorities have arrested last Tuesday the bogus representative of the United Nations (UN) for his alleged involvement in the 20-day standoff last September in this city.

Ariel Huesca said the impostor identified as Daniel Xavier was arrested around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday

at the bus terminal in Barangay Bulua, Cagayan de Oro City.

Huesca said Xavier was arrested on the strength of a warrants of arrest issued by Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 15 of this city for his alleged involvement in last September’s standoff.

The 20-day standoff was triggered by the infiltration of hundreds of Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) rebels in this city whose intention was to occupy City Hall, hoist the MNLF flag and declare independence.

Hues ca said Xavier was charged for rebellion and violation of the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) together with

MNLF Chairman Nur Misuari, and other top rebel leaders like Ustadz Habier Malik, Bas Arki and Assamin Hussin.

“The suspect (Xavier) pretended to be a representative of the United Nations and assured MNLF chairman Misuari of the UN’s support in his declaration of independence,” he said.

No bail was recommended when the Court handed down the warrants of arrest against Misuari and his cohorts including Xavier.

Huesca said Xavier was taken to the headquarters of Police Regional Office-10 (PRO-10) for proper documentation. (PNA)

Zambo mayor leads rice payout to ‘work for food’ families ZAMBOANGA CITY – Mayor Ma Isabelle Climaco-Salazar led Tuesday in the distribution of rice as payout to 2,000 families in Barangay TalonTalon who participated in the “work for food” program that aims to help evacuees of the 20-day siege get temporary livelihood as rehabilitation efforts are underway.

Salazar thanked the United Nations World Fo o d Programme (UN-WFP) represented by Mishael Argonza for helping the city government through the City Agriculturist Office in providing rice to the evacuees in exchange for their work.

Tues day’s b enef iciar ies were part of the 10,000 families (not 3,000 families as earlier reported) affected by the 20-day siege and hired for coastal cleanup at seven kilos of rice per day for each family. Thus, e ach family gets one sack of rice for a week’s work.

City Agriculturist Diosdado Palacat, focal person of the Emergency Livelihood Cluster of the Zamboanga City Early Recovery/Recovery Coordination Structure, said the rice payout will continue Wednesday for 2,500 families in Barangay Mampang, and Thursday for 1,500 families in Barangay Arena Blanco, for a total of 6,000 families to include the 2,000 families in Barangay Talon-Talon.

The 4,000 other families will come from barangays Mariki, Rio Hondo, and from the evacuation centers in the barangays Taluksangay and Tulungatung.

These families will again be hired next month for tree an d m an g rov e prop a g u l e planting and they will receive one sack of rice each as payout.

AGUM CITY, Davao del Norte – The provincial government of Davao del Norte recognized the value of the corn, as the second most important crop in the country, by holding the first-ever Corn Congress of the province.

Corn farmers from all the local government units of the province converged at the Bulwagan ng Lalawigan to give the needed boost to the corn sector, where about 14

million Filipinos depend on.

Governor Rodolfo del Rosario assured to provide the essential support to the sector, in line with the province’s goal of increasing

production to attain food security.

“We aim to increase production of quality corn for human consumption, as well as to empower the farmers and increase their income, thereby improving their quality of life,” he said.

He said the program of the province is anchored on the Department of Agriculture’s Agri-Pinoy Corn Program.

The governor encouraged the corn growers not to waver

in their love of planting the crop, and to find more opportunities to expand their areas to increase income and sustain their livelihood.

Miguel Antonio Lorenzo, Sutherland Global Services assistant vice president for service delivery said his company can absorb as many as 200 to 300 applicants in a month to supply the still growing need for business process outsourcing services in the international market.

Karla Estrada on Daniel Padilla: ‘Buo ang loob niyan’

Moments after Yolanda hit Tacloban City, Karla Estrada revealed that she couldn’t calm herself down considering that her mother and other family members reside in the said town. Thankfully, her son, Daniel Padilla, helped her cope with the situation.

Citing latest data from the Integrated Provincial Health Office’s (IPHO) epidemiology and surveillance unit, the official said the new HIV infections were found based on separate screenings conducted in this city and in Cotabato City.

The province’s incidence of HIV, which causes deadly Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is up by 14 from the 31 cases recorded by the IPHO as of the end of October, he said.

Aturdido said a significant number involved individuals who had engaged in risky sexual behavior, among them unprotected sexual contacts among “men who were having sex with men” or MSM. He said five of the victims have died in the last three years due to complications caused by the disease.

“We have 37 patients currently seeking treatment at the SPMC (Southern Philippines Medical Center) in Davao City,” he said in a statement.

The HIV victims are specifically undergoing maintenance or antiretroviral drug (ARV) treatment at the SPMC, which is the Department of Health’s designated treatment hub for HIV/AIDS victims from southern and southwestern Mindanao, he said.

ARV drug treatment mainly stops the multiplication of the infected person’s viral load and eventually prevents them from further spreading the disease.

In some countries, the use of ARV drugs have helped effectively lower the incidence of HIV infection to about one percent and eventually stabilized the detected cases.

Owing to this, Aturdido said they are pushing for the creation of a special body that will spearhead efforts to curb the rising incidence of HIV in the area.

He said they proposed for such move to properly address the continuing spread of HIV within the province’s 10 towns and lone city.

Dubbed Provincial HIVAIDS Council, he said the proposed body will mainly lead various local campaigns on the disease, particularly in properly informing the public about it.

“The number of HIV/ AIDS victims in South Cotabato has been increasing and this has to stop,” Aturdido added. (MindaNews)

tephen Espinoza, executive vice-president of the Showtime premium cable channel in the US, said he will revive talks for a Manny Pacquiao - Floyd Mayweather bout with Top Rank CEO Bob Arum, according to a report

The 20-kilometer ride starts at Rizal Park to Bolton Extension, Magallanes, Quimpo Boulevard, Bolton Bridge, SM, Citi Hardware, turn right MacArthur Highway, Bankerohan Bridge, turn right Magallanes, Bolton Extension and end at Rizal Park.

Registration fee is only P100 or more. More than 200 bikers are expected to join.

“Participants can also bring relief goods for Leyte,” Nonato said.
