Scientists discover first earth ‘cousin’

Astronomers using the Kepler Space Telescope have discovered the first planet that is about the same size of Earth and orbits a star within the “habitable” zone, NASA announced Thursday.

The new discovered planet, Kepler-186f, “can be thought of as an Earthcousin rather than an Earthtwin,” it has many properties that resemble Earth, according to Thomas Barclay, research scientist at the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Moffett Field.

“The discovery of Kepler-186f is a significant step toward finding worlds like our planet Earth,” said Paul Hertz, director of NASA’s Astrophysics Division.

Kepler-186f resides in the Kepler-186 system, about 500 light years from Earth in the constellation Cygnus. The system is also home to four companion See discover, page 11

Dozens of Iligan officials face charges with Ombud

CAGAYAN de Oro City--Iligan City Vice Mayor Ruderic C. Marzo and a number of city councilors and city hall officers and employees were slapped with criminal and administrative complaints before the Office of the Ombudsman in Davao City last April 14 by a group of Iligan residents.

The complaints were filed in connection with the alleged disbursements of the city council totaling P59,251,996.47 for “payment of wages to casual laborers, administrative aides, administrative assistants, administrative officers, and special operations officers.

The disbursements were said to be “wages paid to casual employees and laborers” for a “legislative enhancement project.”

According to the complainants, “thousands of casual employees and laborers” were hired by the city

council for a “ghost project.”

Named respondents in the complaint for alleged “violation of section 3(e) of R.A. No. 3019 (the antigraft and corrupt practices act); articles 217 and 171, 220, 226 and 177 of Revised Penal Code; R.A. No.10 (An act penalizing usurpation of public authority); section 3(e) and (f ) of R.A. 6013” are the vice mayor, Sangguniang Panlungsod members Providencio A. Abragan Jr., Ariel P. Anghay, Michelle C. Sweet-Booc, Alfredo R. Busico, Simplicio N. Larrazabal III, Bayani C. Areola,

Also named respondents in the same complaint are former vice mayor Henry C. Dy, former SP members Moises Dalisay Jr., Chonilo O. Ruiz, and Jose Zalsos; former city auditor Gulam Suco; and Riza Jane P. Magaro.

The other respondents are assistant city secretary Elizabeth B. Maglinte, city department heads Reymundo E. Clavano, Fernando P. Ongpoy, Marina P. Jumalon,

and Louela S. Maybituin; local operations officer Rudolfo M. Nadayag; local treasury operations officer Virginia R. Mirasol; cashiers Agnes O. Pancito and Tessie Q. Generalao; and Samuel Huertas and Norma Galorio.

The complainants also filed a complaint of alleged “grave misconduct, dishonesty, and grave abuse of authority, and section 4, A(a) and (c) of R.A. No. 6713” against Marzo, Abragan, Anghay, Sweet-Booc, Busico, Areola, Openiano, Obial, Siao, Salibay, Young, Larrazabal, Huertas, Maglinte,

Galorio, Clavano, Ongpoy, Jumalon, Maybituin, Nadayag, Mirasol, Pancito, and Generalao.

In the joint-affidavit complaint received by Ombudsman Mindanao administrative officer Teofilo Q. Macatiog and spokesperson lawyer Aileen Lizada, the complainants identified themselves as Jose C. Pantoja, a KBP member media/ radio commentator in Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro City and the president of Bantay Hustisya – Iligan City, a resident of Zone 10, barangay Bagong Silang, Iligan City; Jacob F. Dasmarinas, a member of City of Waterfalls-Iligan City (COW, a cause-oriented website for good governance and transparency), a resident of Obach Subdivision, Camague, barangay Tomas Cabali, Iligan City; Marissa D. Lagbas, an administrator of COW-Iligan City; Norberto Altres Jr., a KBP member, media/radio commentator in Iligan City, a resident of Suarez, Iligan City; and Cipriano S. Oponda, member representative of Center for Alternative Legal Forum and Justice, Iligan City, a resident of Zone 6, barangay Bagong Silang, Iligan City.

The complainants said the basis of their complaint is the alleged “misappro-

priation of the public funds thru a non-existing project of the Sangguniang Panlungsod coming from the General Fund - Committee Services, and Salaries and Wages—Casuals.”

They cited that on January 15, 2014, Mayor Celso G. Regencia issued a memorandum “that all job orders and deployments should be approved by the office of the Chief Executive regardless of their charges. Hence, job orders and deployments not approved by the undersigned should not be processed for payment.”

They alleged that this memorandum was issued after the mayor, “in one of the flag ceremonies, showed documents of unusual number of casual employees, about 3,371, under the Vice-Mayor and the Office of the Sangguniang Panlungsod.”

They added that these “questionable casual employees and laborers were hired in different duration of days and/or months from January to December 2013, and which deployment caused controversies.”

The complainants further said that the “list of ghost casual employees and laborers triggered a public outcry and disturbance to the point of abhorrence and detestation.”

School principal as instructional leader and manager: Factors in improving the quality of education

VILLALOBOS, P – I Man-ai Elementary School Southwest II District Division of Cagayan De Oro City It is hard to determine a principal’s success in his roles as instructional leader and manager unless a principal has a clear vision and mission of his job -- one that is focused on instructional leadership. Success cannot be determined unless one has a target or standard to judge his performance. The leadership vision needs to be about helping pupils succeed

academically and as citizens, and helping faculty and staff develop as professionals with a common vision and mission about school and pupil success.

Based on the vision and mission the leader needs to set goals, and assess whether the goals have been addressed during the year.

While managers are concerned with generating and collecting data sources, leaders go beyond merely connecting and scrutinizing the most valuable data sources given contextual realities and perceptions. Leaders then make decisions and act

in the best interests of pupils, faculty, and the school.

Thus, the Principal as an instructional leader and manager provides opportunities to build trust, collaboration, and individual and organizational capacity, as well as employs celebrations to call attention to treasured school values. He is responsible for establishing a school wide vision of commitment to high standards and the success of all pupils. Having high expectations for all, including clear and public standards, is one key to closing the achievement

gap between advantaged and less advantaged pupils and for raising the overall achievement of all pupils.

The Principal also plays a major role in developing a “professional community” of teachers who guide one another in improving instruction. He works relentlessly to improve achievement by focusing on the quality of instruction. He helps define and promote high expectations; he attacks teacher isolation and fragmented effort; and he connects directly with teachers and the classroom. He

also encourages continual professional learning and emphasizes research-based strategies to improve teaching and learning and initiates discussions about instructional approaches, both in teams and with individual teachers for a central part of being a great leader is cultivating leadership in others.

In practice, all of these mean that a School Principal as an instructional leader and manager must be intimately familiar with the “core” of schooling – the quality of education.

Speaking in Filipino: Not a sign of weakness

In fact Filipino language should be used in education and government because it will help the country progress. Even now that the Linggo ng Wika has been made into Buwan ng Wika to provide more time to recognize, appreciate, and celebrate the Filipino language and culture but still many academicians and linguist are not pleased with it.

It is known to us that since the start our ancestors really fought hard to gain independence and have our own identity.

As an educator, the celebration of Buwan ng Wika is very important to the pupils and students to be aware

how important our National language and for them to appreciate it. The K to 12 Curriculum merely affects it due to MTB-MLE but it is the sole responsibilities of the teacher to teach his/her children to speak the national language.

It is not true that as we continued to celebrate Buwan ng Wika it seems that we do not have our own national language. We must continue to let our pupils know how important our language and culture. They must learn it heartily because how can they teach their children in the next generation if they forget our own language and culture. As Filipinos we must be proud to be one and be unique.

So, we must continue to educate our children to be nationalistic and to loveour own language and culture. Of course we should be globally competitive but we must patronize our own first.

PH’s 2 pressing mosquito-borne health concerns: malaria, dengue

BUTUAN City––In the Philippines, two of the most pressing vector-borne health concerns are dengue and malaria.

Dengue, caused by a bite of a virus-carrying mosquito, has infected 822 people and has claimed six lives in Caraga from January 1 to April 5, 2014.

In 2013 alone, it has caused 3,333 cases with 28 deaths as reported by different health units in the region.

The Depar tment of Health in Caraga said that another vector-borne disease that is caused by mosquitoes is Filariasis.

While its effects are not immediate as dengue and malaria, Filariasis’ longterm debilitating effects to an individual should be taken seriously.

Surigao del Norte and the

province of Dinagat Islands were declared Filariasis-free in 2010. Surigao del Sur joined them in 2013.

In commemoration of the 78th founding anniversary of the World Health Organization, this year’s World Health Day celebration highlights vector-borne diseases with the theme: “One Small Bite, Big Threat.”

The health sector calls for better awareness and stronger community action towards the control and eradication of disease vectors in the community.

In the campaign against one of the most prevalent vector-borne diseases, dengue, the DOH has moved for the revitalization of the 4’Oclock Habit.

It aims to control and eliminate the breeding grounds of mosquitoes by encouraging communities to STOP all activities at 4 o’clock and DESTROY mosquito-breeding places

and to LISTEN to barangay officials for appropriate instruction and health education.

This highlights the role of barangay officials to take the lead in the campaign.

“Proper environmental sanitation and the eradication of mosquito breeding places in the surroundings are the keys to better vector control,” said DOH-Caraga Regional Director Minerva Molon in a press statement, a copy of which was obtained

Molon added: “Though these insects have been part of our ecosystem since time immemorial, all we need is to control them and prevent the transmission of vector-borne infections to humans.”

“We call everyone to actively participate in our fight against one of the most common vectors, mosquitoes,” said the health official.

NorMin LGUs completed projects under salintubig CAGAYAN de Oro City Three (3) water projects from the municipalities of Lanao del Norte and Bukidnon, under the CY 2013 Sagana at Ligtas na Tubig sa Lahat (SALINTUBIG) program of Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), were completed in the first quarter of this year.

The municipalities of Baroy and Tubod both from L anao del Norte province, have completed their water projects in the amount of P500,000.00 and P120,000.00 respectively.

Around 103 households with an actual population of 462 from Barangay Libertad of Baroy will have access to potable water through the Libertad Potable Water Supply Development Project.

Barangay Palao of Tubod, on the other hand, has completed construction of the Intake Box which will benefit 60 households of the entire barangay.

by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004. By 2006, anybody who was over 13 years of age and who had an email address could join Facebook. Today, it is the world’s largest social networking website.

Facebook has helped a lot in creating a personal brand for many individuals and for many businesses. Moreover, it’s a major source of entertainment for people around the globe since Facebook is a global social networking site available in various languages and countries where language is not a barrier for translation features are available.

Facebook is a “one-stop shop” for entertainment, communication, and sharing of information with others. It’s a place where you chat with others, share your ideas, ask questions, comment on people’s status, add your status, make friends, market your business, advertise and much more.

Among the avid users of Facebook are

students and teachers. Utilizing Facebook effectively in education courses will provide future teachers with perspective for their own future classrooms (Cruz) while students can benefit much if they will use this site to their educational advantage and not on other purposes.

Aside from that, Facebook enables users to be updated with the activities of their favorite celebrities. Moreover, students can use Facebook for group study – creating a group for study purposes only where they can share information about their projects, homework, assignments, exams, due dates and many others.

Facebook has also thousands of application, games and quizzes where students can sharpen their minds. For those who are into journalism, they can write/share their articles, blogs, and photos.

In short, Facebook is a full package of education, communication and entertainment.

Using Facebook as a tool in education is a very gigantic move. But, certain things like “internet addiction” must be given due consideration so as to fully get the target of the usage of this site in education.

As a head of a school, one has many things to encounter, decisions to make and options to consider. Sometimes, things seem to go out of hand and one might just want to crawl on the bed and cover his head. But, reality has it that in everything there is a reason. And for every endeavor, success is always sweeter.

Education provides us with the necessary skills, knowledge and even values

which we carry with us wherever we go.

But, having a positive outlook is innate in one’s being. It spells the difference. We have different ways of approaching things. It is on how we face each challenge that makes us who we are. We can be bombarded with numerous trials and difficulties, yet, we can find ways and means to counter them.

In school, a school head that looks at things positively influences his teachers in a positive way also. If he wants to get things done, then he serves as a role model and a good example to his subordinates.

ILIGAN City - Responding to the need to improve the health of inmates at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) – Iligan City Jail, through the efforts of Ms. Zonia Erasquin, Jail Matters of the City Mayors Office, the City Health Office (CHO) conducted a medical mission on April 15, 2014 at the Iligan City Jail.

Dr. Josephine T. Dumaguing, Medical Officer IV, City Health Officer led the medical mission in giving free consultation and medicine to inmates.

Barangay Tipanoy Health Workers assisted Dr. Dumaguing.

In an exclusive interview with Ms. Erasquin, she reported while she was monitoring conditions in the jail and the detention center she found out that there was a need to address the poor health condition of the inmates in which most of them suffered from skin disorder due to sanitation especially on toilet facilities/ water supply and congestion of prison cell.

About 50 inmates benefited the free consulta-

tion and free medicines by the City Health Office.

Roughly 80% were diagnosed for skin disorder and 20% were diagnosed for hypertension/high blood pressure, cough and colds and anaemia.

Ms. Zonia also revealed plans in conducting a seminar on sanitary education and awareness for inmates to reduce contagious skin disorder inside the cell. Furthermore she has extended her gratitude to the City Health Office who responded to her request at a short notice.

Safety of NGCP transmission lines Planting of trees under transmission lines, towers and right-of-way (ROW) clearances is prohibited according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

Cynthia Albanza, said it is one the causes of frequent power tripping or brownouts. Several cases of these have been reported in some areas of Lanao del Norte and Western Mindanao.

Alabanza said NGCP lines carry very high voltage power. Thus, violations of their safety regulations affects their operations.

The public must be aware that observance of NGCP’s safety regulations would prevent cases of electrocution, accidents, and power trippings.

Residents along living near or along NGCP transmission lines have to cooperate by not planting trees near towers and

electricity posts to lessen and eliminate, transmission line-related accidents.

Along this line, it would also be expedient for local government units to enact appropriate ordinances to prohibit planting of trees under and along transmission towers.

NGCP concern in solving safety issues is very laudable. It is imperative for all stakeholders to work together in ensuring the safety of the public and the NGCP transmission lines so that lives will not be put at risk.

We salute NGCP for coordinating with LGUs, for conducting information drives on transmission line safety and educating the folks living near these facilities and structures.

NGCP’s safety campaign is coupled with distribution of safety information materials to local governments.

The NGCP danger signs posted along transmission towers are good visual warnings too.

Advising the public to refrain from any activity that may cause damage to transmission lines is in order. Any kind of structures, TV and radio antenna, kite-flying games , grass fires, along and under its transmission lines, towers, and substations, should never be allowed.

Let us help NGCP for the lives we may save would be our own.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) conducts regularly an information drive on transmission line safety regulations to avoid accidents and electrocution and other untoward incidents.

We must also thank the NGCP that only a few incidents of electrocution and accidents happened within

their transmission structures all over the country. . Their constant advocacy on safety has made the public aware of the safety tips.

Parents must be reminded to strictly not allow children to fly kites near transmission lines or to climb any transmission structures to prevent accidents and electrocution.

The NGCP has advised the public to be cautious whenever passing through the structures while carrying long stick logs that may contact with the power lines.

Users and consumers must report any incident of leaning and damaged poles of towers and sagging power lines and identify poles or tower number for NGCP’s immediate action.

It is good that NGCP has also encouraged every concerned citizens to help secure the transmission lines to avoid severe damages that may result into power interruptions.

WASHINGTON––There’s a saying that a picture is worth a thousand words.

That may be especially true these days with the huge amount of what are called “selfies” on the Internet.

This popular trend of taking a picture of yourself has become pervasive.

The pope’s doing it, President Barack Obama’s doing it, and celebrities like singer Justin Bieber are doing it ALL the time. Selfies.

“I think a lot of people link it to their identity that a selfie is capturing something that they can show to the world that represents themselves,” said Nathaniel Herr, a psychology professor at American University in Washington. He explained why the younger generation, in particular, is taking and posting selfies.

“They’re more comfortable with seeing themselves and thinking about themselves than previous generations were,” he said.

College student Kaitlin Lehmann said they’re just another way her generation communicates. “Like today, I was pissed [angry] about being here at school because it’s Monday, so I sent a snapshot to my friend, and he responded with a similar face that he also did not like Mondays.”

Another student, Alyssa Jones, compares them to a conversation that has stopped in time. “Well, there’s the ‘it’s been a really long day’ so you do like the stare, and then there’s the excited like [shows excited face].”

Lehman said it’s important to her that she can control the images and decide when and where to post them.

“Like this past weekend, I just got this nose ring, and so I was really excited about it, so I sent everyone a picture of me and my new nose ring,” she said.

Some people think selfies are simply narcissistic.

A YouTube video by the Chainsmokers makes fun of them.

Lehman, however, looks at the selfie another way.

“It could be a form of art.

Van Gogh painted pictures of himself and so did Rembrandt,” she said.

A recent study on selfies shows that young people worldwide express themselves differently. Research at the City University of New York compared selfies in five cities -- Moscow, Berlin, New York, Tokyo and Sao Paulo. Lev Manovich, who headed the project, said the average person is about 24 years old.

“The strongest difference that we found was in the head turn, so is the head straight or diagonal?

Look at the photos from Moscow, the way girls pose is very much like a fashion magazine. They look like models. In Brazil, they’re playing with the camera.

It’s much more informal,” said Manovich.

But there’s also a downside to selfies, according to both Jones and Herr.

“I would not post anything that I wouldn’t want a potential employer to see,” said Jones.

“When young people see celebrities posting pictures that emphasize their attractiveness, they may get the message that’s what they should be doing, that they should be emphasizing their own physical qualities over and above all these other qualities they may have, and that can really affect their self-esteem,” said Herr.

Herr doesn’t see selfies as a trend that will go away, even as the 20-somethings get older.

“I think as they get old-

er you’re going to see less selfies among that specific generation, but right behind them there’s a younger group of kids waiting to come into that same phase,” he said.

Word of the year “Selfie” is the Oxford Dictionaries’ word of the year after beating back competition from words like “twerk,” according to a release by the company.

Selfie, which was the unanimous winner, is basically synonymous with selfportrait, but with a tech edge because of its widespread use in social media and on photosharing sites.

The official definition of selfie is “a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website,” according to Oxford Dictionaries, which added the work to its online dictionary in August.

According to the company, the word selfie dates as far back as 2002, when an Australian posted a photo of himself in an Internet forum. That the word is spelled with an -ie rather than a -y also gives credence to the Australian origin as Australians are fond of words ending in -ie, the company said.

By 2012, selfie was commonly being used in mainstream media sources and this has been rising ever since.

Even First Lady Michelle Obama and the Pope have taken selfies.

Oxford Dictionaries said there are already numerous

variations of the word, including “helfie” (a picture of one’s hair) and “belfie” (a picture of one’s posterior).

There is also versions of particular activities: “welfie” (workout selfie) and “drelfie” (drunken selfie).

Twerk, Selfie added to Oxford Dictionaries online The Internet continues to have a major impact on the English language.

In its quarterly update, the Oxford Dictionaries Online has added many words from Internet culture.

Here’s a partial list, but the full list can be seen here.

• derp, exclam. n. (informal): (used as a substitute for) speech regarded as meaningless or stupid, or to comment on a foolish or stupid action.

• digital detox, n.: a period of time during which a person refrains from using electronic devices such as smartphones or computers, regarded as an opportunity to reduce stress or focus on social interaction in the physical world.

• bitcoin, n.: a digital currency in which transactions can be performed without the need for a central bank.

• emoji, n: a small digital image or icon used to express an idea or emotion in electronic communication.\ • selfie, n. (informal): a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.

Another addition is the verb “twerk,” which was made infamous during Monday’s MTV Video Music Awards when pop star Miley Cyrus made the suggestive moves during her performance.

The entire definition of twerk is to “dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance.’’

In 2012, the dictionary added lolz, photobomb and tweeps to the lexicon.

Oxford Dictionaries Online focuses on modern usage, while the Oxford English Dictionary is more traditional and unlikely to include words like “twerk” in the near future.

Notorious kidnappers arrested in Zamboanga province

AMBOANGA SIBUGAY – Philippines authorities are holding three men implicated in the series of kidnappings in Western Mindanao region.

The trio Abral Abdusalam, Rating Hadjirul and Kismir Hadjurul were arrested by police and military units in a house in the

To address the problem in school on pupils who are slow to read, different school-based reading programs are designed to strengthen pupils’ reading and comprehension skills.

Among the different reading programs implemented in school that is in line with the Department of Education’s Every Child A Reader Program is the DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) which is done every after lunch time. This program encourages pupil to improve their reading skills since they are using short story books which are of interest to them.

There is also the three o’clock habit where children stop what they are doing every three o’clock and pick up a reading material and read for 15 minutes.

Peer tutoring is also encouraged so that the children will feel at ease having to read with a friend or a classmate. This is done after classes in the afternoon.

The aim of these programs is to develop in the school children the love for reading. When children love to read, their vocabulary will also be improved as well as their reading ability and comprehension.

Remedial reading is also conducted to those children who are slow to read. This is done after lunch or every after class in the afternoon.

Since making a child read is everybody’s concern, the school head also takes part by calling to the office those children who are slow to read and teach/let them read one by one.

To collaborate with the parents, reading materials such as pop sheets are given to the children for them to read at home where their parents and siblings can teach them.

Finally, to utilize the time and skills of those parents waiting for their children in school, we have the “kapwa ko, guro ko” which can not only develop or improve the reading ability of the pupils but as well as develop a closer relationship between elders and children.

With the above school-based reading programs, through the collaborative efforts of the school, parents and the community, reading ability and skills of the pupils will be improved and enhanced.

FAO: Philippines still world’s second largest banana exporter

AVAO CITY - The Philippines has won back its ranking as the second largest banana exporter in the world, according to the Banana Market Review and Statistics released by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

FAO data for 2011 indicate that exports from Asia showed a recovery following

from the Asian region surged 25.6 percent in 2011 and 27.1 percent in 2012, according to the report.

As a result, the export volume reached 2.82 million metric tons, well above the previous record of 2.4 million metric tons in 2006.

According to Dusunceli, this is equivalent to a whopping 93.9 percent of all banana exports coming from Asia alone.

Ecuador, still the world’s largest banana exporter, produced much lesser output as flooding from hurricanes damaged vast areas of all its banana plantations. Its shipments of bananas went down as much as 410,000 metric tons or about 5.6 percent of its 2011 exports, according

to the FAO report.

While banana exports from South America declined, Mexico and Central America boosted their combined export volumes by 22 percent with the neighboring Dominican Republic mostly leading the export shipments in the Carribean.

Banana export shipments from Africa on the other hand, which makes up only 3.9 percent of global banana shipments, grew surprisingly by 2.4 percent in 2012 from total exports hitting 649,000 metric tons. (PNA)

Ang Pasyon ni Hesukristo

THE month of April marks the celebration of Christ’s death and resurrection, what the spiritual call in the Philippines “Holy Week” or Semana Santa. In contrast to other Christian countries, Filipino Catholics give emphasis on the suffering of Christ, rather than on His resurrection, on the belief that salvation comes at the end.

During the holy week, many people are busy going to churches joining religious parades, sacrificing for their sins of watch “Passion of Jesus Christ.”

Speaking of passion plays, the Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan brings “Ang Pasyon ni Hesukristo”, April 16 and 17.

“Ang Pasyon ni Hesukristo” is a religious drama that tells the suffering of Jesus at the Crucifixion and also serves as a reflection for all Kagay-anons to repent for their sins and attain salvation.

This passion play was produced by The Xavier Stage, XU’s resident theater company, because it’s their dream to stage the “Ang Pasyon ni Hesukristo”.

The Xavier Stage labored so hard for this production.

Most of the cast of the play is new but very dedicated to share their best and inspiring passion of Christ.

“Ang Pasyon ni Hesukristo” highlights the Jewish high priests and elders of the Sanhedrin accused Jesus of blasphemy, arriving at the decision to put him to death.

But first they needed Rome to approve of their death sentence, so Jesus was taken to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor in Judea.

Although Pilate found him innocent, unable to find or even contrive a reason to condemn Jesus, he feared the crowds and let them decide Jesus’ fate. Stirred by the Jewish chief priests, the crowds declared, “Crucify him!”

As was common, Jesus was publicly scourged or beaten with a leatherthonged whip before his crucifixion. Tiny pieces of iron and bone chips were tied to the ends of each leather thong, causing deep cuts and painful bruising.

He was mocked, struck in the head with a staff and spat on. A crown of thorns was placed on his head and he was stripped naked. Too weak to carry his cross, Simon of Cyrene was forced to carry it for him.

Stake-like nails were driven through his wrists and ankles, fastening him to the cross where he was crucified between two convicted criminals.

The point of the play teaches that the death of Jesus Christ provided the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all mankind, thus making the crucifix, or cross, one of the most defining symbols of Christianity.

During the play, the audience was amazed not only because of the colorful light effects, the transitions, and the set-up, but also it’s because of the artistic and outstanding artists who portrayed different emotions and characters of the play.

The role of HESUKRISTO or JESUS CHRIST was played by Carl Manere, a fresh graduate with the degree in Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science in

He is also the company’s treasurer and a resident artist. He has been with The Xavier Stage for three consecutive years and has been active ever since. Manere look like the real Jesus Christ on the play and he also captivated the audience with his very good acting skills. He is very charismatic during the play.

According to Manere this was his first time to portray a major role, which is the role of Jesus Christ.

“Actually, I’m really nervous, and proud at the same time, because not everyone will be afforded an opportunity to portray a major character… everybody is aware of Jesus Christ’s story. Even though it’s my first time I hope that I portrayed it well”.

Manere also added, “During the play, I really feel the pain of Jesus Christ sufferings. Despite the pain that I felt, I still prayed to God that I can portray his role properly. I will dedicate this pain to him. And we should also honor him because he sacrificed his life to save all the mankind.

Jesus Christ loves us so much.” Manere said during the interview.

We have also HUDAS played by Rosell Velez, a BS Psychology Student of

Xavier University. HUDAS is one of the twelve original apostles of Jesus Christ, and the son of Simon Iscariot.

He is infamously known for his kiss and betrayal of Jesus to the hands of the chief Sanhedrin priests in exchange for a payment of thirty silver coins. Rosell Velez appears very emotional and strong which give life to his role as HUDAS. HESUKRISTO and HUDAS are the two characters that catch the attention of the audience but in general, all the artists who represent different characters did a very good job on “Ang Pasyon ni Hesukristo”.

T h e “Pa s y o n” p l ay wouldn’t be possible and successful without the Director and the Playwright.

Hobart Savior serves as Director of Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts (XCCA) and the Executive Artistic Director of The Xavier Stage (TXS).

During the interview, Mr. Hobart shared their preparations for the successful play of “Ang Pasyon ni Hesukristo”.

Savior said “Our first preparation is that how we are able to organize all the scenes, what we call as “dramaturgy”, so we really made sure that we have the nice dramaturgy for our interpretation of the Pas-

sion of the Christ because there are many versions.

The important thing is I have the humility to actually prepare for it as a director with my Semiological Dramaturgy, so I prepared for the drama aspect, scenes and elements of the show.

Next is we prepared for the casting, we auditioned and we wanted to finalize all the cast as soon as possible and of course we did some orientations, readings and we rehearsed”.

In addition, Hobart Savior is not only the play director, he also portrayed the role of Joseph Caiaphas, known simply as Caiaphas in the New Testament, was the Jewish high priest who is said to have organized the plot to kill Jesus. Caiaphas is also said to have been involved in the Sanhedrin trial of Jesus.

On the other hand, the playwright of “Ang Pasyon ni Hesukristo” is Dr. Linda O. Manalo. She graduated Bachelor of Arts, Major in English in 1970, graduated her Master of Art in English degree in 1984 and finished her Doctor of Philosophy in Education in 2001 at Xavier University.

Dr. Manalo shared her views about the successful play, according to her, “I am very happy that the show was very successful. In my

point of view, the portrayal was done excellently by each character. Very artistically represented, i can see the life, the trials and sufferings of Jesus. All the artists did a very good job”.

The Xavier Stage dedicates their success to Jesus Christ.

It is their way of giving back to Christ and glorify him. What is important here is that The Xavier Stage is able to refresh to the Filipino community the story of the “pasyon”.

It’s not so easy to tell the story but TXS believes that regardless of whatever preparations they have and expectations people have, the important is they made people live again the story of Christ to the best that they can through theater.

They want people to feel the story of Christ and let people know that Christ continually watches over us, providing our needs.

He protects and guides us, and answers our prayers.

Christ may not always work in the time frame we expect, but if we’re faithful to wait on Him, He will always come through for us according to His will. Christ loves us unconditionally and won’t ever leave or forsake us.

It is only then and only then that the believer is truly `born of God’, is born in, and starts to be guided by, the Spirit, making him one with Jesus---in body, blood and Spirit.

“It is then that he unites with Jesus, and becomes a new creation where the old self has gone and the new has come, becoming a part of His body, with His blood running through his veins (making him a `blood kin’ of Jesus), and becoming a part of His Spirit, which is in each and everyone who is transformed as a `child of God’. CDO joint team to begin inspections of businesses THE Joint Inspection Team (JIT) of the City Government of Cagayan de Oro will start monitoring compliance of business permits and licensing requirements on Tuesda, April 22, 2014.

The inspections will be conducted Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting with newly-registered businesses operating in the city’s urban barangays.

The JIT was created by virtue of Executive Order No. 20213, issued by City Mayor Oscar

Moreno, in compliance with Joint Memorandum Circular (JMC) No. 01, series of 2010, issued by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

“This is nothing new,” the Mayor said, adding that the said joint circular provides guidelines in the implementation of standards in processing business permits and licenses in all cities and municipalities, consistent

with Republic Act No. 9485 or the Anti-Red Tape Act (ARTA) of 2007.

The Joint Inspection Team or JIT is composed of the following, or their representatives, with Local Economic Development and Investment Promotions Officer (LEDIP) Eileen EscobarSan Juan, exercising oversight functions: The Business Permits and Licensing Officer (BPLO); The City Building Official; The City Health Officer; The City

Planning and Development Coordinator or designated Zoning Officer; The City-Local Environment and Natural Resources Officer; The City Treasurer; and The City Fire Marshal.

Mayor Moreno said the joint inspections constitute the next logical step in Cagayan de Oro’s now highly streamlined business permits and licensing system (BPLS) and his administration’s thrust of delivering the best service to the people.

Myanmar gets over USD 4B foreign investment in FY 2013-14 MYANMAR obtained USD 4.107 billion foreign investment in the fiscal year 2013-14 which ended in March, up from USD 1.4 billion in 2012-13, local media quoted the Directorate of Investment and Com-

panies Administration as reporting Friday.

Injected by 34 countries and regions, the foreign investment in 2013-14 covered manufacturing, energy, oil and gas, mining, hotels and tourism, real estate,

livestock, fishery and agriculture.

China stood as the largest investor, followed by Thailand and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

According to the report, the 71 foreign-in-

vested projects in 201314 up to December last year has created 50,751 jobs for local people.

Myanmar promulgated a new foreign investment law in November 2012 in a bid to attract foreign investment to the country in line with its reform strategy.

Meanwhile, the Asian Development Bank said recently that Myanmar's economic growth for 2013-14 is estimated at 7.5 percent and the growth is expected to pick up to an annual rate of 7.8 percent for each of the next two fiscal years.(PNA/ Xinhua)

Cebu land developer pours in P350M for ‘economic’ condo projects Homegrown real estate developer Landtraders World Properties Corp has poured in P350 million for two “economic” condominiums in this city.

Landtraders chief executive officer Michelle Yu said their first condominium project is the San Marino Residences in the North Reclamation Area here.

The two new projects are the Royal Garden Residences on F. Cabahug St. in Barangay Kasambagan and The Corinthian Residences on Andres Abellana St. in Barangay Guadalupe, all in this city.

Yu expressed confidence the demand for economic housing in urban areas is high given the increasing number of migrants coming from disaster-stricken areas especially in Cen-

tral and Eastern Visayas and conflict areas in Mindanao.

Landtraders has already introduced three economic condominium projects in Cebu City in just three years after it joined the real estate venture.

For its San Marino project, the developer has recorded 98 percent sales. It broke ground in 2012.

Yu attributed the fast sales take up of San Marino Residences to its partner realty firms, all of which are homegrown realtors.

San Marino Residences is a 21-storey condominium with 490 units.

The completion of the building and turnover of units are expected to be realized in the fourth quarter of this year. (PNA)

Foreign manufacturers keen on moving to PHL MORE foreign manufacturing companies operating in China and other ASEAN countries are seriously considering moving to Philippines due to its high-quality labor, the Foreign Buyers Association of the Philippines (Fobap) said.

Fobap president Robert Young said two French investors are coming to Manila end of the month, while a number of Canadian, Chinese and American companies will also be here mid-May to scout for investment opportunities.

Young said these are mid-sized manufacturers of garments, apparel, shoes, toys and housewares looking to invest around $500 million and employ 1,000 to 3,000 workers.

"These people are financially capable, they are ready, they mean business, they are serious...We are lucky if we get at least 10 initially from all parts of China and other ASEAN countries," he said.

Young said these companies are moving out of China amid the increasing labor unrest resulting in shrinking labor pool, higher capital costs and its currency issues.

"They went to other ASEAN countries but they do not like (there)...

They used to be buying from Manila. They know that Filipinos are really good in skill, quality control and workmanship. So this is actually our number one attraction," he pointed out.

Young stressed that the Philippines also can now be a cheaper source of goods, especially with the forthcoming European Union's preferential trade scheme called Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP).

"Philippine goods will be duty free entry to EU. Also, (with) the forthcoming incentivized/subsidized labor, this makes investments in the Philippines attractive," he said.

With these new investments, Young said that FOBAP members, which source products for foreign buyers, will have more factories and suppliers to choose from.

"Right now, we are running out of suppliers because in the past five years, they closed shops one by one. If they will come back, our own business will also flourish together with the Philippine economy," he added.
