Italpinas champions energy efficiency thru Green Architecture in Mindanao Forum

The designer and builder of Northern Mindanao’s first green building shares its advocacy for energy efficiency at the 1st Mindanao Energy Efficiency Forum (MEEF) scheduled for 23 July 2013 at the Marco Polo Hotel in Davao City.

Drilon is Senate, prexy Belmonte retains house SENATOR Franklin Drilon beat former Senate president Juan Ponce Enrile by a vote of 17-6 for the Senate Presidency.

Enrile resigned in June following accusations of misuse of the Senate’s funds and the failure of his son Cagayan Rep. Jack Enrile to win a Senate seat in the May elections.

In his speech, Drilon vowed to change the image of the Senate and craft laws that will have an impact on the lives of Filipinos, particularly the poor, and bring the Senate closer to the masses.

Aquino’s SONA inspires the Filipinos, says Solon

REP. Rufus Rodriguez, 2nd District, Cagayan de Oro City, said that the State of the Nation Address (SONA) of the President Benigno Aquino III with the House of Representatives on Monday was very inspiring.

Rodriguez said that the Filipino people were proud of the President’s accomplishments knowing that the country’s economic fundamentals were moving upward.

He said that with the economy growing at 7.6 percent , the Philippine is regaining its ground as the new “economic tiger” in Southeast Asia.

Rodriguez , President of the Center for Democratic Philippines, said that as a legislator he was happy of the Aquino’s SONA.

“I am confident that with the investments growing and the economy moving in the right track, the Philippine economy could

move forward in the years ahead,” Rodriguez added.

CAGAYAN de Oro City-Armed clashes brought about by a long-standing “rido” (clan feud) in Bayang, Lanao del Sur claimed the lives of ten persons since Friday, with five others suffering injuries, the military said.

Col. Glen Macasero, commanding officer of the 103 Infantry Brigade, said the fighting between the Capal and Macugar families erupted when clan members gunned down a rival family member in Barangay Linao, Bayang town early Friday morning.

Macasero said the killing prompted the rival clans to retaliate and soon, intense fighting involving heavy caliber firearms erupted around the villages in Bayang town.

“By this time, the two families had called their relatives to come to their aid. The call went through nearby towns of Malabang and Lumbaca Unayan and every relative who had a firearm came to join the fighting,” Macasero said.

The Army has identified five of the 10 fatalities as Hadji Naim Macabago Capal; Latip Macabago Capal; Abar Tanggor Balt; Al-radji Tanggor; and Salahoden H. Acmad Dimacota.

Only one of the five wounded was identified: Arip Bacolod.

Macasero said the fighting stopped when the Army and police sent teams to separate the warring clans.

Initial reports identified the warring families as the Capal and Macugar families but non-governemental organizations (NGOs) in Lanao del Sur said the fighting has dragged other families to join the fray.

tion could erupt in another violent fighting again.

He said army and police forces sent to pacify the warring families in Bayang town could not even enter the villages controlled by the clans.

“We heard the clan members had fortified their positions in the villages and were prepared to repel rival family members planning to attack them,” Tahir said.

Tahir urged the Army and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to increase their patrols in Marawi City, fearing the clan war will spread into the provincial capital.

He said the warring families have relatives living in Marawi City.

“It is very hard to understand our culture but if efforts by the Army and PNP to settle this will fail, the clan war will escalate into Marawi City,” Tahir said, as he expressed fears innocent persons may be harmed.

Earlier reports said at total of 16 persons have been killed but ARMM Governor Mujiv Hataman told MindaNews on Sunday noon, “I have yet to get final info.”

Also on Sunday noon, Chief Supt. Noel Delos Reyes, ARMM police chief, told MindaNews in a text message that the Lanao del Sur Provincial Polic Office has “not yet provided the specific number of casualties.”

He said the feedback on the ground from other sources indicated “four to ten persons killed but I still have to get the official tally.”

Drilon elected Senate president; Enrile as minority leader

By Jelly F. Musico administration Senator Franklin Drilon has been elected new Senate president via overwhelming 17 votes as the Senate formally opened the first regular session of the 16th Congress Monday morning.

In his acceptance speech at the Batasan complex in Quezon City, Drilon urged the new senators to share fresh ideas and work with veteran colleagues to do their share in nation building.

“Let us set aside political differences. We must think innovation and solution. Let us do our share in nation building. Our people are expecting from us. Let us not fail them,” Drilon said.

The senators who voted for Drilon include Sonny Angara, Paolo Benigno Aquino IV, Alan Cayetano, Pia Cayetano, Lito Lapid, Loren Legarda, Francis Escudero, Antonio Trillanes IV, Ferdinand Marcos Jr.,

Belmonte re-elected House Speaker, Zamora is new Minority Leader Serge Osmena III, Aquilino Pimentel III, Grace Poe, Ralph Recto, Ramon Revilla Jr., Cynthia Villar, Teofisto Guingona III and Juan Ponce Enrile.

Aside from Drilon, Enrile got votes from Senators Jinggoy Estrada, Vicente Sotto III, Gregorio Honasan II, Nancy Binay and JV Ejercito, who automatically became members of the minority bloc.

Later, Recto has been elected unopposed as new Senate President Pro-Tempore while Alan Cayetano as Senate majority leader.

Drilon will open the joint session of Congress in the House of Representatives where President Benigno Aquino III will deliver his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) in the afternoon.

It was the fourth time Drilon has been elected Senate president.

Former President and now Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada and wife former senator Loi Estrada as well as Vice President Jejomar Binay attended the Senate opening in support of their children.

S enators Binay and Ejercito nominated Enrile for Senate president while another two neophytes,

Angara and Poe stood up to nominate Drilon.

The Senate session started at exactly 10:06 a.m. with acting Senate president Jinggoy Estrada as chairman and Honasan as acting majority leader.

Enrile and Sotto resigned as Senate president and majority leader before the last 15th Congress adjourned last June.

As widely expected, Quezon City Rep. Feliciano Belmonte Jr. was overwhelmingly re-elected as House Speaker of the 16h Congress garnering 245 votes against his rivals’ total of 34 votes.

San Juan Rep. Ronaldo Zamora was the closest, getting 18 votes, automatically making him the Minority Leader, edging Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, who got 16 votes.

THE Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) will launch Manual on Native Trees in the Visayas on July 24 at 2 p.m. at the Plenary Hall of Eduardo Aboitiz Development Studies Center, Cebu City.

Manual of Native Trees in the Visayas is a compilation of 101 native trees found in the Visayas.

The featured native trees are presented alphabetically by family with detailed photos and descriptions that include their official names, scientific names, local names, methods of propagation, and uses.

Readers are provided with a glossary to help them understand technical words, as well as practical tips on planting and taking

care of seedlings.

Through this reference material, RAFI hopes to raise awareness on and appreciation of the region’s indigenous tree species and promote efforts towards preserving our natural forest heritage and mobilize people to plant and nurture their own native trees.

The publication was conceptualized to contribute to the achievement of Goal 7 of the Millennium Development Goals, which is to ensure environmental sustainability by reversing the loss of environmental resources.

Giant ocean sunfish drifts ashore, dies CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — An Ocean Sunfish, also known as “Mola mola,” beached on the shores of Barangay Macabalan here Friday dawn, startling residents who were awed by its sheer size and the noise it made.

The fish, weighing at least 200 kilos and measuring about seven feet long, died hours after it was found by Macabalan resident Alcer Padera.

Officials said the fish “got stressed when curious people started gathering to see it.”

Miguelito Lim, of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources’ (BFAR) Fishery Law Enforcement Quick Response team, said Padera narrated to him that he was roused from sleep at around 2 a.m. Friday after hearing something big crashing against his house along the Macabalan shoreline.

“When he took out his flashlight, he saw that it was a big fish,” Lim narrated Padera’s account.

Lim said the fish made loud noises at it slammed on the

wooden stilts of Padera’s house, rousing his neighbors also.

He said Padera and his neighbors even tried to bring the big fish to the deeper portion of the shore to allow it to swim back to the sea.

“Padera told us they tried to bring the fish twice to the deeper portion but the fish kept going back under his house,” Lim said.

Lim said by the time they arrived at the site at around 7 a.m., the fish has already died.

Teodoro Bacolod Jr., head of BFAR’s Fisheries Inspection and Quarantine Services, said the Ocean Sunfish, which is the “heaviest known bony fish in the world,” might have been “disoriented” when it strayed to the shores of Macabalan.

He said the fish is com-

monly found in the deeper portion of the tropical waters in Central Philippines.

“It might have been a change in the water temperature because of climate change.

There are so many factors that could have disoriented the fish to stray,” Bacolod said, adding the fish died “because of stress when people started to gather and touched it.”

“These fishes are known to be solitary sea travelers.

Some roam the sea in pairs but never in a pack,” he said.

Bacolod said the fish may have been a juvenile considering that a matured Ocean Sunfish weighs up to at least 1,000 kilos.

He said the fish usually subsists on jellyfish, small crabs and shrimps.

Surigao Sur environmentalist fears for life; says mining, logging and politics behind threats SURIGAO CITY—“My life is now becoming harder,” said Chito Trillanes, who for two months now has been hiding in different safe houses afraid that he would be killed.

Trillanes is the spokesperson of the Social Action Center (SAC) in the Vicariate of Carrascal-Cantilan-MadridCarmen-Lanuza and Parang Zone (CarCanMadCarLanPar) in Surigao del Sur. As the SAC spokesperson, he’s been leading the campaign against destructive mining and logging in their area. He believed that leading the campaign earned him the ire of powerful businessmen and politicians in the province.

In the last elections, Trillanes rallied behind several politicians who have the same advocacy with the SAC. “This advocacy contributed to the victory of anti-mining advocate candidates like Cantilan Mayor Genito Guardo,” he said.

“Suko kayo sila kay napildi man ang ilang mga pro-mining bet (They’re very angry because their pro-mining bets lost during the elections),” Trillanes told MindaNews on the phone Friday.

Trillanes said he has no police or military escort to provide him security.

On Friday, the Philippine Misereor Partnership, Inc. issued a statement saying that on May 24, Trillanes’s mother was awakened by a suspicious noise at their house in Cantilan, Surigao del Sur. When she turned on the light at their veranda, she saw two bonnet-wearing men who rushed to a parked motorcycle and hastily left, it added.

Two months before that happened, Trillanes said he had received information that an influential personality in the province allegedly wants him liquidated.

While he did not give a

name, Trillanes said that person “is involved in mining, logging and politics.”

Trillanes said that some of his fellow environmentalists have already been killed, including tribal leader Datu Manuel “Kajugjug” Gardigo, a Manobo chieftain from Barangay Agsam in Lanuza town who was shot five times by still unidentified suspects last May. He said Gardigo was one of the leaders opposing illegal logging activities particularly in the concession of Surigao Development Corporation.

Another environmental activist, Dr. Isidro Olan, was ambushed in Carmen, Surigao del Sur last October but he survived the slay try. He was wounded by a bullet on the right shoulder.

Olan is the founder and executive director of the Lovers of Nature Foundation based in his hometown. He is an active member of the SAC in the Vicariate of CarCanMadCarLanPar. Trillanes said the attacks against environmentalists will not deter his campaign against mining and illegal logging activities in the area.

On Monday, the PMPI said it will file a comprehensive report on the harassments being suffered by Trillanes at the Commission on Human Rights (CHR).

“We believe that the motive behind the harassment on Chito Trillanes has something to do with his advocacy against destructive mining. Its clandestine nature, the fact that the identities of the ones doing the surveillance are yet to be known, further bolster his claim that his life and person are in danger should the surveillance continue. This must be stopped,” Fr. Oliver Castor, PMPI project officer said in the statement.

Castor said that the Mindanao office of the human rights

group Task Force Detainees of the Philippines assisted them in finalizing the fact sheet for the case.

He also said that they will submit to the CHR a video of Trillanes explaining his experiences.

“Because of these threats, Trillanes is moving from one safe house to another although he continues to be active in the sidelines for the environmental campaigns of the SAC. No person, especially someone who dedicated his time to the defense of our natural resources, deserves this situation. We fervently hope that the CHR will act swiftly on this case, “ Castor appealed. Puerto Princesa residents urged to plant 80-T trees in forest feast PUERTO PRINCESA CITY – Mayor Lucilo Bayron of this “city in the forest” is personally inviting residents to actively join again this year’s holding of the mass planting program Pista Y Ang Kagueban (Feast of the Forest) on July 27 in Barangay Irawan.

Though it suffered a delay in preparations, Bayron said the Pista is ready to troop to the mountains of Sitio Impapay, Barangay Irawan on the said date for the mass planting of some 80,000 assorted saplings of fast growing trees.

“Once again, we are in-

viting residents of this city, as well as the friends of the forests from other places, to join us on the last Saturday of the month in the Pista Y Ang Kagueban. We know people are looking forward to this, and next year, we will do this again in June. The delay was just temporary,” Bayron said.

At Sitio Impapay, the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) prepared 8.6 hectares of land for the mass tree planting, which is expected to be joined by around 20,000 residents of Puerto Princesa.

Finally, number four: Show your love to your wife or husband intimately and passionately.

When your marriage has the first three ingredients, then physical closeness is exciting and special for both partners.

General public is more corrupt

WHEN we think of corruption in general, we think only of the government workers who ask for bribe money before they perform their job.

We never thought of the general public who voluntarily, habitually and irresponsibly give out money when asking for some jobs or favor in a government office. Many taxpayers think giving bribe money is normal and part of any business transaction. I even think corruption begins from the public who offer cash to public employees until it becomes a seemingly normal procedure and there they go on. It takes two to tango.

This scheme of giving cash to government workers must be stopped. The public should know that they can get the services from the government offices for free. That they should not practice the art of giving slide money to

The public, the media, the religious groups and others should participate in this campaign and I think we can eventually dismantle the evils of corruptions in our society.

To stop completely this ugly habit of our people, I think everyone should campaign against it and be ready to testify against people who give and accept bribe money. This way we

can stop forever this illegal practice of bribery. It is a matter of injecting to the minds of the public about the illegality of bribery. We should enforce election laws to the full extent. We have to see people going to jail for violating important rules.

We have a lot of good laws but are ignored or simply not enforced. And because of this failure, people do not believe in our laws anymore.

We have to change this impression of the taxpayers or the general public.

Seventeen senators voted for him to become the new Senate President, while six voted for Enrile on July 22, 2013, as the 16th Congress opened.

After his election, Drilon took his oath as the undisputed leader of the upper chamber of Congress, with a solemn, if impossible, promise: for the Senate under his

And what is glaringly clear is that, most of those who are in the Senate today have been there for as long as we can remember, and yet, the laws they have passed have not really pushed the Filipino poor to a better life.

Maybe, what Drilon and his followers can concretely do is to renounce, give up, and waive, their P200 million pork barrel allocations every year which will amount to P4.8 billion annually, and ask that the

amount be instead channeled to providing business opportunities for the farmers, the fisherfolk, the white-collared employees, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and even the jobless and the out of school children.

If our senators do that, then, they can be viewed as real partners of President Aquino in his quest to eradicate poverty and desperation among our people. Anyway, we already have examples of senators who have not been receiving their pork barrel allocations, but who continue winning in elections anyway. Now, more than ever, our senators must walk their talk, as it were, in addressing the needs of our people.

Dr. Vivian Tuazon my professor in School Leadership at Capitol University Graduate School allows us to make a reflection on different leadership style. This activity inspires me a lot on how Transformational leadership plays its role in this modern world.

The main objective of watching the video clip is to find out how Transformational Leadership plays its role by showing the style both traditional, transactional and consultative Leadership . The Traditional Leadership focuses on autocratic way in handling the situation. On the scene Teacher has no right to react and suggest of the things that needs to be developed for the improvement of the school system. The principal or administrator is very particular in details and seldom stimulate the improvement. There is lack of openness to the subordinates and it is called as transactional leadership.

The consultative leadership focuses on asking the cause and effect upon implementing the rules or a policy in a very particular situation. It requires the charisma, inspirational appeal and intellectual stimulation. The Administrator knows when to unwind the feelings of his or her subordinates. A leader is open for change and suggestions which focuses on the learner’s progress. It is very concerned of his staff and willing to help the teachers to develop at its best. Established a good rapport to his staff and always encourage his staff to work with him and deals every situation in a democratic way.

Nowadays I can observe that both of the leadership style mentioned is quiet observable in Educational system. There are Administrator who are open in acquiring new style in handling there teacher. But most of

the time it requires on how techniques very effective in a certain situation because being flexible is really a requirement of being responsible administrator. It is hard to compare a kind of leader, a leader between traditional and a consultative style of leadership. The difference of these styles will always require a very reflective way of thinking that would somehow answer the doubts of what among the style is very effective. Effective in a way on how it is being applied of every problem encountered. Sensitive on the feeling of the subordinates will result to a harmonious relationship.

It will give a good impression that being a leader should be humble in a way that you are not just leading but you are inspiring and touching the life of every individual within the educational system. Inspiring people is one of the missions of an educator like us because we are dealing learners. In that way we are leader of our own, directing of the things what is required and what should be.

Lastly, let us put in our mind that the success of the educational system will always depend on how the leader led to success. In such a way we find how to give more importance the center of educational process which is the learner. How we plan programs that is suited to their interest considering that in dealing it we consider the strength and weaknesses that is always the target. There is always a collaborative effort between the administrator and the teachers’, leader by example and leader by doing.

Let us be transformed leaders for a better Philippines and successful learners someday of a visionary educator.

“The problem with toxic chemicals lurking in children’s products such as toys, school supplies, jewelries and accessories has gone unabated to the detriment of Filipino kids who are easy prey for some callous manufacturers,” Lucero said.

“Lawmakers of the 16th Congress have the opportu-

nity to correct this chemical injustice against defenseless children by enacting a robust law that will eliminate toxic substances in products marketed to children,” she added.

For the past two years, the group gathered solid evidence illustrating the widespread trade of unlabeled and unregistered toys loaded with excessive levels of toxic metals such as antimony, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead and mercury.

A total of 313 of the 518 toy products tested by the EcoWaste Coalition had one or more toxic metals above levels of concern in 2012.

by Celieto B. Magsayo “We are embarking on the most comprehensive basic education reform initiative ever done in the country since the establishment of the public education system more than a century ago.”

These words from education secretary Bro. Armin A. Luistro are loud enough to echo in the recesses of the minds of the stakeholders of the Department of Education. In their shoulders lie the gigantic task of carrying out the policies set forth in line with the government’s thrust to enhance the quality of education in our country, a fundamental requisite in its quest for national growth and development.

Along this line, it is note worthy to mention the so called “teacher-factor”. As front liners, teachers are unarguably the number one element to be considered for a successful implementation

of the K to 12 curriculum.

Teachers are now being immersed in an avalanche of inservice trainings to gain sufficient knowledge and skills to be up for the great task. In addition, the roles and responsibilities of the staff and personnel, in the school system, cannot be undermined.

As prime movers, school heads and instructional supervisors and the teachers as well, should be equipped with adequate knowledge and mastery of the contents of the curriculum, to be attuned with the thrust and goals of the institution.

Another factor to be considered is the availability of resource materials and facilities. There is a compelling need on the part of the government to supply schools with adequate resource materials. Foremost, the hiring of new teachers, (which the institution

Assessment as a factor, influences the curriculum implementation tremendously. Teachers should be exposed and get oriented with the new assessment and rating of learning outcomes. As a prelude, in-service trainings conducted to teachers, incorporated the vital topics on assessment. There is a pressing need to orient teachers with the new method of assessment; e.g. performance-based assessment using rubrics, which advent, has set aside the traditional methods of numerical ratings and paper and pencil test.

Secretary Luistro has this to say,

“The challenges are great and the task is daunting, but I am confident that through all of you, the brave and selfless men and women who have taken up the noble vocation of teaching, there is nothing we cannot accomplish together.”

The yoke is heavy and difficult to carry given its enormous weight, yet as front liners, we have to keep our courage alive and must exercise tireless persistence in order to realize our institution’s lofty aspirations.

With the signing of RA No. 10533 last May 15, 2013, known as Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013, the ball is already on the roll and it is up for us concerned, to either become part of its driving force or its restraining force. The choice is ours to make.

Organized by the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP), the Energy Efficiency Forum aims to be an annual event to convene key decision makers and business leaders from the energy, commercial and industrial sectors; enlist top management commitment to implement energy efficiency programs at the enterprise level; build strategic alliances among business, government, international donor organizations, environmental organizations and other public interest groups in the Philippines; and set a common climate action agenda in reducing carbon footprint through energy efficiency.

Mary is the most blessed of all women Fresh Gospel of the day: Matthew 12:46-50-While he yet talked to the people, behold, [his] mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him.

Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee. But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?

And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

In our gospel, we can find out that Jesus recognize his mother as the most privilege of all mothers with the reason of constant listening to his teachings. In this truth, we can conclude that “Mary is the most blessed of all women” here on earth as what St. Gabriel told her in the declaration of her motherhood to the son of God. In Luke 1:28-And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, [thou that art] highly favoured, the Lord [is] with thee: blessed [art] thou among women.

This is also attested by St. Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist.

In Luke 1:42-And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed [art] thou among women, and blessed [is] the fruit of thy womb.

What made Mary sacred and blessed? The answer is because she heard the words of God through her son Jesus Christ from childhood until his death on the cross.
