Red tape has again snagged the early completion of Cagayan de Oro City’s much-delayed sixth bridge across the Cagayan River.

Originally planned to start in the third quarter of 2008 under the administration of former Mayor

Constantino G. Jaraula, the J.R. Borja bridge finally got going on September, 2012 under former Mayor Vicente Y. Emano.

“It is 90 percent complete and is scheduled for completion by January 2015,” said Sandra V. Flores, regional information officer and spokesperson of the Dept. of Public Works and Highways

SAN FRANCISCO, Agusan del Sur—Long-time tree farmer Jerson Mellama has planted 95 tree seedlings in just 24 minutes, making him the fastest planter who joined the “Treevolution” in the neighboring three towns

of this province.

Mellama was among the 310 volunteers who came in droves yesterday to plant rubber and other indigenous tree species within the 20-hectare denuded area of Manobo ancentral land in the hinterlands of Sitio Tumuahong in Sta. Cruz village in Rosario town, which is about

six kilometres from the national highway The volunteers planted a total of 70,400 seedlings in the area in an hour-long simultaneous tree planting activity yesterday morning as part of their contribution to the Mindanao-wide attempt to break the Guinesss book of world records.

Throughout the province, organizers are setting a target of 116,000 tree seedlings in four different cluster areas.

The area in Sta. Cruz village is part of the three other areas of the three towns under the jurisdiction of the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office based here.

CENR Officer Melvin Bustillo said the area in the remote village in Azpetia in Prosperidad town has surpassed the target of 10,000 seedlings with 400 more since most of those who joined are tree farmers of Falcatta, a popular softwood tree specie which are abound in the province.

Being known as one of the disaster-prone countries in the world, the Philippines was identified among the natural disaster hot-spot by a study conducted by the World Bank in 2008. The country ranks 3rd following countries like Vanuatu and Tonga. According to the study 50.3% of its total area and 81.3 percent of its population are prone to natural disasters.

Among the most damaging disasters recorded by the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) are tropical storms and floods. In effect, these calamities cause the loss of lives, Livelihood , houses, and services.

Mindanao Region Committee are strong in the “SR 2” covering Compostela Valley and “SR4” covering Davao del Norte and southern Bukidnon.

The Eastern Mindanao Command, where the 10th belongs, estimated the NPAs to number 2,000 in Southern Mindanao.

cent of our barangays in the region,” del Rosario said.

He said the police and the military in the region “need more training and facilities to increase their capacities in handling these forces”.

The RDC presented its peace and development targets for 2016 including the reduction of the number of insurgents by 80 percent and reduced number of atrocities by insurgents by 90 percent.

Peace advocates such as the Philippine Ecumenical Platform of the Philippines and Ecumenical Bishops Forum said that government should reopen talks with the CPP to resolve the roots of the armed conflict.

Human rights group Karapatan and the indigenous peoples group Pasaka pointed at continued military operation for continuing human rights violations, with fears of it increasing further as the military recruits members of the tribes into paramilitary units. (davaotoday.com)

Completion target of Bankerohan Bridges 2 on ‘Nov. 6’, says DPWH

Davao City - The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH XI) Project Engineer Alvin C. Cabuenas told that on November 6 this year is the expected date of the completion of the construction repair of Governor Generoso (Bankerohan) Bridges II along Davao Cotabato road Mc Arthur Highway Davao City, this clarification during on an exclusive interview of MDN Davao.

Last few weeks Davao Mayor Duterte told to press people on his disappointment of the delayed construction of the bridge because as he observed only few workers are working in the construction site and the traffic congestion of the area are heavy specially during pick hour and the people of Davao are complaining.

Engineer Cabuenas explained that the delaying on constructing of the bridges is due to bad weather and strong current of water cause by flood. He also clarified the issue of few workers working on the contruction

site. As of press time a 69 percent of the contruction accomplished, Cabuenas added.

Local surfers dominate int’l surfing competition

LOUD Nine, General Luna, Siargao Island - Local surfers overcame stiff competition from their foreign counterparts for an all-Filipino finals cast in the three-day 20th International Surfing Competition that ended Sunday in this world-renowned surfing capital.

Edito “Piso” Alcala and Carlito Nogalo, both natives of Siargao, faced off in the finals won by Alcala, who also bagged the championship in the 2008 edition of the competition, also in this town.

Alcala bested Nogalo in a 30-minute duel by pumping four-to five-foot right hander barreling waves.

Alcala’s two top scoring waves in the finals were a 9.55 and a 9.90, two almost perfect scores for an almost perfect heat, 19.45 out of a possible 20 points.

His win came with a cash prize of at least 4,000 USD. In the quarterfinals, the eventual champion broke his surfboard after his final wave, but scored a perfect 10 for a massive barrel in seven in his quarterfinal heat against 16-year-old ripper John Mark Tokong.

In the semifinals, the now two-time champion showed no mercy to frustrate young Australian Chris Zaffis’ bid for the title.

At the iconic wooden tower, friends and fans greeted Alcala, now a proud winner of the first-ever Association of Surfing Professionals Qualifying Series event.

On the first day of the competition, the humble champion had shown his dominance after garnering the highest scores in both best waves and best heat points.

Asked how it felt to compete against his friend Nogalo in the finals, he replied: “We hang out, and we’re good friends. And when the contest is on, that doesn’t affect us. Out there in the waves I still look out for him, and vice versa. But in the end one of us will win, and today it was me.”

“I know he’s happy for me just like I would be happy for him if he was the winner,” he added with a smile.

“Piso and I have been friends for a long time and we’ve also been competing with each other a long time.

He’s very lucky that he was able to get some really good waves out there today. As for me, I got a few waves

but it wasn’t enough to win this time. But there will next year. I train the whole year round so I’ll definitely be ready for another try next year,” Nogalo said when asked the same question.

The event was supposed to start on Sept. 24 but had to be delayed for two days because the waves were too small then.

Round 1 kicked off on Sept. 26, although it was only on the 27th that the swells increased significantly allowing for the completion of Rounds 2 and 3 for the total of 48 competitors coming mostly from Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Israel, US, UK and Indonesia.

The quarterfinals, semifinals and finals were completed in the best waves of the entire event.

This was a historic event for not only the local community but for Philippine surfing as a whole. With the support of the local government units and after a year of being sanctioned by the Asian Surfing Champion-

“Even though I myself cannot surf, I’ve been supporting this event for a lot of years now and trust me, we will make it even bigger and better next year,” he said.

“I really enjoyed the competition. I’m excited because it’s been hands-on work for me. We’re all so proud for having produced champion surfers that are at par with foreign surfers.

Alcala and Nogalo are both from Siargao and they’ve been surfing for many years, honing their skills. I hope this international event will continue in the next twenty years and more with the help of private organizations and with the local government

“Surigao is also the only province the Philippines that is hosting two international events. Aside from surfing we also host the International Game Fishing tournament in Pilar. Hopefully we will discover other events we could stage here in Siargao to promote our island.”

Sanctioned by the Association of Surfing Professionals and the Asian Surfing Championships, the event was presented by the MVP Group of Companies and Manila Mining Corporation, with the municipal and provincial governments as event organizers.

Brgy officials should be represented in electric cooperatives board The eligibility of barangay officials to run for a seat in the board of directors of electric cooperatives must be considered because they have better grasp of the situation of the communities that the electric cooperatives serve.

By the very nature of their position, they can very well craft policies that are responsive to these needs according to a proposal in Congress.

If this is passed as law it will amend Section 26-A of Presidential Decree No. 269, as amended, otherwise known as the

“National E le ctrific ation Administration Decree.”

PD No. 269 was issued by then President Ferdinand Marcos in 1973 to strengthen the government’s electrification program by reorganizing the National Electrification Administration (NEA) that was earlier created under Republic Act No. 6038, also known as the “National Electrification Administration Act.” It allowed barangay officials to be members of the board of directors of electric

cooperatives.

However, PD No. 269 was amended by Republic Act No. 10531or the “National Electrification Administration Reform Act of 2013” which disqualified all government elected and appointed officials in the board.

Recognizing that these barangay officials were used in the past by interest groups to the detriment of the consumers, the creation of a screening committee composed of credible members of the community would probe

the qualifications of the candidates for the board.

The proposal allows the elderly to be members of the board of directors, recognizing the insights and experience that these citizens have acquired over the years and thus extending their opportunity to contribute to the general welfare of the community, by removing the cap of the age qualification of the candidates.

It is quite tenable that the proposal, when passed, would improve the service of electric cooperatives to its consumers.

At Victoria Plaza, you’re out of place?

Once upon a time, there was a mall in Davao City, which my family and I considered as “home”. And not only me. Since almost 20 years, Victoria Plaza Mall in Bajada, Davao City became also the meeting point of many German nationals.

Several other nationals followed - no wonder, the Bureau of Immigration is just around the corner.

Especially during Fridays, there has been no question, that around ten o’clock in the morning, “we” would meet in the fast food area, stick together, take our lunch, shop in the grocery, pay bills, and visit different shops etc. etc.

But now, no more!

Enough is enough! Several very unfriendly incidients, which happened some days ago to many people, including me, my family, friends and some visitors from abroad, made us decide to take a pause visiting the fast food section.

Here’s the case. The moment, you take a table to sit down, be ready for very zealous security guards, approaching you and informing you, that one is only allowed to sit down there for eating. The moment, you are done, you should leave the table and “vanish”. Also, any “kind of doing work or business” is prohibited. So far so good - but ... .aris Students from different schools, taking lunch break (or what ever!) have been requested to leave the fast food area after their meals were done. Notebooks haven’t been allowed.

Some foreigners, just arriving from the Immigration office, while waiting for their ordered food and drinks, started completing their forms to fill out.

Guards told them to stop this, because doing paper works would be prohibited in the area.

Friends from abroad, who used to join us there since many years, left the fast food area in very bad mood, after guards told them, “to stop doing business with us”. Just keep in mind: everybody ordered food and drinks. The moment, my wife and family members were done with their lunch, guards again approached them!, to leave and give space “for waiting customers looking for tables where to take lunch”!

Imagine, innumerable un-

occupied tables and chairs have been noticed during that time.

To make this story short here are some questions.

Has Victoria Plaza’s management taken leave of its senses? Don’t tempt fate but, what’s going on here?

No more common sense?

We all can observe, that this mall is not fit for a place to be in any more. Just one example among many: try to visit the comfort rooms!

It seems, that Victoria Plaza’s management forgot all common sense and even the simpliest business knowledge. Nevertheless, we are ready to pay just compensation to private landowners with titled properties.

The flood risk mitigation program is a joint project between DPWH in the national government and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

According to the JICA website, the objective of the project is to mitigate flood risk in Cagayan de Oro River Basin through the construction of flood protection measures, and thereby contributing to the sustainable and stable economic development in Cagayan de Oro River Basin.

The initial plan for the flood control project designed to control floods in the Cagayan River drew flak from landowners and residents whose dwelling and properties were found to be sited outside the dikes running 12 kilometers upstream on both sides of the river.

However, Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar S. Moreno said it’s too early to react to what is essentially only an initial study drawn up for the purpose of negotiating the loan with the Japanese government.

“This is a good project but controversial. JICA contracted an engineering group which was mandated to come up with the plan.

AMBOANGA City - Mayor Beng Climaco has appealed to public for food and blankets for victims of a conflagration in a neighborhood that claimed the life of an elderly man in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines.

Climaco rushed to the area and spoke to village officials and fire victims.

The fire razed at least 100 houses at Lacaste Ville in the village of Pasonanca on Saturday afternoon that killed octogenarian Virgilio Nunez.

Police said the fire, which started in the house of Roberto Calapiz, was due to an electrical short circuit. Most of the fire victims were brought to the Pasonanca Elementary School which served as temporary shelter.

“I want everyone to realize this is just an academic exercise, something the JICA can use for discussion purposes. This is not yet the detailed plan,” he stressed. “This was made on the basis of a classroom discussion of the Mega Plan and do whatever you can given this amount. I want to stress there has been adequate discussion of this program at the barangay level. For long I also came to know that some landowners questioned privately and publicly that they were not consulted.”

Once the loan is finalized we can go into the preparation of the detailed engineering.

The implementation would take about eight years and hopefully the start would take place if not this year, next year,” Moreno added.

The mayor urged the affected stakeholders to be patient and wait for the right time to voice their views on the project once it is finalized.

be far greater to everyone if this project would not push through,” Mayor Moreno emphasized. “What we can do is we can address particular risks to certain groups and individuals best as we can and hoping that JICA would listen.”

“Our primary objective is to come up with this program which is very important to the city. There has to be discussions on areas where said groups which would be adversely affected because of this program and that would depend on how the detailed plan would look like.”

“Debating now on the plan that was initially prepared by JICA I think would be premature at this time,” Moreno said. “Even in NEDA there are questions on the propriety of the embankment.”

ir passengers traveling through Northern Mindanao’s gateway airport will have more flexibility in arranging their schedules with the return of early morning and night flights at Laguindingan Airport by January, 2015.

In the latest update on the ongoing navigational aids project installation, Regional Development Council-X (RDC-X) CoChair and NEDA-X Regional Director Leon M. ERDS-10 hosts Learning Event for farmers’ livelihood, env’t

he Ecosystems Research and Development Service Region (ERDS-10), Cagayan de Oro City held an Information, Education, Communication Learning Event on the Economic Importance of Agroforestry and Bamboo Technology to Farmers of People’s Organization of Kulago Farmers Association (KFA), Pagatpat, Cagayan de Oro City, for sustainable livelihood and environmental protection.

The learning event as part of the Research, Development, Extension Project on Application and Piloting of Sustainable ENR Technologies in the Rehabilita-

tion of Typhoon-Affected Upland and Coastal Areas was designed to support the implementation of the project and to provide a refresher lesson to the beneficiaries on the basics on agroforestry and bamboo technology. It carried out the theme, “Agroforestry ug Kawayan: Panginabuhian ug Pangkinaiyahan” that aimed to promote adoption of Agroforestry and Bamboo technologies. These are proven potential livelihood options and tested rehabilitation strategy in denuded Community-Based Forest Management (CBFM) areas.

The KFA farmers are the beneficiaries of the pilot

project in the 2-hectare CBFM area which is hoped to become an agent and model in transforming the landscape from degraded grassland area into a protection zone of the Iponan River Watershed.

Romualdo sought RDC-X support and endorsement to the Bureau of Customs (BOC) Office of the Commissioner “to declare the MCT as a ‘Principal Port of Entry’ and provide therein a full complement of BOC Staff under a District Port Collector to ensure administrative efficiency at the MCT, and immediate response of the BOC to the needs of the importers and exporters operating at MCT. Currently, the MCT is classified as a sub-port of the Cagayan de Oro base port, thus the absence of plantilla positions at the MCT as staff are mostly detailed from the Cagayan de Oro base port where ship calls by foreign vessels are minimal.

The PhilExport/PIA paper cited how PhP 4.969 billion or 85 percent of the Php

For CY 2014, the Sub Port Collector reported during the latest RDC-X Macro Committee meeting held last 05 August 2014 at NEDA office that MCT-SP has been tasked to collect 87 percent of the Total Revenue target of District 10.

“Cargo throughput and ship calls have been consistently increasing in the past years, thus, MCT-Sub

Port takes pride in being the number one contributor to the Bureau of Customs’ Revenue Collection in District 10,” said Engr. Augustus N. Adis, PME, president of the PHIVIDEC Industries Association. “ With the advent of the ASEAN Economic Community next year (AEC 2015), the MCT would be a key logistics hub to cater to wider trade opportunities in the ASEAN region.”

Declaring the MCT as a principal port, and rebranding it underscores the important role of the MCT in the region’s goal of becoming a major gateway domestically and internationally, he added.

As a Principal Port of Entry, MCT would have a full complement of BOC Staff under a District Port Collector which should ensure administrative efficiency in customs collections and attending to the needs of the importers and exporters.

Safer, more efficient boats at less cost

Come floods or high water, DOST’s fiberglass boat can haul people to safety. It is engineered for more effective and efficient rescue at a much less cost than rubber rescue boats. Every community then should have at least one.

During floods and heavy rains, rescue boats come in handy in hauling people and animals to safety. But sometimes debris gets in the way and –pfffft—just a puncture and the boat collapses. But not when it’s made of fiberglass.

In 2011, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) -IVA launched a fiberglass rescue boat for evacuations and rescue operations. Now, DOST came up with the modified version, making the boat safer and more efficient.

Engr. Eric Bautista of D OST IV-A Technical Services Unit said that the initial model has gone through changes based on the feedbacks and observations of actual users.

“The current design now houses the outboard motor’s gas tank in a strategically placed compartment,” he said. “ The paddle arrester has also undergone changes to suit the needs of the operators.”

This means that the rescue boat now has a storage compartment for the gas tank which can only be accessed by the operators.

“The paddle strap was re-engineered to provide a sturdy clamping point while maintaining ease of usage,” says Bautista.

The Fiberglass Rescue Boat (FRB) is specifically

made to order. Engr. Bautista advises every barangay to have a boat ready, especially in Metro Manila area for rescue operations.

Engr. Bautista suggested flood prone areas to have three units and coastal areas with less flooding should have at least one.

Currently, DOST fiberglass boats are in place in several areas, namely Benguet, Infanta (Quezon), Gen Nakar (Quezon), Gapan (Nueva Ecija), San Mateo (Rizal) and Brgy.

CAAP records show air passenger traffic for July-Dec. 2013 at the new facility added to the Jan.June, 2013 volume of the Lumbia Airport breached 1.89 million passengers, or over three times the 606,216 recorded at Lumbia in 2006, a mere seven years ago.

Despite Laguindingan Airport operating only by daytime under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), air passenger traffic still grew by 268,000 in 2013, the largest increase registered during the CAAP’s operations at Lumbia which had consistently attained double digit growth in passenger volume every year from 2006-2013.

The P14.6-billion Laguindingan airport development was among the three new PPP projects totaling P139.7-B approved by the NEDA board, chaired by President Aquino last 20 June 2014. “ The operation and maintenance is on a PPP Basis and part of the PPP terms of reference is the CAPEX or Capital Expenditure which includes the lengthening of the runway, as well as the expansion of the terminal building,” Mr. Dacanay said. “Later on

we will have two more air bridges which will enable us to accommodate four aircraft simultaneously.

And the runway will be extended to 3.5 kilometers thereby making it of international standard.”

NEDA is now preparing the guidelines for the bidding for the PhP 14.62-billion ($334.21 million) Public Private Partnership Project for the Laguindingan Airport Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Project.

The project involves the O&M of the Laguindingan Airport along with the development of associated infrastructure and facilities, and the installation of all required equipment to meet applicable international standards.

S p e c i f i c a l l y, t h e s e include expansion/construction of new passenger terminal(s) and associated infrastructure and facilities; O&M of the passenger terminals (new and existing) during the 30-year concession period; development of airside facilities, including, among others, the apron, runway and taxiway ; enhancement/ development of airside facilities to meet the enhanced scale of operations at the airport over the required duration; and an expansion of the passenger and cargo terminals, and

parking lot.

The initial Terms of Reference for the Operations & Maintenance PublicPrivate Partnership (O&M PPP) Development Plan of Laguindingan airport covered its operations and maintenance. But it was later recommended for upgrading by the RDC-X to include expanded capacity and additional facilities to be carried out in three (3) phases.

Phase 1 specifies the expansion of the passenger terminal building to 14,490 sq.m. from the present 7,184 sq.m. expansion of the cargo terminal building to 8,652 sq.m. from the present 350 sq.m. and expansion of the parking lot from 10,300 to 24,600 sq.m.

Ay a l a L an d , w h i c h originally owned 183 of 417 hectares of the land acquired by the government to develop the airport complex, plans to develop an aerotropolis around the airport. This is part of the pre-conditions granted by Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines for expropriating the lands the government bought from the corporation. Ayala Corporation, the parent company of Ayala Land, has previously indicated its intent to bidders for the O&M and expansion PPP project for Laguindingan

Airport.

“Besides prioritizing the expansion of the passenger and cargo terminals and related facilities, we would still have to provide for additional space for Customs, Immigration, Quarantine and Security (CIQS) facilities if we wish to host international flights,” Mr. Bodiongan added.

Meantime, the CAAP is studying the feasibility of constructing additional terminal building and facilities to meet the increasing passenger and cargo volume, said Ret. Gen. William Hotchkiss, CAAP chief in an earlier interview.

With the large South Korean presence in Cagayan de Oro, the regional office of the Department of Tou r i s m i s e y e i n g flight routes from Busan to Cagayan de Oro via Singapore or a direct route from Busan to Cagayan de Oro to further bolster tourism in the region.

“The first flight from Korea is scheduled to arrive by December, hopefully,” Mr. Dacanay said.

Catalino E. Chan III, Department of Tourism (DOT) Region X Director, said the DOT is eyeing a Busan, South KoreaSingapore-Cagayan de Oro (via Laguindingan) route since statistics show

Cagayan de Oro has one of the highest number of resident Koreans in the Philippines.

“However, we are conducting further studies to see if the projected passenger volume from Busan would be sufficient to justify a direct link to Cagayan de Oro without dropping by Singapore, which has one of the highest number of resident Filipinos and can further bolster passenger traffic along this route,” he added.

Mr. Chan said the projected passenger traffic along the proposed route should also be able to sustain at least twice weekly flights to allow Koreans a return flight within the week.

Korea was the Philippines leading visitor market in 2013, followed by the United StatesJapan, China and Taiwan. The DOT has set a “fighting target” of 10 million foreign tourist arrivals by 2016.

Renovated Museo de Oro opens at XU campus

he newly renovated Museo de Oro was inaugurated last Saturday,

September 28, inside in downtown Cagayan the sprawling Xavier de Oro. University main campus Xavier Center for along Corrales Avenue Culture and the Arts

(XCCA) director Hobart Savior said that the museum building remains three stories high but what’s new inside are the presentation of the artifacts housed in the three exhibit rooms.

“I can proudly say that our museum is now at par with international standard. All the artifacts are now enclosed in glass cases, maintained according to how they should be,” Savior said.

The t wo exhibit rooms at the ground level house the ethno history and ethnology of Northern Mindanao while the Fr. Francisco Demetrio Gallery at the second level house the memorabilia of the founder of the original Xavier University Folk Life Museum in 1967.

Mayor Oscar Moreno, who cut the ribbon during the symbolic reopening, said everytime he has visitors in his office, he would always make sure to suggest Museo de Oro in their itinerary.

“We are very rich in history. In other countries, tourists make sure to visit museums first before going anywhere else,” Moreno said.

ing National Museum archaeologist Dr. Mary Jane Bolunia was equally impressed with all the collections at Museo de Oro. “Educational museums need not be a monopoly in Metro Manila. They must be also be located in the provinces so people would know their culture,” Bolunia, also the head of the famed balangay excavation te am in nearby Butuan City, quipped.

She was particularly awestruck with the lifelikeness of the Matigsalug mannequins inside Exhibit Room 1.

There is a reason and purpose for everything www.chinkeetan.com I woke up today at 2am to catch a flight to Iloilo at 3:50 am for my seminar at SM. My body was asking me to go back to sleep but my mind was telling me to wake up and go to the airport. I was able to take a power nap during the flight of an hour, and my producer picked us up at the airport.

We were there too early for the event, and I met a new friend. We killed time through exchanging personal experiences and stories.

While he was sharing his personal story, and I listening to him; it really struck a chord in my heart. Why? His story was just like a telenovela or pang “Maalala mo Kaya” type. His parents got separated when he was young. He was entrusted to a relative, because he was too sickly. Back then, his family cannot afford to give his medications. Even when he was fully recovered, he was not taken back by his original family. He was left for good with his relatives.

Christmas and special occasions were the only times he was visited. For him it was blessing; since he was accepted and treated by his relatives as their own.

He was well provided and taken care of.

I was kind of surprised with the set up; it made me ask a very personal question.

“How did you feel when you were being visited? Did you ask and wonder when will your father going to bring you home again?”

But I was more surprised at his reply; he said, “No, I never asked and didn’t bother to ask! Well, if my father does not welcome me, I am ok with that. I was welcomed and loved here. Kaya nga, minsan di ko rin maintindihan bakit masyadong nagdradrama ang mga ibang tao kung may problemang pinagdadaanan.

Weak sila, hindi sila marunong magdala ng problema.”

I was impressed. His outlook in life is so strong despite of what he went through. But, I just felt there is something not right. So I looked at him eye to eye and asked, “Are you really ok? Did you not feel any hurt when it happened? Are you just trying to mask the feeling of pain by denying it?

Are you presenting a front that you are ok even if you are not?”

Suddenly the conversation took a different turn; the stoic expression from his face has faded and his inner emotions were switched. He confessed; he felt the pain of rejection and doesn’t want to be hurt again, the reason he needed to be strong. This is to save himself from further pain. He became insensitive to other people’s feelings. He doesn’t know if he can handle another rejection even from his closest friends.

But God is good; I showed him some of the blogs I wrote from the past week on REJECTION AND ABANDONMENT. He read it; letter by letter and word for word.

After reading everything, he then admitted; “yes, I was just denying”. Now I know I need to confront the pain, and I am willing to move forward.

So I felt prompted by God; to pray for him. I gave him a hug that he may not yet received from his biological father. He was so thankful and relieved that I spoke to him, and helped him understand this part of his life.

I thought I went to Iloilo to only do a seminar but God has a reason and a purpose why I was there; to also encourage a person who is in pain.

The more prominent artifacts include the following: the menu of what our founding fathers ate during the declaration of Independence at Malolos, Bulacan on June 12, 1898; recorded epics of Manobo, Talaandig and Subanon tribes; boat coffins of wood; archaeological collections from Huluga Cave and open site excavation; the textile exhibit from the Spanish through the Japanese and contemporary eras and many others.

The artworks by Vamenta and Estarte at the Demetrio Gallery are equally stunning – they were mostly done by watercolor or enamel in illustration boards, indigenous katcha cloth and wood.

Museo de Oro aims to continue further research and studies primarily on local history and folkloristic and comparative religion in Mindanao as well as in the entire

country. For this, it is open for adults at P50 per visit (inclusive of all galleries) and P20 for students.

Curator Burton encouraged everyone to visit Museo de Oro since studying our past – early lifestyles, social structures, beliefs, literature, among others – is pivotal in understanding our present.

“We need to try to understand our history through these artifacts because they contain stories about who we really are,” stated Dr. Burton.

It first opened its doors in 1967 at an obscure room in Lucas Hall supposedly as an audio visual aid for students. The current building was opened by no less than President Corazon Aquino herself in 1987.

The renovation was started during the incumbency of Xavier University president Fr. Jose Ramon Villarin in 2011.

i n n e rs of t he first-ever Smart Prepaid ‘Live All Out’ Mobile Photography Contest were revealed earlier this month, in a simple awarding ceremony at Graphic All-In Store, Cagayan de Oro City.

Organized by wireless services leader, Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), the competition encouraged Smart subscribers to capture moments during the Higalaay: Kagay-an Festival using their mobile phones.

Photos were then uploaded to Facebook with hashtags #SmartKagayan, #SmartLiveAllOut and #HigalaayCdo. During the two-week contest period, close to 600 entries were submitted, as the Kagay-anons celebrated the feast of St. Augustine. What set them apart from the usual festival photographs was that entries for the photo contest focused more on their experience, and how they uniquely viewed their city, the “City of Golden Friendship”. By capturing photos with mobile phones, participants were able to tell more personal stories, as shown in their photo entries.

THE WINNERS Three judges, who are experts in photo-journalism and street photography, reviewed and rated the photos, and among the many entries, three photography enthusiasts emerged as winners.

Awarded with a brand new Nokia Lumia 1020, Paola Michelle Pilapil of Hashtag Productions came out on top, with her photo of two lady vendors at the San Agustin Cathedral.

The photo of the ladies, talking to each other and framed by numerous candles and religious items, was a consistent favorite among the judges.

“Whenever I pass by the San Agustin Cathedral, I always buy candles. This image moved me because it tells a story of a Kagayanon’s hard work and spirituality,” says Paola, who has been a photo enthusiast since she was a little girl. Another photo of hers which was among the judges’ top 10 picks, juxtaposed two kinds of people in a fiesta – those excited to watch the festivities and those who slept through it.

Noel Villa, founder of the Cagayan De Oro Rugby Club, came in at third place. His photo titled “Mango Man” depicts a mango vendor hawking his mangoes on the streets of Cagayan de Oro. “I really liked this shot since

the lines seemed to frame the mango man. I wanted to highlight him as the main subject, and not just as a side story,” says Villa.

Aside from being a coach and fitness trainor, Villa is also an ambassador for the Hipstamatic Photography App. Winners of the best photo per category are: Paola Michelle Pilapil for the I ♥ CDO category, Noel Villa for the Kagayanon Foodscapes category, Mecheel Casenas for the Higalaay Festival Experience category and Kevin Gus Torlao for the Street Dancing and Parade category.

Judges for the contest included Froilan Gallardo and Bobby Timonera, award-winning photojournalists of MindaNews, and Fourth Legara, a well-known artist and photo-blogger. They judged each photo in terms of Visual Impact (30%), Theme (20%), Creativity/Composition/ Originality (20%), and Technical Excellence (20%).

Through the contest and mobile photography seminars, participants learned to maximize the use of their mobile phone cameras. Jay Valmonte, a member of the CDO bloggers says, “We thank Smart for empowering us to use our mobile devices to showcase our city. It’s truly living all out.”

“The contest is very unique as it shows people that they can have good photos even using only a mobile phone,” says Pilapil.

“My family and I had been going to the different festivals in the Philippines, and I joined this contest because it could become a venue to show others what our own city is all about,” Pilapil adds.

The Smart Live All Out Mobile Photography Contest was organized to encourage mobile photography and support the Cagayan de Oro City Tourism Office’s efforts to promote not just the Higalaay Festival, but the city as well.
