Online hiring in Philippines declines by 36% YOY in July Your Mindanao-wide Community Newspaper

FEWER Filipinos have found employment through electronic recruitment as only hiring activity in the country declined by 36 percent year on year (YOY) in July, according to the Monster Employment Index (MEI) Philippines.

MEI data also showed a four percent drop in erecruitment activities in June 2015.

The production/manufacturing, automotive and ancillary industry registered the lowest growth YOY at -57%, just behind engineering, construction and real estate at -50 percent.

“It is not surprising that the production and manufacturing sector and engineering and production jobs are still seeing the steepest decline across the Philippines. The industry has been in turmoil for the past one to two years as it has faced numerous constraints, meaning job activity has also been heavily affected,” said Sanjay Modi, managing director of Monster.com for India, Middle East, Southeast Asia and Hong Kong.

“This slowdown in erecruitment activity is highlighted by the fact that only one industry group and one occupation group out of all monitored by the MEI registered any positive growth between July 2014 and July 2015,” Monster.com said.

Finance and accounts decreased by 12%; and software, hardware, and telecom fell by 18%.

2015, which represented a one percentage point growth from June 2015.

“The BPO/ITES sector in the Philippines continues to attract more talent, as new call centers continue to open up across the country.

The education sector is also seeing a slow increase in activity, as the government attempts to improve its health care and education system, with plans to hire more public-school teachers and health workers in the next couple of years,” Modi said.

In terms of occupation, the only job to register positive growth is customer service, which registered an 18% YOY hike, an eightpercentage points increase from June 2015.

Modi, however, said that “while overall online hiring activities in the region are looking bleak, the figures

could pick up in the coming months, particularly among Finance & Accounts roles.”

“Even with the introduction of new banking technologies which serve to facilitate operations within the industry, there will still be a demand for various roles to fill existing workplace gaps,” he added.

The MEI Philippines is a monthly gauge of onlinejob posting activity, based on a real-time review of millions of employer job opportunities culled from a large representative selection of career web sites and online-job listings across the Philippines.

The index does not reflect the trend of any one advertiser or source, but is an aggregate measure of the change in job listings across the industry.

Prices of corn in drop

KORONADAL City––Agriculture officials in South Cotabato are taking measures to cushion the impact of low buying price of corn products on farmers.

The law of supply and demand was seen as the reason in the slump of corn prices, according to Justina Navarette, provincial agriculture officer.

Navarette said corn production in the province has increased tremendously the past harvest season, causing the price of the commodity to drop.

She said the most affected town in the drop of buying price of corn grains was Banga, known as the corn capital of South Cotabato.

CAGAYAN de Oro City–– Disappointed and disheartened but still hopeful for a miracle, religious leaders and peace advocates have urged the two Mindanawon senators to explain their endorsement of the Senate version of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) which is deemed “less than” what has been granted to the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) and is patently inconsistent with the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB).

“If Senator TG Guingona and Senator Koko Pimentel truly feel the pulse of the peoples of Mindanao, they should have not signed the Marcos committee report. Guingona and Pimentel should explain to the peoples of Mindanao why they signed Marcos’

committee report,” said Professor Moner Bajunaid during the recent Religious Leaders-Legislators Meeting at the Archbishop Patrick Cronin Hall.

For most people, suicide is not an option. They have never experienced sadness’ death grip. Unfortunately for countless others, this is not the case.

Let’s light a candle on September 10 at 8:00 PM in commemoration of the World Suicide Prevention Day. Let us remember those who gave up on life, people who may not have really want to die, but couldn’t find any other way to stop the pain.

People often believe that suicide is something that only happens in the developed world. Unfortunately, the truth is, it is a global health problem that kills conservatively 800,000 people all over the world.

The National Statistics Office reports that even in the Philippines, suicide is on the rise.

Not True. Most suicidal people are not psychotic or insane. They may be upset, grief-stricken, depressed or despairing. Extreme distress and emotional pain are always signs of mental illness but are not signs of psychosis.

“If a person is determined to kill him/herself, nothing is going to stop him/her.”

Not True. Even the most severely depressed person has mixed feelings about death, and most waiver until the very last moment between wanting to live and wanting to end their pain. Most suicidal people do not want to die; they want the pain to stop.

The impulse to end it all, however overpowering, does not last forever.

“People who commit suicide are people who were unwilling to seek help.”

Not True. Studies of adult suicide victims have shown that more than half had sought medical help within six months before their deaths and a majority had seen a medical professional within 1 month of

their death.

“Talking about suicide may give someone the idea.”

Not True. You don’t give a suicidal person ideas by talking about suicide. The opposite is true -- bringing up the subject of suicide and discussing it openly is one of the most helpful things you can do.

The Czech Volunteers Again, not very many know about the 14 Gallant Czechs.

The Czechs were the only other nationals who volunteered as a group and fought alongside US and Filipino troops in Bataan.

Karel Aster was one of the Gallant 14. Aster was then an employee of a Czech shoemaking facility in Manila called Bata Co. Without any hesitation, Aster and 13 compatriots signed up for Bataan. 7 of them died either in combat or during the Death March.

Aster was confined initially in Cabanatuan. In a move to decongest the POW camp, white prisoners were eventually shipped to either Japan or Formosa. Aster was transferred to a coal mine in Japan where he did forced labor until he was released at the end of the war.

On arriving in the Philippines on May 1, 1945, the Mexican expeditionary force was assigned to an air field in Porac, Pampanga where they were attached to the US Air Force 58th Fighter Group.

From Porac, the Mexicans (who have nicknamed themselves Aztec Eagles), flew combat sorties to aid ground troops fighting in the Marikina watershed and later, in Bessang Pass.

In and around Bessang Pass, close air support proved crucial. It was especially difficult for the Aztec Eagles as they had to bomb and strafe hard-to-see Japanese positions which were very close to friendly forces.

Fortun backs pilgrimage to Butuan’s Golden Tara

ESPERANZA, Agusan del Sur--The Arya Tara Rigpa Rime Contemplative Dharma Community, a Buddhist group led by Lama Yeshe Lundhrup, has found support from Rep. Lawrence Lemuel Fortun to its pilgrimage to Butuan’s Golden Tara in Esperanza town here.

True to his advocacy of promoting Butuan’s rich history and cultural heritage, the Agusan del Norte First District congressman gave his thumbs up to the group’s plan of retracing the roots of Vajrayana Buddhism in the Philippines.

Fortun’s proposed HB No. 4823 declaring Butuan City as heritage tourism zone was taken up last week by the House Committee on Tourism.

We left Butuan City August 30, 2015 at 9 am and reached Barangay Cubo, Esperanza here at around 11:45 am. Barangay Captain Sotero Bignay welcomed the Buddhist group at the village hall. After signing the attendance book, we were escorted by the village head to the Golden Tara marker almost a kilometer away. An inscription at the concrete marker says the Golden Tara was found in 1917. A replica of the Golden Tara is covered by a transparent glass at the side of the marker.

At 15 minutes past noon,Lama Yeshe started the Buddhist ritual on an altarlike table filled with fruits fronting the Golden Tara marker with village officials and residents standing. For an hour, Lama Yeshe chanted and spoke in what I thought to be Sanskrit. At the end of the ceremony, the Buddhist group members offered the fruits on the ritual table while the barangay staff

Also known as the Golden Image of Agusan and Icon of a Storied Past (Butuan’s pre-colonial times), the Golden Tara is a gold figurine of a “Tara” or escort goddess from the Buddhist Pantheon). It was found in July, 1917 by Bilay Campos, a Manobo native, along the Wawa River bank near Esperanza after a storm.

The image was passed on to Blas Baclayon, the deputy governor of the province at that time. It was later acquired by the Agusan Coconut Company. In 1918, Prof. Henry Otley Beyer, the Father of Philippine Archeology, tried but failed to convince the government to buy the image for the National Museum due to lack of funds. The youth of today’s generation carry the same responsibility as the youth of yesteryears. In their shoulder lie the responsibilities in building better nation, in making the society a better place in which to live, in improving the community they serve. Our National Hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal said that, “The Youth is the hope of our fatherland”. This signifies that the Teachers play a significant role in the formal education process of learners. They touch the lives of the pupils in different ways either inside or outside the classrooms.

In fact, in school, teachers are” in the place of a parent” or “instead of a parent,” loco parentis in Latin word. This means that teachers become children’s second parents. It is important that parents

should show discretion in choosing the school to where their children spend most of their developmental years.

Moreover, teachers serve as portraitures that display expression personality and mood. They are subjects children look at with gaze of interest.

Teachers prove effective in motivating pupils to succeed in their studies. They show care and concern, inspire them in their studies. They show unconditional love and make classroom full of love. They develop positive values that are essential for life.

Indeed, Henry Brooks Adams, an American journalist, historian, academic, and novelist, says, “Teachers affects eternity; he can never where his influence stops.”

Duterte however admitted Ramos offered him the principles of national hero, Jose Rizal, as his guiding light if he becomes president. Ramos said Duterte is a follower of Rizal.

also did not ask),” Duterte said during his Sunday television program Gikan sa Masa Para sa Masa over ABS CBN. This, as Duterte admitted a meeting with Ramos took place in the former president’s office in Makati that was also attended by former press secretary Jesus Dureza, former presidential adviser for Mindanao Paul D om i ng u e z and ot he r p ol it i c a l p e rs ona l it i e s from Davao.

Duterte recalled he was on his way to the airport when he thought of dropping by R amos’ office.

He said they discussed many things but nothing on politics. He said Ramos gave him books he has written such as on governance and a book on Rizal.

It’s (elections) still far off…it’s far off from the truth because I am not really running),” Duterte said in jest, adding that shortly before he left Ramos told him: “If you happen to make it let Rizal be the guiding light of your governance”.

His meeting with Ramos had sparked speculat ions t he mayor was seeking advice from the former president. It was not their first meeting.

In his previous visit here, Duterte even get advice from Ramos such as to get used to holding or attending state gatherings and visit.

Up to this day, Duterte did not openly make a decision on whether to run or not although during a big rally here he said he

asked supporters to give him more time to talk to his family.

He has cited family opposition, health, age and finances as major reasons why he is not joining the presidential race in the May 2016 elections.

On family, Duterte’s daughter, former mayor Sara Duterte, has already stated that he has strongly opposed to his father’s presidential bid. She said she only suggested if possible not consider it because of health and age.

According to the mayor, his youngest son, Sebastian, is also opposing a presidential plan. He even quoted telling him in vernacular: “Can you not see yourself walking with an almost arch body”?

Duterte however said his son, Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte is supporting his presidential bid. (PNA)

IT studes develop ‘SoilMate’ Agriculturists can soon analyse soil properties through their mobile phones.

Information Technology students from the Central Luzon State University (CLSU) developed “SoilMate,” a mobile application that can show soil properties, color groups, and productivity.

The app has a Geographic Positioning System or GPS feature that can locate the origin of the soil.

Starting off within the provinces in Central Luzon, it is expected to guide agriculturists, farmers and researchers to identify the soil series in a specific location through simple steps.

Janndel Rosario, Gengee Madarang, and Ramon Rama of CLSU developed the app under the Enclosed

Field Category aimed at creating or enhancing an app from PhilRice.

The app was based on the guidebook Simplified Keys to Soil Series produced by the Institute.

SoilMate was the grand winner in the 2nd AgriHackathon, an application development competition, organized by the Information Systems Division (ISD) of PhilRice.

Once fully developed, users can also use the app to identify soil properties and soil management recommendations.

The developers acknowledged that this kind of app is highly technical and needs crowdsourcing. But

O help the farmers cope with and mitigate the extreme impacts of El Niño, Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) has encouraged farmers to plant drought-tolerant varieties and use El Niño-ready technologies on rice production.

In its latest advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Service Administration (Pagasa) said the drought and dry spell will even continue until next year.

These varieties are also known for their drought-tolerant properties preferable in areas where El Niño is expected to hit worst.

Drought-tolerant varieties for the uplands include PSB Rc80 (Pasig), PSB

Rc9 (Apo), and NSIC Rc23 (Katihan 1). Pasig can yield up to 8.7t/ha and matures in 112 days. Apo matures in 119 days with a maximum yield of 5.6 t/ha while Katihan 1 matures in 108 days with a maximum yield of 7.6t/ha.

Farmers can also use water-saving technologies such as controlled irrigation or alternate wetting and drying (AWD), aerobic rice, drip irrigation, and reduced tillage technology.

Meanwhile, PhilRice continues to roll-out information materials on El Niño. Said communication resources are available for download from the insti-

tute’s website (www.philrice. gov.ph).

New measure to allow gas power plants to use diesel as alternative fuel THE House of Representatives has approved on second reading a bill allowing natural gas power plants to use diesel as alternate fuel when there is an existing or imminent shortage of electricity.

House Bill 5587 amends Paragraph 5.3, Section 5 of Republic Act 9367 or the Biofuels Act of 2006, which restricts natural gas power generating plants from using pure or straight-run diesel.

DSWD assists displaced families in SurSur

Tandag City -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)Caraga, through the regional staff stationed in Surigao del Sur, provided family food packs to the 366 displaced families or 1,805 persons who evacuated on September 1, 2015 at 9 o’clock in the evening due to threats allegedly inflicted by a certain armed groups.

Family food packs, which cost Php418.32 each or Php153,097.00.80 in toto, were distributed on September 2, 2015 to the displaced families currently housed at Surigao del Sur Sports Complex, Tandag City.

Each family food pack distributed contains six (6) kilos of rice, eight (8) pieces of noodles, eight (8) canned goods, and eight (8) pieces 3-in-1 coffee.

Initial reports disclosed that these people are mostly IPs, some non-IPs, and are residents from Kilometer 16- Hanayan, Brgy.Diatagon, Lianga, Surigao del Sur. Another information bared that they were threatened to be massacred if they fail to leave the area within two days.

There were also displaced families coming from the municipalities of Tago and San Agustin who evacuated on September 2, 2015 at 12 o’clock in the afternoon.

At 5 o’clock in the afternoon of September 3, 2015, some 85 families or 434 individuals from Brgy.

Bolhoon in the municipality of San Miguel also evacuated to Tandag City.

Arcilla Lords it over “PJ” Tierro at the Oro invitational game

In what was considered as the highlight of the Cagayan de Oro Tennis Open on August 28-31, 2015, Johnny Arcilla, the country’s top tennister for the last ten years and Patrick John “PJ” Tierro, the current country’s number one in the Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA) rankings protagonist 6-4, 4-6 and 10-7 in a rare encounter that made thousands of Oro tennis enthusiasts gasping for breath for their breath taking shots never seen locally in years at the Golden Friendship Tennis Club (GFTC) grounds near the San Agustin Cathedral, The encounter was part of the city’s fiesta celebration as the contribution of the officers and members of the GFTC to showcase the country’s tennis best for the benefit of tennisters from all over Visayas and Mindanao who came over to Cagayan de Oro City just to witness the rare encounter of what the country’s tennis superstar can offer.

Arcilla’s consistency was evident from the first set when he continuously returned PJ Tierro’s booming serves which could hit the most difficult corners of the court. Tierro answered with lightning returns that had Johnny Arcilla racing to the corners of the court to retrieve Tierro’s seemingly impossible backhands. Ohhs and ahhs could be heard as the spectators saw for the first time how these PBAs of tennis wowed them no end.

But Tierro, still young at 28, avenged his loss in the first set and pestered Arcilla, already 34, with down the line backhands that travelled like huge round bullets fired from an armalite and made it 6-5.

They converted the deciding set into a supper tie straight 1-10. Then Arcilla, a native of Butuan City but based now in Manila mustering all his skills that made him at the top for ten years, pestered Tierro, a Philam at 5’9”

from Subic, with his passing shots and retrieval that had him bag the third and final set and eventually the whole game.

The peoples of Mindanao want a meaningful BBL,” he said.

Ledesma, who is also a member of the Citizens Peace Council, said that “a support for a meaningful BBL is a support for the Mindanao peace process.”

According to the participants to the Meeting, a meaningful BBL is one that addresses the longing for genuine self-governance of the Bangsamoro and embodies the political agreements of the MILF and government which are compiled in the CAB. Ledesma warned of a rise of Bangsamoro extremism like the ISIS in case a meaningful BBL fails to pass especially since there is now a growing number of young Moros who are entertaining political thoughts that have shades of extremism.

“A failed BBL will favor the growth of extremism/ fundamentalism/terrorism in Mindanao. It will not help solve the conflict,” he said.

Maestrado was rushed to the Medina Hospital where he later died.

In his 130-page “Regional Corn Roadmap CY (Calendar Year) 2012 to 2017” presentation, Boloron said Region 12 has an annual production of 1.20 million MT the previous year.

Boloron cited the strong corn sector performance to the wide area suitable for corn production, availability of high quality seeds and access to technology.

Region 12 has 429,319 hectares of corn fields.
